PREVIEW: FSU hoping to avoid slip up against Syracuse

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://scni.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/gps/uploads/250542/web1_freeman_t300.jpg?8aff03de2423e912a2467e97388a07f5331c05b6" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State has passed every test and chopped down every giant in its path this season, looking almost unstoppable en route to a perfect 9-0 record and No. 2 BCS ranking.</p><br /><p>And with only Syracuse, Idaho and Florida - teams with a combined 10-18 record - remaining on the regular-season schedule, it appears FSU could cruise to the finish line.</p><br /><p>Instead, this is when the real pressure begins.</p><br /><p>Any slipups, looking ahead or successful distractions won't just be an 'L' - it will also mean losing a chance to play for the national title.</p><br /><p>Lucky for the Seminoles, their coach has prepared them all year for these very moments.</p><br /><p>'This team is doing a really nice job of eliminating that clutter, and we have to continue to do that - and we will continue to do that,' FSU's Jimbo Fisher said of his secret to keeping his guys focused when everyone can see the proverbial finish line, where a chance to play - or be - the No. 1 team in the nation at the end of the season awaits. 'In all three phases, we still want to work on and improve on and clean up (any mistakes).'</p><br /><p>The loss by then-No. 2 Oregon to Stanford allowed FSU to move up in the BCS polls, and Florida State's 59-3 rout of Wake Forest also locked up the ACC's Atlantic Division title for the Seminoles, who could play any one of five Coastal Division opponents for the ACC championship on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, N.C. So while FSU (9-0 overall, 7-0 in the ACC) watches the conference title race shake out, the road to finishing strong begins today at home with the Orangemen (5-4, 3-2).</p><br /><p>And just like almost every other week prior, Fisher didn't change his tune when talking about the Seminoles' next seemingly overmatched opponent, peppering Syracuse - which will enter the game as whopping 40-point underdogs - with compliments aplenty.</p><br /><p>All part of staying locked in on the task at hand, Fisher says.</p><br /><p>'We'll have a great game with Syracuse,' said the coach, whose team has beaten its first nine opponents this season by an average of 40 points a game. 'Syracuse is playing extremely well. They come in on a two-game winning streak. They've give up three points total in their last two games. And they're tough to defend.'</p><br /><p>All that might be true, but there's also no denying the Seminoles are simply playing on another planet right now. FSU freshman quarterback and likely Heisman Trophy frontrunner Jameis Winston leads the nation's second-ranked scoring offense that's averaging 52 points a game and has outscored three top-25 opponents by a combined 155-28 in a span of four games, while the Seminoles' fourth-ranked total defense seems to have a new star every week.</p><br /><p>Last week it was freshman safety Nate Andrews, who made the most of his first career start by picking off two passes - including a pick-six - and forcing a fumble. Of course, FSU's defense intercepted Wake's QBs six times last Saturday to move them into a tie for the FBS lead with nine, and they also got their first boost from special teams this year when Kermit Whitfield returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score, adding to FSU's arsenal of weapons.</p><br /><p>'Obviously, that's a great team,' Wake Forest offensive lineman Frank Souza said after Saturday's game to surmise the Demon Deacons' 56-point beat down.</p><br /><p>Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer feels the same way - and he's only watched FSU on film.</p><br /><p>'They're one of the best college football teams I've seen in a long time,' the Orange's first-year coach said this week. 'I thought (earlier in the year) when we saw Clemson (and lost 49-14) that that group was really special, but this group (at Florida State) is unbelievable.'</p><br /><p>Syracuse is coming off back-to-back wins against Wake Forest and Maryland, giving up just a field goal against the Terps and blanking the Demon Deacons. The Orange also boast the ACC's fourth-leading rusher in Jerome Smith, who is second in the conference in touchdowns with 11.</p><br /><p>Florida State almost saw its season derailed earlier this year by another talented running back, ACC leading rusher Andre Williams. Williams ran for 149 yards and helped Boston College jump out to the biggest lead any team has had on the Seminoles this year, 17-3, in late September before FSU stormed back to win, 48-34.</p><br /><p>'Physical, hard, tough, downhill ... ' Fisher said when asked to describe Smith. 'They bring it now.'</p><br /><p>FSU must do the same, now more than ever.</p><br /><p>Even at home against a four-loss team. Even against a first-year ACC school like Syracuse. After all, the pressure's officially on like never before.</p><br /><p>'Where we're at (in the BCS) should not matter. How we play and prepare is what should matter. If they ever believe in our system, if they ever believe in eliminating the clutter, if they believe in what we're teaching, then now is the time,' Fisher said. 'Success, to me, reveals what you really are, where you're at, what you're doing. If you can keep the selfishness out of it and then (have) the ability to focus and play one at a time, then that's the key. And that's what we have to do.'</p><br /></div>

I have been toying with the idea of acquiring an AK-47.<br />I really don't know that much about them so I thought I would start doing some homework.<br /><br />After watching a few YouTube videos and seeing the absolute fucking garbage for sale out there, I may just reconsider this option.<br /><br />This is a pretty good video that shows you what to be aware of concerning workmanship and parts quality from a couple of different suppliers.<br />This first piece of shit is to be avoided at all costs.<br />The video is almost ten minutes long and if you already know about this stuff then you probably don't need to watch it.<br />If, however, you are like me this is good stuff to know so that you don't plunk down some hard earned FRN's and wind up with a piece of junk.<br /><br /><iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/nHyixxEat6c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Samsung expert: No one buys Samsung gadgets for touch

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Michael Wagner, an expert witness hired by Samsung, says Apple has overstated how much money it's due for Samsung's infringement on Apple's 'pinch to zoom' tech.</p><br /><p><img src="http://asset3.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/12/05/Shara_Tibken_60x43.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><img src="http://asset0.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/11/09/courthouse_610x458.JPG" width="600"/><br /><p>(Credit: Michelle Meyers/CNET)</p><br /><p>SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A Samsung expert on Friday made his case for why the Korean giant should pay Apple only $52 million in damages, saying there's no evidence that anyone has bought Samsung devices because of a particular patented Apple technology.</p><br /><p>An expert hired by Apple had determined the company was due $114 million in lost profits because of Samsung's use of technology under Apple's patent No. 7,844,915, also known as 'pinch to zoom.' The '915 patent covers technology that can distinguish whether a user is scrolling with one finger versus using several touch points at once for a pinch-to-zoom action.</p><br /><p>However, Michael Wagner, an accountant and lawyer hired by Samsung, said there's no evidence from either company that shows consumers bought Samsung devices because they liked that particular touch-screen feature. As a result, he believes Apple should receive no money for lost profits.</p><br /><p>'I believe people bought these phones for other features,' Wagner said. That includes bigger, AMOLED screens; faster processors; and 4G LTE.</p><br /><p>The comments come on the fourth day of a retrial for damages that Samsung owes Apple for infringing on five of its patents. A judge in March vacated about $450 million of an original award. Samsung is still on the hook for $600 million, no matter what happens in the retrial.</p><br /><p>Wagner spent his time on the stand Friday disputing calculations made by Apple's expert accountant, Julie Davis. In particular, he said that she didn't correctly determine Samsung's profits from the infringing devices and she attached too much value to Apple's lost profits stemming from Samsung's use of a touch-screen technology patent.</p><br /><p>The two companies are battling over how much more Samsung owes Apple for infringing on five of its patents. Apple -- using Davis' calculations -- says Samsung owes it $380 million. Samsung says it should pay $52 million.</p><br /><p>A big part of the discrepancy comes from differing views on how much Apple lost in profits and how much it should be due for royalties.</p><br /><p>One expert, MIT professor John Hauser, estimated three Apple patents, including the '915 patent, adds about $100 in value to a $199 smartphone or $90 in value to a $499 tablet. Davis said Apple lost out on $114 million in profits because of the Samsung copycat devices. She also calculated Samsung's profits to be $231 million, and said reasonable royalties owed to Apple total $35 million. Apple estimates it would have sold 360,000 devices if Samsung hadn't released infringing rivals.</p><br /><p>Samsung, meanwhile, said Apple shouldn't receive any money for lost profits, $52.7 million for Samsung's profits, and royalties of only $28,452 because the patents have limitations.</p><br /><p>Wagner on Friday said Davis should have deducted operating expenses for marketing, R&D, and other items from her calculation of Samsung's profit from the infringing devices.</p><br /><p>'Davis calculated not a penny of these operating expenses, which I believe are a necessary expense,' Wagner said. 'You can't sell a phone without incurring those types of costs.'</p><br /><p>As for lost profits, Judge Lucy Koh on November 7 granted Samsung's motion to strike the lost profits calculations of Davis because Davis' calculations relied on an assumption that Samsung would not have started its efforts to design around Apple's patents until it received actual notice of infringement. That ruling meant that only one patent -- '915 -- could be used to calculate lost profits, Koh said, because it was based on the appropriate design around period start dates.</p><br /><p>However, according to a court document, less than two days before the retrial was set to begin, Apple declared that it planned to argue for lost profit damages for three other patents anyway, despite the fact its expert concluded it wasn't entitled damages for those patents. It planned to use a new, alternative theory to argue for lost profits, the court filing said.</p><br /><p>Koh on Tuesday issued another order blocking Apple from making such an argument. That meant only the '915 patent could be used to determine lost profits.</p><br /><p>'The Court is concerned that Apple's new lost profits theory will invite the jury to come up with a lost profits award founded on little more than pure speculation,' she said.</p><br /><p>Court kicked off Tuesday with jury selection in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The companies should wrap up witness testimony Monday and make closing arguments Tuesday. A jury of six women and two men will then deliberate to determine the new damages amount.</p><br />Apple v. Samsung redux: What you need to know (FAQ)<br /><p>Apple originally filed suit against Samsung in April 2011, accusing the Korean company of copying the look and feel of its products. Samsung countersued two months later over patent infringement and said it was at work on touch-screen phones with giant rectangular screens and rounded corners well before Apple showed up. The initial trial, which stretched more than three weeks in August 2012, wrapped both of those cases in one, somehow squeezing together the patent infringement issues, alongside antitrust claims, and even trade dress issues.</p><br /><p>In August of last year, a nine-person jury sided with Apple on a majority of its patent infringement claims against Samsung. At that time, the jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages, much less than the $2.75 billion sought by the Cupertino, Calif., electronics giant. Samsung, which asked for $421 million in its countersuit, didn't get anything.</p><br /><p>However, Koh in March ordered a new trial to recalculate some of the damages in the case, striking $450.5 million off the original judgment against Samsung. What that means is Samsung is still on the hook for about $600 million in damages, but a new jury has to decide how much else it owes.</p><br /><p>The products in question include the Galaxy Prevail, Gem, Indulge, Infuse 4G, Galaxy SII AT&T, Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Exhibit 4G, Galaxy Tab, Nexus S 4G, Replenish, and Transform. The Prevail in particular racked up $57.9 million of the damages tally, which Koh said was a failure on the jury's part, since the device was found to infringe only on utility patents, and not on design patents.</p><br /></div>

Children’s Fund spokesman Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva. Work crews and heavy equipment cleared debris from roadsides, but side streets remained piled with the sodden, tangled remains of homes.</p> <p>In front of the San Fernando Elementary School, government workers distributed sacks of aid to a restless crowd of hundreds who had spent the last week camped in shattered wooden classrooms or in a main school building with floors covered in wet black sand. Nearby, about a dozen body bags were neatly lined up by the roadside.</p> <p>Survivors living in the school said they had received little help since the disaster.</p> <p>Rica Mobilla, an 18-year-old mother of one, said local authorities showed up two days after the disaster, handing out four kilograms of rice and a few packs of noodles for her family of thirteen. Samsung expert: No one buys Samsung gadgets for touch

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Michael Wagner, an expert witness hired by Samsung, says Apple has overstated how much money it's due for Samsung's infringement on Apple's 'pinch to zoom' tech.</p><br /><p><img src="http://asset3.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2012/12/05/Shara_Tibken_60x43.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><img src="http://asset0.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/11/09/courthouse_610x458.JPG" width="600"/><br /><p>(Credit: Michelle Meyers/CNET)</p><br /><p>SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A Samsung expert on Friday made his case for why the Korean giant should pay Apple only $52 million in damages, saying there's no evidence that anyone has bought Samsung devices because of a particular patented Apple technology.</p><br /><p>An expert hired by Apple had determined the company was due $114 million in lost profits because of Samsung's use of technology under Apple's patent No. 7,844,915, also known as 'pinch to zoom.' The '915 patent covers technology that can distinguish whether a user is scrolling with one finger versus using several touch points at once for a pinch-to-zoom action.</p><br /><p>However, Michael Wagner, an accountant and lawyer hired by Samsung, said there's no evidence from either company that shows consumers bought Samsung devices because they liked that particular touch-screen feature. As a result, he believes Apple should receive no money for lost profits.</p><br /><p>'I believe people bought these phones for other features,' Wagner said. That includes bigger, AMOLED screens; faster processors; and 4G LTE.</p><br /><p>The comments come on the fourth day of a retrial for damages that Samsung owes Apple for infringing on five of its patents. A judge in March vacated about $450 million of an original award. Samsung is still on the hook for $600 million, no matter what happens in the retrial.</p><br /><p>Wagner spent his time on the stand Friday disputing calculations made by Apple's expert accountant, Julie Davis. In particular, he said that she didn't correctly determine Samsung's profits from the infringing devices and she attached too much value to Apple's lost profits stemming from Samsung's use of a touch-screen technology patent.</p><br /><p>The two companies are battling over how much more Samsung owes Apple for infringing on five of its patents. Apple -- using Davis' calculations -- says Samsung owes it $380 million. Samsung says it should pay $52 million.</p><br /><p>A big part of the discrepancy comes from differing views on how much Apple lost in profits and how much it should be due for royalties.</p><br /><p>One expert, MIT professor John Hauser, estimated three Apple patents, including the '915 patent, adds about $100 in value to a $199 smartphone or $90 in value to a $499 tablet. Davis said Apple lost out on $114 million in profits because of the Samsung copycat devices. She also calculated Samsung's profits to be $231 million, and said reasonable royalties owed to Apple total $35 million. Apple estimates it would have sold 360,000 devices if Samsung hadn't released infringing rivals.</p><br /><p>Samsung, meanwhile, said Apple shouldn't receive any money for lost profits, $52.7 million for Samsung's profits, and royalties of only $28,452 because the patents have limitations.</p><br /><p>Wagner on Friday said Davis should have deducted operating expenses for marketing, R&D, and other items from her calculation of Samsung's profit from the infringing devices.</p><br /><p>'Davis calculated not a penny of these operating expenses, which I believe are a necessary expense,' Wagner said. 'You can't sell a phone without incurring those types of costs.'</p><br /><p>As for lost profits, Judge Lucy Koh on November 7 granted Samsung's motion to strike the lost profits calculations of Davis because Davis' calculations relied on an assumption that Samsung would not have started its efforts to design around Apple's patents until it received actual notice of infringement. That ruling meant that only one patent -- '915 -- could be used to calculate lost profits, Koh said, because it was based on the appropriate design around period start dates.</p><br /><p>However, according to a court document, less than two days before the retrial was set to begin, Apple declared that it planned to argue for lost profit damages for three other patents anyway, despite the fact its expert concluded it wasn't entitled damages for those patents. It planned to use a new, alternative theory to argue for lost profits, the court filing said.</p><br /><p>Koh on Tuesday issued another order blocking Apple from making such an argument. That meant only the '915 patent could be used to determine lost profits.</p><br /><p>'The Court is concerned that Apple's new lost profits theory will invite the jury to come up with a lost profits award founded on little more than pure speculation,' she said.</p><br /><p>Court kicked off Tuesday with jury selection in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The companies should wrap up witness testimony Monday and make closing arguments Tuesday. A jury of six women and two men will then deliberate to determine the new damages amount.</p><br />Apple v. Samsung redux: What you need to know (FAQ)<br /><p>Apple originally filed suit against Samsung in April 2011, accusing the Korean company of copying the look and feel of its products. Samsung countersued two months later over patent infringement and said it was at work on touch-screen phones with giant rectangular screens and rounded corners well before Apple showed up. The initial trial, which stretched more than three weeks in August 2012, wrapped both of those cases in one, somehow squeezing together the patent infringement issues, alongside antitrust claims, and even trade dress issues.</p><br /><p>In August of last year, a nine-person jury sided with Apple on a majority of its patent infringement claims against Samsung. At that time, the jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages, much less than the $2.75 billion sought by the Cupertino, Calif., electronics giant. Samsung, which asked for $421 million in its countersuit, didn't get anything.</p><br /><p>However, Koh in March ordered a new trial to recalculate some of the damages in the case, striking $450.5 million off the original judgment against Samsung. What that means is Samsung is still on the hook for about $600 million in damages, but a new jury has to decide how much else it owes.</p><br /><p>The products in question include the Galaxy Prevail, Gem, Indulge, Infuse 4G, Galaxy SII AT&T, Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Exhibit 4G, Galaxy Tab, Nexus S 4G, Replenish, and Transform. The Prevail in particular racked up $57.9 million of the damages tally, which Koh said was a failure on the jury's part, since the device was found to infringe only on utility patents, and not on design patents.</p><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://media.spokesman.com/photos/2013/11/16/1116journey-pineda_t210.jpg?74a72ef94756bccc16ea1c78066b52f96b62dbc7" width="600"/><br /><p>TACLOBAN, Philippines - Since the typhoon hit, Danny Estember has been hiking three hours round-trip into the mountains each day to obtain what he can only hope is clean water for his five daughters and two sons.</p><br /><p>The exhausting journey is necessary because safe water is desperately scarce in this storm-ravaged portion of the Philippines. Without it, people struggling to rebuild and even survive risk catching intestinal and other diseases that can spread if they're unable to wash properly.</p><br /><p>While aid agencies work to provide a steady supply, survivors have resorted to scooping from streams, catching rainwater in buckets and smashing open pipes to obtain what is left from disabled pumping stations. With at least 600,000 people homeless, the demand is massive.</p><br /><p>'I'm thirsty and hungry. I'm worried - no food, no house, no water, no money,' said Estember, a 50-year-old ambulance driver.</p><br /><p>Thousands of other people who sought shelter under the solid roof of the Tacloban City Astrodome also must improvise, taking water from wherever they can - a broken water pipe or a crumpled tarp. The water is salty and foul tasting but it is all many have had for days.</p><br /><p>Providing clean, safe drinking water is key to preventing the toll of dead and injured from rising in the weeks after a major natural disaster. Not only do survivors need to stay hydrated, they also need to be protected from waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.</p><br /><p>Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake was followed by a cholera outbreak that health officials say has killed more than 8,000 people and sickened nearly 600,000. Some studies have shown that cholera may have been introduced in Haiti by U.N. troops from Nepal, where the disease is endemic.</p><br /><p>Washing regularly, using latrines and boiling drinking water are the best ways to avoid contracting diarrhea and other ailments that could burden already stressed health services.</p><br /><p>It took several days for aid groups to bring large quantities of water to Tacloban, the eastern Philippine city where the typhoon wreaked its worst destruction. By Friday, tankers were arriving. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/lyft-prime-time-tip.png?w=400" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>After a year and a half of keeping a flat fare on all its rides, on-demand transportation startup Lyft is set to begin a test of dynamic pricing based on demand. It's testing out the new pricing model, which it calls 'Prime Time Tips,' in Los Angeles beginning today, as a way to make more drivers available during peak demand.</p><br /><p>Lyft historically has shied away from demand-based pricing, partly as a way to differentiate itself from competitor Uber. But as its popularity has increased, the company also faces periods in which demand outstrips supply. While the company says that it has made many backend improvements to increase ride availability, Lyft is hoping that providing higher tips during periods of high demand will encourage more drivers to take passengers.</p><br /><p>With that in mind, the Prime Time Tips will be automatically triggered when rides outnumber drivers. Passengers will be alerted with a notification screen, a la Uber, before they choose to request a ride at the higher fare.</p><br /><p>That said, Lyft's initial test of 'Prime Time Tips' varies a little bit from the way Uber currently does it. For one thing, Lyft is capping increases at 25 percent, compared to the 2x or more that Uber's surge prices can hit.</p><br /><p>Another way that Lyft is trying to differentiate - it says that 100 percent of any price increase during high demand will be passed on directly to drivers, with Lyft taking only its usual base fare. That contrasts from Uber in that the latter company has a fixed commission split which remains the same in periods of surge and non-surge pricing.</p><br /><p>Lyft believes that by structuring its pricing that way, it can still incentivize drivers to keep picking up passengers, while providing a fair price to passengers.</p><br /><p>For now, Lyft is testing the pricing scheme in Los Angeles, which is one of its oldest markets. Lyft co-founder and president John Zimmer said that one of the reasons it's testing out 'Primetime Tips' there is it can be too hard to find a ride there during peak demand. It's unclear if that test will extend to its other 17 markets, but in the meantime, Lyft probably wants to see what the reaction is like in L.A. and what effect it might have in curbing demand and increasing supply there.</p><br /><p><strong>Kind of related:</strong> Earlier today, competitor SideCar sent an email to passengers saying that it would move from donations to a flat fare structure in California, where the Public Utilities Commission has given its approval for new ride-sharing services. That means its passengers will be able to know how much a ride will cost once they've entered in their starting point and destination. Zimmer told me this afternoon that Lyft, too, would be moving away from donations to a fare structure in California as well. Stay tuned!</p><br /></div>

Patience.<br />3. Real economic growth.<br />4. A hawkish Fed.<br />5. Sarcasm.<br /><br />In all seriousness, <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/graph/?g=ovb">the 3-month treasury yield didn't hit 1% until 1948</a>. That was nearly two decades after the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Street_Crash_of_1929">stock market crash of 1929</a>. In hindsight, savers couldn't even count on World War II to get yields higher. So why is there so much hope now?<br /><br />I'm clearly not an optimist. Other than <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-long-term-death-of-real-yields.html">the long-term death of real yields</a>, there's very little I count on. It's been a central theme of mine since turning permabearish in 2004. I'm not saying that the "death" is guaranteed to continue, but I would be among the last to bet that savers will soon be handsomely rewarded on their <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/SAVINGS">$7 trillion in savings deposits</a>. That's six times what it was in 1995.<br /><br />In fact, I'd probably be fighting <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/graph/?g=ovd">the Japanese</a> over that last bet opportunity!<br /><br /><a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2011/02/more-dangerous-advice-from-jeremy.html">Long-term TIPS bonds are/were the bubble?</a> Seriously? At least <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/DFII30">long-term TIPS bonds</a> are still paying a positive real yield, unlike the <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/BNK5YRW156N">0.51% nominal yield on the typical 5-year CD</a>. And with $7 trillion in savings deposits, is that low rate really all that shocking?
