It had already been decided that the 2008 series would include one episode that featured the Doctor without his regular companion and one episode which would focus on his companion and how she would cope without him and so Davies was trying to think of a reason why the Doctor would not be appearing in the companion based episode. He came up with the idea of what would happen if the Doctor had been killed thanks to a small change in his companion's timeline. The inspiration for the tale came from 1998 film 'Sliding Doors' in which the outcome of a woman's life is changed by whether she is able to catch a train on time. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At this stage in proceedings it wasn't known that Catherine Tate would be returning as Donna Noble and so Davies was planning the episode to feature his new companion Penny. In her first episode as the Doctor's companion Penny was to be introduced to us when she was travelling to London with her mother to visit her granddad when they became trapped inside a huge alien dome. To tie in with that, Davies decided to make the small but important decision Penny would face whether she would travel left or right across the city. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">She turns left which leads to her meeting the Doctor and ultimately saving his life, but in Turn Left an alien creature would alter this and make Penny turn right meaning she ends up on the outside of the some, whilst the Doctor is inside and ultimately dies. The episode would revisit other stories throughout the 2008 series and show the implications of what would have happened if the Doctor hadn't been present. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Turn Left was also to mark the first full length episode return of Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper. Rose was the Tenth Doctor's first companion and had been written out of the series at the end of his first series in the episode Doomsday. Even at the time of her character's departure Piper and Davies had discussed her return and Davies had been careful to include references of Rose throughout subsequent series of the show so her presence was always felt not just by the viewer but by the characters in the show too.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Davies asked Piper to return for the last three episodes of the 2008 series which was to be his last full series in charge of the show.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In March 2007 plans for the episode changed when Catherine Tate agreed to return to the series as Donna Noble and become a full time companion for the entire series. Davies was keen for Turn Left to explore how Donna was in her first episode, The Runaway Bride, when she had first met the Doctor. Donna had appeared a selfish, shallow and somewhat vacuous character at first, but her time with the Doctor had changed her and Davies wanted to see what would have become of Donna if she and the Time Lord had never met up.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The life changing moment would now all hinge on whether or not Donna Noble would attend a job interview at HC Clements the firm she was working for in The Runaway Bride when she worked alongside the Doctor to battle the Empress Of Rachnoss. In this version of events the Doctor would die by drowning after flooding the Empress' lair. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At the end of October 2007 Davies dropped the idea of Donna being married with children from the plot. The idea of her having children was to add even more emotional drama to her sacrificing herself  to unravel the alternative timeline, as her children would have ceased to exist as soon as she took her own life.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However by this point Davies was aware that Steven Moffat already had similar plans for Donna in his two parter, Silence Of The Library / Forest Of The Dead and Davies agreed that the idea was more integral to Moffat's plot than to his own.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first draft of Turn Left was completed on 2nd November 2007. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A number of episodes were to be revisited in the story this time however, without the Doctor to save the day, the outcomes to the tales were very different:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Smith And Jones - Martha Jones and Sarah Jane Smith had been killed at the Royal Hope Hospital alongside Sarah's young companions, Maria, Luke and Clyde.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Voyage Of The Damned - The Titanic had crashed in to Earth and wiped out most of Southern England including Buckingham Palace.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Partners In Crime - The Adipose had killed millions in the USA.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Sontaran Stratagem / The Poison Sky - Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones from Torchwood sacrificed themselves to try and stop the Sontarans, but to no avail and Captain Jack Harkness had been captured and taken to Sontar.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Turn Left was doubled banked - filmed alongside - Midnight and The Doctor's Daughter. On the same day, the scene of UNIT taking away the Doctor's body was filmed on Hamadryad Road in the city. The 26th November marked Billie Piper's return to the <i>Doctor Who</i> set. She had left almost two years earlier after recording her final scenes on the two part episode The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the meantine,  the BBC had commissioned an hour and half special centered around her character called <i>Rose Tyler: Earth Defence. The show was to tell the story of Rose's life on the parallel Earth and her work at their Torchwood Institute.</i></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But in the end Davies asked the BBC to cancel the show. He decided that it was unnecessary and would ruin Rose's parting moments in Doomsday.  </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On 26th November 2007 the BBC announced that Piper would be returning to series for three episodes.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On 27th November filming moved to Clearwater Parade, which was the area of Donna's time-jump. It was then on to Nant Fawr Road, for the shots outside Donna's home. On the 28th November it was further location work, Court Road was the scene of the fateful crossroad at the very centre of the story, whilst the Lady Mary Allotments in Roath Park were the location for Wilf's stargazing scenes. On the 29th November Donna's sacrifice was shot at St Isan Road, while Franklen Road was the location used for the scene of Rose warning to Donna to leave London for Christmas. The 30th November saw the cast and crew head back to base at Upper Boat, for scenes in the TARDIS and the fortune teller's tent. This day saw the first use of The Time Beetle, which had been designed to resemble the giant spider which was attached to Sarah Jane Smith's back in the 1974 episode Planet Of The Spiders.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><div class="initial"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">David Tennant's only full day of filming for Turn Left was on 1st December 2007. The day saw the cast and crew filming  in a car park near the Cardiff Royal Infirmary where the Shan Shen marketplace had been set up and then later it was back to  Upper Boat for more sequences in the fortune teller's tent. Also recorded on 1st December was the news item regarding Royal Hope Hospital, which saw the return of Ben Righton as Oliver Morgenstern from Smith And Jones. On 3rd December, the Egerton Grey Country House in Porthkerry was the site for the Nobles' Christmas getaway, whilst shots on the coach were captured at Port Road in Rhoose. The Nobles' house in Leeds was actually a house on Machen Street in Penarth. On the 4th and 5th December scenes of the Nobles' house in Leeds were recorded at a house on Machen Street in Penarth.</span></div><div class="initial"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On 6th December filming began at the Conway in Pontcanna, which was the scene of the bar where Donna and her friends enjoyed Christmas drink. In the evening, Donna's chat with Rose on the bench was due to be recorded at Thompson Park in Pontcanna. But, Catherine Tate had become unwell with the flu, and so it was decided that the scene shouldbe recorded at Sophia Gardens, where the production unit had base. Principal photography on Turn Left finished on 7th and 8th December at  the Panteg Steelworks in Pontypool  where the scenes in the UNIT warehouse were shot. A number of insert shots were also completed on the 8th.</span><br /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As 2008 dawned there was still work to complete on Turn Left . Julie Gardner, the executive producer, had decided that more shots of the phrase 'Bad Wolf' appearing on Shan Shen and the the TARDIS itself needed to be included and so these were filmed on 18th January  at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Extra inserts in the TARDIS, the fortune teller's tent, and the Shan Shen marketplace were filmed at Upper Boat on 24th January. It was on Shane Shen and was drawn to Donna Noble, sensing that she was connected to time and coincidence. When Donna visited the Beetle's familiar, a Fortune Teller, it jumped on her back feeding off the chaos created by the alternative history Donna was forced to relive. Even though it is run by a private enterprise, the government has forced its closing until a budget is passed by Congress.<br /><br />Will it recover?<br /><br />Take a drive south on the Blue Ridge Parkway and you will see shuttered gift shops, restaurants, and campgrounds because no vendors can be found to run these concessions. Imagine running a business that the government can arbitrarily shut down at a time of year that brings in more than 25% of income.<br /><br />Last week, as SWAC Husband and I meandered down the Blue Ridge Parkway toward North Carolina, we stopped at Peaks of Otter for lunch. I had been excited at its reopening this year and even tried to book a room -- albeit on short notice -- for our trip but they were full. That was a good sign.<br /><br />The restaurant at mid-day last Thursday was busy with every window table occupied. The host, a gentleman about retirement age, greeted us and led the way to a table directly in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Abbott Lake and Sharp Top. I joked with him, asking how he <i>knew</i> we wanted to sit in front of the window. He chuckled and said sometimes there aren't enough windows for all the requests to be at those prime tables.<br /><br />The manager, a friendly middle-aged lady, welcomed us and made sure we were comfortable, then took our drink orders. A few minutes later a smiling young waitress, probably twenty-something, arrived to take our orders. We enjoyed a twenty-dollar lunch with a million-dollar view as we watched guests strolling the pathway that circles the lake. <br /><br />A lady arrived alone and was seated at the table beside us. From nearby Bedford, she said she had been busy working at home that morning but decided to drop everything and head to the Peaks for lunch. Maybe she was listening to the news ... maybe she needed a taste of mountain air ... but I'm glad she did it last week because if she felt like an impromptu lunch today, she would be out of luck.<br /><br />After lunch, we explored the lodge, saying hello to the friendly staff and taking photos of the rustic interior with beautiful views. A friendly young lady worked the gift shop. Inside the visitor center, an outgoing gentleman boomed out a welcome and offered directions to various hikes and the bus trip to Sharp Top. Next door in the country store, stocked with camping and hiking necessities, another man about retirement age greeted us with a friendly smile, offering information and bus tickets for the ride to the top of Sharp Top. Running every hour on the hour for those with young children or mobility issues, the bus offered an alternative for those who could not make the trek up the steep trail. We took a short leg-stretcher, not having time to hit the summit either by bus or legs, and then hit the Parkway south as we continued on our trip.<br /><br />Today while listening to news of the government shutdown, I thought about all those workers we encountered last week. They are out of work at one of the busiest times of year for leaf-looking country. It's sad to think that the lodge, restaurant, and all facilities are closed to the public because of the debacle in D.C.<br /><br />Reporter Eleanor Kennedy with the <a href="http://www.newsadvance.com/news/local/article_d9749888-2b17-11e3-a817-0019bb30f31a.html"><i>Lynchburg News and Advance</i></a><i></i> talked with folks at Peaks of Otter:<br /><blockquote>General Manager Robert Peters said most of the lodge’s 72 employees were gone by noon on Tuesday, with more set to depart at 5 p.m. when the front desk officially closed. About half of those employees, like front desk supervisor Debbie Smith, worked for the lodge under its previous operator and were rehired when Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts took over and reopened the attraction in July.<br /><br />“I’ve been through a lot with the Peaks of Otter,” said Smith, who started as a housekeeper there more than 25 years ago.<br /><br />A handful of staff members remained Tuesday to keep the place going, including Peters, Smith and a few housekeepers and maintenance staffers. But today, Peters said, the lodge will be maintained by Peters and one other person.<br /><br />“[The employees] are out of work with no pay until the government figures out what to do,” he said. “It’s bad for the guests, it’s bad for the employees…it’s a bad situation.”<br /><br />Tuesday’s closure came only days after the lodge’s grand opening celebration last Friday and at the start of its biggest moneymaking season, when autumn foliage draws many to the Parkway each year.<br /><br />Peters said the 63-room attraction was expected to be at about 50 percent capacity Tuesday night, 75 percent today and Thursday and completely booked through the weekend.<br />...<br />During that time, Peters said, the lodge likely will lose between $5,000-$10,000 on weekdays and $20,000-$30,000 thousand over the weekends.<br /><br />“It’s adding up quickly,” he said. “This is the money that’s coming in that pays the bills for the rest of the year.”</blockquote>A guest preparing to leave the lodge made a comment that is true across the board for those affected by this shutdown:<br /><blockquote>“The people here have been absolutely fantastic,” said Loudene Riggs, a member of the North Carolina contingent who’s been coming up to the Peaks with her husband since the 1960s.<br /><br />“They have been handed a really rough deal.”</blockquote>End the government shutdown.<br /><br />Here are more photos from Thursday, September 26, 2013, as we enjoyed some time at Peaks of Otter: <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; The pitter patter of little feet

When I was little my mother would often wake me with a cheerful "Diana, it's time to rise and shine! I want to hear the pitter patter of those little feet on the floor!".  I had a terribly happy mother that was always in a good mood in the morning (and pretty much all the time).<br /><br />I have been up since 4 a.m. but there has been very little pitter patter of my feet. I am exhausted since I haven't really slept for the last three years.<br /><br />It's 5:03 a.m. right now. I've been reading blogs the past hour and could happily continue for another hour. But now I really need to move, get my gym clothes on, drive six minutes to the gym, go inside, and really move body.<br /><br />I don't want to move. I want to sit here by the fireplace, in my recliner, with my kitty curled up on my stomach as I type on my laptop. My kitty, Mickey, is the love of my life. White, longish fur, with a red head and red tail and he is Mr. Personality Plus. He never fails to make me smile. I really hate to disturb him (or do I really mean it's "me" that I don't want to disturb).<br /><br />Unfortunately, life seems to be a series of things I'd rather not do. Going to the gym in the dark, cold, and rainy weather is one of them. However, I want that good feeling I get afterwards more than I want to sit here, warm and comfortable, with my best fur friend cuddled up with me. Of course, as I typed that, I thought, "Nah! This is better."<br /><br />Regardless, I'm going to do what is the right thing for me, for my health and for my head...exercise. Lack of sleep is a poor excuse to not exercise. <br /><br />So my little feet  (are size nine feet little?) are going to get moving and get to the gym before it's too late. I have to be out of the house by 5:30 a.m. It's 5:15 a.m. right now.<!----that-->

On Tuesday, when the U.S. Government shut down, 72 World War II veterans from Mississippi <a href="http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/witness-mississippi-congressman-opened-the-barricade-to-closed-wwii-memorial">were scheduled to visit the World War II memorial</a> in Washington, D.C.<br /><br />Because government was shut down, the memorials were closed at a time when the gentlemen were there to visit, possibly the only chance in their lifetimes.<br /><br />And so they visited anyway. In news that flew around the internet on Monday, the veterans pushed through barriers that were then set aside to allow 80 elderly veterans in wheelchairs to see the memorial erected in their honor by the people of America.<br /><br />They ignored park police, pushed aside the barriers, and wheeled in anyway, these Honor Flight vets. <a href="http://www.stripes.com/news/wwii-veterans-storm-dc-memorial-closed-by-government-shutdown-1.244447"><i>Stars and Stripes</i></a> reported one veteran's response:<br /><blockquote>“We didn’t come this far not to get in,” one veteran proclaimed.<br /><br />The scene was both emotional and comical at once. After it was clear they had lost control of the situation, Park Police officials stood aside, telling press that they had “asked for guidance on how to respond” to the breach of security.<br /><br />As 80-something veterans slowly walked around the massive war memorial, Park Police stood quietly to the side, advising other tourists that the site was technically still closed. But they made no moves to stop the wishes of the war heroes.</blockquote>It was the right thing to do.<br /><br />Now let's end this government shutdown.

I tried to convince the girls that we got water in the basement because they never pick up their toys but they didn't buy it.<br /><br />So the plan is to change this room entirely. Something fresh, clean and most importantly dry. Operating System Blues

Fuck me.<br /><br />I have been using Ubuntu for a while now.<br /><br />It has it's quirks, some of which are quite irritating.<br /><br />I have to say up front that I know just enough about computers to make me very fucking dangerous.<br /><br />I have outright killed a few.<br /><br />This current laptop my wife got me for christmas two years ago and I love this thing.<br /><br />Windows, not so much.<br /><br />So this Ubuntu deal has had a pretty steep learning curve.<br /><br />I have no clue how to type commands to make it do things, hell, I looked and can't even find anywhere to even type commands in to begin with.<br /><br />I use it for surfing the web mostly, downloading shit and watching youtube videos.<br /><br />I fuck with it a little here and there but nothing like I had to do with Windows 7.<br /><br />Hate that motherfucker almost but not quite as much as Vista.<br /><br />Anyway, It said there was a buttload of updates, 198 to be exact.<br /><br />Where I think I fucked up is that I just downloaded them all, like ya do in Windows.<br /><br />Big fucking mistake.<br /><br />I have no idea what it did but I couldn't figure out how to undo it and got pissed off and deleted it.<br /><br />Every time I wanted to go to a website a little window would pop up telling me that it was a file type such and so and where would I like to put it?<br /><br />?!<br /><br />WTF?<br /><br />It was FUBAR.<br /><br />I lost all my pictures, downloads, manuals, hard to find bookmarks, the whole shebang.<br /><br />Even better, now I can't figure out how to get the fucking thing situated to reinstall the cocksucker!<br /><br />I have the disk,finally.<br />That took two fucking days, seriously, two fucking days.<br /><br />It seems the downloads are so fucking huge that they won't fit on a cheapie CD anymore.<br /><br />A ton of the old versions are obsolete now.<br /><br />Then they are some kind of ISO file and you have to burn the image and not the files and you need to convert the fucking files with a Bittorent file which you have to download THAT and OH MY Fucking GOD is it complicated!<br /><br />The last time I did this, after I had the CD, it booted up and partitioned the hard drive and loaded everything all by its self, the way it should fucking be.<br /><br />This time? Oh hell no.<br /><br />It's asking me questions about shit that might as well be Swahili as far as I know.<br /><br />I have absolutely no fucking clue what this fucking thing is talking about and giving me multiple options to do things with an operating system install is akin to running an entire herd of very angry bulls through a fine china shop.<br /><br />It is going to get permanently fucked up.<br /><br />The wifes sister is supposed to come over Saturday and wipe this fucker clean, as in all of it go Bye Bye.<br /><br />Windoze and all.<br /><br />Time to start over.<br /><br />I have the recovery discs, four of the sonsabitches.<br /><br />You see, my wife knows me well.<br /><br />When she got the lap top, she bought the recovery discs because she knew from the get go that I was going to fuck this thing up eventually to the point that I am at right about now.<br /><br />I mean Windoze still works even though it has been bastardized by yours truly until it is a smoking pile of 1's and 0's but it still works, I just hate it.<br /><br />I am currently on line using the Ubuntu CD and could do this repeatedly if I really wanted to.<br /><br />Naw. Twin time
