At the end of mass, the Roman Catholic congregation broke into applause.</p> <p>Rosario Capidos, 55, sat crying in one row, hugging her nine-year-old grandson, Cyrich.</p> <p>Capidos had been sheltering at home with nine other members of her family when Haiyan struck on November 8. As the waters rose, she floated her three grandchildren on a slab of styrofoam through a road flooded with debris and shipping containers to a nearby Chinese temple. Her family survived.</p> <p>“That’s why I’m crying,” she said. “I thank God I was given a second chance to live.”</p> <p>A massive relief effort is finally kicking into gear, nine days after one of the most powerful typhoons on record wreaked havoc across the impoverished area in the central Philippines with monster winds and a deadly storm surge of sea water.</p> <p>Philippine authorities and international aid agencies face a mounting humanitarian crisis, with the number of people displaced by the catastrophe estimated at 4 million, up from 900,000 late last week.</p> <p>Nearly half a million houses were damaged by the storm, half of them destroyed, according to the United Nations.</p> <p>While aid packages have begun to reach more remote areas, much of it carried by helicopters brought by the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, the United Nations said people were still going hungry in some mountainous provinces.</p> <p>It said information about several provinces in the west of the Visayas region remained “limited”, with 60 percent of people in towns in the northeast part of Capiz province needing food support.</p> <p>“I remain concerned about the health and well-being of the millions of men, women and children who are still in desperate need,” U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said in a statement.</p> <p>President Benigno Aquino, caught off guard by the scale of the disaster, is scheduled to visit affected areas on Sunday. He has been criticized for the slow pace of aid distribution and unclear estimates of casualties, especially in Tacloban, capital of hardest-hit Leyte province.</p> <p>There are 1,186 people missing, according to the national count. The official death toll has only risen by 60 since Friday, giving hope that initial local estimates of 10,000 dead were overstated.</p> <p>The government estimated damage to infrastructure and agriculture at about 10 billion pesos ($ 230 million), the bulk of it in the farming sector. The United Nations warned that economic and human cost could rise if aid did not reach farmers in rice-growing regions in time for the next planting season in December and January.</p> <p>It also said that fishing, another crucial food source, had been placed in jeopardy by the storm.</p> <p>“The destruction of boats, fishing gear, fish ponds and related equipment left many families with no means of livelihood and decreased protein intake,” the U.N. <p>Doing their bit for the conservation of indigenous medicinal plants, the Ezhimala Indian Naval Academy is all set to launch an Oushadha poonkavanam (garden of medicinal plants) in two separate spots on its campus in Kannur district.</p> <p>It was a news report that appeared in Express that inspired Naval Academy Base Commander Santhosh Pillai to set up herbal a garden there.</p> <p>The Oushadha poonkavanam project, a joint effort of the Naval Academy and Hamsa Madikai, a ninth generation member of the family of Sufi healers, focuses on preserving  endangered medicinal plants.</p> <p> The mission plans to integrate cultivation with popularising  the need to cultivate plants.</p> <p>“Nobody can wash his hands of the obligation to preserve the disappearing greenery,” said Commander Santhosh.</p> <p> “How healthy would it be especially for the cadets if they wake up breathing fresh air from the medicinal plants! Here, we already have a good collection of medicinal plants and this project is an attempt to widen our collection,” he said.</p> <p>“If people from other walks of lives are also interested in the green mission it can take a giant leap forward in the protection of nature,” he added.</p> <p>As an initial step, ahead of the launch, Hamsa Madikai took a one-day class on the importance of medicinal plants, for the cadets.</p> <p>“If one cadet on the campus gets a thorough knowledge about the application of a minimum of five herbals, it would be the success of the project,” said Hamsa Madikai.</p> <p> “We want to make the present generation the custodians of traditional medicines. Vaidyar Hamsa Madikai grows around 1,424 varieties of medicinal plants, of which 800 herbs are rare.</p> <p> Around 500 medicinal plants, including aloe wood, elephant creeper, Ashoka tree, sandal tree, Indian ginseng, broom creeper, Malabar gulbel, lavender, peppermint, parsley, three-leaved-caper, arrowleaf sida, rosary pea, asparagus, red sandalwood, neem, brahmi, garcinia and many more will be planted on the five-acre land allotted for the garden.</p> <p>He will supply the medicinal plants for the academy without charging any money.</p> <p> Vaidyar Hamsa, hailing from Madikai in Kasaragod, embarked on the mission to save rare herbal remedies by launching herbal groves last year. As part of his mission he also sets up oushadha poonkavanams in schools across the state.  M Kunhiraman, state president of the Oushadha Sasya Padana Bala Sabha, run by Vaidyar Hamsa, said the Naval Academy had shown an exemplary model for society. At the end of mass, the Roman Catholic congregation broke into applause.</p> <p>Rosario Capidos, 55, sat crying in one row, hugging her nine-year-old grandson, Cyrich.</p> <p>Capidos had been sheltering at home with nine other members of her family when Haiyan struck on November 8. As the waters rose, she floated her three grandchildren on a slab of styrofoam through a road flooded with debris and shipping containers to a nearby Chinese temple. He has been criticized for the slow pace of aid distribution and unclear estimates of casualties, especially in Tacloban, capital of hardest-hit Leyte province.</p> <p>There are 1,186 people missing, according to the national count. The official death toll has only risen by 60 since Friday, giving hope that initial local estimates of 10,000 dead were overstated.</p> <p>The government estimated damage to infrastructure and agriculture at about 10 billion pesos ($ 230 million), the bulk of it in the farming sector. 'The tight ends and receivers did a great job of springing me for the long runs.</p><br /><p>'When a running back gets the momentum, you got to keep running him.'</p><br /><p>Louisville's defense meanwhile awakened to hold the Cougars (7-3, 4-2 American Athletic Conference) to 41 second-half yards and help the Cardinals (9-1, 5-1 American Athletic Conference) win their third straight game and stay within reach of first-place Central Florida.</p><br /><p>Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater completed 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards but had his streak of 21 games with a touchdown pass end at 21. DeVante Parker had four receptions for 72 yards, including a 39-yarder that set up Brown's second TD run.</p><br /><p>John Wallace kicked field goals of 37 and 39 yards for the Cardinals, who outgained the Cougars 332-195 and just 15 on the ground.</p><br /><p>'At halftime we made an adjustment to stop the run,' linebacker James Burgess said. 'There wasn't much they could do once we stopped the run.'</p><br /><p>Brown had been building toward his career game in recent weeks, posting his first 100-yard game at South Florida last month to become the primary back that Louisville has sought all season after using a rotation that included Senorise Perry and former Auburn star Michael Dyer.</p><br /><p>Against Houston, Brown started both halves with game-changing plays.</p><br /><p>After capping Louisville's first drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, the junior provided a 17-13 lead with his second TD run on the opening possession of the second half, just the spark that the Cardinals needed following a lethargic second quarter. Louisville held the ball for 12:24 in the period, and Houston never recovered.</p><br /><p>'If we're going to hold an opponent to 20 points, we feel like we're in a good chance to win the football game with what we do offensively,' Houston coach Tony Levine said. 'I felt like we had opportunities, we had possessions offensively to get that done, and we just didn't.'</p><br /><p>Brown's second TD led to frustration for Houston safety Adrian McDonald, who was ejected for punching Louisville offensive lineman Kamran Joyer several times on the play.</p><br /><p>The game marked Louisville's first Saturday night contest in five years and its first meeting against Houston since a 65-27 victory in 2004 -- their second straight 60-point performance against the Cougars.</p><br /><p>Houston looked poised to jump on the Cardinals right away when Demarcus Ayers returned the opening kickoff 61 yards with the help of five missed tackles, and the Cougars moved 11 yards for a first down at the Louisville 28. After three straight incompletions, they gambled on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal into the wind, but John O'Korn's slant pass to Xavier Maxwell came up 5 yards short.</p><br /><p>Brown's running quickly got the Cardinals on the board, carrying seven times for 44 yards, including the touchdown run off left tackle. Wallace's first field goal two drives later put Louisville up 10-0.</p><br /><p>Houston needed just two drives to tie the game, driving 48 yards for Kyle Bullard's 46-yard field goal and 60 yards ending in Kenneth Farrow's 4-yard run with 6:35 left before halftime. Those drives were telling as the Cougars' no-huddle offense seemed to confuse the Cardinals' defense, which struggled to keep up.</p><br /><p>Defensively, Houston succeeded in pressuring Bridgewater, sacking him twice and keeping him on the run at other times.</p><br /><p>Two key plays helped the Cougars take a 13-10 lead. The first was Michaelee Harris' muffed punt recovered at the Louisville 39 by Trevon Stewart, who entered leading the nation with eight turnovers.</p><br /><p>Louisville appeared to escape damage when Hakeem Smith intercepted O'Korn's tipped pass at the 15 and returned it to the 35. But Cardinals defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was penalized for roughing O'Korn, wiping out the turnover and setting up first down at the 24 and leading to Bullard's 22-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the half.</p><br /><p>The Cardinals quickly snatched the momentum away from the Cougars with Brown leading the way.</p><br /><p>'We got kind of complacent and got comfortable,' Louisville coach Charlie Strong said of the first half. He burst onto the scene as a high school freshman, and his recruitment picked up rather quickly. Michigan State was the heavy favorite early on, and the Spartans still seemed to be the leader prior to the AAU season. Kentucky made its play and moved to the forefront – before falling back rather quickly. Late in the summer, it appeared Kansas and Illinois were the ones with momentum, but DePaul and Memphis also had their moments in the sun for Alexander. The Fighting Illini had most of the momentum the past couple of weeks, but an unofficial visit last weekend to Lawrence stemmed the tide and the Jayhawks restaked their claim. The relationship between Kansas assistant Jerrance Howard (who recruited Alexander while he was at Illinois) and Alexander, as well as the fact Alexander's girlfriend attends Kansas, were keys.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em;">Alexander, a 6-foot-9 big man from Curie (Ill.), is ranked No. 3 in the <a href="http://247sports.com/Season/2014-Basketball/CompositeRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool" style="color: #6e8dcf; text-decoration: none;">247Sports Composite</a>for the class of 2014. He is as college-ready as anyone in the country, and his strength and build will enable him to be a dominant force next season in the Big 12. Alexander is an extremely strong rebounder, and his 260-lb. frame gives him the edge in most battles on the boards. He's very tough and has a good motor. Once he develops consistent back-to-the-basket moves, Alexander is going to be an absolute force.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em;">Kansas only has two commitments in the class of 2014, but they are both elite-level players. Alexander joins five-star small forward Kelly Oubre, the No. 7-ranked player in the 247Sports Composite. He chose Kansas over Kentucky last month. But Bill Self probably isn't done in 2014. Texas big man Myles Turner is still a target, and an interesting prospect to watch could be five-star guard Jaquan Lyle. The former Louisville commit is close with Alexander, and Self could be looking for a point guard.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em;">The Jayhawks will obviously see <a class="playerLink" href="http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/players/playerpage/2104339/andrew-wiggins" style="color: #6e8dcf; text-decoration: none;">Andrew Wiggins</a> leave for the NBA, although center <a class="playerLink" href="http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/players/playerpage/2104334/joel-embiid" style="color: #6e8dcf; text-decoration: none;">Joel Embiid</a> and guard Wayne Selden are also potential lottery picks. <a class="playerLink" href="http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/players/playerpage/1780279/tarik-black" style="color: #6e8dcf; text-decoration: none;">Tarik Black</a> is the lone senior – and Alexander will slide in perfectly as his replacement.</div><br /><br /><br /></div>
