Happy Hump day everyone!! Boy am I glad there are only  work days left this week…it’s been rough!! I’ll start my recap with Tuesday. For breakfast I had some seedless watermelon (1 point) on my drive to the groomer with Abby. I ended up gaining .6…putting me at 159.6. But that is still within my goal so I only have 3 more weeks of maintenance left!! One of the guys had his little 11 month old boy with him. So that was super fun to play with him. I even dug out the few toys I have for him to play with…barrel of monkey’s, mr. potato head, and a few books! The funny thing is, before the baby and his dad showed up I was just telling Kyle that I wanted a baby!! And then hey, one shows up!! :) I ended up having a MGD 64 and Pomegranate Mikes Hard Lemonade. I am going to count 4 points for the two drinks. MGD is only 2, but I have NO idea on the lemonade. I just know it’s REALLY good!!! If anyone of you happen to know definitely let me know!! We sat out in the garage chatting away until after 11pm…I was ready for my pillow when we finally came in…that’s for sure!! But I sure do love summer nights hanging out with friends!! TUEASDAY'S STATS POINTS = 24/22 WATER = 96 oz ACTIVITY POINTS EARNED = no exercise  EXERCISE = no exercise Let me tell you it was definitely hard to get up this morning. I wanted to lay in bed just a little longer! But Kyle got me up and going and once again had some watermelon (1 point) on the drive to work. So I just heated up some left over grilled chicken teriyaki breasts for a quick, yummy 5 point sandwich. I didn’t get home till after 6. But Kyle was ready to run right away so I changed and we got going. We took a new route tonight and I felt great during the whole run. We didn’t know the distance, but we did know that it was further than we normally run. When we got home we mapped it out on <a href="http://www.mapmyrun.com/">mapmyrun.com</a> (my new favorite website!!) and it was 5.75 miles!! We were so proud of ourselves. We did it in about 56 minutes. And that is with 2, 1 minute walk breaks. When we got back to our yard our neighbor was out so we stopped over and talked to him for a bit and I had a nice cold Bud Light for 2 points. I had no idea it was taste so good after running…but it SURE did!! After our long run we were ready to re-fuel. So we headed inside and I was craving fruit! Love that!! So I started out this morning feeling great! I had such a positive attitude, ready for work…but that quickly changed. There are some changes going on at work that I am not to fond of…we’ll just leave it at that for now. Hopefully in the end things will work out good! Breakfast this morning was some delish seedless watermelon (1 point) Kyle & I picked up while grocery shopping yesterday. Mmmm!! It was so refreshing to get home to Kyle. He was already in his running clothes stretching out!! So I quickly changed and we hit the pavement for 4 mile run. It took us about 35 minutes and felt great. But boy when we finished my legs got super tight really fast! Any advice on that or why it happened? Catholicity & Apostolicity In Las Vegas

Most people in Las Vegas are new here and don’t know how long they are going to say. But there is a special breed of veteran Vegasites. They have been here for decades and measure their seniority by how close to downtown they can name a street that was still unpaved when they moved here. 30, 40, or 50 years ago is current events back East, but in Nevada, that’s history – especially in a place that has changed so much so fast as Las Vegas. Watching half a century of history unfold anywhere has to lend some perspective. But watching the cultural seismic shift that has rocked Las Vegas – population c. 200 around the year 1905 – means nothing surprises this bunch. Yes, the veteran Vegasites are their own special breed of urban sage. So why am I going on about this rare breed of Western savant? Because the Saturday evening Eucharist at All Saints is heavily populated with Veteran Vegasites. (I don’t know if they would like this title. “Vegas” to a “local” does not mean the City of Las Vegas. It means “the Strip” about which the “locals” are ambivalent. When a local means Las Vegas, we say “Las Vegas.”) In any event, it was my privilege last Saturday to worship with the VV’s of All Saints – a wise and clever crowd with a good sense of humor. Then next morning, the 8:00 a.m. Eucharist was not the norm. It had about 50 people belting out hymns accompanied by Fr. Bede on the organ. Afterward, Linda and I joined the rowdy back row crowd for their weekly breakfast at the Sunshine Café down the street. The early Sunday service was a bit more ethnically mixed than the Saturday group. Then came the energetic larger service (c. 140 people – note: put the past 3 services together and we have well surpassed the 1905 population of the whole city) where we baptized one adult and two little girls. This group was more ethnically mixed than the congregation at 8:00. You might expect things to slow down in the summer afternoon. But quite the opposite. The congregation of Todos Los Santos brought in another 190 people. We confirmed 20 youth and celebrated first communion for numerous children dressed in white, carrying candles, rosaries, and other holy objects. They politely endured my massacre of their language at the Mass. The music was lively to say the least. The congregation worshiped with the most joyful exuberance I have seen in quite some time. But wait there’s more. In the late afternoon, the Holy Child Filipino congregation – 30 of them -- gathered for a charismatic style service with a praise band you wouldn’t believe – piano, drums, two guitars, tambourines, and brilliant vocalists. Lay leadership was front and center for this service. And afterward, we enjoyed a delicious repast of Filipino cuisine. Now you may assume things were over, and for me they were. I am not as young as I used to be. At this point, I was just plumb worshiped out and went home. But no it wasn’t over at All Saints. The next Spanish Language Mass was about to begin at 6:00 p.m. while I loaded up my vestments and other ecclesiastical paraphernalia and “homeward trod my weary way.” But it was one amazing day! The church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. The catholicity (universality) depends on diversity. That’s what All Saints does in this diocese. Thanks be to God. The apostolicity depends on our faithfulness to the apostolic mission of sharing Christ’s love with the world. That is what All Saints is doing by reaching out to newcomers in Las Vegas while keeping faith with those who have sustained this church so long.

This was a first for both of us. I have been working out and running since November, but Kyle just started about 3-4 weeks ago. We’ve been pushing each other along ever since!! Some nights when one of us doesn’t feel like running, the other always gets that one going!! I <3 the buddy system, especially when my “buddy” is my hubby!! I was thinking I would have a big rush of adrenalin and feel better than I usually do running, but that wasn’t the case at all. It was tough. Kyle kept me going the whole way. It was CRAZY!! We didn’t even cross the start line until after about a minute after the gun went off. The first part of the race was really PACKED and we were dodging people the whole way. And we got a good pace going right away. And we’re off!! We were hoping for a time in the 27 minute range, but overall happy with how we did. Dad didn’t get to see us cross the finish line. For one there were thousands of people…and two he had to leave the area for about a minute because there was someone puking, just like me, my Dad has a weak stomach! We met up with Angie, her husband, and Dad after the race for some of the complimentary eats they have! Popsicles, water, Gatorade, apples, oranges, bananas, sandwiches, and so on and so on!!! Nice to get some eats to re-fuel after our first race!! Wow!!! What a crazy week!! After Noah's baby shower last week things just got busier and busier!! The past 7 days have been filled with meetings, birthdays, football games, family, eating out, fun nights in our garage, busy-ness at work, and so on and so on!! But I love it!! I just have to say that Kyle and I are blessed with some great family and friends!! Eating wise has just been OK. I had four bad days in row, but ending up losing 1.2 lbs at WW, which I was surprised to see. Just four more weeks of maintenance and I will be a lifetime member!! Tuesday was DH's birthday. I took the afternoon off and we had a nice time at home, just the two of us! We got Casey's pizza...his favorite and watched a movie, "Taken". Wow...it was intense, but good! We also had some cake and ice cream while watching the Cavs vs. Magic game!! I got him tickets and a hotel room to the Coldplay concert in a few weeks. I think he was pretty excited...but a little upset 'cause he thought I spent too much money. DH is rooting for the Cavs and I'm rooting for the Lakers! Hoping they are the two teams in the finals. DH and I have both been running this week getting ready for our 5K race !! I can't believe it's already here. My hip muscles have been giving me some grief though the past two runs. So Friday we are took the day off to rest and hopefully we'll be ready to RUN!! I'm so excited for my first race. My Dad is even going to come and cheer us on!!!! I’m off to run blogger friends…wish  me luck!!

Two Searches for Faith

John Updike’s In the Beauty of the Lilies is a multi-generational story of search for a lost faith. The Rev. Clarence Wilmot lost his faith in the first decade of the last century under the influence of the atheist arguments of his time. Clarence never found himself in life after that and died a failed door to door peddler of second rate encyclopedias. His son Teddy, an affable duffus, became a mailman in a small town in Delaware. Teddy stayed true to his father’s atheism out of loyalty, yet inconsistently blamed God for not giving his dad a sign to shore up faith and save him from mediocrity. Teddy clearly hadn’t thought things through. But his faith was in Emily, a devout young woman with a deformed foot. Their daughter, Essie, was a true believer because only God could have made someone so perfect as herself. Her narcissistic faith sustained her through the rise and fall of her career as a Hollywood star. It was a convenient faith to shore up her ego, but it made no moral demands as she lived recklessly and brought her son up in chaos. Clark, the son of chaos, was on his road to being a random loser when he joined an apocalyptic cult of the Jonestown genre. His faith was fanatical but with a certain division. He was loyal to the cult leader but was not sure that loyalty to God was the same thing. And he had his reason engaged as a third voice. We don’t know how his final verdict on God, but he clearly came to himself before it was over, and did well. I am not sure what Updike is saying in Lilies, but I think it is that faith is necessary and if we deny it in its reason-rooted sanity, it will pop up in problematic ways. “Even the stones will shout.” But shouting stones are unnerving. I knew Lilies would be a theological novel. It was after all Updike, but I did not expect Frank Waters’ The Man Who Killed the Deer to be such an apt next read. Martiniano was a Pueblo man who didn’t fit. As a boy, he had been taken to the “away school,” then sent home a misfit. He wouldn’t cut the heels off his boots or the seat out of his pants. He would not adhere to the old ways but he discovered that he too needed some kind of faith. Martiniano discovered guilt when he killed a deer the wrong way – wrong in the white way because it was out of season; wrong in the Pueblo way because he did not say the proper thanks for the life of the deer. And so the deer haunted him, created a coldness in his marriage, left him uneasy, restless (Augustine) until he found a faith to redeem him. He tried the Peyote Cult for awhile but one evening the deer came and blocked his way to the Peyote meeting, and he knew that he could go no further on the Peyote road. And so he was all the more trapped. His wife said, "You are seeking a faith . . . . Let us keep faith together. It is our darkest hour." When faith was absent from his heart, it still glowed like an ember in his relationship with his wife, Flowers Playing. Eventually Martiniano paid a penance of being whipped, ostensibly for the Peyote, but really for the deer. Hey all!! It’s been a BUSY past few days!! I’m not going to do a full food recap…but a few highlights!  Wednesday was yet ANOTHER baby shower!! At my house too!! But since I hosted everyone else brought food! The shower was for a friend who had a little boy, Noah, about 6 weeks ago. He is just about as sweet as can be and so cute!! I came home and CRASHED!! But then DH got me up and we ran 3 miles. I made him mad though because about 3/4 of the way done I say “why is this so easy?”! But honestly…I was so surpried that I wasn’t about dying…it was a great feeling…I just wish it wouldn’t have upset him!! He’s ok though…proud of me, but frustrated that he can’t always keep up with me. I tell him though that he started about 4 weeks ago and I started 6 months ago!! So I think he is doing AMAZING!! Speaking of running, I FINALLY signed us up for the Dam to Dam 5K in Des Moines. It’s a week from today!! I totally excited for my first race!! Work was, yet again, busy!! And frustrating…won’t go into the details, but lets just say some people need to keep their noses out of other people’s business!!!!!!! We had a cook out with another couple last night. It was FUN!! We grilled out and hung out in the garage (DH has a TV out there so he didn’t miss the NBA game!). Avec 7788 réclamations en 2008, la Haute autorité de lutte contre les discriminations et pour l'égalité (HALDE) a connu une croissance de 25% du nombre de réclamations par rapport à l’année 2007. Recensant les avancées significatives obtenues (modifications règlementaires, décisions de justice, dédommagements et actions en faveur de l’égalité) et présenté par Louis Schweitzer, son président, le 4ème rapport annuel de la Halde fait apparaître que le premier critère de discrimination reste l'origine (29 % des réclamations) et que le principal domaine de discrimination concerne l'emploi (50 % des réclamations). Par ailleurs, la Halde a commencé à installer un réseau de correspondants locaux qui couvrira bientôt l'ensemble du territoire afin de répondre mieux et plus rapidement aux sollicitations de plus en plus fréquentes.
