GCHQ problem protects Twitter users [ BeritaTerkini ]

<p><cite class="byline vcard"><span class="provider org">Press Association</span> – </cite></p> <div class="yom-mod yom-art-content" id="mediaarticlebody"> <div class="bd"> <p class="first">Twitter has used an “impossible” mathematical problem first discovered by GCHQ to protect its users from electronic snooping.</p> <p>The company said “perfect forward secrecy” (PFS) was now live on all its services, drastically increasing the effort required to intercept its traffic.</p> <p>It is understood the move is intended to make it more difficult for data to be collected on its users without going through legal channels.</p> <p>Jim Killock, director of the Open Rights Group (ORG), said it was a “policy move” driven by revelations about mass surveillance by British eavesdropping agency GCHQ and the American National Security Agency (NSA).</p> <p>He said: “Companies have now realised precisely how vulnerable their information is on the internet. It’s no longer a theoretical risk. We know it’s been going on now.</p> <p>“This is about asking users to trust the companies involved and to also force the legal authorities to approach companies directly rather than attempting to seize the data in transit.”</p> <p>In June it was revealed that GCHQ was using a project called Tempora to indiscriminately scoop data from fibre optic cables entering and leaving the UK.</p> <p>In standard encryption each side of a communication independently generates paired keys – a public key telling others how to encrypt the messages they send to it and a private one used to decode them when they arrive.</p> <p>The maths involved make it almost impossible to calculate the private key from the public one.</p> <p>But if an attacker acquires a company’s private key it can read anything sent to and from that company’s servers – even if it was recorded years earlier.</p> <p>PFS adds another stage where two machines collaborate on enormous sums to deduce a shared key which is never shared and never used again.</p> <p>That means an attacker would have to use a more complicated and resource-intensive “man-in-the-middle” strategy specifically targeted at a single communication while it was still going on.</p> <p>The so-called “Diffie-Hellman” method used by Twitter was first discovered by GCHQ analysts in the early 70s, but remained classified until it was independently patented by a pair of American cryptographers.</p> <p>A post on Twitter’s engineering blog explained: “If an adversary is currently recording all Twitter users’ encrypted traffic, and they later crack or steal Twitter’s private keys, they should not be able to use those keys to decrypt the recorded traffic.”</p> <p>It stressed that the move was simply “part of a continuing effort to keep our users’ information as secure as possible” and that PFS should become “the new normal.”</p> <p>Dr Ian Brown, an ORG trustee and associate director of Oxford University’s Cyber Security Centre, said PFS “effectively reinforces the rule of law about interception” and described the Diffie-Hellman problem as “effectively impossible.”</p> <p>He said: “In the States, the UK, and many other countries, there are laws that say governments can go to companies and request messages relating to individuals or subjects that they have a warrant for.</p> <p>“What this means is that is the only way those intelligence agencies can get access – rather than, as we now know they have been doing, recording everything.”</p> <p></p> </div> </div> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>

The vaccine does not have a trade name in the United States.</p> <p>It is the first H5N1 vaccine approved in the United States to contain an adjuvant, or booster, that turbo-charges the body’s immune response to the vaccine.</p> <p>“This vaccine could be used in the event that the H5N1 avian influenza virus develops the capability to spread efficiently from human to human, resulting in the rapid spread of disease across the globe,” Dr. Karen Midthun, director of the FDA’s biologics division, said in a statement.</p> <p>The FDA approved the vaccine for use in people over the age of 18 who are at increased risk of exposure to the virus. It would be distributed by public health officials if needed.</p> <p>The approval comes amid some uncertainty over the safety of modern adjuvants such as the one used in GSK’s bird flu vaccine.</p> <p>However, there are no truly effective traditional vaccines against bird flu. Glaxo’s super-charged product is the first to show it can confer protection in the event of a pandemic. European regulators have approved it under the brand name Pumarix.</p> <p>Data shows that children in England who received a similar adjuvanted vaccine, Pandemrix, during the 2009-10 H1N1 swine flu epidemic had a 14-fold heightened risk of developing narcolepsy, a chronic and potentially debilitating sleep disorder that can cause hallucinations, daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, a form of muscle weakness precipitated by strong emotion.</p> <p>According to GSK, some 30 million doses of Pandemrix were administered across Europe and 800 people, mostly children, developed narcolepsy. While GSK has acknowledged an association between the vaccine and the narcolepsy cases, it has said there is insufficient evidence to prove the adjuvant was to blame.</p> <p>Adjuvants have been used in vaccines for diseases such as diphtheria and tetanus for decades. Now, a new, more powerful generation of adjuvants, including one known as AS03 that is contained in the bird flu vaccine, is being developed whose safety is relatively untested.</p> <p>Previously, the United States has taken a more cautious approach toward adjuvants than some other countries. The FDA did not, for example, approve Pandemrix. U.S. experts felt that traditional, non-adjuvanted H1N1 vaccines made by Sanofi SA and others offered enough protection against the virus.</p> <p>But an advisory panel voted unanimously that the FDA should approve the vaccine against bird flu, which kills nearly 60 percent of those who become infected. By comparison, the H1N1 virus kills fewer than 1 percent of those infected.</p> <p>The H5N1 bird flu virus was first isolated in a human in Hong Kong in 1997 and began to spread throughout Southeast Asia in 2003. A 2011 report by the World Health Organization showed only 566 people had been infected with bird flu worldwide, compared with millions infected with the 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus. My Crazy Life

I love love love the friendships I've made through blogland!<br /><br />It's so much fun when somebody reaches out and then you end up becoming friends!  But... you end up having to tell your story over and over again.  Out in world, you meet someone and get to know each other through whatever that connecting point is.  It might just stay there or you might become close friends over time and learn deeper stuff eventually.<br /><br />It's different here! We can't just be content with your kid is on my kid's soccer team.  No, it's all the deep stuff that binds us together.  And we like talking about it, otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place. So it's like almost an obligatory thing, dishing out the big story first.<br /><br />So it's dawned on me that I'm saying the same things again and again and again. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Daniel Kelley</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>GLENMOORE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) – Surrounded by rows of kale and collard greens, Bill Shick ticks off statistics about yields and the man-hours it takes to harvest the leafy green vegetables.</p> <p>What he can’t tell you is what he would sell it for – because it will all be given away by the Chester County Food Bank in its efforts to grow food for the needy. The fresh produce program gives low-sodium, low-sugar foods to the poorest Americans year-round, including during the holiday season often associated with canned-food drives.</p> <p>“We picked a thousand pounds this weekend and we’ll do another thousand next week,” Shick, the food bank’s agricultural director said, while standing in a greenhouse where the program grows seedlings in a suburban Philadelphia park.</p> <p>Chester County is among about 20 food banks across the country that have started their own farms to boost healthier eating by the needy, said Domenic Vitiello, a University of Pennsylvania professor who has studied food pantry agricultural operations.</p> <p>Low-income Americans are a demographic often plagued by diet-related ailments such as diabetes and heart disease.</p> <p>Chester County Food Bank opened about five years ago, springing from the ashes of a similar program that relied on nearby Amish farmers. It was started explicitly with the goal of distributing food straight from the field.</p> <p>Canned food that is often donated to food banks because of its long shelf life is typically higher in sodium, which the American Heart Association says may increase risk for heart failure. People with diabetes also are encouraged to limit the sodium in their daily diet to 1,500 mg to help prevent or control high blood pressure, according to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.</p> <div class="body-related"> <div class="img-wrap"> <div class="cta-overlay"> <span class="cta-text xsmall">View gallery</span><span class="icon-slideshow icon-white-slideshow-xsmall">.”</span> </div> <p><img alt="Chester County Food Bank agricultural director Bill …" class="body-related-thumb lzbg" height="200px" src="http://l.yimg.com/os/mit/media/m/base/images/transparent-1093278.png" style="" title="" width="300px"></p> </div> <div class="body-related-title photo-caption" style="width: 300px;">Chester County Food Bank agricultural director Bill Shick covers a hydroponic growing bed holding le …</div> </div> <p>“The cans we’ve gotten in through the years – it’s not the healthiest stuff,” said Larry Welsch, Chester County Food Bank’s executive director. “I’ve gotten cans of pickled cactus with 2,800 (milli) grams of sodium.”</p> <p>CONTRIBUTING THROUGH VOLUNTEERING</p> <p>“When we formed this food bank,” Welsch said, “it wasn’t going to be cans in, cans out.”</p> <p>The farming effort has offered the public new ways to contribute to the food pantry.</p> <p>“People are very excited to volunteer in the field,” Shick said. “It isn’t stuffing envelopes and putting cans in a box.”</p> <p>In three growing houses in Chester County’s Springton Manor Farm park, the food bank cultivates seedlings for its partners, including private farmers and corporations such as Endo Health Solutions and Malvern, Pennsylvania-based Vanguard Group. Some schools use the seedlings to grow vegetables for student lunches, others raise their own crops in horticulture and culinary programs, and donate to the food bank what they do not use.</p> <p>The charity grows food on more than a dozen acres spread across multiple sites. To supplement its crop yield, the food bank buys from a farm auction in nearby Lancaster County.</p> <p>Fresh produce makes up about 22 percent of the edibles the Chester County Food Bank distributes. It ranks sixth-highest in the nation for the amount of fresh produce it distributes as a percentage of all the food it gives out, according to statistics compiled by a University of Pennsylvania researcher.</p> <p>Growing produce allows food banks to distribute a wider variety, including leafy greens, Shick said.</p> <p>But it also means footing the expense of buying commercial refrigerators and refrigerated trucks, said Ross Fraser, a spokesman for the nonprofit Feeding America. Those costly hurdles have slowed the transition of food cupboards away from canned goods able to last for months in church basements and toward often more nutritious, but perishable food.</p> <p>Nationwide, most food bank agricultural programs are still in the experimental stages, but they share some characteristics, Vitiello said. They are usually located in wealthier areas because of the start-up expense, and they tend to have educational components that can be just as important as feeding people.</p> <p>Chester County is Pennsylvania’s wealthiest, with an economy buoyed by the pharmaceutical industry. First Christmas Fair

Where once cows grazed in rocky meadows on mountain slopes, now rows and rows of Frasers grow in the cool temperatures of this southwestern area of the Commonwealth.<br /><br />Journalist Bill Lohmann has taken a look at Grayson's Fraser fir Christmas tree industry in today's <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/entertainment-life/holiday/christmas-trees-are-gift-to-va-s-grayson-county/article_a2922a46-ac6c-592f-87d6-e4592ecb4d1f.html"><i>Richmond Times-Dispatch</i></a>, a business that took root in the 1970s and has grown into an economic boom:<br /><blockquote>The steep and rocky mountains of Grayson County are some of the tallest, most spectacular in Virginia, wonderful for hiking and sightseeing but less than ideal for farming — unless you are growing Christmas trees.</blockquote>One whiff of a Fraser and you'll be hooked.<br /><br />Mr. Lohmann talked with one of the pioneers of <a href="http://www.mtrogersfraserfir.org/">Fraser farming in Grayson</a>, Rodney Richardson, owner of <a href="http://www.mtrogersfraserfir.org/tfchoosecut.html">Mount Rogers Christmas Tree Farm</a>, who has some well-known clients. REUTERS/Heinz-Peter Bader</div> </div> <p>William Demant, which has a 23 percent market share, will not go into details but says there is greater engagement with the mobile phone industry.</p> <p>“We will have great stuff with connectivity for all types of mobile phones,” Finn Mohring, Vice President of Research and Development at William Demant, who previously worked at Nokia for nearly two decades, told Reuters.</p> <p>Asked if it might also collaborate with mobile makers, he said: “Probably. We will not be seen trailing in the dust on this area.”</p> <p>William Demant, Sonova, Germany’s Siemens and privately owned Widex in Denmark all use lower frequency bands which some argue provide better sound quality. They also have 2.4 GHz in third devices, but not in their hearing aids.</p> <p>Starkey Technologies in the United States uses an 800-900 MHz platform. This time, I was invited by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to celebrate the publication of their Bird Atlas 2007-2011, and of course, I will attend the Royal Society’s 2013 Winton science book prize.</p> <p>These book-related ceremonies bookend my visit, which leaves me some time in the middle fpr other events. For example, today, I am taking a tour of Warner Brothers’ The Making of Harry Potter: Hogwarts in the Snow.
