In search of a good doughnut!

<span style="font-size: large;">Here in Ireland we have neither Krispy Kreme nor Dunkin Donuts.  This means that I am constantly on the search for a good doughnut.  </span><br /><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">In my local Spar a Tim Horton coffee shop (which i believe is Canadian) has just opened. I spoke up against my former pastor telling people that God would poke holes in their pocketbooks if they didn't tithe, they God would "blow it all away" if they didn't fork over 10% to their church, and that Americans  should get ready for God's judgment for all those pesky non-tithers sitting in pews.<br /><br />We're heading into the fall when for some reason preachers seem to think is the season for beating the sheep with abusive tithing messages. Go back and look at my <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html" target="_blank">blog articles in October 2010</a> for the worst of the worst - including <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010/10/ed-young-breaks-new-tithing-ground.html" target="_blank">Ed Young's infamous attempt to get checking account numbers</a>, after telling everyone that if they don't "bring the tithe" they might as well <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010/11/ed-youngs-tithing-sermon-show-me-money.html" target="_blank">stop coming to church</a> and wasting his time (Ed's) and God's time.<br /><br />So that brings me to right now, August 2013, in Jacksonville, Florida. The largest church in our city, <a href="http://celebration.org/" target="_blank">Celebration Church</a>, pastored by Stovall Weems, has been not just preaching the tithe as a requirement for Christians to be blessed by God and avoid calamity - which Stovall does preach - but they have moved now in the direction of "prosperity gospel" preaching.<br /><br />The latest proof of this was on Sunday August 18th, when Stovall Weems introduced Robert Morris of Gateway Church to the Celebration congregation to <a href="http://source.celebration.org/messages/100" target="_blank">preach a sermon on how to make a "Financial Comeback"</a>.<br /><br />Morris' sermon wasn't just another of his pleas to tithe to avoid financial calamity - it went beyond that in being a plea to give money because Jesus is waiting for you to give it to him FIRST before even your family gets it, but that Jesus will mysteriously give it BACK to you later. Like in many of his sermons Morris purports to speak directly for God, telling people what God says.<br /><br />But sadly, Stovall has taught the same prosperity gospel stuff as well, as I will show this week. And this is not the first time I've addressed the teachings of Robert Morris. He teaches tithing is a must to <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2011/06/robert-morris-issues-money-back.html" target="_blank">avoid divorce, and losing your job, losing your kids</a> - and he <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2011/11/robert-morris-i-check-tithing-records.html" target="_blank">checks tithing records of those who would date his daughter</a> ("...why would I give my daughter to a thief?")<br /><br />In the next posts I will put some video clips of this Morris sermon up he preached at Celebration, along with some clips of recent Stovall Weems sermons, to show that this church has now moved in the direction of prosperity gospel: that if you give money to the church, God will miraculously give it back to you. <br /><br />What makes this so particularly sad in my city is that Celebration Church is filled with so many sincere - yet gullible - young Christians, listening to a handsome, hip preacher who has a gift for persuasive speaking. It is done in the venue of a rock concert, complete with fog, bright lights, and extremely loud music, and beautiful people on stage. My hope in shining a light on these teachings is to help these young Christians not be duped by a phony message wrapped in a beautiful, cool, hip package.<br /><br />And it is a message that will hurt them financially, and ultimately hurt them spiritually when they realize they've been duped by a masterful marketing strategy.<br /><br />I know members of Celebration Church will come here and tell me all the wonderful ministries of Celebration Church and who am I to criticize. I know, I get it. I'm not here to say Celebration is all bad.<br /><br />But the truth must be told for the good of the people in the churches - not just the young people at Celebration, but young adults at OTHER churches in Jacksonville who will be drawn to Celebration's glitzy, rock-style venue and hip pastor. She sold the building two years ago to Plaza Aztec and retired. But retiring is not in her DNA. In what she calls her newest adventure, she opened Market On Main in downtown Waynesboro, and says she has "expanded 'the biggest little specialty shop in Waynesboro' to include fresh local foods, bistro sandwiches, artisanal cheeses plus an array of wine and beer accessories, candles, and specialty gifts." As Linda says, "Virginia is for wine Lovers," and "Virginia is for craft beer Lovers."</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">My friend Barb and I met up at the Market Monday afternoon and ordered lunch to go. If you call ahead, they will have it ready when you arrive. We had originally planned to eat in the small dining area that boasts three tables and a bar in the window overlooking Main Street but, since it was such a beautiful day, opted instead to get it to go and eat in the nearby Constitution Park on the South River. The administrators are afraid that they'll 'get in trouble with the state' if they see she's not using any. Give me ideas to help"</p></blockquote> <p>So, that's it...no coaching... no advice...no help - just BAM - you're going to teach a younger grade even though we know you're the best AP lit teacher we've ever seen.</p> <h3>It is always about what technology helps you DO not technology itself</h3> <p>If you read my blog, you know that I love and enjoy technology and using it with my students. But I find this repugnant and ridiculous. </p> <p>Yes, we need to help every teacher use technology but it is about what technology helps you DO. </p> <p>Does every class use paper? Did we judge classes that used less paper as being substandard? There are ways to use technology in AP literature but it is AP literature not AP tech-ture for goodness sakes. </p> <p>I could require every teacher to use an ipad, but if she uses it to hit her students on the head - does the mere presence of ipads mean it is put to good use? A teacher without ipads who doesn't hit her students is better than a student with ipads who leaves them with bruises. Are we honestly going to let the presence of an electronic device determine the merit of a teacher? </p> <p>I'm hurrying up as best I can to finish my new book <em>Reinventing Writing</em> for just this teacher. But in the meantime use technology where it makes SENSE.</p> <h3>Mandates sometimes suspend good common sense</h3> <p>This is the thing that bothers me about state mandates. Sometimes people take things and use them as an excuse to disengage their brain from their eyes and blindly misinterpret the intention of what is happening. Yes, we all should be using technology. To me, the larger question is -- looking at a school -- will the student come out technologically savvy? Will they be fluent? Can they invent and create using it? Can they be a lifelong learner with technology?</p> <p>Even more important - HOW are kids using technology? </p> <p>Are they using technology to solve problems or are the computers basically there to program kids?</p> <p>You know it is true. Some schools have technology all over and not one single ounce of creativity. Would that "rank" well with "the state?"</p> <p>And here, you have a teacher using tons of creativity and shunning technology with an almost 50% pass rate in her AP class (far above the percentage of other teachers at that school from what I hear) and yet, somehow the fact she isn't using technology is a bad thing. Does the pass rate mean anything?</p> <p>Honestly, if they want kids to use technology - they should buy them all ipads and get it in their hands. It is the school's fault not the teacher's if they aren't putting it in the hands of kids.</p> <h3>6 Aspects of Visionary Technology Leadership</h3> <p>Technology is important. It is something all students should be using. But the people at the top need to be visionaries about:</p> <p>1- Giving technology access to all students.</p> <p>2 - Adequately training all teachers about the effective use of technology (not just buying subscriptions to the latest drill and kill software package and calling that enough).</p> <p>3 - Creating an environment where people can experiment and try new things without fear. (and where they can publish and share with a wider audience and connect and collaborate with other classrooms as well)</p> <p>4 - Having a vision a school is supposed to be - conveying that vision and owning it with their decisionmaking.</p> <p>5 - Supporting great teachers and helping them continue to thrive in a new era.</p> <p>6 - Supporting students and keeping a focus on them.</p> <p>I'm sure that those of you who study this for a living will think of more.</p> <h3>Arbitrary Decisionmaking often leads to a Sorry State</h3> <p>I am just angry that such foolish, ridiculous decisionmaking would be made and that technology would be a hatchet to remove a great teacher from a classroom where she and the students are successful. Arbitrary decisionmaking like this is what has gotten education into trouble through all these years.</p> <h3>Wake up teachers, and find good uses for technology in your classroom</h3> <p>Technology is more important than ever and I hope this will also be a wake up call to teachers. If you could see your administrators doing this, it is time to do something that makes sense. Use technology where it works and will help you improve learning -- but find some place - I'm sure there is a place where it can help you teach. It is worth the effort. </p> <h3>The Electronic ruler rises?</h3> <p>Some will applaud this day that technology is being used as a ruler to measure teaching -- but honestly, teaching is the only ruler by which we should measure teaching. </p> <p>What are kids learning? What are they doing with what they learn? What are they creating? Can they solve problems in this field of study? Are they learning the habits that will help them be successful in their future?</p> <p>Teachers - you can do this. Learn about technology - Twitter is a great place to start. Find the hashtag that fits with your field of expertise. You can find ways to integrate it into your classroom. You can't do everything but you can do something. It is important to do it for the kids. But realize that if you don't, it is going to have a very real impact on some of you. I can write all day long but it won't impact the back rooms where such arbitrary mandates are concocted and one such thing may come rolling your direction. But I've always found the best things I do in my classroom - I do out of love for the kids not fear for my own career. Good luck and get at it. You rock, teachers. You're important! It's a go for NFL games this fall at Hull's Drive-In in Lexington. Here's the latest from them:<br /><blockquote><b>NFL Games at Hull's</b><br />There has been a lot of excitement about the upcoming football season and Hull's Drive-In showing Sunday and Monday night games on the big screen. While we are excited as well, we want to make sure this is a success so here are few things to keep in mind if you're coming out to the games.....<br /><br />1. Admission is FREE!!!!!<br />2. We strongly encourage you to visit the concession stand and buy your food there instead of bringing outside food in. This is how we are paying for the football games to be shown, help us keep them on the big screen and support your concession stand. <br />3. We will be doing a 50/50 raffle each night and that will be drawn the beginning of halftime. <br />4. Donations will also be accepted at the gate and in concessions that will go to helping make the football venture a success. <br />5. Our alcohol policy is the same as it is for movies.......please just be responsible and mature and we won't have to enforce it!!!! Catch my drift!!!!<br />6. GLASS BOTTLES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED NO MATTER WHAT IS IN THEM!!!!!!<br />7. We want everyone to have a good time. I was the same awkward and shy nerd that I had always been. In fact my freshmen year was incredibly boring. I really didn’t do anything much at all. There were none of the big parties that I expected to be attending every weekend. None of the babes hanging all over me that I expected. And when my dorm had some kind of party or dance I would only go and hang out for a little while and then leave. Alone. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />My roommate was a really strange guy. He was a junior architecture major and wasn’t around all that much. We got along great though. Of course, when you only actually see each other once a week, it’s easy to get along.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />I didn’t spend all my time in my room watching my little black and white TV though. We had a pool table and ping pong table in the basement. So, that is where I spent most of my weekend nights. Oh sure, there were a few weekends where I would hang out over in another dorm with some other dudes and we would drink beer or anything else that somebody got his hands on and watch a movie (porn). #Thuglife<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />Sometimes while I was playing ping pong with the other anti-social nerds in the basement at 2 a.m. on a Friday night one of the cool guys with his cool girlfriend would wander through. I always loved that “oh look ... that poor loser is playing ping pong on a Friday night” look from those girls which always made me feel good about myself. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />Most of the fun I had at college, and the closest things ever got to the college experience that I had envisioned, happened in my second year. That’s the year I met Big J, Little J, and S. Those are the guys that I went on the road trips with. And the guys that I actually got out and went to parties and other social functions with.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />After that year Big J and Little J both moved back to California because it was too boring in Arkansas. I should have moved there with them. Then S got married about a year later. Actually he and his girlfriend dated for almost 12 months, then got married and THEN she moved out less than three months later. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />For me college ended up being a colossal waste of time and money. I have a degree in Human Resource Management that has proven to be even more useless that you can imagine. It’s my own fault though because I didn’t stick with a major that I enjoyed and excelled in. I started out as a political science and history major and stupidly switched over to HR. It won’t.
