4th of july tease...

Happy Independence Day everyone!!!<br /><br />So, today I put on a top that was really tight around the arms before.  It was a hair snug, but WEARABLE!  It was not near as tight.  SOOO excited.<br /><br />I then, just out of curiosity, stepped on the scale at home.  Now, I think my scale is off (OVER) a hair form the scales at the doctors.  I won't tell you what my home scaled said, but let's just say, I think I am going to officially be labeled as a "responder".  What is a responder?  You have to lose around 12 to 15 pound in 12 weeks.  Remember, week 1 was 8 pounds.  I am 2 weeks in tomorrow and it looks promising....VERY VERY promising!  Holy Cheetos!  Wait, I need to come up with a healthy saying and can the Cheetos!  HOLY CELERY STICKS!!!!<br /><br />I have chosen to weigh in at my doctors office every 2 weeks.  Friday it won't happen because Karen won't be there and I am on VACA!  So, I will see about getting in Monday/Tuesday to do my weigh in.  Originally it was going to be Friday, but I can't wait.  I will then compare it to the scale I have at home so I can do it here!!!!!!!!<br /><br />ARE YOU READY?????????? Melatonin: A 'Magic' Sleeping Pill for Children? - WSJ.com

My son, who had always been a champion sleeper, was hit with insomnia the fall of his kindergarten year. A new school, a more rigorous academic schedule and the challenge of making new friends kept him up long after I had fallen asleep. He woke up exhausted and arrived home from school sullen and withdrawn. Over the next few months we tried everything to get him to sleep—no TV, warm baths, massage, warm milk.<br /><br><br /><br>Our pediatrician finally suggested that I give my son a melatonin supplement to help reset his sleep cycle. Try it for seven days, he said, but it may take longer. That night, with just 1 milligram of melatonin, my son fell asleep within 20 minutes—and woke up the next morning well rested, at last. It worked just as well the second night.<br /><br><br /><br>At bedtime the third night, he asked, "Mommy, can I have my magic pill to fall asleep?" I began to worry: Was I creating a drug-dependent child? Worse, could this experiment have long-term side effects?<br /><br><br /><br>Our bodies naturally produce melatonin, a hormone that is released primarily in darkness and helps to regulate our sleep and wake cycles. Insomniacs and jet-lagged fliers have used synthetic melatonin supplements as a sleep aid for years. Now there is a growing—and, to some doctors, worrisome—trend of using melatonin supplements to help restless children sleep.<br /><br><br /><br>Sales of melatonin have risen dramatically over the past five years, according to Nutrition Business Journal. Estimates for 2012 put sales at $260 million; in 2007, the market was just $90 million. Melatonin is available over the counter in the U.S., but in the U.K. and several European countries, the hormone supplement requires a doctor's prescription.<br /><br><br /><br>A handful of companies market melatonin directly for children's use, offering flavored, low-dose versions of the supplement. One melatonin manufacturer's website even urges parents to "prepare your child for academic success" by getting him or her to sleep. It cites one study that found "students with C's, D's and F's got about 25 fewer minutes of sleep and went to bed an average of 40 minutes later than A and B students."<br /><br><br /><br>Melatonin has been used in pediatrics for over 20 years. An article in the Annals of Neurology in 1991 reported that melatonin successfully corrected the sleep-wake cycle of a blind child with multiple disabilities. Since then, numerous studies, mostly short-term and involving special-needs children, have shown positive results. Doctors say the supplement can be critical in regulating the sleep patterns of children with neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, with few, if any, side effects.<br /><br><br /><br>Stressed-out parents are giving their kids melatonin to get to sleep, prompting doctors to issue warning over long-term effects. Photo: Amazon.<br /><br><br /><br>Judith Owens, director of sleep medicine at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, has studied melatonin and children. She said that the supplement appears to have a good safety record, not only with special needs children but with healthy children as well, when used for short periods with a pediatrician's oversight.<br /><br><br /><br>Still, some doctors say parents are misusing it. "I've never seen such widespread abuse of any drug or therapy in all my years of practice," said Stuart Ditchek, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. One mother told him that "she lines up her six healthy children nightly to give them their melatonin pill." Dr. Ditchek believes the supplement should only be used for the most serious sleep and neurological disorders. The concern, he said, is the lack of long-term clinical studies to see how the hormone supplement interacts with other hormones in the body, potentially affecting fertility or sexual development.<br /><br><br /><br>"Parents are using melatonin because they are stressed out," said Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and board-certified sleep specialist who knows parents that have given melatonin to their children for years at a stretch. "They come home late, eat dinner late, and they think they can just flick an on-off switch for their children to get to sleep."<br /><br><br /><br>Some parents have made candid online confessions about why they use the supplement. According to one father's review on Amazon, "OK, yes, as parents my wife and I should do a better job starting the bedtime routine earlier, turning off the TV earlier, limiting sweets, etc., etc. Well, for whatever reason, this is not our strong suit. This 1 mg light dosage of melatonin is very helpful winding our kids down and getting them ready for bed."<br /><br><br /><br>As soon as our own son started asking for the "magic" pill, my husband and I stopped giving it to him. Two years later, he still suffers from occasional insomnia. But whenever I get frustrated, I think back to what Dr. Ditchek told me. "For thousands of years our children have been falling asleep without the need for pills," he said. 2013 Nathans Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest Needs Kobayashi and Chestnut

<div class="MsoNormal">I know what you’re thinking:  Who cares about a hot dog eating competition?  Well on the Fourth of July, a small portion of the country will tune in to watch the <a href="http://www.nathansfamous.com/index.php/hot-dog-eating-contest">Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest</a>, which means a lot of folks care about the, err, sport.  However, this year the field will lack one of the competition’s most notable names, Takeru Kobayashi.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">According to The Post Game, Kobayashi is <a href="http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/chompions/201307/nathans-hot-dog-contest-goes-without-kobayashi">refusing to sign</a>with <a href="http://www.ifoce.com/index.php">Major League Eating</a>, the organization that runs the 4^th of July spectacular, because he is balking at a clause that gives the organization a portion of the competitors’ endorsement deals.  Sounds interesting huh?  Imagine Lebron James giving a cut of his Nike money to the NBA.  Of course, it’s not like Major League Eating has nearly a percentage of the revenues that the NBA does, so it is a necessary evil.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">The competition is a bit tarnished, because again Joey Chestnut, an eating legend in his own right, is expected to runaway with the 2013 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Contest crown.  For soccer aficionados, it is a bit like Manchester United taking on a US college team, because Chestnut is just simply that good.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Major League Eating and Kobayashi would be better off settling their differences and giving a little ground, because the sport does not get a whole lot of exposure as it is.  I mean how many kids do you know who want to grow up to be the champion of the <a href="http://www.ifoce.com/contests.php">The World Slugburger Eating Championship</a> presented by Main Street Corinth? <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">Basically, both parties are better off with each other than without, and if there was ever a time to give a little ground this is the time.  Just like many Olympic Events, this is a sport that millions of Americans care about once in a blue moon, and you want to have your best competitors in the field when ESPN2 is broadcasting the festivities.<o:p></o:p></div>

I used to have someone who required me to have beautiful lesson plans. They were detailed. I spent more than an hour a day on them. So much time so that sometimes I felt unprepared when the kids actually walked in the door. When those detailed plans were removed and I was allowed to focus on the content created for the students to use and then keep a grid (I keep links, etc. to what I'm doing) - THAT Was when real innovation happened in my classroom. Things like wikis, blogs, etc. happened after those super-restrictive requirements were taken off my shoulders. I had the wrong audience when I had those detailed lesson plans - my audience was the principal at the time. Now, I still have plans but I keep it in a grid in a book and then keep copies of what I use with students in dropbox and other places. I do far more now than then because my focus is the students. Lesson plans aren't bad. However, if you spend your time making the LESSON PLAN itself pretty and perfect then likely you're not spending your actual time PLANNING, printing, collecting, and creating what you'll be doing with your students. Also, when you do things like #geniushour and 20% time projects, you no longer have a lesson plan but a project plan which is an entirely different thing altogether. But pregnant women should be careful - a 10x increase in maternal PBDE's is associated with a 4 point IQ deficit. Of course, we also have the age old question here of causation or correlation.  I do think we need to know more and also if the equipment we're purchasing to use with young children has PBDEs in them.  If you know more, please leave comments. It does say that some manufacturers are voluntarily phasing these out. Seems we should all be done bellyaching about bloggers who have vanished but I'm not.<br /><br />I thought it was just a few.  It's not.  It's a whole lot.  <br /><br />Anyway if you're considering being done with this whole blog thing, or going private, or hiding your stuff from google searches, or if you perhaps already have hidden it... please reconsider those thoughts.  If it's anonymous and if you've got good stuff on there, please find a way to keep it there.  People like me who obsessively sat googling and eating up every bit of what you wrote.  Think about how much you helped that person who, like me, isn't out to hurt you.  Instead, you were helping them, and if they're like me, never had the guts to tell you sooner.  <br /><br />I completely understand why these blogs are gone.  Especially when you personally have to bear the attacks of ignorance and losers with too much time on their hands.  I'm not judging anyone who made the decision to do so.  I support your decisions to do what's best for you and your families.<br /><br />I had a bunch of things bookmarked that I wanted to go back and read again.  Things that touched me in some way or really good information or something.  Many of them were shut down completely or had gone private. So there was one particular thing I was looking for, something I felt was really important to me today, something I hadn't looked at in months... and it's gone.  Big ol' lump in my throat.<br /><br />If you're still here, I thank you.  Y'all mean a lot to me.  I've learned and you've made me laugh.  Keep going!
