Of course, Richie fails to heed the slightest trace of common sense, branding<br />himself as the biggest sucker of all time: an attitude without which we wouldn't have<br />this film. Which might have been a good thing.</span></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Runner, Runner</i> fits that bill.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The script, credited to Brian Koppelman and David Levien, is absolutely ludicrous. It opens with a behavioral howler and just gets worse, its central character — our <i>de facto</i> hero — ignoring common sense to a degree that makes it impossible to sympathize with him. Frankly, he fully deserves the consequences that he eventually struggles so hard to escape.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Let him hang, and move on.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But no, that would defy the revenge scenario that Koppelman and Levien so clumsily stitch together, from one bewildering moment to the next. Director Brad Furman, perhaps recognizing the weak hand he has been dealt, does his best to dazzle us with Costa Rican scenery and the wretched excess of an opulent casino gaming community. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Indeed, cinematographer Mauro Fiore lingers so long on such a setting, when our young hero initially enters this hedonistic realm, that I began to wonder if Furman had forgotten what to do next.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Runner, Runner</i>, set in the world of Internet gambling, is an echo for Koppelman and Levien. They made their bones back in 1998 with <i>Rounders</i>, a slick suspense thriller also involving high-stakes poker and a protagonist — in that case, Matt Damon — who gets in over his head. Clearly obsessed with gamblers and intricate stings, Koppelman and Levien subsequently created the short-lived TV series <i>Tilt</i> and brought the Danny Ocean series to a satisfying conclusion with <i>Ocean’s Thirteen</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Things since then haven’t been nearly as satisfying, with two failures — <i>The Girlfriend Experience</i> and <i>Solitary Man</i>, both in 2009 — that were outside their comfort zone. No doubt Koppelman and Levien viewed <i>Runner, Runner</i> as a means of returning to what they know best.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well guys, they say you can’t go home again ... and that’s certainly the case here.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake), a Wall Street up-and-comer who lost everything when the market crashed, has started over as a Princeton grad student. Lacking a respectable means to fund his education, he has been earning a commission as a shill for Midnight Black, an enormously successful Internet gambling site.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alas, Princeton’s dean (a small but well-played role by Bob Gunton) thinks little of Richie’s clandestine operation, and orders it shut down. With no other means of earning tuition money, Richie goes “all in” one night by yielding to the very temptation that he has professed, during his smart-alecky narration, to be smart enough to avoid: playing online poker at Midnight Black. Naturally, he loses everything.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But suspiciously.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><a name='more'></a><br />  <div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Richie knows poker odds, and during his all-nighter determines the “tells” of his online opponents, at least one of whom made impossible bets. A subsequent mathematical model of the night’s activities point to certain chicanery. (Gee ... ya <i>think?</i>)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We momentarily pause, to contemplate the bone-deep stupidity of <i>anybody</i>in the real world who would believe, for a moment, that these online gambling empires <i>don’t</i> cheat. How the hell would you ever know?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But I digress.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most people would chalk up this experience as a valuable lesson learned, but not our Richie. He immediately hops a plane to Costa Rica — we can’t help wondering how he funds this trip — in order to confront Midnight Black’s owner/tycoon, Ivan Block (Ben Affleck, appropriately smooth and smarmy). Mind you, Richie never has been to this country, knows not a lick of Spanish, and has no six-degrees-of-separation connections to Block.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And yet, within a single day, he crosses paths with Midnight Black’s ultra-sultry COO, Rebecca Shafran (Gemma Arterton), and then wangles a face-to-face with Block himself.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A-<i>ma</i>-zing.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Like I said: It’s a movie.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Block, impressed by Richie’s savvy — and by the fact that our hero kept his accusation on the low-down, rather than blabbing the details all over the Internet — immediately offers the younger man a job. (You’re just the sort of guy I need at my side, blah, blah, blah.) Richie, unable to believe his good luck (!), immediately accepts ... naively taking Block at face value, and convinced that he’s made a new best bud.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As introduced, Richie is too smart to be this stupid.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Granted, the world is full of stupid smart people, particularly when gobs of cash are involved. But fiction has the added responsibility of <i>persuading</i>us that such behavior is reasonable, given a set of circumstances, a task at which this film fails completely. Koppelman and Levien’s script isn’t sufficiently thought out — it’s an overblown pot-boiler, at best — and Timberlake’s limited acting chops aren’t able to fill in the blanks.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, we go with the flow: Richie becomes Block’s apprentice because, well, the script <i>says</i> he does. And Richie stays at his new mentor’s side, despite increasing evidence that the sailing, well, isn’t quite as smooth as Block keeps insisting.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For openers, Richie soon gets braced by FBI Special Agent Shavers (Anthony Mackie, unpleasantly shrill), who wants Block for racketeering, extortion, bribery and probably a few other niggling charges. Trouble is, Costa Rica is beyond Shavers’ jurisdiction — hence no chance of extradition — and Block has the moolah to buy all the local cops and judges he might require.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Naturally, Rebecca is too much of a stunner for Richie to ignore, despite the fact that her relationship with Block seems more than purely professional. (All the willing female flesh on hand, and of course Richie wants the babe that common sense insists he shouldn’t pursue.) And, just as Richie never questions Block’s slick patter, he similarly doesn’t think twice about Rebecca’s come-hither advances. Like, after all this time with Block, she’d suddenly decide to fall in love with somebody else, and this eager-beaver Princeton grad student would be The Guy?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh, puh-<i>leaze</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(Given the high-rolling self-indulgence on display, this film is surprisingly chaste: not a bared breast in sight, let alone any of the erotic sexual antics one would expect. But I digress again.)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Things get increasingly sloppy, with folks apparently changing their allegiances as a given scene demands. One sidebar character gets killed off-camera, except that he doesn’t; we’re later told that he was merely badly beaten, but is okay ... not that we ever see him again. Mind you, the narrative, as presented, demands that said individual <i>should</i> have been killed ... but that’s just the way Koppelman and Levien roll.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">John Heard is memorable as Richie’s deadbeat father, a gambling addict who wants only that his son not follow in his footsteps. Heard is understated, his Harry Furst a sad remnant of a man, and this low-key performance is a welcome relief from the feverish pitch at which everybody else operates.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Furman’s directorial approach feels less like a film, and more like the overstated “acting” we generally get from the pixel avatars in first-person-shooter computer games. The overall tone is that heightened, that exaggerated, that manipulative.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sidebar Costa Rican characters, whether in the local underworld or the local constabulary, are so poorly developed that it’s impossible to tell them apart. Some get assaulted; some do the assaulting. The details are irritatingly vague.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By the time we reach the mildly clever climax, we’re long past caring. And, even as the film concludes, fresh questions remain unanswered ... such as, What the heck happens to Richie’s father?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Furman, relatively new on the Hollywood scene, has two previous films to his credit. 2007’s <i>The Take</i> was stillborn, but he did a reasonably slick — if somewhat overwrought — job with 2011’s adaptation of Michael Connelly’s <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2011/03/lincoln-lawyer-sloppy-defense.html">The Lincoln Lawyer</a></i>. The result was engaging enough to suggest that, allied with competent writers, Furman could rise above hack-dom and carve out at least a minor career in B-flicks.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This limp exercise, however, won’t do him any favors.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just in passing, “runner-runner” is a poker term that refers to a Texas Hold ’em hand made by hitting two consecutive cards on the turn (fourth) and river (fifth) cards. Among the writer's many poetic works of prose fiction, the book earned a reputation for both its lean structure and dramatic plot. When I read it for the first time, I couldn't help but imagine what a powerful film <i>My Mortal Enemy</i> might be. Yet I also knew that, because of Cather's profound unhappiness with the film version of <i>A Lost Lady </i>(1934, starring Barbara Stanwyck), she hadn't allowed her other works to be adapted in her lifetime and that at the time of her death in 1947, the terms of her will dictated a ban on future film adaptations. Mostly because I saw in <i>My Mortal Enemy</i>'s central character, Myra Driscoll Henshawe, a role that would provide a golden opportunity for the right actress to deliver a blistering tour de force performance, </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I despaired that it would never be dramatized.</span><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The tale unfolds from the point of view of its narrator, a young Midwestern woman named Nellie, who grew up enchanted by the local legend of a great romance that had taken place not too many years before she was born. Myra Driscoll had been the pampered only heir of her great-uncle, the wealthiest man in town. Though well-educated and handsome, Oswald Henshawe was of more humble origins, and the love that developed between the two was unacceptable to Myra's guardian. Myra threw away the certain inheritance of most of her great-uncle's enormous fortune when she defied him and eloped with Oswald. For young Nellie, Myra and Oswald's "runaway marriage" was "the most interesting, indeed the only interesting" story among those told on "holidays or at family dinners." </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Myra had been taken in by her great-uncle when she was orphaned in childhood. He took her traveling with him to Europe, had her portrait painted by an esteemed painter, lavished her with clothing and jewelry as well as a riding horse and "a Steinway piano." She was spirited and witty and pretty and her guardian took pride in her. Though she enjoyed a close, affectionate relationship with her uncle, she was also proud and willful. When he solemnly promised he would "cut her off without a penny" if she married Oswald, she didn't react immediately. Some months later, though, Myra went out on a sleigh-ride with friends and never returned. The Myra we encounter when Nellie meets her in person is much older and very worldly. Myra and Oswald return to the small town 25 years after their elopement and Nellie, now 15, is finally introduced to the couple she has idealized as storybook lovers. She meets Myra first and is both bewitched and intimidated by the still-handsome but heavier-than-expected middle-aged woman. Myra's "charming, fluent voice, her clear light enunciation" bewilders Nellie, who also notes that her "sarcasm was so quick, so fine at the point - it was like being touched by a metal so cold that one doesn't know whether one is burned or chilled." Oswald is less imposing though also charismatic, and Nellie is captivated by his "dark and soft" eyes, shaped "exactly like half-moons." She observes "something about him that suggested personal bravery, magnanimity, and a fine, generous way of doing things." Nellie was more comfortable with Oswald than Myra, "because he did not frighten one so much." She enthusiastically takes in every detail - including long velvet curtains "lined with that rich cream-colour that lies under the blue skin of ripe figs." She is dazzled at the celebrity-studded New Years' Eve party the Henshawe's host, and enthralled when an opera star sings an aria from Bellini's <i>Norma</i> to piano accompaniment. But she also observes first-hand a darker side to the Henshawe marriage.  After spending a pleasant day with Myra in Central Park, Nellie notices in her friend what seems an "insane ambition" when the woman offhandedly reveals her deep disappointment that her lifestyle isn't at all grand enough to suit her. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then, finally, Nellie walks in on the pair in the midst of a ferocious argument. Myra has found a key on Oswald's key-ring that he cannot or will not explain to her satisfaction. Already, Nellie is aware that a young woman of Oswald's acquaintance has given him a gift of topaz cufflinks and that, to avoid Myra's jealous wrath, he had asked her aunt to pretend they were a Christmas present from her. As Nellie and her aunt leave New York, Myra makes sure to tell them that she knows the cufflinks were not a gift from the aunt, "I was sure to find out, I always do," she says. Nellie will not see the Henshawes for another ten years and when she does encounter them again, it comes as a complete surprise.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At 25, Nellie ventures, without much conviction, to a West Coast city (reminiscent of Los Angeles then) to teach. She takes rooms in an apartment-hotel and once there finds that the Henshawes are living in the same building. Their circumstances are much reduced and Myra, now a wheelchair-bound invalid, is dying. Oswald, who holds a low-paying job with the city while carefully tending to his wife's needs, looks far older than his years. Myra appears to Nellie "strong and broken, generous and tyrannical, a witty and rather wicked old woman." Those traits the younger woman had admired and disliked have become ever more distilled.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As death approaches, Myra grows more demanding and difficult, as does her dark resentment of Oswald. She is openly suspicious of him and seems to blame him for her every discomfort and complaint. On one particularly bad night she laments that she must "die like this, alone with my mortal enemy..." With William Wyler in the director’s chair, Davis had turned in three outstanding performances – in <i>Jezebel </i>(1938), <i>The Letter </i>(1940) and <i>The Little Foxes </i>(1941), all of them earning Best Actress Oscar nominations for her, and <i>Jezebel </i>bringing the gold statuette. And all three characters possessed traits in common with Myra – spoiled, impetuous Julie, manipulative Leslie Crosbie and fierce Regina Giddens. So, with Wyler directing Davis and an evocative score by Max Steiner, <i>My Mortal Enemy </i>could easily have been another stellar Warner Bros. release during Hollywood’s Golden Age. While Warners might’ve been inclined to put George Brent or Herbert Marshall in the role of Oswald, the studio’s best bet would’ve been Paul Henreid. It seems to me, though, that another actor, someone like Lew Ayres, would've been a better fit.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I’ve also imagined <i>My Mortal Enemy </i>as a Technicolor production from the 1950s starring Deborah Kerr and Gregory Peck. Kerr’s lofty poise and ability to convey tumultuous emotions (<i>Black Narcissus</i>,<i> From Here to Eternity, The Innocents</i>)<i> </i>would've made for an interesting take on Myra, who was as haughty as she was passionate. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Gregory Peck would have had no trouble portraying gentle, magnetically attractive Oswald. </span></span>A good pick to direct might’ve been John Huston, who so often and successfully adapted literary gems (<i>The Treasure of the Sierra Madre</i>, <i>Moby Dick</i>). Huston also devised the vivid color concept of <i>Moulin Rouge </i>(1952) and directed both Kerr and Peck in popular films of the 1950s.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">In the late 1960s, <i>My Mortal Enemy </i>could’ve provided a high profile vehicle as well as a solid follow-up to <i>Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? </i>for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In 1996, prosecutors indicted dozens of carting company executives, accusing them of running the garbage firms as branches of the Genovese and Gambino crime organizations. The mayor at the time, Rudy Giuliani, created a government agency, the Trade Waste Commission (now called the Business Integrity Commission), to weed out the crooks. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">But Rudy didn’t kill the beast. This year, federal prosecutors arrested 30 waste haulers, calling them members of the Gambino, Genovese and Luchese crime families and accusing them of racketeering — everything from loansharking to shaking down legitimate businesses and dividing up the New York area into territories controlled by different mobsters. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">To make matters worse, according to Transform Don’t Trash, a large number of commercial waste companies compete in the same neighborhoods, with multiple diesel-powered trucks running up and down the same streets, spewing soot and leaving potholes and chewed-up pavement in their wake. A lack of oversight leaves low-level waste workers badly underpaid and exposed to poisons, disease and accidents, making trash collection and removal one of the 10 deadliest occupations in America. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">And most of the garbage finally arrives in low-income, outer-borough neighborhoods. Mark Meadow's (R-N.C.)</a> letter,  <a href="http://www.freedomworks.org/blog/jwithrow/does-your-senator-stand-with-mike-lee-against-obam" sl-processed="1">81 members</a> of the 233 GOP caucus support this hardcore  strategy. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Adding them up, we see that only 13.8 million Americans actually voted for  the suicide caucus. That's only 11.7% of the people who voted in a congressional election in  2012, and an absolutely pathetic 4.3% of the U.S. population.</blockquote>How can such a small percentage of people stack Congress with enough sociopaths to shut down the government? The answer is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering" rel="nofollow">gerrymandering</a> -- self-serving congressional redistricting that allowed Republicans to get 33 more seats than Democrats in the last election despite getting fewer votes.<br /><br />And <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/10/02/2716421/how-gerrymandering-makes-a-speedy-shutdown-end-unlikely/"><em>Think Progress</em> reports</a> that Republican gerrymandering makes a quick resolution to the shutdown even more unlikely:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Obama garnered 48.8 percent of the vote or more in just 13 of the 218 other Congressional Districts currently represented by a Republican -- and even if the general public wants the government reopened, there is little political pressure in heavily GOP districts for Republican members to side with President Obama and the Democrats.</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">With a gerrymandered majority consisting of districts that do not represent the majority of Americans’ viewpoints, House Republicans can keep the government in a shutdown highly insulated from the anger and blame they are receiving.</blockquote>So when you hear the fanatics in Washington say they're carrying out the will of the American people, remember they're more likely carrying out the will of their heavily gerrymandered districts. They aren't satisfied with the <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/02/sequester-is-anti-growth-and-anti.html" rel="nofollow">anti-worker sequester cuts</a> they got this year. To them, it's great to tear at the social safety net. But it's better to rip it to pieces and even better to make it look like your opponents are to blame for the crisis.<br /><br />When that doesn't work the extremists are busy downplaying the crisis altogether. But <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/10/01/the-nine-most-painful-consequences-of-a-government-shutdown/" rel="nofollow">the shutdown is much more than a few shuttered parks</a>. It's an attack on federal workers, veterans' benefits, vaccine programs, food safety inspections, food assistance for women and children, disability benefits, Head Start programs, financing for small businesses, and tourism.<br /><br />And it's all thanks to the shrill minority spawned from gerrymandered voting districts -- democracy (and the economy) be damned.
