Putting October Chill Into Perspective

The couple of mornings with lows below 40 degrees (Friday and Saturday both dropping to 37) have brought the first suburban frosts and freezes and have brought us our coldest mornings since April. With the exception of 2010, we've been here, done that, each...and every...October. Some years, like 2006, had it happen quite a bit more frequently while others had it happen once or twice.<br /><br />Getting into the 30's on a few occasions is not going to help determine a cold winter or a cold month. Heck, even frequent cold shots like October 2006's didn't fully drive the bus on the following winter, which featured a very warm first six weeks before the bottom dropped out finally on temperatures in late January. That said, monthly temperatures in October normally <i>do matter</i> on the whole.<br /><br /><a href="http://philadelphiaweather.blogspot.com/2013/10/do-october-temperatures-matter-for.html" target="_blank">You may recall our post from a couple of weeks ago</a> about this -- the warmer the temperature (or colder) for Philadelphia, typically the stronger the correlation in the following winter towards warmer or colder temperatures on the whole. In fact, if temperatures fall into the warmer or colder thirds, the correlation runs at around a 70 percent clip for the following winter.<br /><br />Temperatures this October will slide into the warmer third of what we have seen since 1940 -- perhaps near top 15 warmest since records were first kept in the 1870's. The historic tendency is warmth in October more often than not yields warmth in winter (and the same with cold).<br /><br />That said, it can (and does) get chilly occasionally, even in warm months in October, but a few colder mornings themselves don't an October make...nor also provide a true indication of what's to come.

A few rain showers are possible with the highest chances for precipitation north of Philadelphia. A cold front is then expected to pass through late in the week. The GFS model is faster with the frontal passage when comparing it to the ECMWF model. At this moment, our best guess is that it may be an increasingly wet as Thursday Evening progress. We will watch this carefully as Halloween activities  will be taking place on Thursday Evening. The rain should extend into Friday before skies clear late in the day. However, if the slower solution turns out to be correct, Halloween would be drier with the majority of the rain on Friday and skies may not clear until sometime on Saturday. John Constantine and Swamp Thing #37 Set for Massive Popularity Boost

<div class="MsoNormal">Okay loyal comic book enthusiasts, what is going to be the next hot back issue to pick up in the coming years?  I know what you’re thinking, having a bit of foresight is actually akin to a super power.  However, for me one of the best investments right now is Saga of the Swamp Thing #37, which is the debut of (The) John Constantine.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Just like the sports card market, which is driven by demand (got to love the old supply and demand point counterpoints), the number of fans a character has directly impacts the value of their appearances.  The scarcer the comic, the more high priced (and hard to find) it becomes, think of it as a seller’s market.  Key issues of books can relate greatly to the first appearance of a character, New Mutants #87, Incredible Hulk #181, and Uncanny X-Men #266 are just a few examples, like Swamp Thing #37 that pop into my head.  (First appearances of Deadpool, Wolverine, and Gambit for those not following the logic.)<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/square_small/0/9116/2197875-37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/square_small/0/9116/2197875-37.jpg" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Image from <a href="http://www.comicvine.com/invunche/4005-74211/">Comic Vine</a></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">John Constantine is poised to gather a few more fans.  There is a Justice League Dark movie in the works, which according to Screen Rant might <a href="http://screenrant.com/justice-league-dark-heaven-sent-update-guillermo-del-toro/">make it to theaters before</a> the actual Justice League movie, and of course, NBC is working on debuting a <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/27/4777012/constantine-tv-series-is-being-developed-by-nbc">Constantine based television show</a>.  If done well, the result will be a few more fans of the old magic wielding chain smoking smart ass guy in a trench coat.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Hey the book is already pricey at the comic book store or on eBay, but you can find raw values anywhere from $20-$40.  Graded copies can get out of hand quickly, especially the high grades, because there just aren’t too many of these to go around.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">The short end is that putting $40 to $80 down on a character with a massive following already add in a television show and a movie (oh, I loved the Keanu Reeves “Constantine” BTW, not the same as Hellblazer, but he owned the character he was presented), and the sky could be the limit.<o:p></o:p></div>
