One concern about Myriad's monopoly is cost. Helen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last February in California, says her genetic counselor suggested she should be tested, "to help with my decision making and to inform my sister, who if I tested positive would need to be watched carefully." She says, "I spoke to my insurance company (Blue Cross/ Anthem) and they stated that the test would not be covered and the cost would be between $3,000 and $4,000." Helen says she couldn't afford that. "It is a horrifying feeling to be told you have a deadly disease and yet, a helpful and informative test will not be covered by your insurance company," she writes. "I had to make a major health decision solely on financial reasons. Duke policy researcher Robert Cook-Deegan told me last week that Myriad's offer of free testing applies in just 0.4 percent of cases. Another reader, Steven, wrote to me about his efforts to get the test covered for his wife, who died of breast cancer related to the BRCA 1 gene in 2009. When she was diagnosed, her doctor recommended testing. As in Helen's case, this was for the benefit of family members as well as for her. To get the insurer to pay the $3,500 bill, Steven ended up on a telephone odyssey, getting passed from insurance reps to testing reps and back again. "From a patient/insured perspective, that process is a black box," he wrote. "The insurance companies will not let you speak directly and the claims people say that they cannot contact them. The claims people can only regurgitate what the payment people write." The calls took six weeks, "a pleasant diversion while one's wife is sick from chemo," Steven dryly remarked. He is a lawyer, and he wound up threatening to sue—and wondering how a patient without a law degree in the family would have fared. Here's his conclusion: "On the patient level, Myriad has monopoly pricing, and they refuse to license it to any other lab. Her insurance company picked up the rest without a problem. "The thing that was toughest for me about undergoing the test was how long it takes to get results," she wrote. With the version of the test she took, she waited a month. "I needed to know my BRCA status in order to make a decision between bilateral mastectomy or much more minor breast-conserving surgery. And it was a week from my initial cancer diagnosis before I could get an appointment to see a genetic counselor for the test. Those five weeks were some of the longest, most stressful weeks of my life. I don't know if there's a procedural reason why it takes Myriad so long to produce test results, but as long as they're the only lab that performs the test, there's no incentive to get faster." Rogers, of Myriad, said that patients receive their testing results in about a week. There are many magazines emerging, for me, the question is going to be who creates and continues to curate their magazine in the long term. I'm hesitant to jump on any bandwagons yet as there are many flash-in-the-pan types out there. Robert Scoble has some great magazines, though. I'm planning on updating my Flipboard magazine daily (with Sundays off) to see how it works. You can also search through Flipboard's recommended content at the top right where you access your magazine.</p> <p>There are a million questions for Flipboard (analytics, etc.) but in the meantime there's lots of potential for classrooms and teachers of all types. Thanks to the nice people at Flipboard who called me the week before this launched so I was ready to play with it while I had surgery during spring break. It is just as easy and cool as they said, a rare thing in this world of vaporware. Do we cause children to stress out unfairly because adults can't get their act together or it takes time to change the curriculum? Interesting reading. "The conflict is fueled by the importance of teaching jobs for the poor mountain and coastal villages where the dissident union is strongest. Teaching jobs in Guerrero with lifelong job security, benefits and pension pay about $495 and $1,650 a month, depending on qualifications and tenure, well above average in rural areas, according to teachers and outside experts. Boston Marathon

Watching the news about the bombing of the Boston Marathon. What a completely senseless act. I follow the rules and I expect everyone else to do so too. Right here on the wall of my home office I have my arm bands from my glory days at Willie Ray Smith Middle School right here in Beaumont. I was named Hall Monitor of the Year two years in a row. Nobody else has ever achieved this and nobody else ever will. You know why? I busted my older brother’s friend Huan Deng drinking straight from the milk carton. I told his mother about and when she hesitated I reminded her that we had a rule against such activities and to allow Huan to openly defy them like this would result in a lifetime of him flaunting rules until he ended up in prison. So, she grounded him. Sure, he beat the hell out of me for it, but sometimes you gotta just take an ass-whipping for justice. </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Probably my greatest achievement in rule enforcement, well until now, was when I caught little Rosalinda Rodriguez taking three cookies instead of two at our Valentine’s Day Celebration my senior year at Ozen High School here in Beaumont. A lot of people thought it was really wrong of me to out her since she was my girlfriend, but my first loyalty has always been to the rules. A little creativity in your embezzlement is all I ask for. Sure, I’m not the most popular guy at work, but I’m not there to make friends. I constantly have to call the Homeowner’s Association President Shastina Johnson about people leaving their garage doors open and tell her to do her damn job and enforce the rules! This just invites petty theft. Something didn’t look right so I pretended that Poo-Poo needed to do her business. When I acted like I was scooping up here droppings, I casually measured the height of the grass in his yard. Just as a thought. An eighth of an inch over what the bylaws allow! So, I had to call Shastina and have her write him up. </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Yeah, I could have waited to see if he was going to mow during the weekend, but that’s not my style. I don’t wait until things have all gone to hell and anarchy breaks out to act. If I don’t say something and he doesn’t mow, next think you know people are putting pink flamingos out in their yards!
