She's alive!

I'm still here and doing well. Or as well as one could expect for someone like me, which so many issues.<br /><br />It was eight weeks ago today that I had a total abdominal hysterectomy, and seven weeks since I was told I had a very rare and aggressive form of cancer, uterine leiomyosarcoma, Stage IB. There isn't any chemo or radiation for this type of cancer. At Stage I since it usually doesn't respond well to either one. The treatment is just "wait and see". Even after surgery to remove the sarcoma, it will often metastasize into the lungs or liver within six to seventeen months 50% chance, maybe 40% if I look on the bright side.<br /><br />It's been less than 48 hours since my second surgery to remove my remaining ovary. It was a laparscopic surgery and was suppose to take an hour. It took two hours and then seven hours in recovery because I was throwing up and in an incredible amount of pain. I found out later from my surgeon that she had a lot of trouble finding my remaining ovary. The scar tissue from my recent hysterectomy had wrapped around it so there was a lot of cutting away of tissue, which has resulted in a lot of pain.<br /><br />I have five incisions in my abdomen, which indicates it was robotic laparscopic surgery. My surgeon specializes in robotics (although I forgot to ask her if she used robotics). I'd never heard of five incisions for laparscopic, I thought it was always three or four maximum. Not true for robotics, it's always five, and each of mine are an inch long. I also have an unusual amount of bruising at each incision site. Add in my six-inch vertical incision from my hysterectomy and my abdomen looks like it's been through hell. <br /><br />I still feel very tired and sore. Extreme pain when getting out of or into bed or the recliner. Since this was a difficult surgery and involved a lot more cutting than expected, my surgeon suggested I stay on medical leave for two weeks, until June 17. The way I feel right now, I completely agree with her.<br /><br />The most upsetting thing about the surgery was when I weighed myself yesterday. I had gained 14 pounds overnight! I was 197 the morning of the surgery and I was 211 the day after the surgery (on my home scales). I read online that this happens due to the gas and fluid retention, but 14 pounds overnight is pretty tough to take. I didn't weigh yesterday, but I'm really watching what I eat. My latest weight loss tool is MyFitnessPal app on my phone. I know tracking my food is extremely important. <br /><br />I quit Weight Watchers. Since my favorite leader left, it's just not the same. I might go back some day, especially if I don't start losing weight soon. I've read that it can take up to two weeks to lose the water weight from laparscopic surgery.<br /><br />The criminal trial for with my husband is suppose to happen this coming Tuesday, but I suspect it's going to be "continued" (delayed). At least that's what the prosecutor's office told me. I guess I'll find out next week, although I'd really like to get it over.  <br /><br />Not much else going on in my life. Actually, there is something going on that I'm dying to post about, but it's probably best that I wait awhile. I mentioned it a couple of months ago, then I pulled the post. If you read that post, then that thing I talked about is going really well. :)<br /><br />I rejoined the gym 2 1/2 weeks ago, and went five days each week. Of course now I've had a major setback in my exercise routine. For the next couple of weeks all I'm allowed to do is walk.

How many will continue to remember this major milestone battle of World War II that played such a big part in the freedom we enjoy? How many will keep the observance alive even as the Greatest Generation dies off and the memories fade?<br /><br />One family's wordsmith kept the memory of sacrifice and loss alive after penning a Memorial Day column some years ago. Lee Wolverton, then publisher and editor of the <i><a href="http://www2.newsvirginian.com/news/2011/may/30/editorial-spirit-endures-ar-1071549/?referer=None&shorturl=http://bit.ly/m2vazG">Waynesboro News-Virginian</a>,</i> remembered his grandfather who had given the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day when he parachuted in over enemy territory. It is a remembrance that has become a <i>NV</i> tradition each Memorial Day, and it seemed particularly fitting today since the actual event took place on D-Day.<br /><blockquote>In the wee-hour darkness, the stocky young colonel stood on an earthen mound, gazing into the faces of the 750 warriors before him.<br /><br /> “Men,” he said, “I am not a religious man, and I don’t know your feelings in this matter, but I am going to ask you to pray with me for the success of the mission before us. And while we pray, let us get on our knees and not look down, but up with faces raised to the sky.”<br /><br />In the orchard outside Exeter, England, rifles clanked against helmets as the soldiers descended to their knees in the dew-dampened grass. “God almighty, in a few short hours we will be in battle with the enemy. We do not join battle afraid. We do not ask favors or indulgence but ask that if you will, use us as your instrument for right and an aid in returning peace to the world.<br /><br />“We do not know or seek what our fate will be. We ask only this, that if die we must, that we die as men would die, without complaining, without pleading, safe in the feeling that we have done our best for what we believed was right.<br /><br />“Oh, Lord, protect our loved ones and be near us in the fire ahead and with us now as we each pray to you.”<br /><br />The paratroopers then clambered aboard C-47 airplanes for the flight to their drop zone: Normandy, June 6, 1944.<br /><br />For the colonel, it was the fulfillment of a dream born during his days as a boy picking apples in mountain orchards outside his native Elkins, W.Va. After graduation from West Point, with war looming, he was assigned a battalion in the elite 101st Airborne Division in preparation for the largest invasion in military history.<br /><br />The moment for which he longed ended instantly. He was hit in the chest by a series of machine gun rounds as he descended from the heavens into a sea of German artillery fire. By the end of the fighting in Normandy, almost 100 of his men had joined him among the war dead.<br /><br />Widely scattered but well-trained, the survivors soldiered on, seizing a pair of bridges over the Douve River and cutting off routes for German reinforcements at Utah Beach. The colonel’s troops later fought in Operation Market Garden in Holland and the pivotal Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne.<br /><br />Memories of 3rd Battalion commander Lt. Col. Robert Lee Wolverton remained vivid more than six decades after the invasion. The colonel and those who perished with him in Normandy embodied not only the sacrifice we honor today, but also a uniquely American spirit that transcends eras and debates over the merits of war. It is a spirit that lives in those who have given all and those who risk it in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Pray it endures forever.</blockquote>Nowhere did Normandy hit home more than in Bedford, Virginia, where the <a href="http://www.dday.org/">National D-Day Memorial</a> is located as a reminder of a small town that <a href="http://www.dday.org/index.php?page=whybedford">sacrificed so much for America</a>:<br /><blockquote>Like eleven other Virginia communities, Bedford provided a company of soldiers (Company A) to the 29th Infantry Division when the National Guard's 116th Infantry Regiment was activated on 3 February 1941.<br /><br />Some thirty Bedford soldiers were still in that company on D-Day; several more from Bedford were in other D-Day companies, including one who, two years earlier, had been reassigned from the 116th Infantry to the First Infantry Division. Thus he had already landed in both Northern Africa and Sicily before coming ashore on D-Day at Omaha Beach with the Big Red One.<br /><br />Company A of the 116th Infantry assaulted Omaha Beach as part of the First Division's Task Force O. By day's end, nineteen of the company's Bedford soldiers were dead. Two more Bedford soldiers died later in the Normandy campaign, as did yet another two assigned to other 116th Infantry companies. Bedford's population in 1944 was about 3,200.<br /><br />Proportionally this community suffered the nation's severest D-Day losses. Recognizing Bedford as emblematic of all communities, large and small, whose citizen-soldiers served on D-Day, Congress warranted the establishment of the National D-Day Memorial here.</blockquote>Sadly, Bob Slaughter, 87, a D-Day veteran and one of the driving forces behind the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, <a href="http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/309466">passed away in 2012 in Roanoke</a>.  The <i>Roanoke Times</i> wrote:<br /><blockquote>On D-Day, the June 6, 1944, invasion of Nazi-controlled Normandy, John Robert “Bob” Slaughter of Roanoke waded ashore toward the death and chaos of Omaha Beach as a sergeant and squad leader in Company D, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He was 19 years old. At 6-feet, 5-inches tall he presented a large target.<br /><br />The memories of that history-changing day during World War II and of the months of fierce combat that followed in France and Germany compelled Slaughter decades later to fight for and help win a memorial for the D-Day veterans who turned the tide of war against Germany.</blockquote>It was said after D-Day that we would never forget. Will future generations remember that promise?

Hear the crickets?

<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Hear 'em?  Yeah, me too. I sure don't hear anything else!<br /><br />Nothing new, nothing different, no response at all to the letter asking for DD.  I wrote that I wanted him to take his time and research.  I suggested he try to reach out to others by email if he felt it would help him understand.<br /><br />I have confirmation that it was read, though no questions or discussion yet.  No freaking out or extreme distancing from me.  Literally, we're just exactly the same.  Frustrating, yes, but reassuring that he's not totally dismissed it nor has he gone crazy from my request.<br /><br />That being said, he's got a massive project with work that's leaving him with insanely long work days that resume again after kids are off to bed.  It was our daughter's birthday so we had the build up to that... followed by the new buildup to her party this weekend.  And I'm sick.  I've had a snotty nose and been hovering around 101.5 <u>with</u> ibuprofen for a few days.  (no I haven't been to a doctor but the sickos around me have been, it's just a virus and if I'm not better yet I'll go on Friday) And we all know mommies aren't allowed to have sick days.  <br /><br />So it's bad timing on my part and I don't expect him to add me to his heap of responsibilities right now.  Yes, I wrote to him about ways that this will help him personally as well as our family as a whole.  About how I think he'll have more time on his hands if I got myself together.  But face it, it's a chore at least in the beginning until we both get some practice. <br /><br />I'm trying hard to continue my efforts to defer to his wishes.  There's been a couple of things since the letter - very minor - where he's told me what to do.  I feel the polite little argument welling in my throat but I won't let it out.  These things were stupid little things, things that either of our ideas were right for.  So I've followed his ideas.  I want him to see that I will accept any leading that he offers me.<br /><br />A striking and completely unexpected thing has happened though. My anxiety is way better.  I guess I have been so utterly terrified of his reaction that I couldn't really function.  On a scale of 1-10, my anxiety level was about 3,000.  Now, I'm basically fine.  That's how my anxiety works though.  I get so hung up on something, a thing that I usually have no idea what it is, and that underlying anxiety makes me incapable of dealing with even the slightest perceived snub or situation without a panic attack.  So it will come back.  But for now, I'm okay and really quite content...well, as content as I'm able to be!<br /><br />So he had no reaction... I don't know what that means and I'm guessing he doesn't know either.  The worst for me is over.  I don't know if DD is going to happen or not.  I do see both of evolving into more of a 51% - 49% type thing in time.<br /><br />The root of this whole journey for me has been for me to recognize what I'm doing wrong and to transition to one leader in the house.  It's been about me realizing how toxic I was/am.  I've gone from blaming him for everything and now see what I did to cause/contribute to the situation.  Seeing where my behavior has been the cause of tension, basically recognizing fault where it's due.  Learning to feel comfortable expressing when I feel hurt or overwhelmed.  I'm struggling with letting go of my ways and I feel like punishment is probably a better means to an end.  Currently there is absolutely no action I do wrong that has any consequence, aside from something illegal or dangerous.  I know what needs to be worked on and I'm stuck at a point of either I can't or I won't fix it on my own.  But still, I'm a grown-up and I am in control of my behavior.  And with or without DD, ultimately it's up to me to learn to be the person I want to be.

Oh No! I Can't Drink Starbucks and Be Right With God!

<div style="text-align: left;">I do understand that my failure to tithe has put me under a curse. I can accept that. I've been living "cursed" for quite some time, and it has been working out fairly well. Probably because it is a meaningless curse put on me by religious men and not God - but that is just speculation on my part.</div><br />But now David Barton comes along, and now there is a new curse I have to worry about. I remember the same baloney back in the 1990s at our church when the SBC recommended church members to boycott Disney after Disney decided to grant health benefits to employees' homosexual partners. You were the super-spiritual ones if you stopped taking your kids to Disney - if you did go to Disney or showed your kid <i>The Little Mermaid</i>, well, God was going to get you.<br /><br />I enjoy Starbucks. I buy cups of it brewed in their stores. I buy their beans at Publix and grind them at my house. I even bought a 12-pack of Keurig Starbuck packs for my Mr. Coffee Keurig machine. <br /><br />And I will continue to do so.<br /><br />No wonder evangelical Christians are laughed at and not taken seriously. The Holy Men of God say if we buy Starbucks, we're attacking God. If we criticize the pastor, we're attacking God.
