It's A Wonderful Life Sequel In The Works

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Author: Kelly West | published: November 18, 2013 12:15pm PST</p><br /><p><img src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/40339/it_s_a_wonderful_life_40339.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>We'll just go ahead and rip the bandage off: <i>It's A Wonderful Life</i> is getting a sequel. And not a made-for-TV Hallmark-Lifetime-ABC Family-style sequel, but an actual feature film that follows up on the 1946 Frank Capra classic, which will focus on George Bailey's unlikable grandson. Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu in the original film, will appear in the sequel, taking what sounds like the Clarence role.</p><br /><p>Variety says this project is a collaboration from Star Partners and Hummingbird Prods, and it will be titled <i>It's A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story</i>. The goal is to get the movie into theaters in time for the 2015 holiday season.</p><br /><p>The original film starred Jimmy Stewart as a man who spends his life dreaming of the day he can leave the small town of Bedford Falls and see the world, but life keeps throwing obstacles in his path. Being the good man that he is, he repeatedly sets aside his own goals in order to be there for his friends, his family and the people of Bedford Falls. When it seems like he's about to lose everything, he considers suicide, which is when an angel named Clarence steps in and shows him what things would be like had he never been born.</p><br /><p>From what Variety reports about the sequel, it sounds like <i>The Rest of the Story</i> will flip that twist around on Bailey's grandson, as Grimes' character will show him how much better off the world would have been had he never been born. That sounds like it could be kind of depressing in a Ghost-of-Christmas-Yet-To-Come guilt-factor kind of way. Or maybe I'm just having a really hard time practicing my usual optimism here, as a major fan of Capra's film. On the bright side — I'll almost always find one — it's not a remake. And who knows? Maybe the new film will capture some of the magic that made the original movie a beloved holiday classic.</p><br /><p>Producer Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton wrote the screenplay for the sequel, and Farnsworth's quoted as saying, 'The storyline of the new film retains the spirit of the original – every life is important as long as you have friends.' That sounds somewhat similar to Clarence's parting words to George Bailey, 'Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.'</p><br /><p>Casting for the grandson won't happen until February, and Variety says producers are in talks to bring back some of the original cast members in addition to Grimes. Among the names mentioned were Jimmy Hawkins (Tommy Bailey) and Carol Coombs (Janie Bailey). Bringing Grimes in to play the angel is a nice tie-in to the original movie, in which she played Zuzu, George's adorable daughter, who caught a cold trying not to crush her prize flower on her way home from school. Part of George's breakdown involves yelling at Zuzu's teacher over the ordeal, which leads to George later getting punched in the mouth by the teacher's husband, causing George's lip to bleed. It's a chain of events that leads George to the bridge, and into the care of Clarence. And later, Zuzu's petals and George's bleeding lip turn out to be cause for celebration.</p><br /><p>Just the other day, we shared the news that NBC has set the dates for their two airings of the classic film. <i>It's A Wonderful Life</i> will air on NBC December 14 and again on Christmas Eve. And now it looks like we have a sequel to anticipate.</p><br /></div>

Bills ban fan who fell out of Ralph Wilson Stadium's upper deck

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The fan who slid down a handrail and fell into the crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday has been banned from attending future Buffalo Bills games.</p><br /><p>'The irresponsible behavior that occurred at yesterday's game by the fan who fell from the upper deck is a violation of our Fan Code of Conduct and cannot, and will not, be tolerated,' Bills' President and CEO Russ Brandon said in a statement issued on Monday afternoon.</p><br /><p>'This individual will not be permitted back into Ralph Wilson Stadium. The vast majority of our fans who attend Bills home games at Ralph Wilson Stadium do so in a responsible manner and we continue to work diligently to eliminate those individuals who violate our Fan Code of Conduct from game days at our stadium. We are cooperating with the Erie County Sheriff's Office during their investigation of this incident and we want to extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the fan who was injured in the 200 level.'</p><br /><p>Jeff Savidge, a season ticket holder, had a bird's-eye view when the fan fell from the third deck and landed on another man at the start of the second quarter of the Bills' 37-14 win over the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.</p><br /><p>Savidge said he was looking around and talking with other spectators when a man slid down a handrail and flipped backward, falling about 30 feet onto another fan. Savidge said he saw the falling spectator out of the corner of his eye as he crashed into the other fan's neck and flipped again, landing a couple of rows in front of him.</p><br /><img src="http://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/b5ed798b5e7c438f616278bf4de555bc54fd6449/r=x307&c=540x304/http/bcdownload.gannett.edgesuite.net/wgrz/34300055001/201311/970/34300055001_2847793140001_vs-528a4332e4b037a10ef41e50-1592194016001.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>'It was kind of crazy,' Savidge said. 'The fact that he fell on that other guy kind of cushioned him.'</p><br /><p>Savidge said members of the Erie County Sheriff's Department, stadium security and other fans came to the aid of the injured spectators immediately.</p><br /><p>'Everyone did a great job of just making sure everyone was all right,' Savidge said.</p><br /><p>Savidge said the man who fell took a moment to regroup and did not seem seriously injured.</p><br /><p>'He kind of sat right up, took a minute to get his bearings and said 'I'm OK, I'm OK,' ' Savidge said.</p><br /><p>The spectator who the man landed on seemed to be more seriously injured, Savidge said. A statement from the Bills on Sunday said both were taken to a hospital. WGRZ-TV in Buffalo reported that both injured fans were treated and have been released from Erie County Medical Center.</p><br /><p>Savidge said the scene was a bit chaotic at first.</p><br /><p>'People were kind of confused at first, trying to see where the heck he came from,' he said.</p><br /><p>Savidge saw a video of the incident on Facebook when he returned home after the game.</p><br /><p>'I couldn't believe that anybody would want to do that,' he said.</p><br /><p>Erie County sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Murray told the Associated Press that the incident is under investigation and charges may be filed.</p><br /><p>Murray also said both injured spectators were from the Buffalo area.</p><br /><p>Savidge said the Bills offered some spectators in the area a chance to watch the remainder of the game in a suite. Fed's Dudley, a staunch dove, turns upbeat on US economy

Dudley, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, answers questions during a lunch at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, May 24, 2012.</p><br /><p>The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York pointed to an improvement in the labor market last month and better-than-expected gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the third quarter, and he predicted a rise in economic growth next year and in 2015.</p><br /><p>Dudley, a close ally of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, did not say what this rosier view might mean for the central bank's accommodative policy. But the comments may suggest the Fed as a whole is closer than otherwise thought to reducing the pace of its $85-billion in monthly asset purchases, which are meant to spur investment, hiring and growth.</p><br /><p>'I have to admit that I am getting more hopeful,' Dudley, a permanent voter on the Fed's policy-setting committee, told students and professors at Queens College in New York.</p><br /><p>'Not only do we have some better data in hand, but also the fiscal drag, which has been holding the economy back, is likely to abate considerably over the next few years at the same time that the fundamental underpinnings of the economy are improving.'</p><br /><p>Though he warned of 'substantial uncertainty' in his forecast, Dudley was clearly more upbeat than the last time he publicly weighed in on the state of the economy in the wake of the 2007-2009 recession.</p><br /><p>In late September, Dudley said the labor market was still not healthy and the broader recovery still needed monetary support from the Fed including the quantitative easing program, known as QE.</p><br /><p>'TURNING POINT FOR THE ECONOMY'</p><br /><p>On Monday he predicted less interference from fiscal policies, better private-sector growth, and a 'fairly cyclical' recovery in consumer spending and durable goods.</p><br /><p>Dudley also noted banks have eased credit standards, and he predicted an improvement in labor market conditions and a positive 'updrift' in still-low U.S. inflation as the pace of GDP growth picks up over the next two years.</p><br /><p>Adding to the positive picture, the Fed policymaker said the sustained contraction in state- and local-government spending and employment 'appears to be over.'</p><br /><p>U.S. stocks edged slightly higher after Dudley took to the podium, but remained mostly flat after hitting a fresh record high earlier on Monday.</p><br /><p>Dudley's speech - part of a tour of New York's ethnically diverse Queens borough that includes a tour of a piano factory - comes days after fellow Fed policy-maker Janet Yellen strongly defended the Fed's bold steps to spur economic growth.</p><br /><p>Yellen, President Barack Obama's nominee to succeed Bernanke in February, made it clear at a Senate committee hearing that she would push on with easy policies until she was satisfied a durable recovery was in place.</p><br /><p>U.S. GDP growth was 2.8 percent in the third quarter of this year, and employers added 204,000 new jobs to their payrolls in October, data that suggests the economy was able to weather the 16-day government shutdown last month.</p><br /><p>Calling these 'nascent signs that the economy may be doing better,' Dudley said: 'I hope that this marks a turning point for the economy.'</p><br /><p>Yet the unemployment rate remains high at 7.3 percent, and the Fed has said it wants to see substantial improvement on that front before winding down purchases of Treasury and mortgage bonds.</p><br /><p>QE has been in place for 14 straight months, sowing concerns among some more hawkish Fed policymakers that the Fed's $3.8-trillion balance sheet will bring about asset-price bubbles or inflation on the horizon.</p><br /><p>(Reporting by Jonathan Spicer; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)</p><br /></div>

The group has been organizing Wal-Mart worker protests since last year.</p><br /><p>Wal-Mart spokesman Kory Lundberg said that particular store has held similar food donation drives for several years. The food supports workers who are facing 'an unforeseen hardship,' such as a spouse losing a job. Some of the food collected last year went to a mother whose child support benefits had stopped, so it helped provide her children a holiday meal, he said.</p><br /><p>'I spoke to workers at the store today and they said that they're going to continue to look after their folks who have realized a hardship recently,' Lundberg said.</p><br /><p>He wasn't aware of similar drives at any of its 4,000-plus stores nationwide, but he said he wouldn't be surprised if they were.</p><br /><p>Related: Wal-Mart's 2013 Black Friday deals</p><br /><p>The food drive plays into claims that Wal-Mart does not pay its workers a living wage.</p><br /><p>In September, Bill Simon, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart U.S., said that less than half of the company's U.S. employees make more than $25,000 per year. The federal poverty level for a family of four is $23, 500.</p><br /><p>A few months earlier, a report released by Congressional Democrats showed that the cost of these low wages are transferred to taxpayers, since employees then rely on public assistance programs. The report, put out by the Democratic staff of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, estimated that one Wal-Mart supercenter alone employing 300 workers could cost taxpayers at least $904,000 annually.</p><br /><p>Low wages have sparked a spate of protests over the last year, wherein Wal-Mart workers have called for better pay, more hours and the right to speak out without retaliation. The protests kicked off last year around Black Friday. Earlier this month, three current and two former Wal-Mart workers were arrested while picketing outside of a Los Angeles store.</p><br /><p>Related: Outrage over Kmart's Thanksgiving decision</p><br /><p>The particular focus on Wal-Mart's Thanksgiving drive comes just weeks before one million workers are expected to work over the holiday weekend. The stores will open earlier than ever before, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.</p><br /><p>The retailer said it would give workers a holiday meal, extra pay and 25% off of an entire purchase in order to combat the backlash that retailers were ruining Thanksgiving for their employees.</p><br /><p>Wal-Mart also held a series of town halls across the country on Monday, where they surprised 350 workers with promotions. The company said it's on track to promote 160,000 workers this year, including more than 25,000 between November and the end of January.</p><br /><p>But OUR Walmart said that's not enough. (AP) — Princeton University officials are weighing whether to give students a meningitis vaccine that hasn’t been approved in the U.S. to stop the spread of the sometimes deadly disease.</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>An announcement was expected Monday, a Princeton spokesman said.</p> <p>Since March, seven cases of meningitis have been confirmed on the New Jersey campus with six students and a visitor diagnosed, the most recent last week. None of the cases has been fatal.</p> <p>Last week, the federal Food and Drug Administration approved importing the vaccine, Bexsero, for possible use at the Ivy League school.</p> <p>The Centers for Disease Control says the outbreak at Princeton is the first in the world since the vaccine against the type B meningococcal bacteria was approved in Europe and Australia this year, the only one for use against the strain. The vaccine is in the approval process in the U.S.</p> <p>The B strain is among the most common in Europe and also has been found frequently in the U.S. Last year, for instance, it accounted for 160 of the 480 meningitis cases in the U.S. tallied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one in 10 young adults with the strain dies. One in five develops a permanent disability.</p> <p>Under New Jersey state law, students who live in dorms must have vaccinations against other strains of meningitis. But a different type of vaccine is needed for type B, said Pritish Tosh, a Mayo Clinic researcher who develops vaccines. He said that Bexsero, sold by Novartis, has had good results so far where it has been used.</p> <p>“Since there is a product available,” he said, “it makes a lot of sense of me if the public health authorities go for it.”</p> <p>Meningitis can be spread through kissing, coughing or lengthy contact. Today, another group of low-wage workers -- port truck drivers -- walked off the job in a surprise 36-hour strike at the Port of Los Angeles.<br /><br /><a href="http://teamster.org/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters</a> are supporting low-wage worker strikes because -- well, because an injury to one is an injury to all. Because the only way to rebuild the middle class is by raising wages. Because it's the right thing to do.<br /><br />In Los Angeles, three Teamsters were among the 54 arrested for acts of civil disobedience during a Walmart protest. Seattle Teamsters came out to represent for Walmart strikers in the Northwest. And today Teamsters have been walking the strike line at the Port of Los Angeles since 5 a.m.<br /><br />Meanwhile, a Walmart spokesman defended the food drive. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>'Breaking Bad' Emmy winner finds her next role.</p><br /><p>Anna Gunn, who played the aggrieved enabler of Walter White on AMC's just-concluded <i>Breaking Bad</i>, has found her next gig.</p><br /><p>Gunn will play Detective Ellie Miller, who's investigating the death of a friend's child, in Fox's Americanized remake of BBC's <i>Broadchurch</i>, due next season. The remake, to be called <i>Gracepoint</i>, will star <i>Broadchurch</i>'s David Tennant as Detective Emmett Carver, who's brought into the case and gets the promotion Miller thought she'd won. Gunn won an Emmy for her role as Skyler White.</p><br /><p>Also joining the cast is Jacki Weaver, who played Bradley Cooper's mother (and Robert De Niro's wife) in last fall's <i>Silver Linings Playbook</i>, which won her an Oscar nomination. After years of systematic inculcation about the power of cholesterol reduction, this was the first time he had seen the numbers.</p> <p>“I don’t get it. I thought cholesterol was the big player in heart attacks.”</p> <p>Not really. Three-quarters of people having a first heart attack, for instance, have normal cholesterol levels.</p> <p>“Seriously?”</p> <p>Indeed. In fact, 50 years ago during the Framingham Heart Study, researchers first suggested that cholesterol may be a weak risk factor for heart disease. This led to a parade of drugs (fibrates, niacin, ezetemibe, etc.) that, despite lowering cholesterol, didn’t help people live longer or avoid heart attacks.</p> <p>“I’ve never heard that.”</p> <p>It gets worse: When the completed, 30-year data from the study was analyzed, in most age groups high cholesterol wasn’t associated with more deaths. In fact, for older people, deaths were more common with low cholesterol.</p> <p>“Now wait. Statins are supposed to be a ‘miracle drug.’ Heart disease is declining, right?”</p> <p>Actually, heart disease deaths started dropping 40 years ago and the rate of that decline is completely unchanged since statins came into widespread use. Mind behind Carolina's D turns heads

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Commentary</p><br /><p>Coordinator Sean McDermott bounces back from Philly firing, preps for next move</p><br /><p>Sean McDermott's time is coming. The Carolina Panthers' 39-year-old defensive coordinator is going to be one of the hot head-coaching prospects for 2014.</p><br /><p>McDermott's defense, which held San Francisco to nine points last week and faces New England on Monday night, is that good.</p><br /><p>A few years ago, McDermott was a castoff, fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, the only NFL team for which he had ever worked. McDermott was a grinder. He started as an entry-level scouting administrative coordinator for the Eagles in 1998 and worked his way up as an assistant to Andy Reid, then a quality-control coach, then an assistant defensive-backs coach and then the linebackers coach.</p><br /><p>After the great Jim Johnson died before the 2009 season, Reid promoted McDermott to defensive coordinator. Following a legend is never easy, and McDermott worked in the long shadow of a masterful coach known for his creative blitz packages and stingy, dominating defenses.</p><br /><p>McDermott's defenses didn't live up to expectations. In 2010, the Eagles allowed 377 points, their most since 1974, and struggled in the red zone. Despite the fact that the Eagles went 21-11 and made the playoffs twice during McDermott's tenure, it wasn't enough. At that time in Philadelphia, it was Super Bowl or bust. After two seasons, McDermott became a sacrificial lamb, one of several as Reid's Eagles slid into a decline that ultimately cost Reid his job, too.</p><br />[+] Enlarge<img src="http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/1116/nfl_g_seanmc_cr_200x300.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>'It's humbling to have gone through what I've gone through, to be honest,' McDermott said. 'But what I went through in Philadelphia has made me a better coach. It happened at a young time in my career. I was trending up, going from one job to the next, getting more and more responsibilities. What I went through really helped me to say, 'Hey, take a step back and understand what's made me successful.'</p><br /><p>'I've continued to learn and put my signature on a defense from scratch.'</p><br /><p>The day after he was fired, McDermott had 'multiple job offers,' he said. He decided to reunite with Ron Rivera, with whom he had worked for five years in Philadelphia.</p><br /><p>Given his background as defensive coordinator in Chicago and San Diego, Rivera has been involved in defining the Panthers' defensive identity, but he has also encouraged McDermott to be his own man. He hasn't had to try to be Johnson.</p><br /><p>McDermott stressed several core values to be effective at playing what he calls 'good, old-fashioned football.' Run to the ball. Tackle. Be fundamentally sound. Create turnovers. Be stout in the red zone. Don't give up big plays.</p><br /><p>And McDermott subscribes to Johnson's philosophy that if the defense can limit opponents to 17 or fewer points, the team should win the game.</p><br /><p>Incrementally, as the Panthers used high draft picks to bolster the defense, Carolina improved from 28th in total defense in 2011 to 10th in 2012 to first this season, allowing 283.3 yards per game. The Panthers are among the league leaders with a plus-8 turnover differential and are tied for fifth in red zone touchdown percentage (64.3).</p><br /><p>During its five-game winning streak, Carolina is second in points and yards allowed and has forced 21 turnovers. It held Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson to what was then a season-low 62 yards, limited Atlanta to 10 points and held the 49ers to 151 total yards and an average of 2.9 yards per play in San Francisco.</p><br /><p>To a man, the players credit McDermott for his creative play-calling, which keeps offenses guessing.</p><br /><p>'In Philly, we used to joke he never went home,' said Panthers safety Quintin Mikell, who played for the Eagles for eight seasons. 'He was always studying and sleeping in the office. He's probably doing the same stuff here.'</p><br />[+] Enlarge<img src="http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/1118/nfl_a_kuechly_b1_300x200.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Mikell has played with McDermott as both his position coach and his coordinator, and he sees a man who is now more comfortable as a coach.</p><br /><p>'When you had the situation in Philly and guys who had been doing things one way for so long, it was hard for Sean to put his imprint on it because things had been done one way for so long,' said Mikell, whom the Panthers picked up in free agency this year. 'He had an opportunity to get that experience, but at the same time, it wasn't exactly the way he wanted it do be. He couldn't make the decisions.</p><br /><p>'Now, you see he's got his own ideas, his own way of doing things. A lot of it makes sense. It's cool to see the growth in him in just a short amount of time. He's definitely gotten the guys to buy in and do whatever it takes to win.'</p><br /><p>Despite the way he left Philadelphia, McDermott said he still speaks to Reid weekly. He is part of Reid's rich coaching tree that includes Rivera, Baltimore coach John Harbaugh, Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier, former St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo and former Vikings coach Brad Childress.</p><br /><p>When told that word around the league is that McDermott will be a sought-after head-coaching candidate when the inevitable carousel starts turning, Reid said in a text: 'He deserves it. Hard working. Smart. Honest. Good person.'</p><br /><p>'As hard as it was, getting out of Philadelphia is what I needed,' McDermott said. 'It really was. I take a lot of pride in what I did there. The experience was great, and there's no substitute for experience. I think I'm better as a coach, a husband and a father because of my time in Philadelphia.'</p><br /><p>McDermott aspires to become a head coach. <h2>‘I’ve always wanted to make the music that you’d go into a coffee shop and hear,’ she says</h2> <div class="body"> <p><span class="s1">Angel Haze first broke onto the scene last year, with her excellent mixtape </span><em style="letter-spacing: 0.012em; line-height: 1.5em;">Classick</em><span class="s1">, which included an unabashedly raw and honest cover of </span><span class="s1"><strong>Eminem</strong></span><span class="s1">‘s “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” Haze’s version detailed the harrowing story of her repeated rape and abuse when she was a child and a few weeks ago, she opened up further with a cover of Macklemore’s “Same Love” where she laments about her struggles with family over her own sexuality. This January, however, she’ll stop with the mixtapes and cover songs and finally release her long-awaited debut,</span> <em style="letter-spacing: 0.012em; line-height: 1.5em;">Dirty Gold</em><span class="s1">. This morning, I woke up and got a link to the final, sterling masters and I freaked out. I’m so excited because it’s actually happening and that’s surreal for me. Fuck, I don’t even feel it completely until the day the album comes out and I just die. It’ll be an overload of emotions.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>What does “dirty gold” mean anyways?</strong><br> It’s how I view people in particular and, specifically, myself. Gold comes from the dirt. It’s underground and you mine it and make it better. That’s how I view people. You go through your dirt and your tough stuff and you deal and you get better. Once you come out of it, you’re fucking worth something. That’s how I saw myself in regards to the album. I looked back at where I was before I started making the album. I was obviously very dark and, when you hear this album, there’s an exponential amount of growth in every single thing that I’ve done. And I’m only saying that because it’s something that I’m very proud of.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Is that you singing on the U.K. single “Echelon (It’s My Way)” as well as rapping?</strong><br> Yeah, I sing everything on the album aside from the Sia vocals and one on “Black Synagogue.” I worked overtime to get my vocal skills up. Marcus [Dravs] would trap me in rooms and make me sing for hours on end until he felt like it was good enough for him. Not just good enough for life, but good enough for him.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You’ve talked before about doing other types of music as well.</strong><br> I’m gearing up for the crossover, man. [<em>Laughs</em>.]</p> <p></p> <p><strong>After one album?</strong><br> Yeah, totally. After one album. If I’m just chewing it then I’m going to be stuck.</p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p><strong>What genre are you going to tackle?</strong><br> I don’t want to say that I want to be a new Tracy Chapman, but I want to make music in the same vein. I’ve been taking guitar lessons and writing songs. I have a song on my album called “Planes Fly,” which is like an alternative version of “Fast Car”. I fucking love her. I love Jason Mraz. I’ve always wanted to make the music that you’d go into a fucking coffee shop and hear. You’d sit there and you’d feel good. I want to be a hippy basically. [<em>Laughs.</em>]</p> <p></p> <p><strong>What’s <em>Dirty Gold</em>‘s sound like?</strong><br> I think it’s a melting pot of a ton of different genres. I worked with a bunch of people who were able to take what I wanted it to be and make it all very cohesive. With their help, I feel like I created my own genre.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You didn’t even start listening to secular music until you were 16 and in Brooklyn, right?</strong><br> When I was 16, yeah. I’m an autodidact so everything that I learn, I learn by reading. Rap wasn’t something I learned because I wanted to be like anyone. It was something I wanted to master because I wanted to challenge myself. After reading and going on all these stupid forums for rap battles and stuff, I was amazed. It was reading and memorizing all this terminology. Like multiples or wordplay and understanding what it meant to do all this stuff, and then putting it into fruition and trying and trying and trying. Obviously, I failed for the first two years, but I think I’m getting there now.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You’ve knocked off a bunch of huge hits already with the freestyles. What’s next?</strong><br> I’m doing OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars.” It’s going to be amazing.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Your cover of “Same Love” blew up online. Did you plan to drop that poem in at the end all along?</strong><br> No, I actually did it spur of the moment. I didn’t want to leave that space open at the end so, being an OCD freak, I just decided to write a poem then and there.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>That’s crazy. You realize that, right?</strong><br> The first few lines actually come from an Andrea Gibson poem called “Andrew” and then, afterwards, I said, “Let’s keep going. Why not?” So I freestyled it and it came out pretty cool.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>People online have been begging for you to do a collaboration with Snow Tha Product. Are you a fan?</strong><br> Really? I didn’t even realize that. Yes, I’m a fan. I think she’s amazing. Of female lyricists, she’s definitely in my top five. I had no clue that anyone was calling for that.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You have to start reading your YouTube comments.</strong><br> I can’t read my YouTube comments because every other one is like, “I hate this bitch.” [<em>Laughs.</em>]</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Being from Detroit, when did you first hear about Eminem?</strong><br> I didn’t hear about Eminem until I was around fourteen when <em>8 Mile</em> was out on VHS or something. It was insane. I was like, “Who is this guy?” At first I thought he was really, really hot and I used to watch the movie over and over. I still know all of his freestyle rap verses from that movie. I’m a little embarrassed about that, but who cares. Once I learned about that, all of my knowledge of music came from remembering it from movies. Soundtracks saved my life.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Was moving to Brooklyn a huge culture shock?</strong><br> Yes! It’s like the most interesting amalgamation of things in life. I sat there saying, “Woah. There’s bluegrass. There’s country. There’s jazz. There’s rock. There’s pop. There’s pop rock. There’s alternative-rock. There’s alternative-rap. There’s goth-rap. There’s punk-rap!” There’s all this shit, so where do you start? I had no clue and I didn’t know how to go back. I didn’t understand the Biggies and the Tupacs.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You had no basis of knowledge for that.</strong><br> Yeah, I had none. I still didn’t until like last week. One of my DJ friends came over to my house and she loaded up all of this music on my laptop and said, “You have to listen to Gang Starr, De La Soul, Wu-Tang Clan.” I was like, “Woah, woah, woah. What’s the significance?” So she opened up all their Wikipedia pages as well and told me, “Read about them. Learn about them. Know this. This is your hip-hop lesson.” It still effects me to this day because I got more interested in developing my own influence and being influenced in my own way rather than saying, “This is my favorite rapper. I want to be just like them.” I wanted to figure out the point and put it into motion on my own shit.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Everyone knows Wu-Tang Clan, but what’s it like for someone like you to hear that for the very first time?</strong><br> To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. I felt like I didn’t understand the significance of everything, and when I want to know something, I have to know everything so I suppose I should have read their Wikipedia first. My friend played me “C.R.E.A.M” and I was like, “Oh, am I missing out on something because I don’t get it?” And then she explained it to me and I got it, so I listened again and I loved it. She made me watch a movie called <em>Brown Sugar</em> as well. She’s trying to get me to understand hip-hop and why everyone thinks it’s so important for me to know these things. I don’t see anything from a purely genre-specific stance. When I liked Christina Aguilera when I was younger, I liked her because her fucking passion in her voice when she sings is crazy and I’d feel something. I’ve only ever respected the artists who are capable of making me feel. So I don’t get the trendiness of all the genre-specific shit.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Do you worry about what people will say about your lack of historical knowledge?</strong><br> I feel like I got the brunt of that right at the beginning when I signed. There were so many hip-hop articles about how, “She doesn’t know anything. She doesn’t deserve to be signed. She doesn’t know any of the history. Who the fuck is this? She’s not a hip-hop artist.” To this day, I still have that stain within the hip-hop community where they don’t view me as a hip-hop artist, and that’s fine. I don’t think I’ll be any more crushed than I was when I first heard it. I’m over it now. I’m just like, “Well, that’s fine. I’m still going to continue to make this fucking music and move on with my life.”</p> <p></p> <p><strong>You don’t feel like you need to be a part of the “club.”</strong><br> No. I don’t think I’m a part of any club and that’s what makes everything better. To be a voice for the voiceless means to be an exclusive to everything. That’s your own club.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Have you heard from any of the people whose songs you’ve covered, like Eminem or Macklemore?</strong><br> Oh, yeah. Macklemore wrote me after I put out “Same Love” and he told me that he really respects it and that powerful writing is the reason they started doing what they do. I’ve been a Macklemore fan since the first time I heard his music, so that was amazing.</p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p><strong>How about Eminem?</strong><br> I know that he’s heard it. I’m not interested in feedback at all.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>It wasn’t written for him or anyone else.</strong><br> Yeah. I love him though. I’m just really scared to ever talk to him.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Is <em>Dirty Gold</em> as raw as what’s on those covers?</strong><br> Of course. I think even more so. I do this thing where I try not to impose my own point of view on other people, but I’m really excited for everyone to hear my perspective. It’s not as dark as the previous music has been because I’m just past the phase of sulking in my grittiness, but it’s still very lesson-bound. I reveal sides of myself that I’ve never shown.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Do you think so many people were moved by those songs because they can relate to them?</strong><br> Yeah, totally. There’s no other reason, unless you’re a pill-popping whore who wants to dance all night, to relate to music other than the fact that it makes you feel something. It makes you feel connected. It makes you feel less alone. And that’s what I’m always looking to achieve with my music.</p> <p></p> <p><strong>Do people feel like they can open up to you since you’re so open?</strong><br> There’s a song on my album called “Angels & Airwaves” that’s completely derived from this guy telling me that he wanted to kill himself. He told me that he feels lost and alone in the world and nothing helps him but my music (and even sometimes that doesn’t help him). He told me all these things about his life and his struggles. I took that and I turned it into a song for him on my album.</p> <p></p> <p>Some people message me things like, “I really need you right now.” I’ll wake up in the middle of the night with a Direct Message notification from my Twitter and I’ll be up all night talking to them and telling them, “It’s alright. You’re going to feel trapped and lost and all these things, but the most important thing to remember is that the only way out of the labyrinth is straight and back. That is the way through. That’s it.”</p> <p></p> <p><strong>What are you scared of?</strong><br> I’m absolutely terrified of the dark. Terrified. There has to be noise and there has to be light coming from somewhere or I can’t sleep at all. I just think that darkness is so symbolic of the evils of life that I get so nervous about all of my demons that I can’t sleep. I feel like they’re breathing down my neck. Like Kanye West says, “So scared of my demons, I go to sleep with a nightlight.” Light scares off the darkness.
