Whoa! Chicago Teamsters attacked by Texas corporation

Teamster funeral directors in Chicago are in tough contract talks with SCI, a Houston-based company that’s trying to force steep concessions. They may need your support in the very near future.<br /> <br /> Teamsters Local 727 has been negotiating a contract for its 59 funeral directors and drivers at 17 area SCI funeral homes since June 14. The current contract expires at 12 a.m., Monday, July 1, and talks will continue through June 30.<br /> <br /> Over the course of negotiations, SCI has approximately 50 regressive changes to the current contract including:<br /><ul><li>Eliminating the funeral directors’ pension plan</li><li>Increasing the cost of health insurance premiums for employees</li><li>Wage freezes for new hires</li><li>Paltry wage increases after years of wage freezes</li><li>Removal of contractual protections for disabled employees</li><li>Elimination of authority of arbitration decisions</li></ul>Elimination of holiday pay. John T. Private blogs and protocol

<br />I follow a lot of blogs, just a few follow mine.  Most of the blogs I read are not things that I can even begin to comment on, so I'm a lurker I guess you'd say.  I read them for many reasons - fascination, understanding, humor, good information, commiseration, validation of my own feelings, etc.  And with a few of you, actual friendship! <br /><br />I don't like seeing posts hidden.  I don't like seeing entire blogs disappear.  Yet I totally understand why you must do it. <br /><br />So I'm wondering...   Being new to blogland, I don't know what the protocol for this is.  Someone I'm closer to, someone I'm regularly engaging with, that would make sense for me to ask to be let in.  But what about somebody who doesn't know me from any other crazy nut of a reporter?<br /><br />I've been a fly on their wall, lurking around unnoticed, the door slammed shut (by necessity), and now this fly wants to get in.  But who in their right mind would open a door to a fly? Have the houses been leveled or are they under an invisibility cloak?  Is it appropriate for this fly to knock on the door?  And how do I find the door to knock on? <br /><br />I'm really sad it's come to this for so many of you.  This fly misses you already.

Back to work

Well my holiday is well and truly over, I'm back in work thus morning.  <div><br></div><div>I think if I get stressed I need to bring my mind back to yoga on the beach last Friday at 8am and how content I felt or I could think of how we sat in the Key West Airport Beach Bar on Saturday, waiting for the plane with a drink in hand & feet in the sand, already missing Key West.</div>

Sure enough, that's what happened today as reports of a bear began surfacing around the middle of the day. The photo above was taken on North Augusta Street across from the Mary Baldwin College campus where the bear was seen on campus making its way toward Statler Boulevard.<br /><br />I was talking with wildlife biologist and longtime friend Al Bourgeois from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as we sat at dinner last weekend at a wedding in western Augusta County. He is one of the resident bear experts who has dealt with bears in this area for years. He said it has been a very active season as the hungry critters are roaming looking for food and, since there is very little natural food just yet, some are making their way to populated areas sniffing out garbage, bird feeders, and other edible goodies.<br /><br />Bears are not unusual in this part of Virginia, and each year there are incidents with some years busier than others. Day 4 #Belviq - my meals today and I NEED EASY recipes!

More Virginians today have a place to call home, and that is great news for them and for our entire Commonwealth. However, despite this tremendous progress, we still have much work to do, and that’s why our efforts to further reduce homelessness across Virginia will only increase moving forward. Our work will not be done until all Virginians have a home.”</blockquote>The Governor's Monday press release: <br /><blockquote>Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that overall homelessness in the Commonwealth has declined 16 percent from 2010 to 2013 with a 17 percent decrease in family homelessness in the same period.  Of special note is the decrease in homeless veterans, where between 2012 and 2013 there was an 18 percent reduction in the number of veterans experiencing homelessness. The new numbers originate from annual point in time data collected by local Continuum of Care groups across Virginia in January each year and compiled by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. <br /><br />Early in his administration, Governor McDonnell issued Executive Order 10 creating a housing policy framework, including policies to more effectively address the issue of homelessness. The resulting <i>Homeless Outcomes Advisory Committee Report and Recommendations</i> set the goal of reducing overall homelessness by 15 percent by 2013. The successful reduction of homelessness can be largely attributed to the shift in focusing resources to rapid re-housing, moving people into permanent housing more quickly while providing appropriate services through community resources.<br /><br />Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd and Dr. Bill Hazel, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, spearheaded the Homeless Outcomes Advisory Committee, which identified five primary goals to reach the targeted reduction in homelessness.  The collaborative efforts of many at the state and local levels and working through private and public agencies and organizations, including the National Alliance to End Homelessness, have provided the structure for this successful effort.  <br /><br />The reductions in homelessness have resulted from shifting some state resources from traditional shelter services to rapid re-housing. Additional resources were provided in the FY2013 budget for rapid re-housing and permanent supportive housing with continued support in the FY 2014 budget.</blockquote>

Pope-backed group attempts to make joke out of N.C. protesters

The Moral Monday protests in North Carolina have already resulted in nearly 500 arrests, not including tonight's Statehouse rally. That's scores of real North Carolinians standing up against the gutting of education, health care and the environment and for fairness in the tax code. But for some, it's all just a game.<br /><br />The Civitas Institute, a state-focused stink-tank largely funded by state budget director Art Pope, decided it would be "fun" to create a <a href="http://www.nccivitas.org/moralmonday/">"Pick the Protester" game</a>. It lets the user choose among three mug shots of those arrested to answer a question. For instance, it asks, "who's from Raleigh" or "who is 73 years old" or "who is unemployed"? It attempts to make a joke out of those who are standing up for the middle class.<br /><br />If that's not your kind of humor, you also won't like the website's more insidious roster of arrestees which links their photo to information about each person's name, age, residence, race, occupation, employer and interest group memberships. It reeks of the some of the actions taken to tamp down on civil rights protests in the 1950s and 1960s.<br /><br />As stated by the <a href="http://www.southernstudies.org/2013/06/art-pope-funded-group-launches-database-targeting-.html">Institute of Southern Studies</a>: <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Civitas' database brings to mind another troubling episode of mid-20th century U.S. history: how in some Southern cities at that time the white-supremacist White Citizens' Councils (WCC) would publish in local newspapers the names of NAACP supporters and those who signed anti-segregation petitions in order to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Citizens%27_Council#Economic_retaliation_and_violence">encourage retaliation</a> against them. The WCCs, like Civitas, also had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Citizens%27_Council#Political_influence">close ties</a> to powerful government officials.</blockquote>Thankfully, the plan doesn't seem to be working. Organizers are expecting a huge turnout for tonight's rally, which is focused on labor and economic issues. Union members are expected to be out in force. We stand tall with those who are sticking up for working men and women.<br /><br /><br />
