<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://static4.businessinsider.com/image/5286962b6da8114657a030a2-480-/cops-robbers-pulp-fiction.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>One of the most powerful myths about Bitcoin - the encrypted, independent online currency that's become a huge trend in recent months - is that Bitcoin is 'secure.'</p><br /><p>Bitcoin.org, the semi-official voice of the Bitcoin community, says 'the whole system is protected by heavily peer-reviewed cryptographic algorithms like those used for online banking. No organization or individual can control Bitcoin, and the network remains secure even if not all of its users can be trusted.'</p><br /><p>But Bitcoin is not secure.</p><br /><p>There have been dozens of robberies of Bitcoin banks and exchanges, and millions of dollars have been lost.</p><br /><p>To put that in perspective, if robbers were routinely walking into brick-and-mortar banks and taking millions of dollars, with zero consequences and no arrests, it would make huge headlines every day. The media would be on high alert for the next heist.</p><br /><p>But on the Internet, Bitcoin thefts worth hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars happen on a weekly basis and no one cares.</p><br /><p>Here are a few recent examples of Bitcoin robberies, and then we'll explain why Bitcoin is not 100% 'secure.'</p><br /><p><img src="http://static5.businessinsider.com/image/524c6f97eab8ea724a54fc6a-955-984/screen-shot-2013-10-02-at-2.20.01-pm.jpg" width="600"/>Perhaps the biggest heist was pulled off by the U.S. government. After Ross Ulbricht, the alleged 'Dread Pirate Roberts' who ran the online drugs market Silk Road was arrested by the FBI, authorities reported they had seized nearly $29 million in Bitcoins controlled by him. Techdirt later noted that some of the money may have belonged to users who did business on his site, and not all the business transacted there was illegal.</p><br /><p>Don't hold you breath for refunds.</p><br /><p>Here's a website devoted to listing dozens of Bitcoin robberies through 2012. In 2011, Ars Technica reported on this description of what it is like to be the victim of Bitcoin theft:</p><br /><p>The user known as 'allinvain' is a long-time contributor to the Bitcoin forums. He says he's been mining Bitcoins for over a year, and had amassed a fortune of 25,000 BTC. This was a modest sum a few months ago, when Bitcoins were worth pennies, but over the last two months the value of a Bitcoin skyrocketed to around $20, which means 25,000 BTC would have been worth half a million dollars. 'I remember watching the price like a hawk,' he wrote.</p><br /><p>And then disaster struck. 'I just woke up to see a very large chunk of my bitcoin balance gone,' he wrote. 'Needles [sic] to say I feel like I have lost faith in bitcoin.' He speculated that a Windows security flaw may have allowed the culprit to gain access to his digital wallet. 'I feel like killing myself now,' he said.</p><br /><p>Bitcoin is vulnerable in the same way any other online asset is vulnerable: Passwords can be stolen or guessed, accounts can be hacked. Most of the thefts involve hacking into users' accounts. Bitfloor's description of how it lost $250,000 in Bitcoin is typical. A hacker found an unencrypted copy of the coded keys to users' wallets:</p><br /><p>Last night, a few of our servers were compromised. As a result, the attacker gained accesses to an unencrypted backup of the wallet keys (the actual keys live in an encrypted area). Using these keys they were able to transfer the coins. This attack took the vast majority of the coins BitFloor was holding on hand. As a result, I have paused all exchange operations.</p><br /><p><img src="http://static3.businessinsider.com/image/5286941aeab8eaa378a030a4-388-291/money-on-fire.png" width="600"/>In fact, Bitcoin defenders say this is exactly the point. Bitcoin isn't insecure - you are!</p><br /><p>Here's Bitcoin.org's answer to that very question on security:</p><br /><p>Although these events are unfortunate, none of them involve Bitcoin itself being hacked, nor imply inherent flaws in Bitcoin; just like a bank robbery doesn't mean that the dollar is compromised. However, it is accurate to say that a complete set of good practices and intuitive security solutions is needed to give users better protection of their money, and to reduce the general risk of theft and loss.</p><br /><p>The idea that Bitcoin is 'secure' even though it can be stolen is a bit like saying that gold is 'secure,' even if it is being spirited away by gangsters. They can't destroy the gold, after all.</p><br /><p>What they really mean is that Bitcoins themselves cannot be copied or faked, like counterfeit bills. Anyone receiving a Bitcoin can be confident that it is real and valuable.</p><br /><p><img src="http://static2.businessinsider.com/image/5286967569beddb43fa9576b-1024-697/5429526232_96c55f6db4_b.jpg" width="600"/>But that aspect of its security - the permanence of the value in the transaction - turns out to be Bitcoin's biggest security flaw. Once a Bitcoin transaction has been approved by both sides, it cannot be reversed without the permission of the receipient. So when hackers engineer the transaction, the cash is gone forever.</p><br /><p>That's not what happens with traditional currency. In the U.S., if your bank is robbed or even if the bank goes out of business, the FDIC backs up the lost deposits and replaces your money, up to $250,000 per bank.</p><br /><p>And then there is this new theory from Cornell University which posits that there is an incentive in the system for users to cooperate and hoard their coins until they control a majority of available Bitcoins. The stake held by Kerimov and his partners has a market value of about $5.2 billion. OAO Uralchem owner Dmitry Mazepin may join Onexim as a partner in the deal, two of the people said.</p><br /><p>A sale may defuse a dispute between Russia and Belarus sparked by Uralkali's July withdrawal from a partnership that marketed 40 percent of global potash exports. The falling-out and Uralkali's plan to boost production roiled the $20 billion market for the soil nutrient. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/dam/assets/131117161639-obama-geithner-2008-620xa.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>President-elect Obama announced Tim Geithner as his nominee for treasury secretary shortly after the 2008 election.</p><br />Tim Geithner, the former Treasury secretary and longtime government employee, is about to take home a significantly larger paycheck.<br /><p>He was one of the least wealthy Treasury chiefs in recent history -- and he suffered at least a 50% pay cut when taking that job.</p><br /><p>But with a new appointment at the private equity firm Warburg Pincus, plus income from a book deal and paid speeches, Geithner is poised to make many times his salary in the public sector, where he worked for 25 years.</p><br /><p>Geithner was a pauper next to his predecessor Hank Paulson, the former Goldman Sachs Goldman CEO who was possibly worth upwards of $500 million. Although Paulson was one of the richest Treasury secretaries, many who take the job do so after a lucrative career on Wall Street.</p><br /><p>Not Geithner. He started at the Treasury Department in 1988 after a short time at the consulting firm Kissinger Associates. Geithner specialized in international economics and rose through the Treasury ranks, then took a leadership role at the International Monetary Fund. In 2003, he was picked to head the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.</p><br /><p>Geithner earned $411,200, plus benefits and an even larger severance payout, in his final year at the Fed, according to financial disclosures.</p><br /><p>As Treasury secretary, he earned a salary of $199,700. His net worth has been estimated at between $239,000 and $6 million.</p><br /><p>Related: How much is a Treasury Secretary worth?</p><br /><p>Neither the private equity firm, book publisher nor speaking agency disclosed details of Geithner's pay.</p><br /><p>But his fee per speech is estimated to reach six figures, in line with speaking fees paid to other former top government officials. In the first half of this year, he brought in $400,000 for three speeches, according to the <i>Financial Times</i>, which cited unnamed people familiar with the speeches. One was at the annual meeting of Warburg Pincus, the <i>Financial Times</i> reported.</p><br /><p>Random House announced last spring Geithner was working on a book about the financial crisis.</p><br /><p>His will follow the 2010 publication of Paulson's 'On the Brink.' Paulson made the first TARP payments before handing the baton to Geithner, and now leads a think tank at the University of Chicago.</p><br /><p>Related: Where are the key players of the fiscal crisis now?</p><br /><p>But several secretaries before Paulson returned to private firms, including Robert Rubin, who served under President Clinton, then took a key post at Citigroup -- one of the banks which needed billions in federal bailout money to stay afloat.</p><br /><p>The so-called revolving door between the public and private sectors gives government officials a route to cash in, said Chris Edwards, director of tax policy studies at the Cato Institute.</p><br /><p>'The federal government pay scale tends to compress earnings into a narrower range than private markets,' he said. Lower-ranked officials make more than their private sector peers, but 'at the top end, there's absolutely no doubt ... that they can do better in the private sector.'</p><br /><p>Edwards said financial firms value former federal workers for two reasons: their connections and their understanding of the byzantine rules, regulations and processes inside Washington. They're also willing to pay someone of Geithner's experience many, many times his federal salary, he said.</p><br /><p>Related: What Jack Lew is worth</p><br /><p>And then there's the prestige of bringing Tim Geithner on board.</p><br /><p>'Any financial firm would be thrilled to have a Treasury secretary who understands everything about [the way] Washington speaks,' said Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. 'Any cabinet secretary can expect to go out and make a lot of money, but particularly in Treasury.'</p><br /><p>Geithner left office in January and begins at Warburg Pincus in March 2014. He is barred for one year from lobbying the government on issues he previously worked on, Sloan said, although the firm did not say Geithner's role includes lobbying.</p><br /><p>Warburg Pincus said Geithner will have a significant strategic and managerial role as president and managing director. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71171000/jpg/_71171566_71135639.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Workers at Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have begun removing fuel rods from a storage pond at the Unit 4 reactor building.</p><br /><p>The delicate operation is seen as a necessary step in stabilising the site.</p><br /><p>It will take more than two days to remove the first 22 fuel rods from the pond, plant operator Tepco says.</p><br /><p>Overall, more than 1,500 rods must be be removed in what correspondents describe as a risky and dangerous operation expected to take a year.</p><br /><p>Experts say hydrogen explosions after the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 have made the current storage facility vulnerable to further tremors.</p><br /><p>The fuel rods are four-metre long tubes containing pellets of uranium fuel, and the fear is that some may have been damaged during the disaster.</p><br />Removing fuel rods The fuel rods - 4m-long tubes containing pellets of uranium fuel - are in a precarious state in the Unit Four storage pool The rod assemblies will be lifted out in batches of 22 in casks filled with water, using a crane - each batch will take 7-10 days Two critical issues are whether the rods were damaged during the disaster and so are likely to leak, and whether the casks remain watertight so the rods have no contact with air The fuel rods will be deposited into a new 'common' pool with a cooling system<br /><p>When the tsunami struck, water knocked out cooling systems to three of Fukushima's reactors, which went into a state of partial meltdown.</p><br /><p>Unit 4 was undergoing maintenance, so all of its fuel rods were being stored. But a build-up of hydrogen triggered an explosion in Unit 4, damaging its structure.</p><br /><p>'Important process'</p><br /><p>The removal process, which has been preceded by months of repair work and planning, began on Monday afternoon.</p><br /><p>'At 15:18 [06:18 GMT], we started to pull up the first fuel assembly with a crane,' a spokesman for Tepco (Tokyo Electric Power Company) said.</p><br /><p>A recently-installed crane is being lowered into the pool and hooked onto the rods to place them inside a cask.</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71172000/jpg/_71172087_020035280-1.jpg" width="600"/><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71172000/jpg/_71172089_020035335-1.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>The fuel rods will then be deposited into a more secure storage pool with a cooling system.</p><br /><p>Experts say it it vital that the casks are watertight so the rods have no contact with air - which risks overheating and possible contamination.</p><br /><p>Yoshihide Suga, Japan's top government spokesman, said he hoped the operation would be done properly.</p><br /><p>'We hope that this [process] will be conducted in a manner that will not disturb local residents, and that the removal will be done on schedule, properly and safely,' he said.</p><br /><p>Tepco spokesman Masayuki Ono called the operation 'a very important process in moving ahead with the plant's decommissioning'.</p><br /><p>Nuclear Regulation Authority Chairman Shunichi Tanaka has warned that rubble from the blast in the pool could pose a problem, Kyodo news agency reported.</p><br /><p>'The fuel has to be handled very carefully. There is a need to make sure that a fuel assembly is not pulled out (from the fuel rack) by force when it gets stuck because of the rubble,' Kyodo news agency quoted him as saying.</p><br /><p>The Fukushima nuclear power plant has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months, including a series of toxic water leaks and worker errors.</p><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/dam/assets/131118023909-dwaynebowe-111813-single-image-cut.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>DENVER -- This was, of course, the working assumption all along with these Kansas City Chiefs. We were waiting to see their obvious weakness exploited. The standings said the Chiefs were a 'perfect'' 9-0 entering Sunday night's AFC West showdown against Denver, but everyone knew where their vulnerability was.</p><br /><p>If they get ahead, they're likely going to stay ahead. But if they fall behind, well, Sunday night at Sports Authority Field told the sad story on that front.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs have many strengths, but they simply aren't made to play catch-up ball, or deal with a deficit of any magnitude. The first opponent to put them into a significant hole was going to beat them, and that eventuality came to pass against Denver, which got out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and was never truly in danger of losing to the NFL's last remaining unbeaten team.</p><br /><p>The 1972 Dolphins might be celebrating with their ritual champagne -- their 17-0 perfect season is still a singular event -- but it was Kansas City that learned a sobering truth about itself against Denver.</p><br /><p>Make no mistake, the Broncos' 27-17 victory over Kansas City did not represent Denver's best punch -- far from it. The Chiefs still couldn't take it. Kansas City has thrived by winning low-scoring games this season, and this wasn't even low-scoring enough for its purposes. The Broncos (9-1) at one point built a 14-point advantage over the Chiefs, and with the way K.C. is built to win, 14-point deficits are very tall mountains to climb.</p><br /><p>'They got us today,'' said Chiefs first-year head coach Andy Reid, experiencing defeat for the first time since his last game in Philadelphia, last Dec. 30. 'To start with, when you've got the opportunity to score touchdowns against this team, you've got to score touchdowns and not kick field goals. I thought out defense gave us (a chance). But we've got to take full advantage of that.''</p><br /><p>The Chiefs (9-1) didn't fail miserably in this big-stage setting, but they did fail. And the skeptics will say this is what happens when Reid's team isn't facing a backup quarterback, as it seemed to do so often over the course of its somewhat charmed season. Or they will say that this is what happens when the Chiefs' running game doesn't dominate, their pass rush doesn't overwhelm, and their game-manager quarterback ( Alex Smith) doesn't have a lead to preserve and protect. This game illustrated that Kansas City's margin of error is relatively small on offense, and it can't survive against good teams when it turns the ball over in the red zone (as it did on fullback Anthony Sherman's fumble at Denver's 16-yard line in the first quarter), or settles for chip-shot field goals (a 20-yarder by Ryan Succop in the second quarter) instead of touchdowns.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs were never really out of this game, but in some ways, it felt as if they were never really in it, either. That's the problem with a team that isn't equipped or constructed to score quickly or play from behind. A two-score game feels like it's out of reach, and a double-digit deficit seems like it carries the weight of a much larger gap.</p><br /><p>Coming into the Denver game, the Chiefs hadn't faced any deficit larger than seven points this season. That makes sense for a team that tied an NFL record of not allowing more than 17 points in any of its first nine game. The Chiefs have played their share of tight games, but they haven't faced the firepower that the Broncos can throw at you, and the challenge Sunday night was to keep up with a Denver team on a record scoring pace.</p><br /><p>'Well, not good enough,'' said Smith, when asked how he felt this team fared playing from substantially behind for the first time this season. 'I felt like we put ourselves in holes and didn't start fast enough in the first quarter. We got behind and they got us one dimensional. When they get up a couple scores, you have to answer. We weren't able to get it done tonight. In the third quarter, we had a couple chances to make that game tight, and we couldn't get it done. We hurt ourselves with penalties and with a turnover in the red zone.''</p><br /><p>This time, the Chiefs' defense did not ride to the rescue of the less-than-explosive Kansas City offense, as it did in Week 9 at Buffalo, when a pair of second-half defensive touchdowns helped the Chiefs out-last the Bills. Kansas City came into the Denver game leading the NFL in sacks with 36, but never laid a hand on banged-up Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Denver's 37-year-old QB threw 40 passes, completing 24 for 323 yards and a touchdown, but never had to endure any more pounding on his sore right ankle, on which he wore a brace that was visible through his sock.</p><br /><p>Zero hits on Manning had to be this game's most shocking headline, but the Broncos' offensive line did yeoman work, Manning moved away from pressure in the pocket adeptly, and the Chiefs' pass rush has been a bit slacking of late. After getting to opposing quarterbacks 35 times in the season's first seven games, K.C. has just one sack in its past three games, and its good fortune of facing quarterbacks named Gabbert, Fitzpatrick, Keenum, Pryor, Campbell and Tuel ended abruptly when it stepped up in weight class against the likes of Manning -- gimpy or not.</p><br /><p>'I thought he did a good job of getting the ball out fast, and I thought he worked the pocket pretty well,'' Reid said. 'There were times when we had pressure and you saw him slide and throw opposite (side), which isn't an easy thing to do. He's a pretty good quarterback. He did that and got away with a couple that most guys wouldn't be able to get away with.''</p><br /><p>Smith and the Chiefs' passing offense tried to take their shots down the field at times, but they couldn't produce the chunks of yardage needed to keep up with the Broncos. Smith's longest completion went for 26 yards, to receiver Dwayne Bowe, and his 21-of-45 passing night for 230 yards, to go with three sacks and two touchdowns, wasn't enough to hang with Manning. It was two teams bringing different kinds of weapons to the same fight, and the results were predictable.</p><br /><p>Denver scored 10 more points than Kansas City had allowed all season, and the 17 points the Chiefs scored normally would have won most of their games. But not this one. Not with the Broncos throwing for 323 yards, or 50 more than K.C. had given up to any opponent. Not with running back Jamaal Charles totaling a good but not great 78 yards rushing on 16 carries. And not with the Chiefs committing nine penalties for 53 yards.</p><br /><p>'It's terrible. It's not fun,'' said Smith, of losing, after bringing a starting record of 28-5-1 since the beginning of 2011 into the game. 'As great as it is to win, it's that lousy when you lose, especially in a division game, Sunday Night Football. It's a big game and a big environment. To come here and come up short hurts and stings. But it's good in some ways. We have to find a way to deal with it. How many teams have ever gone undefeated given the history of football? We have to find a way to get better and prepare for next week. We see them again in two weeks, but we have to prepare for another big division game next week against San Diego. These games keep getting bigger.''</p><br /><p>That they do, and the question the Chiefs left unanswered by this game is whether they will be able to elevate their play as the stakes rise? The thinking was that Kansas City could find a silver lining for the rematch in two weeks even with a loss Sunday night, providing they roughed up Manning a little bit and maybe got him to aggravate his tender ankles, or at the very least proved they could stay on the field and slug it out with the high-scoring Broncos. But they seemingly accomplished neither of those goals, and that is sure to affect how the Chiefs approach the rematch in Arrowhead in Week 13.</p><br /><p>The Chiefs found out Sunday that Denver can beat them playing Kansas City's type of game more readily than they can match the Broncos' style of play. For now, the doubts about the Chiefs' vulnerabilities didn't get erased, they only got accentuated. Maybe the story will be different in two weeks. But maybe the AFC West shifted for good here with this outcome, as our assumptions about Kansas City's offensive limitations proved true.</p><br /></div>

(AP) — With all the problems facing the rollout of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, nowhere is the situation worse or more surprising than in Oregon, a progressive state that has enthusiastically embraced the federal law but has so far failed to enroll a single person in coverage through the state’s insurance exchange.</p>  <div class="body-slot-mod">  <div class="yom-remote">  <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div>  </div>  </div>  <p>Despite grand ambitions, an early start, millions of dollars from the federal government and a tech-savvy population, Oregon’s online enrollment system still isn’t ready more than a month after it was supposed to go live. The state has resorted to hiring or reassigning 400 people to process insurance applications by hand.</p>  <p>“We’re all surprised and frustrated that we’re in the position that we’re in now,” said Jesse O’Brien, a health care advocate at the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group, which lobbied for the exchange.</p>  <p>The state has received about 18,000 paper applications, at 19 pages each, and is scrambling to manually file and clear them. State officials have not been able to say when they expect the online system to launch, nor have they established a deadline to submit paper applications in order for coverage to begin Jan. 1. Meanwhile, the exchange’s board is demanding answers from the executive director about when the website will work and how his team will get people enrolled on time.</p>  <p>For consumers, the application process can be long and frustrating.</p>  <p>“I’ve been trying since the very first day of October just to try to find out the coverage I could get,” said Donna George, 43, a bookkeeper from Bend, Ore., who’s been uninsured for three years.</p>  <p>When the online system wouldn’t work, George submitted a paper application Oct. 7 for herself and her husband. Finally, on Nov. 12, she received an enrollment packet that tells her how much of a tax credit she’ll receive and lays out her coverage options. She’s now waiting to meet with her insurance agent to pick a plan and return the forms.</p>  <p>Oregon has long prided itself on being a leader in health policy. Its Medicaid system has been a testing ground for new innovations since the early 1990s. The state started laying the groundwork for an insurance exchange a year before Congress passed the health care law that called for one in every state. Gov. John Kitzhaber, a former emergency room physician, is a respected voice on health reform.</p>  <p>The state also has a large population of young, underemployed progressives who might provide a burgeoning market for affordable coverage. Its ultra-competitive health care market led to lower-than-expected premiums. Lawmakers from both parties have embraced the law. And the Portland area is a thriving hub of technology companies known as the Silicon Forest.</p>  <p>In other words, Oregon had everything going for it.</p>  <p>But its exchange, known as Cover Oregon, became a victim of its own lofty ambitions and the state’s stubborn refusal to dial them back until it was too late.</p>  <p>While exchanges in many states are telling applicants who appear to qualify for Medicaid to contact a separate agency, Oregon insists its exchange must be a “one-stop shop” for both Medicaid and private insurance. The state also wants its exchange to eventually be able to help enroll people in a wide array of public-assistance programs, not just health care.</p>  <p>Exchange leaders stuck with their plan even as risk consultants warned repeatedly that they were in danger of missing the Oct. 1 deadline to launch.</p>  <p>“We won’t know whether we made the right decisions until our system is up and running,” said Amy Fauver, chief communications officer for Cover Oregon. “But we’re going forward in the way we feel we can best serve Oregonians.”</p>  <p>Exchange officials say they haven’t fully launched their website because their software still can’t accurately determine whether applicants are eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, particularly for people with complex family arrangements.</p>  <p>Kitzhaber, a Democrat, has pledged that the problems won’t “interfere with our objective of making sure that every Oregonian that wants to be enrolled” by the start of the new year “is, in fact, enrolled.”</p>  <p>Oregon does have one big success to brag about. The state has enrolled 70,000 people in Medicaid, reducing the ranks of the uninsured by more than 10 percent. The large number of Medicaid enrollments came in large part thanks to a “fast-track” enrollment process approved by the Obama administration. Using income data already on file, the state mailed a simple seven-question Medicaid enrollment form to people in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program who qualify for health coverage under the federal health law’s expansion of Medicaid.</p>  <p>Pressure is growing on exchange officials to fix their problems. U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader, a moderate Democrat who took heat after voting for the health care law, released a sharply worded statement on Friday demanding that the exchange and its main contractor, Oracle, make it work.</p>  <p>“The implementation of Oregon’s health insurance marketplace has been abysmal,” Schrader said. “The current situation is completely unacceptable, and I expect much more from a state with a reputation for being an innovator in the field of health care.”</p>  <p>___</p>  <p>Follow AP writer Jonathan J.
