The first position includes Monday hours until 8:00 pm; the second position includes Wednesday and Thursday hours until 6:00 pm; both positions include two Sundays/month (10am – 2pm). A New Workflow for Me: Ipad, Keyboard, iPhone

This morning, I couldn't find my PC for a bit, but I wasn't really worried because I have a new workflow. Oh, but I sat down to work the "new way" (See the picture below) and I saw my PC underneath a book on the end table by the couch where I'd left it four days a go. This keyboard makes my iPad feel like a PC. I don't use the mouse because I use my fingers and the screen rotates either way for those apps like <a href="http://www.vickidavis.me/">Tumblr </a>and <a href="http://www.bufferapp.com/">Buffer </a>that don't have a good version for the iPad that swaps from portrait to landscape.<br /><br />The form factor of my computing has changed. Meanwhile, I am ready to interact with my TV, and, as I mentioned on my blog last week, the best interface for doing that is the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.xbox.com/kinect/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Kinect">Kinect</a> Operating system on my son's Xbox 360. <br /><br /><h3>1 hour later...</h3>Finally, I had to just force my PC to shut down because there was nothing I could do-- it looks like it was updating another Windows Update. Even though I keep my computer updated, when one of those comes down the pipe, I can pretty much interrupt what I'm doing. The way I update my iPad just makes so much more sense - I see the note that it wants an update, and I do it when there is time.<br /><br />I write this blog post in the flow of working to make a point that my workflow has changed dramatically. Now, if I have something I HAVE to do on a PC, I tend to use <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.splashtop.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Splashtop">Splashtop</a> streamer to remote into the PC and do whatever I have to do. I've been pondering getting a Mac and may still do it at some point, but at least 85% of what I want to do can be done right here on my ipad. The form factor of this keyboard makes it so much like a regular keyboard that the pesky typos that happen when I type on the ipad screen are not as frequent. <br /><br /><h3>Traveling is more productive</h3>Yesterday, coming home in the car from church, I turned on my iPhone's hot spot, connected my ipad, and used the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.powerschool.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="PowerSchool">PowerTeacher</a> app to update grades and respond to emails. <br /><br /><h3>The keyboard makes the difference.</h3>I think it is a combination of having an iPhone, iPad, and a drop dead incredible keyboard that makes this work for me. (As well as some awesome apps.) I can't stress enough the keyboard part. This is my third keyboard. The first keyboard was too small for my hands and had the apostrophe in the wrong place, the second keyboard wasn't firm enough to have in my lap.<br /><br /><h3>2 days later...</h3>Update. I finished this post on my PC in the office because the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.zemanta.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Zemanta">Zemanta</a> plug in I use is just too easy and too powerful. I draft most of my posts now on my ipad and then polish up here in a few minutes.<br /><br />Now, you have a post and a glimpse into the workflow of a fellow blogger. What Gratitude May Come

On Fridays we have "fun" in my eighth grade keyboarding class which right now means that I'm introducing them to the future of technology and giving some thought provoking predictions along with videos for the next few years. We were talking about <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/23/technology/google-glasses-will-be-powered-by-android.html" target="_blank">Google glasses</a> and <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Augmented reality">augmented reality</a>.<br /><br />I had forgotten that the seniors were over to the side working on their term papers, when one spoke up and said,<br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"Mrs. Vicki, I made a film two years a go about Google glasses, I predicted them."</blockquote><br />And rightly so, he did.<br /><br /><object height="315" width="420"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rr8LIJOnk2Q?version=3&hl=en_US"> </param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> </param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> </param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rr8LIJOnk2Q?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object><br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr8LIJOnk2Q" target="_blank">This video</a> was created for the <a href="http://netgened2010.flatclassroomproject.org/" target="_blank">NetGenEd project</a> two years a go.<br /><br />He worked very hard to predict what augmented reality would look like and I'm shocked to see how close I think he came.<br /><br />This fits with an email that I received just last night from a student I taught five years a go.<br /><br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">As a Telecommunications major at ******* many of my courses overlap the many lessons I once had in your class. In my Media and Technology class we examine emerging trends and future developments in the technological side of communications.I laugh to think of these as emerging trends when they include such things as the power of blogs, wikis, and other features of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Web 2.0">Web 2.0</a> that you taught to me nearly 5 years ago. So firstly, thank you for truly functioning on the cutting edge... Please stay ahead of the curve. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Additionally, in my Media Production class, my professor asked who was adept at using Excel. I was shocked when only myself and another raised our hands. He looked at us, unimpressed, and said you two will get internships. It's funny to see how many people have never used excel and how important it is, when, to a student at Westwood, these skills were standard and even trivialized in the back of my mind by how often and thoroughly we used them.  </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">I just wanted to thank you. It's hard for a high school kid to appreciate the gravity of what you teach.... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">I hope your students take this to heart much more than I did at their age because if they do, they too will be lightyears ahead of the curve.</blockquote><br /><br />What this student didn't know is that just yesterday after school I was asking myself hard questions. Things like:<br /><br /><ul><li>Am I pushing kids too hard? </li><li>Is it worth all the headache and struggle to sometimes do this sort of thing?</li><li>Does it really matter at all?</li></ul><div>We all ask these questions. We wonder why we teach or if we should teach at all.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you've heard me speak, one thing I always say is that<br /><br /><b>it is not whether a child thanks you today - if you're an excellent teacher, usually, they won't. </b><br /><b><br /></b><br /><b>It is whether they thank you in five years when they are in college.</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Those words came back to me like the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_of_Christmas_Past" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Ghost of Christmas Past">Ghost of Christmas past</a> came to Scrooge to convince me that it is worth pushing and doing and struggling. It is worth it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Teaching is a noble calling. I don't want to leave the classroom or my school or do anything else.<br /><br />Doubts  are just that. Doubts. Emotions can deceive me. It doesn't help that I was Friday afternoon tired by Wednesday afternoon of this week.<br /><br />I have to forgo the thank you today knowing that it will come one day if I do my job, work hard, and be a visionary for my students who can't really see past their own hormones right now.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can do this, friends. Be a teacher. It is a noble calling. Anyone who works with students who are often ungrateful, unappreciative and don't want to do anything... hold your standard high and work hard. They WILL thank you one day.</div><br /><i>This was written during the school year in May but I was so busy, I didn't have time to proof it. I used to be a fan of Restoration Hardware. For a long time, I had a hookup to 'Resto' and enjoyed a healthy discount. And believe me, I used it. You know, the fabric they use on Project Runway as their template...before they sew on the real fabric.<br /><br />I think this came from a dare at Restoration Hardware headquarters. At happy hour one night and they started playing the 'would people buy it' game. Crazy Herb from accounting said, "just take our existing chairs and pull the fabric off." Oh Herb!<br /><br />Save yourself $1600. If you are interested in a chair like this, I'll be happy to pull something off the side of the road for you and just rip the upholstery off.<br /><br />What do you think? Are you picking up what Restoration is throwing down? And don't let my subtle opinion influence you in any way. :)

I wanted to share this post anyway.</i><br /><br /><h3> My love affair with computers started when I was 7 in the 70's.</h3>In the 1970's when Star Wars was being released, my Dad had me using his <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-80" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="TRS-80">Radio Shack TRS-80</a> and I fell in love with computers. By the time the computer revolution began and people started using the word "nerd" I was already one. In my tiny town of 4,000 or so, at first it bothered me, but then, I realized it was my future. Little did I know how true this would be.<br /><br />I went to Georgia Tech in the 80's because of their role in computing and fully embraced being called a "nerd" which soon turned into the word "geek." First I was in the mobile phone business in the early 90's and my geekiness meant money in my slim wallet. But now, I'm moved into one of the greatest professions on the planet: teaching. My geekiness can literally improve lives.<br /><br />Through teaching <a href="http://westwood.wikispaces.com/" target="_blank">wikis</a>, I met <a href="http://123elearning.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Julie Lindsay</a> in Bangladesh through the K12 Online conference in 2006, and we became the best of friends co-creating the <a href="http://www.flatclassroomproject.org/" target="_blank">Flat Classroom projects</a>. Before we even met, we had won the ISTE Online Learning Award for the best collaborative educational project in the world. Geekiness had again improved my life and the children I teach.<br /><br /><h3> Today</h3>Now, Julie and I both teach full time but have created networks of teachers who help students connect with each other from Kindergarten, college, and beyond - thousands of kids each semester turn to each other to learn about culture. <b>Students are the greatest textbook every written for each other. </b>Geekiness has opened the book for powerful online learning experiences between students on whom we will depend upon for the future success of our world. Their ability to work together online with integrity, discipline, and respect is a hinge upon which our future will swing.<br /><br />We've coordinated and held conferences in Doha, Qatar, Mumbai, India and Beijing China and in the next 12 months will host a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://vflatclassroom.ideationnation.net/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Flat Classroom conference">Flat Classroom conference</a> in Germany and Japan. Being a Plus Size Bride - Part 2

I have to be really honest here. <br /><br />When it comes to weight loss, I am not a person who is motivated by pressure, at all.  I've always admired those people who can have total self control when it comes to reaching a goal by a certain period of time - whether that be for a class reunion, wedding, birthday, whatever.  They can decline offers of alcoholic beverages, desserts, appetizers - you name it - all without blinking an eye it seems.  "I'm sorry, I can't have that - I'm watching my weight for 'X'."  My problem? I cannot say that two letter word: <b>no</b>.  <br /><br />I can remember being in various friends' weddings over the years and vowing to lose x-number of pounds by their wedding and I failed...every. single. time.  Of course, I've done this to myself many times over the years, not just with weddings.  Surely someone can relate to this madness!<br /><br />Now, I'm not here to make excuses for my failures, I'm just trying/learning to recognize what works/doesn't work for me on this weight loss journey.  Case in point - my own wedding!  You would think that your own wedding would be enough motivation to "once and for all" remove the weight.  Sadly, no.  <i>Very</i> sadly, no.<br /><br />I tend to have a self sabotage approach when things aren't going my way in terms of weight loss.  It is almost as though I don't want to let myself be successful.  I will completely lose all eating inhibitions and just do what I want when the pressure is on, instead of really cutting back and being extra picky about what I put into my mouth.  In some ways, it's an all or nothing mentality.  If I cannot do it right 100% of the time,why do it at all.   "It" here is staying within my DPT and WPA.  While pressure motivates others to focus on their goal and have total self control, pressure for me causes me to unwind and act like I don't care.  Anyone else feel this way?  <br /><br />I remember before we got engaged, I told Joel that I'd hoped to be at or near goal before he popped the question so that I wouldn't have to deal with the pressure of losing weight during an engagement.  I knew this would happen!  Last year around this time I was getting into the zone with weight loss, and feeling good about taking a "slow and steady" approach to it.  Slow and steady = no pressure.  I was starting to realize that I didn't need to compare my journey to everyone else's - i.e. running races, lifting weights, doing whatever "everyone else" seemed to be doing.  No!   This is my journey and I was going to proceed how I wanted to, not how "everyone else" was doing it. Repeating a rendition of that mantra over and over really helped me stay focused.  <br /><br />Do I want to be 233 when I'm 30 years old? No.  But I have PLENTY of time to meet goal between now and then.  Honestly, while I'm not wishing the wedding away, I'll be happy to get back to a sense of normalcy where I won't feel so much pressure about fitting into a wedding dress as well as how I might <i>look </i>in my dress.  You could argue that once the "guilt pressure" goes away, I might lose all inhibitions and regain the 30 lbs I lost.  I don't believe this will happen though.  I'm proud that I've managed to maintain that 30 lbs loss, but I still have a long road ahead of me!  Right now my goal is simple and small - to lose another 30 lbs by March 4 of next year.  That means I only need to lose 3.3 lbs per month between now and then.  Definitely doable as long as I remain focused.<br /><br />I cannot wait to marry Joel this Saturday, plus size bride or not. <br /> I'm just looking forward to getting back to the "slow and steady" mentality.

IMPROVED METABOLIC RATES AND "STARVATION" ON THE HCG PROTOCOL

One of the most important life sustaining reactions to under-fueling or starvation is a decline in energy demand. This decrease comes from a decrease in thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). With the discovery of leptin in 1994, we more fully understand why this metabolic decrease occurs. Hypothalamic leptin levels are an integral part of why the thyroid supresses, and metabolism decreases during starvation.<br /><br />The link between leptin and starvation has been discussed for well over a decade. Initially scientists viewed leptin as a hormone designed to prevent obesity, but many studies suggest that leptin also signals the switch from a fed to the starved state, which would reduce fat use for fuel. As leptin levels decline, so does the metabolic signal from the brain as well as a decline in fueling from fat. <br /><br />What we understand today is that as eating decreases and the demand for fuel isn't adequately met, leptin levels also decrease, signaling to the brain that the body isn't fueling adequately.  This decline in leptin in the brain suppresses Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH is the neuropeptide that controls the release of Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH), which in turn acts on receptors in the thryoid to promote the synthesis and release of T4 and T3. Ultimately, this response tells the body to conserve energy, which would reduce overall need for fuel in an attempt to balance the body's metabolic mechanisms when lacking food.<br /><br />In an attempt to solidify that this metabolic turn-down in response is regulated by leptin, researchers studied the thyroid reponse to starvation, with and without leptin administration. This means that scientists put mice into starvation and gave some mice leptin and others a placebo (water). The mice with leptin administraion didn't have the same starvation induced drop in thyroid hormones like the placebo group. This research indicates leptin as an important influence on the throid during starvation.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.jci.org/articles/view/9725">Here is a link to an easier to read article about this leptin/thyroid/starvation link.</a><br /><br />In searching for answers to why low dose hCG could possibly prevent symptoms of starvation during Dr. Simeons' 500 kcal protocol, I knew that prevention in the starvation response from the thyroid would have to be necessary.  As science would suggest, eating less than 500 kcal in food for over a month would most likely show significant changes in the thyoid that would indicate reduced leptin levels, then decreased TRH, TSH, and ultimatlye reduced T4 and T3. This would negatively impact overall metabolism. However, the data I've collected shows the opposite: metabolic rates significatly increase after the 500 kcal protocol with low dose hCG administration.<br /><br />The next important piece in sustaining life during starvation is maintaining energy balance through adjustments in fueling mechanisms. In other words, where does the body create it's fuel: muscle, fat, glycogen, or blood glucose? In order for symptoms of starvation to be prevented the body would most definitely have to create fuel out of body storage, but in order to prevent muscle loss, there would have to be adequate fuel supplied by stored body fat. Science has shown one of the most important regulators of fuel release from fat is leptin. Leptin regulates the most importand fat combusting , AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) and more. Could this science explain why most people experience improved resting metabolic rates after eating less than 500 kcals for over a month? Does the body adapt at the mitochondrial level?<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/101/7/2058.full">Here is a link to not easy to read science that describes how leptin (when in proper amounts) regulates fat use for fuel.</a><br /><br />If there was a way to keep leptin levels from falling as they do with starvation, could symptoms of starvation be prevented, not only in the brain but in the body? Could fat adequately fuel the body so that muscle and organ tissue could be preserved? That is a very important question, considering thousands and thousands of people are experimenting with starvation through the hCG protocol.<br /><br />One of the most important studies I've come accross describes how there could be a drug created that would prevent all metabolic symptoms of starvation. But, in my opinion, I don't think we need a drug when we have a simple hormone that could be used instead; HCG.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18356287">Here is a link to a minireview that literally describes experimentation with mice to show what our physiology is capable of.</a>  This study discusses the use of a fatty acid synthase ihibitor (similar to leptin). What if the control of leptin could be balanced by the stimulus of leptin through hCG, rather than a drug? Could the very low calorie protocol keep leptin controlled to prevent leptin-resistance?  This could make sense to explain why people aren't experiencing symptoms of starvation, and even better- improved metabolic rates.<br /><br />Until we have laboratory experimentation for why and if low dose hCG can prevent starvation, we are all left to just assume otherwise. For this reason, I have written a hypothesis that can be used to start a more intelligent and scientificially relevant discussion of why Dr. Simeons hCG protocol could work. Is it the hCG or is it hCG's link to leptin?
