Therefore, as early as you decide that you need to shed weight, the first thing that you must do is to decide on a way that you know will work greatly for you.<br /> <br /> Remember that skipping meals does more harm than good. Skippiong meals makes you hungrier and more vulnerable to poor food choices and over-eating. Although it seems that skipping meals would help you lose weight faster, it actually works against you and can sabotage your weight loss plan.<br /> <br /> If you are exercising to lose weight, focus on cardiovascular exercises to get the job done. These types of exercises raise your heart rate and cause your body to burn more fat than resistance exercise. All activities that elevate your heart rate count, so choose something you enjoy doing.<br /> <br /> Everyone loves french fries! Unfortunately, they cause problems for many people who are trying to lose weight. But if you want french fries that will help your scale go down instead of up, try baking them.<br /> <br /> Cut potatoes into 1/2" fries, toss in a large bowl with 1 tbsp. of oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper and a bit of rosemary if you like, and bake in a single layer at 400 degrees for 30 min. Loosen using a spatula and then bake for about 10 minutes longer. These delicious fries are lower in fat and calories and taste as good as deep fried potatoes. This great idea for "French Bakes" came from Laurel's Kitchen cookbook.<br /> <br /> Walking can be a great way to lose a few pounds. Walking benefits you by burning calories and by satiating your appetite since your blood is busy creating energy for your body. You can typically burn 500 calories for each hour of walking, which is a great and easy way to burn off your dinner.<br /> <br /> If you like chips and want to continue eating them throughout your diet, consider the baked chips. The baked versions have a lot less fat with about the same taste.<br /> <br /> As you have seen, the market has many different treatments available for men and women experiencing hair loss. He speaks of the power of nostalgia and describes the device as a time machine with the ability to take people to that place everyone most longs to go, “back home again.” As he delivers his presentation in a darkened conference room, images of Draper’s own young wife and children flash onto a screen one by one, and the carousel works its magic on on those who watch.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">MeTV is another sort of time machine. Its viewers are regularly transported to an earlier, some say more golden, age of television – the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, those decades when the network’s target audience, baby boomers like me, was very young. Tripping into the past by way of MeTV is a purely cheerful experience, nothing at all like the harrowing journey of Martin Sloan (Gig Young) whose “Walking Distance” detour into his past took him through the looking glass of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Twilight Zone</i>.</span><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Thanks to MeTV I’ve once again been able to travel <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Streets of San Francisco</i> and revisit <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Rockford Files</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Dick Van Dyke Show</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Mary Tyler Moore </i>and, most recently, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Rhoda</i>– all great and legendary series. But the show I can never resist, no matter how many times I’ve seen it, is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners</i>, the classic 39 episodes that aired on CBS from 1955 – 56. We got a kick out of Ed Norton, the quirky sewer worker who was Ralph’s neighbor and best friend, and adored long-suffering Alice Kramden, purveyor of sparingly dispensed but devastating wisecracks, who knew well that beneath Ralph’s bluff and bluster he was a big-hearted softy. <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners </i>ran on television in one form or another from the early ‘50s into the late ‘70s, so it’s fair to say that it was always in the background of our lives as my brother and I grew up.<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> </i></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners </i>made its first TV appearance as a comedy sketch on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Cavalcade of Stars</i>, a variety show Jackie Gleason hosted on the now-dufunct DuMont Network from 1950 – 1952. When he was hired away by CBS in 1952 and began the enormously successful <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Jackie Gleason Show</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners </i>continued as a regular sketch within the show. It was wildly popular and became an increasingly more prominent part of the program, so when Gleason decided to take a break from the hour-long variety show format, it became a stand-alone half-hours series from 1955 – 56. Sue Ane Langdon would appear as Alice in two 1962 sketches and Audrey Meadows would return as Alice in an hour-long 1966 musical sketch.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Beginning with the 1966 – 67 season and through the remainder of its run until 1970, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Jackie Gleason Show </i>was filmed in color and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners </i>installments<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> </i>of this era are known as “the Color <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Honeymooners</i>.” Sheila MacRae portrayed Alice in these mostly mini-musical episodes.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">From 1970 – 1978, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Honeymooners </i>aired as a series of nearly annual specials with Audrey Meadows returning as Alice in 1976. Finally, in 1985, a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Honeymooners</i> reunion special was broadcast in May and an anniversary special aired in October.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Of all the show's incarnations, it's the early <i>Honeymooners</i> I'm forever drawn to. Part of this, of course, is about the pure quality of the show during that period when it was at its peak. Is there a way you can know whether the doctor is more partial to expensive, brand-name drugs than his peers?</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">Or say you've got to find a nursing home for a loved one. Wouldn't you want to know whether the staff doctor regularly prescribes drugs known to be risky for seniors or overuses psychiatric drugs to sedate residents?</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">For most of us, evaluating a doctor's prescribing habits is just about impossible. Even doctors themselves have little way of knowing whether their drug choices fall in line with those of their peers.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">Once they graduate from medical school, physicians often have a tough time keeping up with the latest clinical trials and sorting through the hype on new drugs. Seldom are they monitored to see whether they are prescribing appropriately, and there isn't even universal agreement on what good prescribing is.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">This dearth of knowledge and insight matters for both patients and doctors. Drugs are complicated. Most come with side effects and risk-benefit calculations. What may work for one person may be absolutely inappropriate, or even harmful, for someone else.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">Antipsychotics, for example, are invaluable for treating severe psychiatric conditions. But they are too often used to sedate older patients suffering from dementia, despite a "black box" warning accompanying the drugs that they increase the risk of death in such patients.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">The American Geriatrics Society has also labeled dozens of other drugs risky for elderly patients because they increase the risk of dizziness, fainting and falling, among other things. In most cases, safer alternatives exist. Yet the more dangerous drugs continue to be prescribed for millions of older patients.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">And, as has been well documented by the Los Angeles Times and others, powerful painkillers are often misused and overprescribed, with sometimes deadly consequences.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">As reporters who have long investigated healthcare and exposed frightening variations in quality, we wondered why so much secrecy shrouds the prescribing habits of doctors.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">The information certainly isn't secret to drug companies. They spend millions of dollars buying prescription records from companies that purchase them from pharmacies. The drug makers then use the data to target their pitches and measure success. But when we tried to purchase the records from the companies that supply them to drug manufacturers, we were told we couldn't have them — at any price.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">We next turned to Medicare, a public program that provides drug coverage to 32 million seniors and the disabled and accounts for 1 of 4 prescriptions written annually. We filed a Freedom of Information Act request for prescribing data. After months of negotiation with officials, we were given a list of the drugs prescribed by every health professional to enrollees in Medicare's prescription drug program, known as Part D.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">What we found was disturbing. Although we didn't have access to patient names or medical records, it was clear that hundreds of physicians across the country were prescribing large numbers of dangerous, inappropriate or unnecessary drugs. And Medicare had done little, if anything, about it.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">One Miami psychiatrist, for example, wrote 8,900 prescriptions in 2010 for powerful antipsychotics for patients older than 65, including many with dementia. The doctor said in an interview that he'd never been contacted by Medicare.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">A rural Oklahoma doctor regularly prescribed the Alzheimer's drug Namenda for patients younger than 65 who did not have the disease. He told us it was because the drug helped calm the symptoms of autism and other developmental disabilities. But there is scant scientific support for this practice.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">Among the top prescribers of the most-abused painkillers, we found many who had been charged with crimes, convicted, disciplined by their state medical boards or terminated from state Medicaid programs for the poor. But nearly all remained eligible to prescribe for Medicare patients.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">If you or a loved one were a patient of one of these doctors, wouldn't you want to know this?</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">We have now taken the data and put it into an online database that allows anyone to look up a doctor's prescribing patterns and see how they compare with those of other doctors.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">This information is just a start. It can't tell you whether your doctor is doing something wrong, but it can give information that allows you to ask important questions. For instance, why is your doctor choosing a drug that his peers seldom do? Does your doctor favor expensive brand-name drugs when cheaper generics are available? Has your doctor been paid to give promotional talks for drug makers?</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">And we'd like to see the day when all prescribing by all health professionals, not just in Medicare, is a matter of public record.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">It's not only patients who benefit when medicine is more transparent. Doctors too can gain by comparing themselves to their peers and to those they admire. Clinics can see how their staffs stack up. And researchers can track patterns and examine why doctors prescribe the way they do.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">One doctor told us that after studying our online database, he cornered his colleagues and peppered them with questions about their prescribing. Most, he said, were surprised when he told them their drug tallies.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">Many aspects of doctors' practices remain private: The number of tests they order and procedures they perform. The number of times they make mistakes. These data could help inform the public too.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;">In the meantime, arming yourself with prescribing information allows you to be more active in your healthcare, or that of an aging or disabled loved one.</p><p style="margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px;"><em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal;">Former Times reporters Tracy Weber and Charles Ornstein are senior reporters at ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative journalism newsroom in New York. Cofimvaba ICT4RD Project graduation ceremony

The ICT4RD training in the capable hands of the lovely Maggie Verster and Adele Botha has been very successful at the Arthur Mfebe Secondary School. This training programme culminated in a gorgeous graduation ceremony for the 16 staff members of Arthur Mfebe at St. Marks hall on Friday 14 June 2013. In order to flee her working environment, the maid escaped the house and flagged down a bus to reach the Irvine Police.  </blockquote> <blockquote> Albayan hired the Kenyan maid in 2012 as a domestic servant in Syria while residing in her family’s palace. She allegedly stole passports from the maid upon her arrival in the U.S.<br> The four remaining Filipino maids eagerly agreed to leave with the police after authorities searched the home. </blockquote>You didn't think slavery ended with the Civil war, did you? We learned just yesterday that the National Archives has box after box of pleas from the relatives of people sold into slavery decades after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. A letter from Carrie Kinsey begs President Theodore Roosevelt for help in freeing her brother, sold at the age of 14 into involuntary servitude at a huge plantation called Kinderlou. <a href="http://politic365.com/2013/07/14/americas-twentieth-century-slavery/">Politics 365</a> tells us:<br> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> As dumbfounding as the story told by the Carrie Kinsey letter is, far more remarkable is what surrounds that letter at the National Archives. In the same box that holds her grief-stricken missive are at least half a dozen other pieces of correspondence recounting other stories of kidnapping, perversion of the courts, or human trafficking-as horrifying as, or worse than, Carrie Kinsey’s tale. It is the same in the next box on the shelf. And the one before. And the ones on either side of those. And the next and the next. And on and on. Thousands and thousands of plaintive letters and grimly bureaucratic responses-altogether at least 30,000 pages of original material-chronicle cases of forced labor and involuntary servitude in the South decades after the end of the Civil War. </blockquote>Of course if you're paying attention to Walmart you know <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/02/hey-wal-mart-lets-call-it-what-it-is.html">the giant retailer  had dealings with human traffickers</a> as recently as last year.<br> <br> <div> Mary Goudie, a member of Britain's House of Lords, has taken up the fight against slavery. Now add Bob McDonnell to that list.<br /><br />Conservative bloggers like <a href="http://bearingdrift.com/2013/07/10/on-conservativsm-vs-access/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+bearingdrift+%28Bearing+Drift%29" target="_blank">Willie Deutsch at Bearing Drift</a> have joined with Democratic bloggers in the mindless act of becoming participants in attacking the Virginia Republican Governor. What should be more disconcerting is the effect this circular firing squad will have on GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli who has also been <a href="http://www.c-ville.com/cuccinelli-mcdonnell-and-the-star-scientific-scandal-that-just-keeps-growing/#.Ud68GW2kNRw" target="_blank">caught up in the controversy with his own issue of unreported gifts</a> from Star Scientific and Jonnie Williams. When the far right is done with Bob McDonnell, will they then turn their guns on Cuccinelli?<br /><br />In the words of <i>Richmond Times-Dispatch</i> political writer <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/state-regional/government-politics/jeff-schapiro/schapiro-even-mcdonnell-s-friends-bracing-for-the-worst/article_245b13e4-371b-54cc-ab69-08165cdc980b.html">Jeff Schapiro</a>, "... all Democrats have to do is watch a great Republican tradition: cannibalism."<br /><br />The hemorrhaging needs to stop.<br /><br />Interestingly enough, in the shadows away from this controversy stands Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling. The far right had its fair share of attacking him earlier this year by calling him a RINO and questioning his conservative credentials. In hindsight, perhaps Bolling did the wisest thing by stepping aside in this toxic environment. Meanwhile, as Jim Hoeft  <a href="http://vapolitics.us/2013/07/bollings-office-says-business-as-usual/" target="_blank">reported,</a> it's business as usual in the LG's office as he goes about the job of working for the people of Virginia.<br /><br />The LG is also on the minds of the editorial board at Charlottesville's <a href="http://www.dailyprogress.com/opinion/editorials/bolling-in-shadows-as-mcdonnell-s-star-plunges/article_8311a3ea-e9c3-11e2-833f-0019bb30f31a.html" target="_blank"><i>Daily Progress</i></a>, wondering <i>what if</i> concerning Bolling's aborted campaign for Governor. Noting the issues surrounding the Governor, the <a href="http://www.dailyprogress.com/opinion/editorials/bolling-in-shadows-as-mcdonnell-s-star-plunges/article_8311a3ea-e9c3-11e2-833f-0019bb30f31a.html" target="_blank">Daily Progress</a> wrote:<br /><blockquote>“Much of this has occurred on center stage during a summer that was supposed to have belonged to Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a better man who stands in the shadows, cast there by a party that failed him and failed Virginia.<br /><br />Undercut by state GOP leaders whose political IQ’s can only be measured in minuses, Bolling was thrown to the side by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a man with more baggage than Samsonite.<br /><br />Rather than hold a primary to allow voters to select the next Republican candidate for governor, party string-pullers conducted the rough equivalent of a meeting in a smoke-filled room, holding a convention to hand Cuccinelli the nomination. <br /><br />Bolling could have taken his shot in 2009 — surely, he wishes now that he had — but he agreed to stand aside to unify the party, paving the path to McDonnell’s sweeping victory. The idea was that Bolling would wait his turn until 2013.<br /><br />Then along came Cuccinelli. One wonders how strongly the capital’s most powerful Republican stood for the friend who helped him win election. There are apparent prices to be paid for McDonnell’s friendship. Williams is Exhibit A, evidently.<br /><br />That has stirred rumblings about McDonnell’s possible early departure from Richmond. A conservative blogger claimed over the weekend that two sources told him the governor was preparing to resign in a plea deal to avoid ethics charges. McDonnell’s staff quickly denied the rumor.<br /><br />It’s a sign of how deep the governor is in his own mess. Were he to be forced out, moving Bolling into the mansion, Virginia would be served in the interim by a leader superior to the alternatives being offered up for the fall. Perhaps Bolling might gain fuel enough for a write-in run.<br /><br />That might be a dream, but it is far pleasanter than the nightmare now being lived out in the state’s highest office.</blockquote>What the far right's circular firing squad is doing is driving people like Laura Lennox of Richmond to<a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/opinion/your-opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article_2d1648dc-9440-5bf3-968b-678c444fd32a.html" target="_blank"> consider a write-in vote for Bill Bolling</a> while others have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Write-in-Bill-Bolling-for-Virginia-Governor-2013/599114856787021?hc_location=timeline" target="_blank">taken to Facebook.</a><br /><br />The loser in all this is the Republican Party, both statewide and nationally. Maybe we all need to reconsider the 11th commandment often quoted by Ronald Reagan: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.

Sweet Briar College was founded in <b>1901</b>, the legacy of Indiana Fletcher Williams, who left her entire estate to found an institution in memory of her only daughter, Daisy, who died at the age of 16 in <b>1884</b>. At the time of Mrs. Williams' death in 1900, her estate consisted of more than a million dollars, and over 8,000 acres of land, including the Sweet Briar Plantation.<br /><br />Sweet Briar House has been home to the presidents of the College since its founding in 1901. The former estate residence has been on the Virginia Landmarks Register since the 1970s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.<br /><br />The original house was built in the late 18th century by Joseph Crews. Originally known as Locust Ridge, the structure was a two-story, six-room farmhouse of red brick. In 1830 Elijah Fletcher bought the house and 1,000 acres for $7,000 from Penn family relatives of his wife, Maria Antoinette Crawford. Fletcher, a schoolteacher from Vermont who had come to nearby New Glasgow (now Clifton) to teach at an academy there, rose to prominence in the local community and in Lynchburg following his marriage in 1813.<br /><br />Called "Sweetbrier" for the abundance of wild roses on the property, it became the summer home for the Fletchers and their four children, Indiana, Elizabeth, Sidney, and Lucien. In 1841 the family made it their permanent residence, and in 1851-1852 the original T-shaped farmhouse was enlarged with the addition of the tower wings, showing the daughters' attraction to Italianate architecture they had seen during a grand tour of Europe.<br /><br />The house was furnished with pieces bought in New York and Philadelphia. In 1858, upon Elijah's death, his daughter Indiana inherited Sweetbrier, renaming it "Sweet Briar." In 1865 Indiana married a New York clergyman, James Henry Williams, and though the couple traveled back and forth between New York and Sweet Briar, they considered this to be their home.<br /><br />Sweet Briar College's first president, Mary K. Benedict, used Sweet Briar House as her residence. For the first years of the College it also housed faculty members, the post office, and the infirmary. The first floor also served as the administration building for the College until 1926.
