When Republicans took control of 26 statehouses in 2010, ALEC was emboldened to attack workers as never before. Elizabeth Herman.  Bear with me... it'll make sense.<br /><br />I've always said that training horses, training dogs and training (raising) children are really all the same.  Different incentives and types of discipline yes, but really the same in concept though.  And even beyond the training/raising phase... there's a striking social similarity to people.  So even though this article is about horses, it's still about people.<br /><br />It begins with "I traveled to Arizona to learn more about horses and along the way made some important discoveries about myself."  It then follows her adventure as she works with some horses and relates her experiences to her life.<br /><ul><li>Lesson One – Preconceived notions – what “I know” (and often what I fear) – prevent me from seeing what is happening in front of me right now.</li><li>Lesson Two – I judge myself and others too harshly… I must first connect with and honor myself.</li><li>Lesson Three – Communication is a two-way street, and I need to give it time to work.</li><li>Lesson Four – You can’t listen when you’re talking. Express yourself – then give your partner time to respond. Let him show you how much emphasis you need.</li><li>Lesson Five – (paraphrased to make sense out of context) You need to have a vision and you can create action towards this vision by inspiring others. Others will seek and follow your calm focused energy.</li><li>Lesson Six – (again paraphrased here) Your passionate energetic drive to see results from doing it your way will sometimes work out. Other times the best means to your end is to set that that energy aside and work it out.</li></ul>

Pat McCrory and his cronies who would sock it to working families to benefit big business.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Legislature is considering measures that would limit the rights of voters, slash education spending to the bone and make regular people pay more so corporations can get tax breaks. <o:p></o:p></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Police began making arrests after attendees sat on the floor and signaled they were intending to stay overnight. The General Assembly’s police chief then announced the building was closed and gave demonstrators five minutes to leave. Lawmakers, who usually meet Monday evening, moved up their schedule and were not present when the announcement was made about 7:15 p.m.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This week is a busy one at the Statehouse, as lawmakers are scheduled to wrap up their work for the year. Senate leaders announced they will begin marking up a voter repression bill in committee today, and released an amended version of the legislation that will be considered. We have a lot of great resources to share, most are free, and all are engaging and hands-on.  We'll focus mostly on Life Science, so here are just a few ideas to share:<br /><br /><strong><u><a href="http://www.ohioprojectwild.org/" target="_blank">Project WILD/Aquatic WILD</a></u></strong>--This supplemental curriculum is mentioned throughout the Model Curriculum as a great resource for helping to develop those project-based learning experiences that you'll be seeing more of in the new curriculum.  These K-12 activities can serve as a basis for helping students understand a concept before embarking on the development of their project.   A couple of examples include:<br /><ul><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8P7oaf3e4If7p1_EZIMtVRJH75OLPZIrEJN2efzmRuA_PBiym9LraLpHL7Jt4gMUf2YiNCeR4Yix-IfQZkPtjpWhGdot1iUpldOjo_bz6FuwHARaFgLg47sW6UH-GPe1BXosedLC6kDW/s1600/Project+Wild+Profile+Photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8P7oaf3e4If7p1_EZIMtVRJH75OLPZIrEJN2efzmRuA_PBiym9LraLpHL7Jt4gMUf2YiNCeR4Yix-IfQZkPtjpWhGdot1iUpldOjo_bz6FuwHARaFgLg47sW6UH-GPe1BXosedLC6kDW/s1600/Project+Wild+Profile+Photo.jpg" /></a><li><strong>3rd Grade Life Science Content Statement</strong>: Offspring resemble their parents and each other.</li><ul><li><u>Aquatic Project WILD</u> has an activity called <em>Are You Me?</em> that has the students try to determine which young/immature animal should be paired with which adult animal of the same species.  (this activity can also be used to discuss metamorphosis and life cycles, also in 3rd grade)  Once the students understand that young and adult animals have similar characteristics, a project can be conducted to help observe this in real life. Some examples include:</li><ul><li>The installation of a frog pond on the school property to observe the life cycle and stages of frogs.</li><li>The installation of a butterfly garden on the school property to observe the life cycle of butterflies.</li><li>Starting an aquarium in your classroom to observe fish, amphibians and other aquatic wildlife.</li><li>Logging on to a website for observing wildlife such as <a href="http://ohiodnr.com/wildlife/dow/falcons/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Ohio's Falcon Cam</a> project to observe the growth and development of wildlife and making predictions about what adaptations the young will develop that will help them survive.</li></ul></ul><li><strong>7th Grade Life Science Content Statement</strong>: In any particular biome, the number, growth and survival of organisms and populations depend on biotic and abiotic factors.</li><ul><li><u>Project WILD</u> has an activity called <em>Oh Deer!</em>  that has students simulate the increases and decreases in the population of a deer herd. The effects of such factors as hunting, disease, loss or gain of habitat, and weather can be simulated during the activity to help students understand how and why populations of animals fluctuate within a given time frame.  Once this concept is understood, students can then go on to project such as:</li><ul><li>Researching <a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/ExperienceWildlifeSubHomePage/Endangeredthreatenedspeciesplaceholder/resourcesmgtplansspecieslist/tabid/5664/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Ohio endangered species</a> and their management and what factors play or have played a role in their population status.  </li><li><a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/ResearchandSurveys/WildlifePopulationStatusLandingPage/ForestWildlifeOverview/tabid/19354/Default.aspx#deer" target="_blank">Researching</a> and designing a management plan for a local deer population.</li><li>Participating in a citizen science project such as <a href="http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/" target="_blank">Project Feeder Watch</a> to help contribute data to determine fluctuations in bird populations.</li></ul></ul><li><strong>High School Biology---Ecosystems and Carrying Capacity</strong></li><ul><li><u>Project WILD</u> has an activity called <em>Carrying Capacity</em> where students simulate a herd of animals in search of food.  As the students move through the time period, they must acquire enough food for their herd to survive.  The introduction of predators, habitat and seasonal changes, and other limiting factors can be simulated as well.  Follow up projects can include:</li><ul><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglFfqmM16VZKZdvktuUH4Amg5V0N7MBIBImb355BsOwWUg8K7oO1AuGQDoVRNPVhbljXPHDAGRhlFA8OxljQktpxM_AUZlX89NEFL3iAaRtzQ_VnKs1JD7OabpWy1nXWqKeS6zorL05S63/s1600/242839.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglFfqmM16VZKZdvktuUH4Amg5V0N7MBIBImb355BsOwWUg8K7oO1AuGQDoVRNPVhbljXPHDAGRhlFA8OxljQktpxM_AUZlX89NEFL3iAaRtzQ_VnKs1JD7OabpWy1nXWqKeS6zorL05S63/s200/242839.jpg" width="200" /></a><li>Conducting an experiment on the school grounds to determine what kinds of animals are found there and what makes the habitat ideal.  Then, hypothesize what changes could be made to the habitat that might increase the carrying capacity for a particular species.  Make those changes and determine the results.</li><li><a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/ResearchandSurveys/WildlifePopulationStatusLandingPage/tabid/19230/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Researching</a> an Ohio animal species by looking at historical population data and determining the causes for a population change, if any.</li></ul></ul></ul>So how do you get your hands on the Project WILD curriculum? You'll need to attend a workshop to get the materials.  Workshops are found <a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/Educator_Resources/project_wildplaceholder/workshopsprojectwild_workshops/tabid/5819/Default.aspx" target="_blank">online</a> and most are free!  We can also come to you! If you have enough interest in your school district (minimum of 12 participants), give us a call at 1-800-WILDLIFE and we'll work with you to set a date for an in-service training.<br /><br /><strong><u><a href="http://www.ohioprojectwild.org/" target="_blank">WILD School Sites</a></u></strong>--This program helps schools create wildlife habitat on their school grounds, and then use those habitat improvement projects in their curriculum.  I've already shared a couple of examples of how the school grounds could be used in the examples above.  We have several ways that we can help your school:<br /><ul><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZo2I0kvUZJbnG66jKOl5TeGrepVa0Du5w1KqM6thyphenhyphen6U71ISfmJxehtZS2fctYh2xmvGMxmX2WMlpWw-gATvjS3sngaszW-W94OdYIxtD4jRdWXPC-XIgNvNWye_0AHM3ynwO8LPFPxg_q/s1600/WSS%2520sign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZo2I0kvUZJbnG66jKOl5TeGrepVa0Du5w1KqM6thyphenhyphen6U71ISfmJxehtZS2fctYh2xmvGMxmX2WMlpWw-gATvjS3sngaszW-W94OdYIxtD4jRdWXPC-XIgNvNWye_0AHM3ynwO8LPFPxg_q/s320/WSS%2520sign.jpg" width="235" /></a><li><strong>Consultations:</strong> Our staff can pay a visit to your site, walk the property with you, and help you determine good locations for projects such as prairies, butterfly gardens, bird feeding station, ponds, rain gardens, and more.  We'll bring a wealth of resources to share with your staff, including sources of funding, resource materials, and more.</li><li><strong>Professional Development Workshops:</strong> We can provide training to the entire staff or a select group of teachers, your choice.  The workshop can be as long as you'd like it to be, although we recommend a full day.  Workshop content includes activities to help you plan your site, how to utilize what you already have, design elements and suggestions for new features, grant information, and resources for your lesson planning.</li><li><strong>Grants:</strong> We distribute 40 grants each school year for $500 each to schools that have gone through Project WILD, Aquatic WILD, Science and Civics, or Growing Up WILD.  Other requirements include the inclusion of students in the development process as much as possible, at least 50% of funds must go to "on-the-ground" habitat improvement, and you must demonstrate how the habitat improvement projects will be incorporated into the school curriculum.  Grant applications are accepted between September 1st and May 31st each year.</li><li><strong>Certification: </strong>Once your school property is in a state of active use, you can fill out the <a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Portals/9/PDF/wildschoolsiteapplic.pdf" target="_blank">Application for Certification</a> to become one of over 130 Certified WILD School Sites across the state.  Just submit an application, we'll come out and inspect the site, and then return at a convenient date to conduct a formal dedication of your site.  This dedication can be as large of a ceremony as you'd like.  It's a wonderful PR opportunity for your district and to help showcase all the hard work and outstanding things you're doing at your school.</li></ul><strong><u><a href="http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/Educator_Resources/educationmaterials/tabid/23452/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Field Guides and Other Resources</a></u></strong>--If you don't know a frog from a toad, or a warbler from a sparrow, we have the materials for you! was a little worried

I learned over a few days that there is a difference to feeling hungry and your tummy growling.  Every now and then, I "thought" I was feeling hungry.  I was a little worried at first like "Am I already building tolerance to Belviq?"  What I very fastly discovered was that my tummy was growling and when I would eat, I still couldn't eat much at a sitting.  So, that told me 2 things:  1, the Belviq is still very much working effectively as it should and 2, that my tummy is still adjusting to the much smaller amounts of food vs. almost quadruple the amount at a serving.  So, your tummy growls because its just not used to the little amount.<br /><br />This is only occasional but what I find helpful is eating fruit or vegetables for a small snack and my tummy is happy and so am I.  <br /><br />So for those just starting on Belviq, don't get alarmed if this is happening to you.  It's a good thing.  You not only have to train your mind to eat better, but you have to train your tummy to the new way of food digestion.  It took us years to get to where we are today, so be patient with yourself.<br /><br />I'm still losing and still excited.  I'm not posting an official weigh in until August 2nd which is 2 weeks after my 4 week weigh in.  Because I use my doctors scale and we video it, I want to keep the integrity.  It's so easy to say, "Oh, I lost 25 pounds" but with the amount of followers on my blog, I have to have the back up so NO ONE can say, "Oh, she really didn't lose it" or say "she's being paid to blog". <br /><br />I'm also enjoying my subscription to emails, meal planning, tips, etc. from KickStarter60.  If you haven't tried it, you should.  Even if you don't have much to lose or lose any at all, it is really a great tool to help you keep in line nutritionally.  <a href="http://www.kickstarter60.com/">www.kickstarter60.com</a><br /><br />I hope you all have a wonderful day!<br /><br />xoxox<br />Ellie

These <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/01/fix-debt-is-full-of-crap.html" rel="nofollow">attacks come from radicals</a> who want to dismantle public institutions, like pensions, that don't benefit greedy billionaires. Don't listen to them.<br /><br />Listen, instead, to economist <a href="http://www.cepr.net/index.php/blogs/beat-the-press/unfunded-pension-liabilities-are-1-trillion-not-38-trillion-never-take-anything-in-a-washington-post-editorial-at-face-value" rel="nofollow">Dean Baker</a> recently called out the Washington Post for making the nonsensical claim that state and local pensions have unfunded liabilities of $3.8 trillion. Baker notes the funds are basically okay: </div><blockquote class="tr_bq">...the $3.8 trillion figure was an estimate of total liabilities, not unfunded liabilities. Since the pensions have $2.8 trillion in assets, their unfunded liabilities are just $1 trillion. Or, to put this in terms that may be understandable to Post readers, the unfunded liabilities are 0.22 percent of projected GDP over the next 30 years. And, as I noted in my earlier post, most state and local governments are already funding at levels that are consistent with making up this shortfall so there will no required tax increases or spending cuts to meet these future obligations.</blockquote><div>It shouldn't be a surprise, then, when Brother Brian Aldes, secretary-treasurer of <a href="http://teamsterslocal320.org/index.cfm?zone=%2Funionactive%2Fview_article.cfm&HomeID=297639&page=Brian27s20Blog#.Ue28svsp5Gs.twitter" rel="nofollow">Teamsters Local 320</a> in Minneapolis, brings us some good news about Minnesota public employee pensions. If you’ve heard the bad news coming out of Detroit you might have retirement on the mind. There’s certainly bad news in Detroit for city workers and retirees, but I'm happy to report there’s also some great stuff in the news today for Minnesota. </blockquote><blockquote>The latest report on Minnesota public employee pensions have all three funds (MSRS, PERA and the Teachers’ Fund) with an investment return of 14.2 percent for the fiscal year that just ended, and it was much higher than expected. </blockquote><blockquote>According to the <a href="http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_23695107/minnesota-public-pension-funds-report-unexpected-gain-investments" rel="nofollow">St. Paul Pioneer Press</a>: </blockquote><blockquote>"The investment return is crucial for the pensions because, historically, investment gains have accounted for about 70 percent of their revenues, helping reduce taxpayer costs. Returns have been rocky in recent years, although the average over the past decade has been 10 percent [investment return]." </blockquote><blockquote>What this year's strong investment return demonstrates is the improved funding ratios and how the total unfunded liability for all three plans is expected to drop. This is positive news and Senator Sandra Papas (DFL-St. Paul) who chairs the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement (LCPR) told the Pioneer Press that she is “cautiously optimistic” about the funds’ future. </blockquote><blockquote>Meanwhile in Detroit a judge ruled that Michigan Governor Snyder’s action to place Detroit in bankruptcy had violated the state’s Constitution because the move could cut the pension benefits of retired public employees. The judge said pensions were protected under state law, and issued an order that the bankruptcy filing be withdrawn. Gov. Snyder is challenging the judge’s order in the state’s Court of Appeals. If the bankruptcy is allowed to continue it will enable a bankruptcy judge to impose further city-wide budget cuts, void any and all union contracts, and target the pensions owed to 21,000 city retirees and 9,000 active workers. </blockquote><blockquote>What is happening in Detroit is simply a tragedy, but for public employees in Minnesota things are looking up, and for that I am grateful!</blockquote>

Is Cardio Better Before Weights Or Afterwards?

This is a question on the lips of many gym members around the world who are trying to figure out how to lose weight. Yet despite the conclusive proof which is already available, it remains something which confuses most people.<br /> <br /> Today you will discover the facts behind the answer to this question. <br /> <br /> Conflicting information is everywhere, particularly on the gym floor. What works for one person might not work for the next person and this causes confusion. Most people falsely believe that doing aerobic activity after a training session is a superior way to increase fat loss and lean muscle growth. Today you will discover the answer based upon scientific research, rather than gym opinions.<br /> <br /> Pre workout aerobic activity certainly sounds better when you consider hitting the gym with your legs already zapped from cardio, of course, but the latest scientific research on the subject puts a whole different spin on this topic.<br /> <br /> When there is conclusive scientific evidence on a subject available, you have no reason to follow myths or train with a trial and error approach. During cardiovascular exercise and resistance training, the human body increases the release of two very significant enzymes which can make or break your results to a certain degree. The first of those is m-TOR, which we will be looking at first.<br /> <br /> You may have seen that name, m-TOR, plastered across the pages of muscle building magazines in the past. That's because it is the enzyme your body releases in increased volume following a tough workout. It is the enzyme which is considered the 'key' to 'turning on' the post workout muscle building recovery phase. So if you are trying to build lean muscle in the gym (and who isn't?) then it makes sense to take increased m-TOR release very, very seriously. Ideally, you want to be in a state of increased m-TOR release for as long as possible after each and every workout.<br /> <br /> When you do cardiovascular activity the body releases an enzyme called AMPK instead. This helps the body adapt to aerobic exercise.<br /> <br /> Here is the real kicker - AMPK release blunts m-TOR release significantly!<br /> <br /> So now you should be beginning to see that the last thing you should be doing following a hard resistance training session is jumping on an upright cycle and peddling for an hour! In doing so, your body will be forcing itself to wipe out much of the increased m-TOR release you caused by training with weights.<br /> <br /> Further studies have since gone on to reveal that pre workout cardiovascular activity does not zap your muscles of strength either. It impacts only the muscles which are involved during the cardio itself, so for example a bike would impact your legs. To get full benefit from increased m-TOR, common sense would decree that you should be avoiding post workout cardio and to avoid ruining your ability with weights on leg days simply drop cardio from your routine here.<br /> <br /> Learning how to lose weight can be a confusing path, with many conflicting opinions often causing confusion along the way.
