It’s also a big victory for workers like <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MarquezBrothersTeamsters" rel="nofollow">Marquez Brothers employees</a> who have faced harsh retaliation since they <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2012/08/woo-hoo-another-teamster-organizing.html">voted to become Teamsters last year</a>.<br /><br />Doug Bloch, political director of Teamsters Joint Council 7, says the trio of laws are the strongest labor protections for immigrant workers in the country:</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Under these laws, immigrant workers who speak up now have new legal protections... That's because these laws put civil and criminal penalties in place for employers who threaten workers with immigration enforcement.</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;">The three laws -- <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/09/teamsters-tout-approval-of-worker-intimidation-bills.html">AB 263, AB 524 and SB 666</a> -- prohibit immigration-related retaliation and clarify that threatening to expose workers’ immigration status is extortion.<br /><br />Marquez Brothers is a perfect example of why these laws are necessary. The cheese company has been <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/marquez-brothers-now-stalling-in.html" rel="nofollow">ruthlessly intimidating workers</a> at its Hanford, Calif., plant since they joined Teamsters <a href="http://www.teamsterslocal517.com/" rel="nofollow">Local 517</a>, refusing to bargain and launching a campaign to get the union decertified.<br /><br />Brother Bloch <a href="http://www.calaborfed.org/index.php/page/legislators_travel_to_hanford_express_support_for_marquez_brothers_workers" rel="nofollow">explains</a>:</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Marquez Brothers is one of the largest distributors of dairy products serving the Latino community in North America. After their workers organized a union, the company responded by bringing in Littler Mendelson, <a href="http://www.littler.com/practice-areas/labor-management-relations" rel="nofollow">a law firm that touts its ability to advise clients on "union avoidance" and "maintaining a union-free workplace."</a> One strategy Littler excels in involves a classic union-busting strategy: delay and decertify.<br /><br />Marquez Brothers used the [decertification] petition as a legal justification to withdraw union recognition from the workers. In the year since they first organized, Marquez workers have faced a constant campaign of harassment and intimidation. In March, workers traveled to Sacramento to testify at <a href="http://www2.calaborfed.org/index.php/site/page/2140" rel="nofollow">a legislative hearing on employer intimidation</a>, only to be followed by company management and Littler attorneys. One of the workers was fired shortly after the hearing. She was one of twenty union supporters fired since they organized. Others have quit in the face of a constant barrage of harassment.</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;">The state’s new laws put abusive companies like Marquez Brothers on notice, calling their behavior exactly what it is: criminal.<br /><br />Teamsters at Marquez Brothers have organized a <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/09/cheese-workers-set-to-continue-Teamsters-fight.html">recertification campaign to beat back the company’s anti-union drive</a>. They filed to recertify the union last month, but that election is on hold pending the reopening of the NLRB after the government shutdown.<br /><br />Bloch says the legislative victory once again puts California on the cutting-edge of pro-labor reforms. And it also shows that when Teamsters mobilize, we win!</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The lobby days and work that many Locals did with their legislators on the ground made a huge difference, along with the high visibility of the Teamsters in the <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2012/10/calif-teamsters-out-in-force-against.html">Prop 32 fight</a> last year and the <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/about-drive">DRIVE</a> contributions we make. This is a real testament to all of our JC7 Locals and members who have stepped up in politics.</span></span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This victory wouldn’t have happened without the brave sacrifices made by Marquez Brothers workers who lost their jobs during the campaign. With their trips to the state capitol and talking to the press, they won strong support from state legislators and showed why these anti-retaliation laws needed to be passed.<br /><br />When companies are able to bully workers on immigration issues in order to suppress their wages and working conditions, it drives down standards for all workers. So this is a big win for all California workers.<br /><br /> And in a time when we find ourselves fighting off anti-worker legislation in so many states, it’s refreshing to score a victory for worker-friendly laws.<br /><br />Way to go, California Teamsters!</span></span>

We have won industry-standard new contracts to protect benefits, preserve retirement, and ensure that Teamsters Local 812 members have the respect and dignity they deserve. During strikes we preserved health insurance and pension benefits and made sure all strikers could return to work proudly or be placed in other companies with the same or better pay and benefits. Those strikes included Pepsi Meadowbrook (1987), Pepsi Newburgh (1989), Canada Dry (1996) and Coca-Cola (2000).<br /><br /><ol><li>In 2011, Local 812 stopped Coca-Cola from closing the Haulage Department, saving 100 trailer jobs that were destined to be outsourced.</li><li>In 2012, through the Political Action Committee of Teamsters Local 812, we saved 200 jobs due to the over $20 million worth of damage caused by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Teamsters-Local-812-Shop-Steward-Page/278183408909689" rel="nofollow">Hurricane Sandy at the Atlantic Ave. Brooklyn facility of Phoenix Beverages</a>. We did it by rallying Politicians to come to the aid of the company. </li><li>In 2013, we saved 120 jobs at Pepsi Bottling Ventures (Long Island) after it was purchased by Pepsi Cola of New York, guaranteeing jobs, hours, seniority and benefits for all. </li><li>Teamsters Local 812 successfully fought and won in court Gov. Patterson's "fat tax" and <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-big-teamster-victory-nyc-sugary-drink.html" rel="nofollow">Mayor Bloomberg's "Big Soda Ban</a>," saving hundreds of union and non-union beverage jobs in New York. </li><li>Successfully fought Coke to reinstate and create merchandiser mileage rights, merchandiser route picking, bargaining unit work, merchandiser work language for pack-outs, drivers' rights, scheduling improvements, and successfully fought labor standards in the warehouse while increasing by over 150 new members in Coca-Cola.</li><li>Successfully negotiated to save over 60 jobs at Oak beverages in Brooklyn after the company announced the closure. We succeeded in no job loss, increased pay for travel, transportation for others by private bus to travel to the other Oak facility. </li><li>Route picking in Anheuser Busch of New York and increase of 40 new union jobs.</li></ol><br />Over the past three years, we have won significant contracts for 98 percent of our membership at a value of over $1 billion. At companies like Coca-Cola Refreshments, Pepsi Cola of New York, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Pepsi Cola Distributors Association, Canada Dry of New York, Snapple Beverages, Good O, Anheuser Busch of New York, Clare Rose, Anheuser Busch of Long Island, Ippolito Distributors, Anheuser Busch of Staten Island, Union Beer, Anheuser Busch in Brooklyn, Boening Brothers, Miller, Yuengling on Long Island, ACG Gas, Long Island, 5 Boros, Westchester and Rockland counties, Borough Recycling, Betta Way Trucking, as well as many smaller independent beverage distributor contracts. These contracts have set the standard in the overall beverage industry across the nation.<br /><br />We have negotiating committees already in place for 2014 contracts at Phoenix Beverages, Lobo Distributors, Long Feng Trucking, Windmill Distributors, Cedar Beverages, Phoenix MTO Recycling, and Oak Beverages. 'The Walking Dead' Season 4 Premiere Sets Up an Interesting Year

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thewrap.com//images/2013/10/walking-dead-season-4-andrew-lincoln-600x399-620x400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="http://www.thewrap.com//images/2013/10/walking-dead-season-4-andrew-lincoln-600x399-620x400.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">It has been a few days since the Season 4 Premiere of the hit AMC drama “The Walking Dead,” and all I can say is that the show is picking up right where it left off.  I know what you’re thinking, the show seemed off a little bit.  While a few fans I have spoken to thought the episode was kind of boring (a thought <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/walking-dead-review-roundup-anyone-else-kind-bored/">shared by The Wrap</a> who bring you the image above), I thought it was a nice set up to the coming tasks that our favorite band of survivors are going to be facing in the coming episodes.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">First of all, “30 Days Without an Accident” had a <a href="http://tvline.com/2013/10/13/the-walking-dead-recap-season-4-water-supply-deaths/">few interesting moments</a>, but the big one is the sickness that seems to be creeping into the prison walls.  So far, the only human casualty has been a younger boy named Patrick, (played by someone <a href="http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/10/the-walking-dead-vincent-martella-on-season-4s-sickness-and-idolizing-daryl.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-walking-dead-vincent-martella-on-season-4s-sickness-and">parents see or at least hear</a> often enough Vincent Martella of “Phineas and Ferb” fame), by that is probably going to be changing.  After all, something is causing people to fall ill and turn.  This could get interesting fairly quickly.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Second of all is Michonne’s search for the Governor.  The guy is likely to pop up when things are at their worst, and while Michonne is pretty well equipped to deal with him it will be interesting to see if the series follows the comic on who actually ends the threat of the guy. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Next, Rick has changed quite a bit.  The whole not wanting to carry a gun issue could very much work against him, because I’m pretty sure Daryl would have not followed a strange (and crazy) woman back to her campsite.  The guy has had a pretty rough go (even among zombie outbreak survivors), but he is an integral part of life at the prison (not to mention the focal point of the show).  His transition and metamorphosis will likely be a key element this season, especially considering there is a foe inside the prison that no one can see.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">In the end though, the Season 4 Premiere of “The Walking Dead” did exactly what it needed to do.  It set up a few interesting storylines and gave us a look at how callous everyone is becoming to the hardships facing their new lives.  The one thing the new hour really did for me though was build on anticipation of what is coming down the pipes for Rick and company, and it seems that arrows and bullets are not necessarily going to be enough.  <o:p></o:p></div>
