She had approached a mock replica of the “Mirror of Retribution” – where evildoers see their life replayed before they face punishment for their sins – and a demonic apparition had appeared out of nowhere through the looking glass. She calmed down from the shock. “He does have a nice collarbone,” she noticed. Any walk through this grim Hadean fairytale is laced with a mixture of curiosity, disgust and a little humour. The Ten Courts of Hell can be found at Haw Par Villa, a Chinese mythology theme park in Singapore with more than 1,000 statues and dioramas glorifying Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian folklore. Built in 1937 by brothers Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par – famous for selling the popular medicinal paste Tiger Balm – older locals look back fondly at a place where parents would bring children for an education in morality, complete with bloody visual aids. <img alt="Haw Par Villa theme park, Singapore" height="276" src="http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/pictures/2013/11/22/1385123616217/Haw-Par-Villa-theme-park--008.jpg" width="460"> One of the less gruesome statues at Haw Par Villa. Photograph: Alamy Thousands used to throng the park, and it once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with attractions like Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park. “Every Singaporean over the age of 35 probably has a picture of themselves at Haw Par,” said Desmond Sim, a local playwright. Those pictures would probably include the following statues, each made from plastered cement paste and wire mesh: a human head on the body of a crab, a frog in a baseball cap riding an ostrich, and a grandmother suckling at the breast of another woman. But the highlight of this bizarre park are the Ten Courts. A tableau of severe disciplines are shown in painstaking detail, along with a placard stating the sin that warranted it. Tax dodgers are pounded by a stone mallet, spikes driven into a skeletal chest cavity like a bloodthirsty pestle in mortar. Spot the tiny tongue as it is pulled out of a screaming man, watch the demon flinging a young girl into a hill of knives. Ungratefulness results in a blunt metal rod cutting a very large, fleshly heart out of a woman. Perhaps the most gruesome depiction is an executioner pulling tiny intestines out from a man tied to a pole. The colons were visible and brown. The crime? For some it’s a refreshing antidote to the mall-culture, but it looks like mall culture is winning out over a day out in hell. RemSG, the blogger behind the Remember Singapore website, believes new investment is needed. “Its future, in my opinion, is certainly pessimistic,” he said. During our visit, a father could be heard telling his bespectacled daughter to “do your homework, and you can spend more time with the iPad”. Unless, of course, you want to be crushed by a boulder. Haw Par Villa is next to the Haw Par Villa MRT station, and is open daily from 9am to 7pm. Entry is free. <hr> THREE MORE BIZARRE THEME PARKS <h2>Suoi Tien Cultural Theme Park, Vietnam</h2> <img alt="Suoi Tien Park near Saigon" height="276" src="http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/pictures/2013/11/22/1385123805910/Suoi-Tien-Park-near-Saigo-008.jpg" width="460"> Suoi Tien Park near Saigon. Photograph: Alamy A winning combination of water slides and Buddhism, this splash park in Vietnam is a fitting homage to the nation’s most popular religion. Legendary animals such as dragons, unicorns, tortoises and phoenix adorn the park, while staff dress up as the mischief-making monkey character from Buddhist mythology to entertain visitors. The vast attraction features swimming pools, boat rides and, for the real thrill seekers, a pool with over a thousand hungry crocodiles that visitors can feed with raw meat. More information: vietnamonline.com <h2>JeJu Love Land, South Korea</h2> Unsurprisingly, Love Land is the “only sexual theme park in Korea”. Opened in 2004, the attraction showcases works of art created by 20 graduates from Hongik University in Seoul – as well as regular visiting artists – and is a place “where sexually oriented art and eroticism meet”. The park is littered with sculptures demonstrating the various sexual positions, as well as plenty of phallic statues and stone labia to cast your eyes over. There are also fun interactive exhibits, such as the invitingly named “masturbation cycle”. Sticking to the obvious theme, the park’s two mascots consist of Bulkkeuni, a phallus with a red nose and Ssaekkeuni, a vagina that wears a floppy pink hat. jejuloveland.com <h2>Republic of the Children, Argentina</h2> Based in the city of La Plata, the Republic of the Children is a mini town where the children rule. It features all the institutions you would hope a functioning society to have; parliament, courthouse, church, even a municipal bank. The park was opened in 1951 and was built by the Eva Perón Foundation, a charity set up by the Argentine political leader – and hopes to teach children how to be good citizens in a democratic country. The Magdalen Arms: restaurant review | Jay Rayner [ BeritaTerkini ]

In reality it will end up as a review of the pie we ate there. A bloody marvellous pie. So less a review than a love letter, written on paper scented with dripping. There are some people who, reading about this pie, will clench their fists and bang things. They will bellow that it is NOT A PIE, for that requires a pastry shell from top to bottom and around the sides. They write to me about this, these defenders of pie, with a fury out of all proportion to, well, most things. All I can say is that if you are the sort of person to get proper furious because I called a dish with a suet pastry lid a pie, then congratulations. You clearly have nothing more important to get cross about. But let’s leave the pie in the middle of the table for the moment, and consider the pub in which it is served. The Magdalen Arms – pronounce it how you wish; I merely have to type it – is a rare thing: a nice place to eat in Oxford. It’s a peculiar town, full of people who are brilliant at passing exams and some who happen to be clever, too. A few have book deals or research grants, or both. There’s money and lofty versions of taste, acquired or otherwise, and yet very few places in which to use any of it. It will take someone smarter than me to work out why this is; perhaps someone smart enough to be at Oxford. All of that makes the Magdalen Arms not just a nice gastropub but a public service, delivered through dishes which are sturdy and big boned, served on tables without tablecloths in a broad, low-ceilinged room. The walls are painted a deep claret which helps to make a functional space rather cosy on a damp November lunchtime. It serves beer and has a well-priced list of almost entirely French and Italian wines. What matters is its DNA. The current version of the Magdalen Arms is run by a former chef and a former manager from the Anchor and Hope in Waterloo, which in turn was born out of Fergus Henderson’s St John in Clerkenwell. The St John story is well known. Henderson, a trained architect with an architect’s love of white space, brought his cosmopolitan upbringing to bear on a few classic British traditions. He put roast bone marrow on the menu, and chitterlings and big, shiny-domed pies and is credited with reviving a whole category of British cookery. In truth he did nothing of the sort. He came up with a mythologised version which is far better than anything our great-grandparents ever got their rotting teeth around. To cook this sort of British food, you have first to be steeped in French technique. (Indeed, Henderson freely admits he got the bone marrow dish idea from watching the movie La Grande Bouffe with a whole bunch of other food pervs one wet afternoon in the Hampstead Everyman.) Throw in an Italian hankering for uncluttered plates and a taste for what Leopold Bloom in Ulysses called “the inner organs of beasts and fowls… which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine” and a food cult is born. <img alt="Pear and almond tart at the Magdalen Arms" height="276" src="http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Observer/Pix/pictures/2013/11/20/1384948355357/Pear-and-almond-tart-at-t-008.jpg" width="460"> The pear and almond tart. Photograph: Sophia Evans for the Observer St John style food is now like nits in Year 4: bloody everywhere. I have seen the bone-marrow dish on menus from one end of this country to the other – even eaten it in Los Angeles. As a result, St John is arguably now a victim of its own huge success. Getting a table there used to require the thumb prints of three European popes. These days it’s much easier. After all, you don’t have to go to St John to eat St John’s food. You can go to Anchor and Hope, or Great Queen Street or Hereford Road. Or you can go to the Magdalen Arms in Oxford, where you can start with warm smoked herring, which could give its glossier and less-sustainable cousin smoked eel a serious run for its money. There is wood smoke and fish oils that mean business (but won’t make you clever; ignore the voodoo medicine) and to cut through it all, a potato and parsley salad with the poke of capers. There is thin-sliced “duck ham” with fat the colour of polished alabaster and meat the same shade of claret as the walls, all sent on its holidays to the Med courtesy of a fennel, olive and orange salad. And then there is the pie, served in a big enamelled cast iron dish. It costs £28 for two, but would serve three. The burnished suet crust is so shiny you can see your reflection in it. For a while we stare. It is one of those dishes that forces you into the present tense. The rain outside does not matter. We have pie. Finally I take a spoon to that suet crust and there is a crack; the sound that only a pastry made with animal fats will supply. There are other things on the menu: short rib with celeriac purée, lamb faggots with split pea, turnip and mint, tagliatelle with forest mushrooms and garlic butter. But we always knew it would be the pie and that while we will eat other things it is the pie we will talk about later when asked how lunch was. There is a bowl of crunchy buttered greens. We eat some because we think we should. We do not finish it because that would fill up room that could be left for pie. We order sticky toffee pudding because the pie has earned its company. It’s a serviceable version, though towards the end a little dry, which is never a good thing with sticky toffee pudding. A pear and almond tart is equally fine. But my companion and I both know that they are not what lunch was about; that as we roll into the cab taking us away, all we will say to each other is, “Oof, that pie.’ And then we will sigh, happily. ■ Of all the son- of-St John ventures, perhaps the most obscure is the Canton Arms, an old boozer in Stockwell, London, which has been given nothing in the way of a fancy-pants makeover. The showers leaked through the ceilings onto the electric lights, there were no smoke alarms, the bedding was unwashed and the kitchen was filthy. Because there was nowhere else for 10 people to transfer at late notice we made the best of it. Since then the owner has refused to return our £100 deposit. Holidaylettings has been no help. I think people feel this is a safer way to rent a holiday cottage because of the well known name but it appears it makes no difference. FA, London Holidaylettings, part of TripAdvisor, allows owners to advertise through its site. It points out that your contract was with the owner, but insists it mediates between both parties in the event of a dispute. It has now removed this owner from its listings until he raises his game and has “worked with him” to ensure your deposit is returned. This you have now finally received, minus a £5 fee levied by PayPal. If you had paid the owner directly via credit card you could lodge a claim against your card issuer under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act as the property was misdescribed. <h4 class="introduction"></h4> Botanical food supplements have less than six months to achieve herbal medicines status or be removed from shelves in the UK – but the sector says the law remains unclear. The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) this morning announced the April 2014 deadline, citing safety concerns in firmly enforcing the 2004 Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD). “Natural doesn’t always mean safe and some unlicensed herbal products can be harmful and some may have serious side effects,” said Dr Linda Anderson from the MHRA’s Licensing Division. “It is now nearly ten years since the implementation of the [THMPD]. Companies have had this time to bring products up to appropriate standards and apply for a [THMPD] registration.” Dr Robert Verkerk, executive and scientific director of the Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-I), said despite the action, the food-medicine borderline remained unclear, along with the MHRA’s position on it. “There is still a real lack of clarity as to what constitutes an unregistered herbal medicine versus a legal botanical food supplement,” Dr Verkerk told us this morning. “The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has developed some useful case law on this, but different EU member states, including the UK, have run rough-shod across these precedents.” “Many companies that have long histories of selling high-quality botanical food supplements that have never been associated with adverse events are left in a quandary as to how the MHRA will respond to them, especially after the ‘sell-through’ expires next year.” Market constriction? <div class="object-left"> <div class="content-view-embeddedmedia"> <div class="class-image"> <div class="attribute-image"> <img alt="" height="141" src="http://www.nutraingredients.com/var/plain_site/storage/images/media/images/echinacea-purpurea/8583854-1-eng-GB/Echinacea-purpurea_medium.jpg" title="" width="200"> </div> </div> </div> </div> Dr Verkerk said the picture was further complicated by a food supplement exemption that remained in the law – Section 12(2) of the 1968 Medicines Act. “But if recent determinations by the MHRA are anything to go by, it seems likely that the MHRA will further step up its enforcement operations next year. This will likely cause the loss from the market of food supplement products that have no quality or safety concerns, as well as significantly reduced consumer choice.” The THMPD became active in April 2011, but its market implementation has differed among the EU’s 28 member states, giving products sell-through periods. From FIE, Jean-Christophe Mano, executive manager at French firm Pharmanager agreed with Dr Verkerk that EU law implied the maintenance of a dual route to market, and he noted that the precedent had been established in Spain and other EU member states. Don't plan for retirement; plan to keep working This works for everyone. If everyone does it, then we can expect many of the younger among us to be stuck in low paying jobs and/or <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/LNS14000036">the unemployment lines</a>. As an added bonus, since many are already straddled with student debt they won't be able to afford new homes. And without the ability to afford new homes, we can expect another housing crash. 3. Tap your house as an asset sooner rather than later This works for everyone. If everyone does it, then we'd expect to see another housing crash. Selling your house and moving into a smaller less expensive one is net selling on average (by dollar amount). A crash is especially likely if everyone is consuming less and delaying retirement. See steps #1 and #2. 4. Stay in equities longer than you may think 'safe <div style="color: #666666;">You can increase the chance that you'll earn a higher return by staying in equities for longer and in a greater proportion.</div> Desperate people feel the need to do unsafe things. Increasing the chance implies that there is still a chance you could earn a lower return by staying in equities for longer and in greater proportion. This would make sense since stocks are considered "risk assets" and each one of the previous 3 steps in could be considered crash worthy on their own. Further, the wicked combination of all three steps at the same time could prove to be very crash worthy indeed. <div style="color: #666666;">In the post–World War II era, when interest rates rose after a long period of artificially low rates, bondholders lost money.</div> This is opposed to the pre-World War II era, when interest rates did not rise after a long period of artificially low rates. All of the past week’s data point to heightened deflationary risks. Paltry U.S. consumer price index (CPI) figures, German producer prices undershooting and another bout of weakness in commodity prices, particularly oil, suggest deflation is winning the battle over central bank stimulus. Asset prices may be bid up further. And the market bears may have to wait before a more serious correction happens. The catalyst for that is likely to be a loss of faith in central bank stimulus.</div> I'm a believer in the loss of faith theory, for what that's worth. Over the long-term, I never had it to begin with. I haven't been buying long-term bonds because of the Fed. <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/08/top-10-assets-of-households-and.html">I have been buying in spite of them.</a> <div style="color: #666666;">It's funny that so much time is spent warning us about a treasury bubble when individually purchased treasury bonds make up such a tiny amount of our personal assets (less than 2%). In my experience, very few people even know how to buy them directly from the government. I'm not judging. I've seen many hours of financial TV in my life and I've never seen anyone offer advice on how to buy a treasury bond. I don't recall the term I-Bond ever coming up either. It's almost like there's no money in it for them if bonds are purchased directly from the government.</div> This is not investment advice.
