Why? Because Oscar was a union member.<br /><br />Several days before his murder, Oscar’s union, <a href="http://www.sinaltrainal.org/" rel="nofollow">SINALTRAINAL</a>, had launched a hunger strike in front of a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9" rel="nofollow">Nestlé</a> factory where Oscar worked for more than 25 years. The company <a href="http://colombiareports.co/nestle-worker-union-activist-killed-receiving-threats-paramilitary-western-colombia/" rel="nofollow">withdrew from negotiations</a> several months ago and was trying to dump the union. Nestlé workers were demanding the company respect various agreements with the union.<br /><br />Any worker action, especially a strike, can be a deadly one in Colombia, the most dangerous country in the world to be a union member.<br /><br />The day before Oscar was killed, members of his union received death threats from paramilitaries. Amnesty International <a href="http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/AMR23/052/2013/en/a498ef80-0bb9-49ff-9c62-3eaa487f81b1/amr230522013en.html" rel="nofollow">reports</a>:</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">On 8 November, the paramilitary group Los Urabeños sent a death threat by SMS to the phones of José Onofre Esquivel Luna and Álvaro Varela Pérez, who are both leaders of the Bugalagrande branch of SINALTRAINAL and work for Nestlé. The death threat read: “Guerrilla fighters son-of-a-bitch you continue to mess with Nestlé [,] no more forgiveness [,] we will cut you up [,] death to all communists of SINALTRAINAL.”  </span></blockquote>This is what life is like for union members under the reign of a trade deal in a country that is notorious for anti-union violence.<br /><br />Armed corporate goons like Los Urabeños have been responsible for the murders of 11 other union members in Colombia this year alone. A <a href="http://democrats.edworkforce.house.gov/sites/democrats.edworkforce.house.gov/files/documents/Colombia%20trip%20report%20-%2010.29.13%20-%20formatted%20-%20FINAL.pdf" rel="nofollow">recent report</a> by US Reps. <a href="http://georgemiller.house.gov/" rel="nofollow">George Miller</a> and <a href="http://mcgovern.house.gov/">Jim McGovern</a> concluded that <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/10/trade-deal-didnt-end-antiunion-violence-in-Colombia.html">threats, assaults and disappearances are on the rise</a>. Last year 22 union members were murdered in Colombia. None of the murderers have been brought to justice.<br /><br />Since its inception in 1982, SINALTRAINAL alone has seen <a href="http://www.wola.org/publications/violence_threats_and_attacks_aim_to_undermine_sinaltrainal_for_defending_labor_rights" rel="nofollow">more than 20 of its members killed</a> by right-wing death squads. Among slain SINALTRAINAL members, 13 worked for Nestlé. The company has of course denied any connections to paramilitary violence.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9DR42BsM_N0ObVVotaxHpLrxknyAEk_fz7OmbcilLgffM5RiVKlS87x0q8e_eM_Bx2nYHAQJ9c1xFuTbptDDK08UNbHz3PlpEQibw8n6OCMjKjUt8qdeST364AZlDeJO606wNHH3ncr9z/s1600/colombia-union-blood.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9DR42BsM_N0ObVVotaxHpLrxknyAEk_fz7OmbcilLgffM5RiVKlS87x0q8e_eM_Bx2nYHAQJ9c1xFuTbptDDK08UNbHz3PlpEQibw8n6OCMjKjUt8qdeST364AZlDeJO606wNHH3ncr9z/s1600/colombia-union-blood.png" /></a>Oscar’s death is a tragic reminder of what can happen when governments enact trade deals to enrich corporations while providing no say or protections for workers – especially in a country like Colombia.</div><br />Yet that’s what is happening again with the <a href="http://www.teamster.org/teamster-magazine/2013-summer/main-stories/stop-tpp">Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)</a>, an anti-worker trade deal being negotiated behind closed doors by Pacific Rim countries. Among those countries is Vietnam, a country that is rife with labor abuses including sweatshop conditions, poverty wages and <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/vietnam-allows-forced-child-labor.html">child slavery</a>.<br /><br />If conditions in Colombia tell us anything, it’s that without public pressure the TPP will not only allow labor rights violations to continue in places like Vietnam, it will make them worse.<br /><br />Fortunately, members of Congress are waking up to the fact that trade deals that are not fully vetted hurt workers and the environment. More than 190 members of the House are on record <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/13/business/international/house-stalls-trade-pact-momentum.html?emc=edit_tnt_20131112&tntemail0=y&_r=3&" rel="nofollow">opposing fast-track authorization for the TPP</a>. That means they want a full debate on the entire agreement, not the quick up-or-down vote that has allowed bad deals like the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States%E2%80%93Colombia_Free_Trade_Agreement" rel="nofollow">US-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement</a> to be ratified.<br /><br />Jim Hoffa wrote in the <em><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/james-p-hoffa/lawmakers-increasingly-re_b_4270072.html" rel="nofollow">Huffington Post</a></em> this week:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Fast track is an attack on democracy. Americans have been kept out of the loop on how the TPP will affect their everyday lives. The last thing we need is for politicians to fast-track a Pacific trade deal through Congress that allows them to build in secret provisions that help their campaign contributors, but hurt working- and middle-class families. </blockquote>The death of union members like Oscar in Colombia is every reason for bringing the TPP into the light of day. In the meantime, workers need to hold governments accountable when they allow unionists to be assassinated with impunity. <br />I swear, The Feds could fuck up a wet dream.<br /><br />So they decided to make one of those "Liberator" 3D printed plastic guns to test and one of them blew up,literally.<br /><br />The look of surprise did not cross my face when I saw this.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/13/3d-guns-atf_n_4269303.html"> <b>Feds Printed Their Own 3D Gun And It Literally Blew Up In Their Faces </b></a><br /><br /><i>Update, the video embedded doesn't work anymore so you will have to follow the link to see it.</i><br /><br /><br /><blockquote>3D Guns ATF<br /><br />WASHINGTON -- Federal officials have determined that a 3D gun printed from blueprints available online qualifies as a deadly weapon and worry it could evade metal detectors at courthouses, schools and other public places.<br /><br />The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) produced its own version of the Liberator, a gun made of plastic that can be produced using a 3D printer and blueprints made available online earlier this year.<br /><br />"We downloaded files, we created firearms from those files, and we tested those firearms," Earl Griffith, chief of ATF's firearms technology branch, said in a briefing with reporters at ATF headquarters in Washington Wednesday.<br /><br />The design of the Liberator includes a block of metal that technically makes it legal under the Undetectable Firearms Act, which requires that a certain amount of metal be included in a weapon so it is detectable. But the metal plays no role in the weapon's function and could be easily removed.<br /><br />The ATF's testing showed that the weapon, while not quite as powerful as most guns, could penetrate several inches of soft flesh as well as a human skull. The Liberator can only fire one shot before it must be reloaded, but ATF officials said that's all a determined assassin needs.<br /><br />"The bottom line is, the penetration results demonstrated that the Liberator is a lethal weapon," Griffith said. "The .380 bullets fired from the Liberator penetrate sufficiently to reach vital organs and perforate the skull."<br /><br />Testing found that the type of material used in the 3D printing was critical to whether the weapon would function properly.<i>(NO Shit? My thought)</i> The ATF produced several versions of the weapon, some using plastic produced by the company Visijet and others using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic material. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti said on Thursday that doctors have told him he can no longer race because of injuries sustained in an IndyCar crash last month.</p><br /><p>Franchitti broke his spine and right ankle and suffered a concussion in the Oct. 6 crash at Houston. The crash occurred on the last lap when his car made contact with another car and went sailing into a fence.</p><br /><p>The 40-year-old Franchitti underwent two surgeries on his ankle and recently returned home to Scotland to recover.</p><br /><p>'One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing,' Franchitti said. 'They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long-term well-being. MLB owners approve expanded replay for 2014

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://www.trbimg.com/img-52853526/turbine/chi-white-sox-cubs-minor-leaguers-suspended-20-001/600" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>Major League Baseball owners unanimously approved funding for replay expansion and voted Thursday to move ahead with an extensive video system next season that would allow managers to challenge almost every umpire's call except balls and strikes.</p><br /><p>The owners plan to approve the exact rules in January following the completion of negotiations with the unions for umpires and players.</p><br /><p>Rob Manfred, MLB's chief operating officer, said present and former umpires likely would make the decisions on contested calls after reviewing video in New York.</p><br /><p>A manager will be given a maximum of two challenges per game and a successful challenge would not count against his limit. If a manager is out of challenges, umpires likely would be able to call for a review on their own.</p><br /><p>'The clubs are very excited about it,' commissioner Bud Selig said after the owners' quarterly meetings in Orlando.</p><br /><p>'My father always said life is a series of adjustments and I've made an adjustment,' Selig said at Thursday's press conference. 'There isn't one play or one instance that changed my mind. It has just happened over time. I know we're doing the right thing.'</p><br /><p>The original plan was for each manager to have one challenge in the first six innings of each game with two more available per team from the seventh inning until the end of the game. That was tweaked because now the system calls for two challenges per team, per game with no regulations on when the challenges are used.</p><br /><p>The challenges do not apply to plays that were already reviewable -- boundary plays, such as fair/foul calls on home runs or fan interference on home runs. Those will still be handled by the umpires as they were this past season.</p><br /></div>

California takes down 10 fake Obamacare websites

'My office will continue to investigate and shut down these kinds of sites.'</p><br /><p>The extent of fraud related to the Affordable Care Act is not yet clear. But Harris' spokesman, Nicholas Pacilio, said that attorneys general from several states have been participating in regular conference calls on the subject.</p><br /><p>In September, Better Business Bureaus nationwide warned that fraudulent telemarketers were calling consumers pretending to offer information about the Affordable Care Act in an effort to obtain personal information for identity theft.</p><br /><p>In the California case, the websites used names meant to evoke the state's own insurance exchange, such as 'Californiahealthbenefitexchange.com,' Harris said.</p><br /><p>Consumers who used internet search programs such as Google to find the Covered California site were presented with ads for the fake sites instead, some of them using the exchange's logo and using its name.</p><br /><p>But instead of directing users to the site of the state's insurance exchange, where they could purchase policies approved under the new law and possibly qualify for a federal subsidy, the ads took consumers to the websites of private insurance companies and brokers.</p><br /><p>Harris warned consumers who wish to sign up to go directly to the state's site, which is www.coveredca.com. Amazon releases Kinesis service, promising data analysis at your fingertips

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://cdn.itproportal.com/photos/live_twitter_analysis_-_kinesis_contentfullwidth.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Amazon has announced its newest service, Kinesis.</p><br /><p>The announcement came after a dramatic live demonstration during a keynote by chief technology officer and vice president of Amazon.com at the re:Invent conference in Las Vegas.</p><br /><p>Kinesis is 'a fully managed service for real-time processing of high-volume, streaming data,' and is available for limited preview today.</p><br /><p>According to Amazon, using its new Kinesis service, 'a customer can store and process terabytes of data an hour from hundreds of thousands of sources.'</p><br /><p>This makes it easier to 'write applications that take action on real-time data such as web site click-streams, marketing and financial transactions, social media feeds, logs and metering data and location-tracking events,' according to a statement by the web giant.</p><br /><img src="http://cdn.itproportal.com/photos/keynote_crowd_fullwidth.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Up until now, most big data processing has been done through batch-oriented approaches such as those used by Hadoop, or through database technologies such as data warehouses. But these have their problems.</p><br /><p>'To build applications that rely on this 'fast-moving' data, many companies have developed their own systems or stitched together open source tools,' Amazon said.</p><br /><p>'But these are often complex to build, difficult to operate, inelastic and hard to scale and can be unreliable or lose data.'</p><br /><p>Kinesis, the company claims, is a solution to these problems.</p><br /><p>According to Amazon, the service 'takes care of all the 'heavy-lifting' for developers, providing easy data ingestion and storage, high data durability and the ability to scale seamlessly from kilobytes to terabytes an hour,' and the online marketplace giant believes it can deliver this 'at a fraction of the cost and effort' of data warehouses.</p><br /><p>With just a few clicks, Amazon claims, 'customers can create a data 'stream' that reliably captures and stores data as it is submitted, making it available to applications, open source streaming tools, and data stores (e.g. Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB or Amazon Redshift).'</p><br /><p>Interested users can sign up for a limited preview from today.</p><br />Make sure to follow our real-time coverage of the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, for more breaking news, photos and analysis.</div>

He did not identify the shooter and said no other injuries were reported.</p> <p>In a statement, the hospital said, “The situation has been contained. The cloud-based technology keeps the Safari browser's passwords and credit card data in sync across all your Apple devices.</p><br /><p>Secondly, in Spotlight, the device's internal search engine, Apple has brought back the ability to search Google and Wikipedia from the results. The two services were removed when iOS 7 was first released in mid-September.</p><br /><p>The software update applies to the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and the two new smartphones, the iPhone 5c and 5s. It's also available for the iPad 2, the third and fourth generation iPads, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina Display. <p><cite class="byline vcard"><span class="provider org">Press Association</span> – </cite></p> <div class="yom-mod yom-art-content" id="mediaarticlebody"> <div class="bd"> <p class="first">Executives of mobile phone companies are meeting Whitehall officials to discuss consumer concerns about prices.</p> <p>The meeting came amid reports that Prime Minister David Cameron is planning to press communications companies for a better deal for consumers, as part of his effort to regain the initiative on cost-of-living issues from Labour following Ed Miliband’s promise of an energy price freeze.</p> <p>In September, the Government announced a review intended to improve the transparency of information presented to consumers about their phone bills and prevent nasty shocks from unexpected roaming charges when abroad.</p> <p>A spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said: ” Consumers frequently express anger about roaming charges and hidden price hikes when it comes to their mobile phone bills. We have a highly competitive telecoms industry and want to see these issues addressed.</p> <p>“These matters will be discussed today in a meeting between DCMS officials and industry officials.”</p> <p>Labour communications spokeswoman Helen Goodman said: “David Cameron has failed to get a hold of the cost-of-living crisis, and it is the public who are paying the price. This is as true in the area of telephone bills as elsewhere.</p> <p>“The Government is doing nothing to help people with mobile phone bill shock, nor to make clear what people are actually paying for bundled services. Why has it taken (Culture Secretary) Maria Miller so long to approach the mobile companies, and what action is she going to take to tackle the cost of living?</p> <p>“Households spend an average of £97.62 per month on telecoms services, including £32.21 on mobile bills and £10.78 on internet. Yet mobile companies are getting £150 million of taxpayers’ money for the Mobile Infrastructure Project, and BT is getting £1.2 billion in public money for their broadband programme.
