Selfie While Driving? Your Life is Worth More Than a Like

Usually there is an element of sarcasm in these posts, but today I know what you’re thinking:  Nobody is stupid enough to take a selfie while driving.  You would think so, but you would be wrong.  According to Yahoo, there are more than three million Instagram posts labeled #driving and even more with variations of the tag.  Apparently, to many folks their lives are worth a few likes.

While the dangers of texting while driving are pretty clear, according to Distraction.gov you are twice as likely to crash while texting, the selfie phenomenon is another battle.  Of course, your personal feelings of cell phone use while driving come into play as well, because like or not when you are doing something besides driving you are distracted.

For those that think they can handle texting while driving the simulator on It Can Wait is a nice teaching tool.  The selfie issue is just another form of the battle, and it is quite simple to answer:  it only takes a split second to change your life or someone else’s forever.  A car, truck, van or whatever can be turned into a weapon in that split second, and that great self portrait won’t look so great when you know it helped get a family killed.

Everyone, not just the kids and teens, needs to be aware that the technology we all love to use has a limitation, no matter how second nature firing off a text might or taking a picture might be, it is dangerous to use behind the wheel-plain and simple. 

Anyone that really wants to take a great selfie should include the tag #GotHereSafely, because those would be comments worth reading.  Again, life is worth more than a like, but you have to pay attention to realize that.
