The biggest concern most NFL fans who planned to attend Super Bowl XLVIII was possibly freezing while sitting outside in MetLife Stadium.
It is hard to fathom their biggest concern was would be trying to stay conscious and breathe in 100-degree temperatures while traveling to the game on Sunday.
Several people collapsed in an overcrowded and overheated New Jersey train station while waiting on long lines to get to the Super Bowl, according to the Associated Press.
The people who collapsed were treated by emergency medical workers at Secaucus Junction on Sunday afternoon after being packed into crowds that were reportedly at a standstill. Emergency workers had to push their way through the crowd to treat people affected by the crowd.
Officials had discouraged fans from driving to the game and the use of cabs or limousines was prohibited because of the security perimeter. The use of public transit was encouraged, but it quickly became apparent that transit stations were not equipped to process the crowds through all the security checkpoints.
Krysten Peek of Yahoo Sports was among the people wedged into that crowd. She reports the reason for the jam is the station could not handle the high amount of people. When the initial flood hit, there was no authority to organize the lines, so it turned into a free for all.
According to NJ.com, “Security officers at first were checking every bag, but by 2:45 p.m., more than three hours before the game, checkpoints were overwhelmed by the crowds and people they were pouring through with little or no examination of what was on their person or what they were carrying.”
