She writes of Dietrich going to the studio and running into Banton’s private office shouting, “Feathers! Travis - feathers! What do you think…Black feathers! Now, what bird has black feathers that will photograph?” The black-green tail feathers of Mexican fighting cocks were eventually chosen. Selecting the proper veil fabric took<span style="font-size: x-small;"> as long</span>. Riva reports that when Dietrich finally held up a swatch of “black 41” with its horizontal lines, “Travis let out a wild whoop.” Finally, von Sternberg came to take a look at the completed outfit. There had been concern about his reaction – the elaborate costume would be very difficult to photograph. Though the director  freely admitted that Lee Garmes <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></span>excelled behind the camera, he also maintained  that Garmes did exactly as he was told, "to the extent that I would  always be beside the camera. No picture of mine has been independently  photographed." Dietrich, for her part, supported these assertions. His designs embodied the “Paramount Look” of the 1930s. He never took home a costume design Oscar, no doubt because the award did not exist until 1948, after the better part of his film career was over. Leaving Paramount, Banton went on to work for Fox on films like <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Mark of Zorro </i>(1940), <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Blood and Sand </i>(1941) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Yank in the R.A.F.</i> (1941). He designed gowns on Columbia’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Cover Girl </i>(1944) and for Universal’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman (</i>1947). Boy, did he drink! That’s what ruined him…” said Louise Brooks, a woman who knew firsthand about drinking and ruination. Evelyn Brent, the first actress to work on a von Sternberg/Banton film, recalled, “He was the kind of designer who read the script and would find out who was going to play the part, and worked out the clothes that way.” The feather and velvet hat he designed for her in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Underworld </i>started a fashion trend.<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">M</span>aria Riva knew Banton when he designed for the Dietrich/von Sternberg films. Of him she said that he “had the Ronald Colman look long before Ronald Colman <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">had </i>a look” – cashmere blazer, white flannels, paisley ascot and silk shirt with French cuffs. Dietrich’s long-time photographer John Engstead recalled that the actress didn’t listen to many but would always take advice from von Sternberg and Banton. David Chierichetti has written that it was his work for Dietrich that made Banton’s designs immortal. She learned everything about filmmaking, most especially lighting and photography, from him. The director would be unusually modest when it came to taking credit for 'inventing' Marlene Dietrich. "I did not endow her with a personality that was not her own...I gave her nothing she did not already have. What I did was to dramatize her attributes and make them visible for all to see."</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The Paramount films Dietrich made with von Sternberg and Travis Banton were <i>Morocco</i>, <i>Dishonored </i>(1931), <i>Shanghai Express</i>, <i>Blonde Venus </i>(1932), <i>The Scarlet Empress </i>(1934) and <i>The Devil is a Woman</i> (1935). She and von Sternberg parted ways afterward. When her career foundered he advised her to make <i>Destry Rides Again </i>with James Stewart for Universal in 1939; it was a hit and revived her reputation. She went on to reinvent herself again and again.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Dietrich would work with Travis Banton on two more Paramount films, Frank Borzage's <i>Desire </i>(1936) and Ernst Lubitsch's <i>Angel </i>(1937). I stopped by Grand Central Terminal this morning to check out <a href="http://creativetime.org/projects/heard-ny/">HEARD•NY</a>, a project by artist Nick Cave, with Creative Time and students from the Alvin Ailey School. Here is a slideshow of some photos—the shots are handheld, but I cropped them in Photoshop so the clock face is always in the same place. (ok, I added the 'people')<br /><br />I took a picture immediately and then took a seat. Comfy. I lifted the cushions. Clean. I looked for stains. Negative (with the exception of one small crayon mark).<br /><br />So with all of these good check marks I of course...walked away. I went on my way next store and went about my regularly scheduled errands. But I kept thinking about it. And thinking about it. We need a new couch for our family room. We'd been planning on just getting a <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2012/05/feet-up-or-laying-down.html" target="_blank">slipcovered couch or sectional</a>.<br /><br />Plans change.<br /><br />That night I googled to find out what time Goodwill opened and made a plan to go and get my little honey. Even the biggest snow storm we've had in 30 years wouldn't stop me. I piled my girls in the car, drove 10 miles an hour thru some heavy falling snow and slapped down my $30.<br /><br />Whoop Whoop.<br /><br />She is now <a href="http://news-these-days.blogspot.com/2012/04/take-seat-part-4.html" target="_blank">were I put all my best couches, the garage</a>. And my head is spinning about what to do with her. What colors would you use with her? What patterns? I think I feel an inspiration board coming on. We had breakfast in Cinnamon this morning.  It's a pity the food is average as it is a really nice setting.  We had poached eggs, relish and toast.  Cinnamon could also look at getting a new coffee supplier as their coffee is fairly poor. Probably the thing that annoys me most about Cinnamon is the way they nickel & dime their customers - can you believe they charge €1 more for scrambled eggs rather than poached eggs.  Eggs are eggs as far as I am concerned, there should be no extra charges for the way they are cooked.<br /><br />In better news I see that Door 51 is coming back. Yay!<br />That's where I will be going for breakfast in future.<br />Door 51 had changed into NoodleMee for a short time. You know how when you wake up in the morning usually the first thing you have to do is pee, right? Okay, so you get out of bed and you go do that and then you’re still not totally awake but you’re kind of staggering around the place. Then you go get on the computer to check email, Facebook, blog comments, Twitter and show stats or whatever it is you don online.<br /><div class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Okay, so now you’re starting to wake up a bit and you’re loosening up and things are starting to flow so it’s time to do your morning bidness. You know what I mean, right? Yeah, shit, shower and shave. So, after that now you’re awake and thinking fairly clearly and you wander back into the bedroom to get dressed and whatever and then something catches your eye. You turn to inspect whatever it is and you see that .. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">You bled on your pillow last night! Weird, right? First thing you do is check to see if there is a horse’s head in your bed. Then you think of the obvious places to bleed from. That would be the holes in your head. Ears, nose and mouth. The worst of these would be the ears. Man, if you bled from the ears you are in GRAVE dangers. Nothing good could ever come of that. I mean, that would be your brain bleeding out your ears or some shit.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">But, you think about it for a few and realize it couldn’t have been the ears. You totally would have noticed if there was dried, crusty blood on or in one of your ears. That would just be … well, you would just notice it. It would feel like one of your ears had an earplug in it and no way you wouldn’t have investigated that weird feeling. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">So, now that you’ve eliminated the ears you’re feeling a little better because you’re PROBABALY not going to keel over today. Next you figure it was probably the nose. With your bad allergies nose bleeds aren’t that uncommon. But, then you realized that you blew your nose six times and sneezed eleven times and didn’t notice any big gross blobs of blood this morning, so that’s probably out. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">You guess your gums could have bled and it could have oozed out onto your pillow while you slept with your mouth open and snored up a storm. I mean, that’s conceivable. But, again, bloody teeth would have been something you would have noticed, right? This is getting really disconcerting guys. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">At this point the best thing to do is reassess the situation. Okay, there’s blood on the pillow. Your brain isn’t bleeding out of your ears so you’re probably not in any danger. You didn’t blow globs of blood and snot out of your nose and your teeth weren’t red and bloody either. You didn’t cut yourself shaving before going to bed and you didn’t have any big zits that were ready to pop. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">While doing this assessment of the situation you suddenly realized that you’re standing there scratching an itch on your back just below your neck. And then it hits you! THAT’S where the zit was that bled on the pillow while you were lying on your back <strike>masturbating</strike> sleeping! Oh man!
