It Is Too Soon for a Charmed Reboot

I know what you’re thinking, original ideas are scare in Hollywood.  With Batman, Superman, Star Wars, and a bevy of sequels hitting theaters every year, the quest for new material seems a little fruitless.  Hot on the news of the once beloved WB show “Charmed” getting a reboot, it seems that a few folks agree with me.

According to Yahoo! TV Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan, stars in the original show, have publicly via Twitter, come out to criticize the potential reboot of the series about three witches with the power to vanquish evil doers.  (Okay, that over-simplifies the show, but it’s a basic idea).

Sure you could argue that girls kicking butt could be traced back to “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” (Yes, Buffy was movie that inspired the television series first) or even Emma Peel way back in the original “The Avengers” in the 1960s, and that “Charmed” was just the next logical step.  However, the shows were unique premises, and not simply the same story redone in a different manner.

Still, it seems that many television shows are misses rather than hits.  However, retooling ideas can sometimes produce interesting results.  This year’s “Sleepy Hollow” takes cues from a really old Washington Irving tale, and “Castle” and “Bones” have a whole lot in common, but the departures and differences keep each show unique.

The point is, taking inspiration and creative liberties is one thing, and outright duplicating an idea is something else.  “Charmed” has only been off the air since 2006, and while seven or eight years is an eternity in the television landscape (seems like many shows are lucky to last three or four), the series is probably too fresh in the minds of fans (isn’t it still on somewhere in syndication?) to be recast, rebooted, and remade.

Why not give Joss Wedon a call and see if he has any new ideas for “Firefly” and leave the original cast out in the cold?  I’m sure nobody on the Internet would have a problem with that.  [sarcasm]  And that was what a decade ago??
