Teamsters still marching, 50 years later

Recognizing that much remains to be done, the Teamsters National Black Caucus met in Atlanta recently (see video above) and pledged to rededicate themselves to the struggle. Over the weekend, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/teamsters-march-on-washington.html" rel="nofollow">Teamsters from all over America</a> came to Washington to join the<a href="http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/scenes-from-the-50th-anniversary-of-the-march-on-washington/?_r=0" rel="nofollow"> march commemorating the anniversary</a> of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech."<br /><br />A Teamster sister reminds us that Teamsters were at that historic event: </div><div class="MsoNormal"><blockquote>Teamsters played a very important role in the March on Washington 50 years ago. They were at the forefront of the march demanding better jobs, better education and a decent living for all working men and women. There were Teamsters from all over the nation in Washington, D.C.,  on August 28, 1963. At the time, there was desperate need for economic equality for all. Hello everyone.  HAPPY MONDAY!!<br /><br />I have to say, I am OFFICIALLY over the hump that lead to a crappy 3 weeks.  I had a lot of suggestions for alternative methods for the water retention method.  I am drinking Dandeloin Root Tea - I have to say - I LOVE IT.  I am HAPPY.  I want to thank user binarybit1 on investorvillage.com for the suggestion.  <br /><br />Also, my abdomen doesn't seem to be so imflammed from my liver/digestive issue I was having.  FINALLY.  I blew up like a balloon even though I didn't gain weight.  It was so frustrating.  (I probably lost weight ha).  I knew I had results, but I looked horrible.<br /><br />I have more energy again.  I have been feeling so lathargic over those weeks and this weekend I felt like I was getting my groove back.  I was able to get some things done I have put off because of stamina.  <br /><br />Let this week ROCK and ROLL!  I can't wait until Friday - I woner where I will be.  I HOPE to lose 2 pounds.  I know, small number but remember what I just came from and you will understand.  I already have my doctors office and my bff Karen Mann ready for Friday morning for the official weigh in.  It will be my 10 week weigh in.  <br /><br />I am still keeping my goal of 50 pounds by October 25th where it will be my 25th high school reuinion.  Now you all remember I was not the liked kid in school.  I had very few friends.  I have come a long way and so has my classmates.  I have befriended many over the years.  One specifically was the homecoming queen and fellow classmate, Ashley Martin.  She is the SWEETEST girl ever.   But, I had to tell her, I was coming to reclaim that crown because it belonged to me!!  By the way, I ADORE ADORE ADORE her mom, Mrs. Zellers.  Her mom was one of my most FAVORE teachers ever - and that says alot because I didn't ever speak highly of too many of the educators there.  Oh, there are a handful I love and they all know who they are.  <br /><br />So, I have a poll set up  - Go answer it - I wanna know what you think?????<br /><br />GET READY FOR FRIDAY WEIGH IN!!!!<br /><br />xoxox<br />Ellie

My argument is that this battlefield mindset is the product of a generation of politicians telling police that they're at war with things -- drugs, terrorism, crime, etc. -- and have then equipped them with the uniforms, tactics, weapons, and other accoutrements of war.<br /><br />Over the last several days, the popular online police magazine PoliceOne site has been rolling out a series of opinion pieces in response to my book. As you might expect, most of them are critical, although a couple have been thoughtful.<br /><br />One essay by Sgt. Glenn French was particularly disturbing. French serves as commander of a SWAT team in Sterling Heights, Michigan. French doesn't criticize me for arguing that too many police officers have adopted this battlefield mindset. Rather, he embraces the combat mentality, and encourages other cops to do the same. Referring to an article I wrote here at HuffPost, French writes:<br /><br />“What would it take to dial back such excessive police measures?” the author wrote. “The obvious place to start would be ending the federal grants that encourage police forces to acquire gear that is more appropriate for the battlefield. Beyond that, it is crucial to change the culture of militarization in American law enforcement.”<br /><br /><i>  We trainers have spent the past decade trying to ingrain in our students the concept that the American police officer works a battlefield every day he patrols his sector.</i><br /><br />Note the choice of words. Not neighborhood, but "sector." Although I suppose such parsing isn't even necessary when French just comes right out and declares America a battlefield. Note too that French isn't even referring to SWAT teams, here. He's suggesting that all cops be taught to view the streets and neighborhoods they patrol in this way.</blockquote><br /><br />My emphasis.<br /><br />This is going to come to a head someday in the near future, mark my words.<br /><br />He is right that we  already have cities in this country that have neighborhoods that resemble war zones and this constant escalation of force by the police departments is going to be met with an equal force one of these days.<br />It's just a matter of time.<br /><br />You can bet your homesick ass the day that happens is the day you see the real military in our streets.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
