Thoughts on the Employment Report

Today's <a href="http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">employment report</a> was exceptionally weak.<br /><br />It's worse than the headline numbers suggest. That drop in the unemployment rate from 7.3% to 7.2% isn't all it is advertised to be. Some might even call it mostly <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/graph/?g=nCV">rounding error</a>. If we continue to do so, then the unemployment rate will soon begin to rise again (confirming that the Fed has not permanently put a stop to the business cycle, much to the surprise and dismay of those embracing risk assets at any price).<br /><br />It's not all bad news though. Sue Herera of CNBC told us today that 80% of 20-year-olds don't trust the stock market. That means 20% still do! Amazing! Once they've paid off all that monstrous student debt, find employment someday (hopefully in a field that requires a college degree), paid for health care, and possibly helped support their parents in retirement, they can invest whatever is left into it. Just think of all that remaining cash flow!<br /><br />This assumes of course that we don't have another recession that pops all that optimism.<br /><br />Don't let it concern you that the unemployment rate of those aged 25 and higher with college degrees rose from <a href="http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t04.htm">3.5% to 3.7%</a> over the last month. That's probably just sampling error and not the start of a new trend. If nothing else, the unemployment rate of those aged 25 and higher without a high school diploma fell from 11.3% to 10.3%. Whew! We needed that in order to get that unemployment rate headline number to fall. It would have been anarchy without it!<br /><br />In summary, it was a fantastic employment report for our short-term financial system, and isn't that all that really matters? It means ZIRP will continue to be with us longer than most expect, which is kind of funny when you think about it. <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2012/12/zirp-how-long.html">The end of ZIRP is always two years away!</a><br /><br />This post does include some sarcasm. Across America, <a href="http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/basicfact.htm" rel="nofollow">nearly 58 billion workers and their families</a> rely on Social Security every month to pay the bills.<br /><br />But once again, the<a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/01/fix-debt-is-full-of-crap.html"> greedy billionaires behind Fix the Debt</a> are trying to cut Social Security benefits so they don't have to pay their fair share of taxes. They don't care that Social Security keeps millions out of poverty. They don't care that it's essential to sustaining what's left of the middle class.<br /><br />The greedy billionaires are now trying to persuade Congress to cut Social Security (and probably Medicare) when they meet in three months to discuss budget cuts. They're trying to disguise it by calling it "chained CPI," which is nothing but jargon for "cuts."<br /><br />Unions are out front warning Americans of the looming threat -- just like the last time the billionaires tried to push the cuts through Congress. Teamster General President Jim Hoffa <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/teamsters-strongly-oppose-cuts-social-security">staunchly opposes the cuts, which hurt the oldest and poorest retirees the most:</a><br /><div style="margin-left: 30px;"><br />Social Security does not contribute to the budget deficit and should remain off the table in these year-end budget negotiations.  Americans work all their lives to earn the Social Security benefits they were promised. It would be a terrible mistake to go back on that promise.</div><br />Even though <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/10/19/5-incredible-social-security-facts-that-young-adul/" rel="nofollow">less than three-quarters of the fund </a>comes from payroll deductions, Fix the Debt minions have been spreading misinformation, saying that Social Security will cause the US to go bankrupt.  When an anchor from CNBC claimed that the US may well go bankrupt from Social Security, Damon Silver, the AFL-CIO's policy director, <a href="http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Political-Action-Legislation/ZING!-Talking-Truth-to-CNBC-on-Social-Security-Lies" rel="nofollow">set the record straight</a>:<br /><br /><div style="margin-left: 30px;">That’s frankly not true. That is a lie put forward by billionaires who don’t want to pay higher taxes....The people who believe what you said are people not counting on those programs and who are worried their very large incomes will be taxed.</div><br /><div style="margin-left: 30px;">Chained CPI is like the vampire of American politics. It keeps being shot through the heart and it keeps reviving. The reason it keeps coming back is because it has billionaires behind it. </div><br />Our nation needs to keep the decades-old promise to workers.  There is no such thing as an acceptable cut -- especially when the country has more than enough resources to fund the program that keeps millions of seniors out of poverty.<br /><br />

"See You Tonight" Sells 50K first week, Opens as Billboard #1 Country Album

"See You Tonight" should open its first week on the top of the BillBoard Country album chart with sales of 50,000, ending up #6 or #7 on the overall BillBoard 200. That sales number beats his own first week sales of "Christmas With Scotty McCreery" by about 9,000 and starts him off well if he wants to hit gold. It is interesting to watch how sales of "See You Tonight" will compare against the Christmas album. Last year Scotty made a number of TV appearances in November and December that helped propel that album to achieve its gold status, and that would definitely help again this year to keep the sale of "See You Tonight" strong. So if he can again sell a total of about 200K in six weeks (i.e. about 150K over the next 5 weeks through Black Friday weekend) that might be all it takes for the retailers to ship a bunch more albums and put him golden again. Last year after the initial second week drop his sales were very steady and then started to increase moving through November. Scotty needs some more holiday promotion! And it will definitely help that country radio is actually starting to play his single more on the the air.  </div>

Book Review: Oslo Architecture Triennale 2013

It is a slim volume that includes a program for OAT (green pages, as seen below) but also a number of essays, interviews, and projects responding to the theme developed by curators Lionel Devlieger and Maarten Gielen of <a href="http://rotordb.org/">ROTOR</a> (with Criticat). In their foreword to the book (spread below) and introduction to the main exhibition, the curators ask: "Has the widespread use of the 'green' adjective resulted in an almost complete erosion of the meaning?"<br /><br />It's a good question that responds to the rampant use of the word "sustainability" and the placement of the adjective "sustainable" in front of just about anything. Reading any architect's description of their project these days is believing that <i>every</i> new building is sustainable. But as <a href="http://www.newrepublic.com/article/113942/bank-america-tower-and-leed-ratings-racket">LEED Platinum buildings are being critically examined as not-so-green</a>, assertions of a building's sustainable principles should really be treated skeptically, arising from the fact the word "sustainability" is used without a shared, professional definition.<br /><br />The curators again ask: "Is it possible to disagree? To be opposed to 'sustainability' while still acknowledging the reality of climate change?" Tapping into the childishness that can arise from using words without really knowing their meaning, the curators pose OAT as a "'time out': A moment to suspend current affairs and practices in order to ponder fundamental, underlying questions." <br /><br /><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-lmOcW5oCQogNiYgpo1oLq7tfNM-mjOPzRixKB2fE6f_puuCrXlu9r1fdqXbYZ2s48sPLbuBET3xQ_3OLbRlp28nDR6MRs2jfKJSkmEjlGWvKQPAMm70PtxR0W8aVvEE22t-bra9T1C5E/s1600/z-3.jpg" /><br /><br />An intriguing proposition comes in the form of Gielen's "Pockets of Sustainability," which asks architects and others to narrow their focus toward determining what is sustainable. An example illustrated in the essay is teak wood, which was specified as reclaimed for the High Line elevated park in New York City. One's first impression may be that using reclaimed teak is good because then the trees needed to supply the same amount would not have to be cut down. But given the desirability of teak for residential decks and other uses, reclaimed teak is often taken from houses in Asia purchased solely for the material. In the process of lining the walls of a bedroom in Bridgehampton, housing and heritage are destroyed halfway around the world. This narrow "pocket" allows people to see just how accurate assertions of sustainability really are. That was after the damn thing ricocheted!<br /><br />At first when he was laying there I thought it looked like that bearing was embedded in his skull.<br />That thing could very definitely cause you to be dead.<br /><br />I can remember using the trusty old <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=wrist+rocket+slingshot&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=32997947185&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3553585761542115517&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_82qjsfx6nd_b">Wrist Rocket</a> when I was a kid and they are not a play toy. As a matter of fact I still have one along with an extra set of the rubber tubes already set up with a pouch that you can buy.<br /><br />We used to fill the pouch up with BB's and go shoot frogs in a pond.<br />Very effective, a quiet shotgun if you will.<br /><br />This is just to remind you that there are still ways to either defend yourself or go on the offensive that do not require gunpowder when circumstances allow.<br /><br />H/T to my dad's pal for sending me the video in an Email.

The walls were lined with extracts, concentrates, and edibles. Rotating shelves containing tubes of different strains of cannabis were neatly labeled with the name of the strain, the price per gram, and the percentage concentrations of Sativa and Indica. My friend asked Reagan what the difference was between White Widow and Widow's Peak.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"The White Widow species produces several different kinds of plants that produce different kinds of effects," Reagan said. "Widow's Peak is usually seen as the height of potential for White Widow. What kind of effect are you looking for?"</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"I want to have really great sex," said my friend, who was visiting the CPC as a carrier of a medical card that gave him permission by the state of Washington to use medical cannabis for the back pain he had contracted from his years as a firefighter. "And I don't want my partner to fall asleep."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"Then you want to blend the Harlequin and the White Widow," Reagan said. "It's kind of heady, but still a little more on the fun side than the sleepy side. The White Widow is 60% Sativa blend, making it more of a daytime thing. The Indica strain is more for joint pain and insomnia."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Washington approved the use of medical cannabis in 1998, and the CPC has been in business in Seattle for roughly four years. Just last year, voters in both Colorado and Washington State <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2012/11/07/news/economy/marijuana-legalization-washington-colorado/index.html" target="_hplink">approved ballot initiatives</a> that legalized the recreational sale of cannabis while instituting regulations similar to those governing the sale of alcohol.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>For example, nobody under the age of 21 can buy it, it's still illegal to consume it in public, and getting caught driving under the influence of cannabis will still result in a DUI charge. It's still not possible for anyone without a medical card to buy cannabis in Washington, but regulations are expected to go fully into effect by spring of 2014.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"As a business that's been around for a long time, Ben and I have been lucky to serve as consultants to state legislators, city officials, police departments, and district attorneys who now have to figure out how to regulate a product that can be used as medicine, fuel, polymer, plastic, and other products that are already regulated," said Jeremy Kaufman, executive director of the CPC. "The entire world is watching [Washington State] and how we're handling this, how we're putting it all together."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>The CPC is still legally classified as a nonprofit medical R&D firm. Kaufman explained the concept of palliative care as the type of care you receive for various ailments and conditions, and said there hasn't been one case that's walked through his doors whom he hasn't been able to help with cannabis.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"A big part of what we do is education," Kaufman said. "We've been able to help treat cancer, chronic pain, loss of appetite, insomnia, nerve disorders, psychological disorders, and a lot of other conditions. As symbiotic, organic organisms, human beings and cannabis have a very unique relationship."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>However, Kaufman still hasn't reclassified his business under the new 502 law that was passed by Washington voters last fall, because the end result would be more costly to customers. Under the new system, there would be an additional 50 to 70 percent increase in sales taxes on top of the 9.8 percent sales tax the CPC <a href="http://dor.wa.gov/content/getaformorpublication/publicationbysubject/taxtopics/medicalcannabis.aspx" target="_hplink">already charges</a>. Kaufman said the additional taxes come from a 25% sales tax any time the product changes hands.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"You get taxed 25 percent when it goes from the grower to the extractor, to the processor, to the baker, to the retailer, before it even gets to the end user," Kaufman said. "The state is seeing the CPC as a model to build off of going forward, so a big part of our education is also showing that there are more efficient ways of regulating cannabis."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Under the new laws, the sale of recreational cannabis is being regulated by the same state agency that regulates the sale of liquor. But because cannabis used to be regarded as an illegal substance, there's no existing case law establishing legal precedent for how cannabis can be sold and regulated by a public entity. According to Kaufman, this means the laws literally are up to interpretation by anybody who participates in any part of the trade whenever a product changes hands, making the process a giant headache for both producers and consumers.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>"At first, there was an immediate flooding of the market, and a huge free-for-all when 502 passed," Kaufman said. "People were opening all kinds of businesses, shipping in stuff from out of state, getting really cannibalistic."</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Obviously, legalizing and taxing cannabis for recreational use would mean a huge increase in state tax revenues. A <a href="http://www.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/pubs/pdf/DrugProhibitionWP.pdf" target="_hplink">2010 Cato Institute study</a> estimated $8.7 billion in new federal and state tax revenue if cannabis were to be legalized all over the United States. Washington State's I-502 alone is projected to generate <a href="http://vote.wa.gov/guides/2012/I-502-Fiscal-Impact.html" target="_hplink">$1.9 billion</a> in additional tax revenue in the next five years.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>But at the same time, as an illegal substance becomes legal, other budgets will be cut. Because of the lack of people being arrested, jailed, and prosecuted for smoking or possessing marijuana, Washington State just passed through <a href="http://www.doc.wa.gov/aboutdoc/budget/docs/Governors2011-2013ProposedBudgetRequest.pdf" target="_hplink">sweeping cuts</a> to the departments of public safety and corrections. While there's a clear benefit in fewer lives ruined from the war on drugs, the budget cuts are nonetheless <a href="http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/how-local-murders-child-rapists-would-be-unsupervi/nYTRH/" target="_hplink">laying off people</a> like parole officers who are monitoring murderers, rapists, and sex offenders who are out on bond.</b></span></span></div><div class="indent"><br /></div><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Washington's shortcomings in the process of legalizing and taxing marijuana shouldn't discourage other states from trying, as Oregon, California, Hawaii, Alaska and Maine are <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/30/marijuana-legalization-states_n_3838866.html" target="_hplink">likely to do soon</a>, but should serve as an example of what went right and what can be improved the next time.</b></span></span><br /></div><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b></b></span></span><hr size="3" style="width: 25%;" /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b></b></span></span><div class="indent"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><em>Carl Gibson, 26, is co-founder of US Uncut, a nationwide creative direct-action movement that mobilized tens of thousands of activists against corporate tax avoidance and budget cuts in the months leading up to the Occupy Wall Street movement. The union had only one staff person there.  </span></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The effects of the strike rippled for a year.  In Detroit itself, sit-downs spread among thousands of local workers, from waitresses to kitchen workers to cafeteria, hotel, and factory workers. By year’s end, chain variety stores, grocery and department stores had been organized in St. Paul and Duluth, Minn.; Tacoma and Centralia, Wash.; Superior, Wis.; and San Francisco.</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">“(The whole trip) was just moving,” said Koumoundouros. </span><span style="line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="line-height: 115%;">“It was so amazing to see labor history alive.”</span></span><br /><br />
