Elderly veterans who came to Washington to visit the World War II Memorial knocked down the barriers to the closed monument and visited it anyway.

Reported the New York Daily News:
Confronted with fences and signs warning them the park was closed, the 90 or so grizzled heroes — most of them from Mississippi and Iowa — simply moved them out of the way and marched inside to pay their respects.
By the time park police realized what was happening, hundreds of vets — many of them in wheel chairs — were already inside and refusing to leave.
"We deserve better," said one veteran.

We sure do.
