Instead, Krugman attacks Bitcoin’s economic fundamentals for the zillionth time.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph2" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">Almost any time you see someone from a university praising Bitcoin, that person is from the computer science department. And if you see someone from a university criticizing Bitcoin, that person is likely from the economics department. It’s understandable why technologists gravitate toward a math-based currency. But why don’t economists like Bitcoin?</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph3" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">It’s not that economists are Luddites, as Bitcoin fanatics might say, although no doubt there is an element of <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2011/07/paul_ford_facebook_and_the_epiphanator_an_end_to_endings.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;"><i>bedeutungslosigkeitschmach</i></a>. Rather, it’s because the odds are objectively against Bitcoin’s long-term success. It’s very difficult to start anything that depends on a lot of people using it, and the challenges proliferate when that thing is a whole entire new type of money. There are countless possible deaths of Bitcoin. The technology fails. Overspeculation causes an irrecoverable crash. The price never settles down. Deflationary pressure annihilates liquidity. A government shuts it down. A new currency makes it obsolete. Users abandon it for some other reason. And so on.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph4" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;"><q class="center" style="color: #fa4b2a; display: block; font-family: ff-din-web-condensed, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 38px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 38px; margin: 25px auto; padding: 5px; quotes: none; text-transform: uppercase; width: 500px;">OBJECTIVELY, THE ODDS ARE AGAINST BITCOIN’S LONG-TERM SUCCESS</q></div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph5" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">It’s difficult to predict what will happen to Bitcoin because it is unlike any currency ever created. You can draw parallels to monetary anomalies like e-Gold, <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/02/15/131934618/the-island-of-stone-money" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;">the stone coin statues of Yap</a>, or the Iraqi dinar, but there’s never been anything quite like it. Instead of a central authority, it is governed by a computer protocol. Instead of serving one country or group of countries, it serves the whole world. And because its source code is public, anyone can launch their own version of Bitcoin at any time.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph6" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">"It’s something economists had never had to think about until this was developed, and we're just beginning to think through all the implications of it," says Steve Horwitz, an economist at St. Lawrence University who studies private monetary systems. "There’s not a unanimous opinion for sure."</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph7" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">University of Berkeley economist Brad DeLong <a href="http://equitablegrowth.org/2013/12/28/1466/watching-bitcoin-dogecoin-etc" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;">believes</a> that Bitcoin will fail because the cost of producing a Bitcoin clone is zero. George Mason economist Tyler Cowen <a href="http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2013/12/how-and-why-bitcoin-will-plummet-in-price.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;">agrees</a>, and adds a warning about deflation. Krugman’s main concern of late is the predictability of Bitcoin’s value in the future.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph8" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">Bitcoin’s success has the potential to disrupt a lot of ideas about money. "To be successful, money must be both a medium of exchange and a reasonably stable store of value," Krugman writes. He isn’t convinced that Bitcoin is a good medium of exchange, but it’s the store of value question where Bitcoiners think very differently from economists. In Krugman’s mind, a currency that is a reliable store of value is traditionally either backed by a central authority willing to buy back the currency, the way the dollar is backed by the Treasury, or it has some intrinsic value, the way gold can be made into jewelry. If a currency has no central authority and no intrinsic value, people can’t trust that it will retain value over time.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph9" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;"><q class="right" style="color: #fa4b2a; display: block; float: right; font-family: ff-din-web-condensed, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 38px; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 38px; margin: 25px 0px 25px 25px; padding: 5px; quotes: none; text-transform: uppercase; width: 250px;">"IT’S SOMETHING ECONOMISTS HAD NEVER HAD TO THINK ABOUT UNTIL THIS WAS DEVELOPED."</q></div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph10" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">There is some evidence that human psychology may assume a store of value where an economist would say there is none, however. In 1993, Saddam Hussein<a href="http://people.ischool.berkeley.edu/~hal/people/hal/NYTimes/2004-01-15.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;">started printing his own currency</a>, the Saddam dinar, which citizens were told to exchange for their old 25-dinar notes. Citizens had little confidence in the dictator, who was printing Saddam dinars like crazy. They kept using their old dinars as a medium of exchange and believed it was a relatively stable store of value. Of course, they were wrong. The old dinar gained in value until one was worth 300 Saddam dinars. But in 2003, the US occupation government announced a new Iraqi dinar at an exchange rate that cut the old dinar’s value in half.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph11" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">If Bitcoin is successful, it could prove that money doesn’t need to function as a stable store of value — the price of Bitcoin could jump around constantly, and in the age of the internet it’s trivial to program prices of goods and services to fluctuate with it.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph12" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">Its success could also prove that use as a medium of exchange can be the basis for believing a currency is a store of value. If people believe that they will be able to buy things with Bitcoin and exchange it for other currencies indefinitely, that could convince them to use it as a store of value. Many early adopters have already put their savings into Bitcoin. And if the technology is sound and the user base is (eventually) global, that doesn’t seem that insane. That’s why technologists keep talking about Bitcoin as a means of exchange when Krugman asks them why it’s a stable store of value: if Bitcoin takes off as a global means of exchange, that could be enough to make it succeed. <em>The Economist</em><a href="http://www.economist.com/news/technology-quarterly/21590766-virtual-currency-it-mathematically-elegant-increasingly-popular-and-highly" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;">put it best</a>: "All currencies involve some measure of consensual hallucination, but Bitcoin... involves more than most."</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph13" style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;"><b>Correction:</b> An earlier version of this story said Steve Horwitz is a faculty member at George Mason University; that is incorrect. And thanks to the Hubble telescope, researchers believe they've found what lies in the planet's upper atmosphere: thick clouds. A paper, published in the<a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v505/n7481/full/nature12888.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">January 2nd issue of <i>Nature</i></a>, relies on the telescope to settle a debate about the planet's composition. First documented in 2009, GJ 1214b is one of several exoplanets that researchers are studying in hopes of finding a habitable world in another solar system. It's been previously described as a "<a href="http://www.space.com/14634-alien-planet-steamy-waterworld-gj1214b.html" style="color: #fb4834; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">steamy waterworld</a>," with a density too low to be purely rock and too high to be a gas giant. But despite years of study, researchers hadn't come to a conclusion about what kind of atmosphere enveloped it.</div><div class="pgh-paragraph" id="paragraph1" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px;">Footage from the Hubble telescope has been instrumental in figuring out anything about GJ 1214b. Its sensors measured light as the planet crossed in front of its star, using the differences in infrared and visible light to tease out what gases might be around it. Earlier studies pointed to two possible interpretations of this data: there could be a consistent atmosphere of water vapor or another heavy molecule, or high-altitude clouds could be enshrouding the planet and obscuring everything below. To clear up the question, researchers led by the University of Chicago's Laura Kreidberg and Jacob Bean used the Hubble to capture precise measurements of infrared light. "You would expect very different kinds of clouds to form than you would expect, say, on Earth," says Kreidberg. Understanding more about the atmosphere could change previous conclusions about the planet's makeup: its watery composition becomes harder to verify if it's largely blocked from view. For now, the group believes it's also important that the Hubble was capable of performing this research at all. "I think it's very exciting that we can use a telescope like Hubble that was never designed with this in mind, do these kinds of observations with such exquisite precision, and really nail down some property of a small planet orbiting a distant star," says Bean. That level of precision will hopefully be improved upon by the Hubble's successor, the James Webb Space Telescope set to be launched in 2018.</div></div>

In case you didn't know, I was a registered Democrat my whole life up until recently.<br />Even worse, I was a Liberal Democrat. <br /><br />However, and this is important, I always had a really strong independent streak, ie, Libertarian and couldn't for the life of me figure out why perfectly well educated people couldn't understand what the Constitution means without some kind of <i>interpretation</i>.<br /><br />You don't understand plain English? I sure as fuck do!<br /><br />I always knew that part of me was there but I kind of suppressed it for a long time.<br /><br />I also used to follow politics very closely and kept myself informed on what was being stuffed down our throats to the point I was virtually a Political Junky. I was basically making myself nucking futs .<br /><br />I was very vocal and opinionated too, still am to a point.I finally just couldn't stand it anymore and had to get away from politics all together.<br /><br />There came a point that I finally came to the realization after watching the system bounce back and forth for many years that there is virtually no difference in between the two major parties in this country when it comes down to fucking the little guy.<br /><br />That would be me and you.<br /><br />We are the meat in a Fuck You sandwich.<br /><br />Either party will sell your rights down the river in a heart beat for a donation.<br /><br />The reason I am going into this is because I pretty much abandoned the Democratic party a few years ago completely but never quite could make myself feel comfortable in the Republican camp either. The Democrats boiled this frog until I was livid but when I looked at assholes like Boehner, McConnel, Cheney and Grandpa Walnuts (McCain) I knew I just couldn't go there either.<br /><br />One party is stupid and evil, the other is professionally evil, in my opinion.<br />YMMV.<br /><br />My other blog was very politically oriented at times but when I let that shit go I decided to go with my gut and let my freak flag fly. I came out of the closet in a political sense.<br />Hence the views I impart here are more of a Libertarian/ Constitutionalist flavor.<br />Being very Pro 2nd Amendment always made me feel uncomfortable with the Democratic party anyway.<br /><br />Just for shits and grins, <a href="http://www.isidewith.com/">I stumbled on this little quiz</a> that will analyze what political party your answers most fit in with. There are more optional answers to the questions that they ask and I went through those on several questions, I suggest if you take the quiz that you look at those too.<br /><br />I would have to say that I most certainly got that Democrat shit out of my system pretty completely according to the results of that survey.<br />My answers fit the Libertarian parties viewpoint to the tune of <b>89%</b>. <i>That surprised me</i>.<br /><br />This is not to say I am going to run out and blindly vote for whatever Peckerhead runs for office on a Libertarian platform mind you.<br /><br />I am of the opinion that voting at all anymore just validates the continued UnConstitutional activities and decisions that we have been getting ass raped with for the past forty years.<br /><br />Besides that, the documented cases of outright vote fraud and manipulations makes the result of any election suspect, especially when those votes are cast on electronic voting machines,not to mention the old Dead Democrats that vote early and often trick.<br /><br />So please try not to hold my sketchy past against me. Syrian Electronic Army hackers also compromised Skype’s Facebook page and a company blog hosted at Skype’s website. Both have since been rectified, and it appears they're also related to account phishing rather than any wider security compromise of Skype's service.
