Teacher selected to accompany the African Storybook Project team to Nairobi!

Yolandi showed a PowerPoint while I was there using some course examples that seemed to get the class excited for the task. As a class they also used the Smartboard to collectively brainstorm one example story so they could get used to the terminology like "theme", "character", "plot" etc. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The kids are very excited about writing a story for a genuine audience and purpose.  They have been told that only the best ones will make it to the website - so they are really keen to make sure that their stories are good.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />This is a really exciting project. There were several teachers who, like Yolandi, did a sterling job in coming up with a wonderful selection of stories from themselves and their classes. I am sure the African Storybook team had a difficult time selecting who would be the winner of their incentive prize. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><strong><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Ways of illustrating stories</span></strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We had a number of really excellent stories from teachers who discovered their writing gift within them. Something that fascinated me during this course was the ingenious ways that teachers used to illustrate their stories. I have seen many examples of both corruption and mistreatment of employees.<br /> <br />We are under paid - no benefits - no paid holidays - we need a union to represent our situation... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Warehouse/ Drivers are tired of being over worked an unable to get needed time off for quote no one to cover...<br /> <br />The company is being ran backwards and workers rights are being stomped all over. Pretty sure a vote would go over on first ballot the way people are treated.</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">...an employee will be due in to work at 7:00 am and sometimes won't get off work until 10:00 pm or midnight. The very next day will be due back in at 7:00 am. There are more issues than this but I think over working someone who drives a truck that size is wrong... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">...enough is enough my friends and I deserve to make a decent wage that is why I am asking for the union membership...</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">...and we desperately need union representation...</blockquote><br />

Fast food workers get McDonald’s propaganda about pay cards

It’s insulting enough for fast food workers to get advice from McDonald’s on how to live on their poverty wages. But it’s even worse that McDonald’s budgeting advice includes a propagandized endorsement of fee-laden “pay cards.”<br /><br />McDonald’s put up a budgeting website that has been much reviled for <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/07/mcdonalds-to-workers-dont-buy-gas-heat.html" rel="nofollow">advising workers to take a second job and to stop eating</a>. It also encourages the use of pay cards, which are debit cards that aren’t attached to a bank account.<br /><br />Employees’ already sparse paychecks are bled dry by fees for everything from cash withdrawals to bank transfers to inactivity fees. Racked-up card fees deduct so much from employee wages that <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/01/business/as-pay-cards-replace-paychecks-bank-fees-hurt-workers.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0" rel="nofollow">when the cost of fees are not considered as wages, some workers get paid less than minimum wage</a>.<br /><br />Although McDonald’s Corp. says that franchisees are responsible for payroll policies, over 500,000 McDonald’s fast food workers in America have been enrolled in the McDonald’s budgeting program, hosted on Visa Corporation’s Practical Money Matters website.<br /><br />McDonald’s budgeting advice offers <a href="http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/mcdonalds/paycard/index.php" rel="nofollow">a clear endorsement of the payroll distribution</a>:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">A pay card is an alternative to paper checks that allows you to receive and access your pay on payday electronically – without hassles or check cashing fees. Using a pay card opens up many new possibilities and offers benefits that you just can't get from a paper check.</blockquote>One of the world’s biggest banks, JP Morgan Chase issues pay cards for McDonald’s. Other big banks -- Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup – issue them as well for restaurants and retailers like Walgreen’s, Taco Bell and (you guessed it) Walmart. Those banks received taxpayer bailouts after the 2008 financial crisis. They borrow money from the Federal Reserve at interest rates far lower than fast food workers pay – recently as low as 0.75 percent. So pardon us for being offended that mammoth, profitable, taxpayer-subsidized banks are plundering the working poor.<br /><br />One former McDonald’s employee from northeastern Pennsylvania started a petition asking that <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/mcdonald-s-stop-paying-employees-with-debit-cards-loaded-with-fees" rel="nofollow">McDonalds to require franchises to offer alternative methods of payment</a>. The petition has gathered almost 300,000 signatures in less than a month.<br /><br />Other sections of their budgeting website emphasize that “every day and every dollar make a difference” and warn against payday loans and check-cashing fees. One video explains that: <blockquote class="tr_bq"> Spending the extra twenty dollars means that a couple of hours of your pay is going just to pay for these fees…. That’s a lot of money! Now I am just chilling.  <br /><br />I wanted to introduce you to a few Belviq patients that has friended me on Facebook.  For now, I will only share their first name until I get formal permission to use other data.  I want you to follow them through me as I will hopefully keep posting about their progresses as well.<br /><br />Meet Amy,<br />Amy is from Illinois and she just finished her 15 day trial yesterday.  She reports that she has lost 11 pounds during the trial and seems to be pretty pumped up!!  That is so great and seems to be in alignment with my weight loss during my trial period around about 2 pounds.  She just picked up here 30 day script and, with the coupon, had to pay $155 because her insurance is not covering yet.  She isn't letting that be an obstacle, but she has expressed that she would like her physician write in to see about getting an exception aka an appeal.  <br /><br />Meet Cecelia<br />Cecelia is from the great state of Colorado.  I LOVE Colorado and I have met so many from that wonderful state.  That just says, she's wonderful right?  She just finished day 4 on Belviq and is diabetic.  On day 4, she reported her daily blood sugar result was a 97, which she has not seen that low since she became diabetic.  I think that is really really awesome.  She seems to be really excited.<br /><br />These are just two of the many people I have friended online taking Belviq.  There will be more to come.  I will do check ins so you can read about their progress as well!!!!<br /><br />That's it for today - it's a vacation day for me so I am going to do something productive to not waste the day!!  <br /><br />I would like to end this with a quote from Santos who is on day 12 with Belviq:  "Remember, the fork is not a shovel" LOL  I LOVE IT<br /><br />xoxox<br />Ellie

Premature birth is the most frequent cause of infant death in the US, and the cost to the healthcare system is <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/maternalinfanthealth/PretermBirth.htm" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(52, 163, 209); ">estimated to top $26 billion a year</a>.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">As distressing as all this is, much less attention has been given to the obvious question: why is the US so unwell? Behaviours such as diet, physical activity and even how fast we drive all have profound effects. So do the environments that expose us to health risks or discourage healthy living, as well as social determinants of health, such as education, income and poverty.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">The US fares poorly in almost all of these. In addition to many millions of people lacking health insurance, financial barriers to care and a lack of primary care providers compared with other rich countries, people in the US consume more calories, are more sedentary, abuse more drugs and shoot one another more often. The US also lags behind on many measures of education, has higher child poverty and income inequality, and lower social mobility than most other advanced democracies.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">The breadth of these causal factors, and the scope of the US health disadvantage they produce, raises some fundamental questions about US society. As the NRC/IOM report noted, solutions exist for many of these health problems, but there is "limited political support among both the public and policymakers to enact the policies and commit the necessary resources".</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">One major impediment is that the US, which emphasises self-reliance, individualism and free markets, is resistant to anything that even appears to hint at socialism. Unfortunately, these debates often fail to factor in our health. It may tax less and spend less on social programmes than most rich democracies, but when you add in tax-based subsidies and private social spending, it <a href="http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/social-issues-migration-health/is-the-european-welfare-state-really-more-expensive_5kg2d2d4pbf0-en" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(52, 163, 209); ">ranks as the fifth highest in the world</a>, just after Sweden. What distinguishes the US is how that money is spent. More goes on healthcare – while still leaving many without health insurance or access to care – and less on children, families and the disadvantaged.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Digging into the social determinants of health can be tricky. Social scientists and other researchers are rightly trained not to confuse correlation with causation. But the <a href="http://www.nyas.org/publications/annals/Detail.aspx?cid=79be4d13-c2ef-4d4c-8249-09130fa910e7" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(52, 163, 209); ">evidence on the biology of disadvantage</a> – how social and economic conditions affect our health and survival – is rapidly building.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Following the World Health Organization's 2008 <a href="http://www.who.int/social_determinants/thecommission/en/" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-decoration: none; color: rgb(52, 163, 209); ">Commission on Social Determinants of Health</a>, countries such as Finland, Australia and Canada are taking a "health in all policies" approach that promotes health through public policies in areas as diverse as transportation, housing and agriculture. In the US these ideas have yet to gain much traction.</p><p class="infuse" style="margin: 0px 20px 20px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Moving beyond the dismal headlines generated by the NRC/IOM report, we can hope that the evidence of a health disadvantage in the US is now so compelling that the terms of the conversation and even the political calculus will begin to change. with it?  Not while out and about, I’m talking about after-hours.  You know, when you’re doing things where your hair gets in your mouth and becomes a problem.  Stop, fix the hair, start again… And then at other points it tangles over your face and then it’s a problem again.  It does make a good handle and all, but geez! <br /><br />See, it’s a fairly new issue for us now that there’s a majorly different tone to things. <br /><br />I’ve been sticking it in a sloppy twisty up bun like thing.  It keeps it from getting too tangly and I brush it out before going to sleep. It's not crazy long, it's always in the back bra-strap area.<br /><br />Fast forward to the hairdresser this weekend.  My hair is crazy thick and you just can’t do anything with it so I go with boring. I get a couple inches cut off a few times a year and its fine.  Same hairdresser every time so she knows my annoying hair well despite the gaps in attention. <br /><br />“Why have you been wearing it in a ponytail so much?” <br /><br />Huh? I don’t wear one often because it tends to give me a headache.  “Why?” <br /><br />“Look at the back of your head.  You’ve got tons of broken hair here and it’s getting frizzy.  And see how it’s getting sun-bleached in the damaged area?” <br /><br />Crap.  Now, I know good and darn well how it’s getting broken.  I didn't fess up, of course, that it’s not from wearing a ponytail all day.  I promised her I’d wear ponytails less often and I’d use spray conditioner before putting it up.  So now what?

I got his photo and talked briefly with him, asking how he felt about not being included in the debate and if he hoped to be in future ones.  He was upbeat and said he's working to make that happen.<br /><br />Just down the hall stood Greg Letiecq in the hallway talking with someone so I patted him on the arm as I passed. NoVa was in the house.... <br /><br />Heavy media coverage. Extra tables were brought in after all seats were taken.<br /><br />Someone's cell phone went off at 12:25 on Republican side of ballroom -- it was playing some kind of country song that went on for several seconds while Cuccinelli was speaking -- another awkward moment.<br /><br />Many thanks to Marilyn Shaw with the VBA who does a great job year after year of communicating with the press and including bloggers. The Homestead was gorgeous, as always. Another year, another VBA debate tucked away into the archives.
