The Walking Dead's David Morrissey: The Governor May Actually Come in Peace

But he may not be the same sadistic, maniacal and ruthless leader of Woodbury that we remember.</p><br /><p>Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead (9/8c, AMC)will actually flash back to where we left off with The Governor ( David Morrissey) after he slaughtered most of the residents of Woodbury, fleeing into the ether for who knows where last season until he suddenly appeared outside of the prison in last week's episode. But Morrissey insists that viewers should keep an open mind about The Governor's return. Find out what's in store:</p><br />AMC renews Walking Dead for a fifth season<br /><p><strong>The Governor has finally returned! Where has he been since we left him? David Morrissey:</strong> Where we left him in Season 3 was a man in trauma really. The one thing about what happened to him in Episode 16 is that it wasn't a premeditated act. A red mist came over him, and he went into a blackout. That's where that terrible violence came from, a very dark, deep place inside of him. We see at the end of Season 3 that he's not happy about that. That's a very troubling discovery about himself that he can commit that kind of madness and has that capability. We pick up there. We pick up with a man dealing with the knowledge that he can be that destructive, and that's a difficult place to be.</p><br /><p><strong>Do you think he can actually ever live a normal life again? Morrissey:</strong> I think he wants to die, but he doesn't have the ability to kill himself. He goes into the nomadic-like madness where he's just walking and trying to walk away from his past. He offers himself up as a victim of fate. He just walks into the world to see what would happen. Through circumstances, he survives. But I think there's an element of him trying to reinvent himself into a person that is good, a person that has humanity and is of value and worth. The battle that he will have is whether he can achieve that or not because he knows he's capable of violence.</p><br /><p><strong>Why has The Governor returned to the prison? Is it pure vengeance? Hope for redemption? Morrissey:</strong> It's important to not jump to conclusions about why he's there. The knowledge we have of The Governor from last season, we'd like to think he's standing outside the prison with destruction on his mind. That might not necessarily be the case. There are many reasons why he could be standing outside the prison and why he has found his way back. We see in real life that sometimes we have to deal with our enemy by forgetting the past. Are these people changed? Are they different? Can I deal with my enemy, the person who's done me harm in the past? That's a negotiation that happens on a daily basis in the world.</p><br /><p><strong>The Governor has to at least still hate Michonne (Danai Gurira). Is there still a part of him that has particular plans for her? Morrissey:</strong> I'm not sure about that, actually. What will happen in Episodes 6 and 7 is an emergence of a character that is different. It's a character that is possibly trying to get away from all those feelings of revenge and those feelings of destruction. There's a way that possibly they can live separately and still live securely. They don't have to be sitting at the same dinner table. There are many ways to get through this if you take negotiating into consideration rather than all-out destruction.</p><br />25 unnecessary spin-offs<br /><p><strong>What can you tell us about Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and The Governor coming face-to-face? Morrissey:</strong> Rick is a very different character this season. He's making very different choices about leadership. They're also facing a different threat. There are lots of differences from last season and the characters are changing and the decisions they make are changing. We know The Governor is standing there on his own, but we don't know who he is with, we don't know the party he is with or if there are other people there. If he turned up at the gates of the prison on his own and said to Rick, 'Listen, can I come in?' there might be one answer he gets. But if he turns up with a different party of people with a different proposal, then I think Rick is intelligent enough to know that there are ways of dealing with The Governor and his other people where a compromise can work.</p><br /><p><strong>Is there a part of The Governor who regrets what he did to Andrea (Laurie Holden) because she cared about him? Morrissey:</strong> There are parts of The Governor who wants to erase elements of his past. There are elements that he wish hadn't happened, but not just Andrea. There are things that happened in the lead-up to that that he would change. There are very few people, particularly in The Walking Dead life, who would look at their past who wouldn't change a thing. He would reassess his past, and there would definitely be things he prefers wouldn't happen for many reasons.</p><br /><p><strong>When you were cast in the AMC pilot Line of Sight, viewers assumed it meant the end of The Governor. What's your response to that? Morrissey:</strong> The reason I was able to do that was because it's an AMC show. It's a great pilot and I really liked it, but I'm employed by The Walking Dead. I'm a Walking Dead actor. I want to be in it as long as I can like all the actors on it. I don't know what the plans are with AMC with that. I was more than happy to do it because I think it's a great show with great potential. I love doing Walking Dead and the character of The Governor, which I adore. The great thing about The Walking Dead is that you never know. I love the fact that no one is safe. It's where we work. That's what this world is. That's why it's so successful. We don't do those Star Trek moments where five guys are beaming down and four of them are regulars on the show and there's one guy you've never seen before. You think, 'I don't think he's making it back to the <i>Enterprise</i>.' We kill off our favorite characters some times. For Alabama, it looks like national title game or bust, as one loss will more than likely knock the Crimson Tide out of a chance to play in any major bowl game this season. The Buckeyes currently hold a slight edge, but a win by Baylor over Oklahoma State this week should be more than enough to vault the Bears past OSU in the BCS standings. With Ohio State having lost more poll support off its Illinois game, Baylor appears to now be the team with the upper hand in this race. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><cite>By Tania Ganguli | ESPN.com</cite> </p><br /><p>HOUSTON -- Andre Johnson left the field after being pushed away from quarterback Matt Schaub during a sideline spat Sunday, walking into the Houston Texans' locker room to cool off.</p><br /><p>Following Houston's 28-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders, the teammates talked about their argument, which stemmed from Schaub's incompletion in the end zone to Johnson on final play of the game.</p><br /><p>'You can see the frustration on his face, frustration on my face,' Johnson said. 'I'm not worried about that. I mean, me and Matt are fine. I have no problems with Matt. We played a lot of football together. Me and Matt have a good relationship.'</p><br /><p>Johnson and Schaub have played a lot of football together, but not recently. The Texans started Case Keenum in their past four games, all losses, benching Schaub after he suffered a foot and ankle injury against the St. Louis Rams.</p><br /><p>Schaub would not reveal what he and Johnson were arguing about on the sideline.</p><br /><p>'It's just emotions, emotions of the game, a culmination of a lot of things, but stuff we will keep between us,' Schaub said. 'He is a great guy and a great competitor, as am I. Just the heat of the moment, but that is behind us.'</p><br /><p>Schaub entered Sunday's game late in the third quarter, replacing a healthy Keenum.</p><br /><p>'We had to make a lot of changes from a protection standpoint to handle some of the things they were doing,' Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. 'Trying to create some tempo and do that and it made it very tough on Case, in my opinion, being a young player.</p><br /><p>'I knew that Matt could get done some of the things that I wanted to get done, real fast, and to give us a chance to win the football game. So that's why I did it.'</p><br /><p>Schaub finished the game with 12 completions on 25 passes for 155 yards, no interceptions and no touchdowns. Keenum completed 13 of 24 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception.</p><br /><p>The Texans are now 2-8, having lost a single-season franchise-record eight games in a row. Last week, Johnson called it the most frustrating season he's been through.</p><br /><p>Johnson, a first-round pick in 2003, was asked if he was happy playing for the Texans moving forward.</p><br /><p>'I'm under contract, so, I have to play my contract out,' Johnson said. 'I can't do anything about that.'</p><br /><p>Johnson also was asked if he would be willing to go through lean years again.</p><br /><p>'I've always said this this is where I wanted to be, so I don't really have anything to say about that,' he said. In no way shape or form when you hear the words “you have cancer,” do you ever feel a sense of joy, relief, or excitement. IT SUCKS. You immediately think about the worse case scenario and you don’t remember a word your doctor says from then on. That’s only part the movie <em>50/50</em> had accurate: the slow daze Joseph Gordon-Levitt went into when he was told he might die.</p> <p>So why do I say Cuck Fancer.? Because F*** Cancer is kind of vulgar for an 18-year-old kid embarking on a journey that he or she isn’t sure when it is going to end. For a kid who eventually wants to get hired by a big firm or start his own business and knowing that those words may hinder his chances via Facebook and other social media platforms. For the young kids whom I want to support but fear that a 13-year-old kid’s parents may not let them wear that bracelet. I am not sure why I think that today because I see this “I love (insert any inappropriate word you can think of)” bracelet everywhere. Is the word fuck worse than that? I guess so.</p> <p>During my first chemo treatment, my doctor walked up to me, didn’t even ask me how I was doing, and put a hat on my head. It appropriately said “Fuck Cancer.” OK, how cool is that? I was 18, wasn’t able to go to college, and I was sitting in an infusion room with a 70-year-old man next to me on a respirator. Not only did my doctor get it, he changed my experience with cancer from then on. Little did he or I know that I would fight it two more times til I was 23 and start a non-profit organization from his sarcastic gesture.</p> <p>So that’s what I did. I started a non-profit organization called Cuck Fancer. I felt that everybody could wear this bracelet. Either you completely understood what it meant, or like most people at first glance you think it is for a man named “Chuck Fancer,” who we are fighting for. It doesn’t matter as long as you wear the bracelet. There is a period at the end of Fancer (.). Why? Because it is a statement. I am not just casually saying it, I am STATING it.</p> <p>I want to help young adults who do not have the resources that I had while battling cancer. I was fortunate to have loving parents, good insurance, and a wealth of support from communities I wasn’t even apart of. Unfortunately, not everyone is as privileged as I am. As young adults we need to be educated on treatments that will help our quality of life and help us get back to the life we once lived. For goodness sakes, we are YOUNG adults, diagnosed before we are even 20. What did you do before you were 20? For us cancer survivors, our world was turned upside down and we have this crazy thing called perspective that most people shouldn’t have to realize until they are older.</p> <p>In the end, cancer just sucks. I have been to two funerals in the past eight months for people that I have known who have lost their battle to cancer. One of them was 13, the other was 50. The age is irrelevant, but what is relevant is that cancer does not care your age, height, ethnicity etc., it is ruthless. So as a young survivor I want to do what I can to make the lives of those fighting that much easier.</p> <p>I hope my organization can give light to young adults who cannot see past their fight. I want people to see the lime green bracelet and not only let it stick out for what it looks like, but for what it stands for. I am on the other side of cancer now, as of this past April, I was finally told I was in remission. But I will never forget what cancer tried to take from me. For not only did it fail, I persevered. I took from cancer what cancer couldn’t take from me: my passion, my love for life, and my strength.</p> <p>So if you are struggling with your battle and reading this article right now, just know we understand and get how hard it is. China issues new reform details

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>BEIJING ( Caixin Online) - China will ask state-owned enterprises (SOE) to contribute more of their profits to the government and allow more couples to have a second child, a key Communist Party document published by Xinhua says.</p><br /><p>Three days after the third plenum of the party's 18th Central Committee ended, the state news agency published a 20,000-word document detailing decisions finalized at the closed-door meeting.</p><br /><p><img src="http://i.marketwatch.com/_newsimages/story/misc/caixin-183.gif" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>/conga/story/misc/caixin.html 61611</p><br /><p>The document lists 60 tasks for the party and says decisive results must be reached by 2020.</p><br /><p>Party General Secretary Xi Jinping told the third full meeting of the 205-member Central Committee that it took seven months for a team headed by himself, party propaganda boss Liu Yunshan and Executive Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli to draft the decisions.</p><br /><p>The seven-member Politburo Standing Committee held three deliberation sessions, the 25-member Politburo studied the decisions twice, and 'old comrades' were consulted, as were representatives from other parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. The latter is a body that serves as a bridge between private enterprise and the government.</p><br /><p>'The key is to build an environment for fair competition, to enhance the vitality of society and the economy, to improve government efficiency and capability, to realize social justice and fairness, to push for social harmony and better the leadership and rule of the Communist Party,' Xi said.</p><br /><p>The tasks cover a broad range of issues. They include having SOEs contribute 30% of their profits to the state so it can fund the social-welfare programs the public is increasingly demanding, and significant easing of the one-child policy. Photo: AP</p><br /><p>Under the category 'building a modern market' - one of the 60 rubrics the document was divided into - the party says it will give the market the right to set prices and push forward with changes to the pricing of water, natural gas, oil, electricity, transportation and telecommunications.</p><br /><p>In terms of managing budgets and the relationship between the central and local levels of government, the document says Beijing's spending responsibilities should be enhanced.</p><br /><p>The decision listed several changes aimed at improving the rule of law. It vows that the judicial system will be better supervised and the constitution will be better implemented. Moreover, experiments in separating local courts from the local government will be carried out in response to rampant interference in rulings by officials. The ruling Communist Party also pledged to increase the transparency of court proceedings.</p><br /><p>The system of vertical management would also apply to prosecutors and party anti-corruption officials.</p><br /><p>The document also sketches out a detailed plan for improving protection of the environment. Audits of officials leaving their posts will now include a component on the condition of natural resources and the environment during their tenure.</p><br /><p>The list of decisions also said private institutions and companies should be encouraged to set up hospitals, doctors should be allowed to work in various hospitals, and medical insurance should be permitted to cover visits to private hospitals.</p><br /><p>Read this report on Caixin Online. Dubai Air Show: Boeing leads order books race

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71163000/jpg/_71163732_71163730.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Airlines in the Gulf have placed a number of high value plane orders on the first day of the Dubai Air Show, with US giant Boeing a major winner.</p><br /><p>Dubai-based Emirates airline placed an order for 150 of Boeing's new 777 mini-jumbos, in a $76bn (£47bn) deal.</p><br /><p>Other orders from Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Lufthansa for some 109 of the new 777, previously codenamed 777X, brought its sales total to $95bn.</p><br /><p>Emirates has also ordered 50 Airbus A380s, in a deal worth $23bn.</p><br /><p>The airline is already the biggest customer of the A380 and the new deal will bring its total orders for the plane to 140.</p><br /><p>And local rival Etihad Airways has also announced a firm order for 87 Airbus aircraft - some 50 A350 XWBs, 36 A320neo aircraft and one A330-200F as part of its fleet modernization strategy.</p><br /><p>The deal - valued at $19bn - includes options for 30 more planes.</p><br /><p>'Astounding'</p><br /><p>Boeing said its 777 mini-jumbo sales represented 'the largest product launch in commercial jetliner history by dollar value'.</p><br /><p>'The response to the 777X has been astounding,' Boeing chairman James McNerney added at the official launch the new plane in Dubai.</p><br /><p>The 777 will come in two models, one seating 350 passengers, and another seating 406 people.</p><br /><p>Boeing's new aircraft is designed to compete with the largest version of Airbus's A350 in the mini-jumbo market.</p><br /><p>European rival Airbus has launched a campaign for a minimum standard seat width of 18 inches on long trips, as it seeks to draw the focus of airlines to what it says will be the 777's narrower seats.</p><br /><p>Meanwhile, Airbus will be looking to sell more of its A380 super-jumbo aircraft, the world's biggest passenger aircraft, which is facing a potential cut in production unless some more orders are secured.</p><br /><p>UK Prime Minister David Cameron has visited the airshow site, with the UK competing with France for a potential 60-plane fighter jet deal with the United Arab Emirates.</p><br /></div>

But the moment was just a blip on the screen, during a night when Gaga rarely left the stage. Turns out that <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL</em> is an ideal showcase for one of Lady Gaga's greatest strengths as a performer: creating characters. The "Applause" singer, who once appeared on the show as a block of tofu, convincingly played an old lady, an awkward kid, a helicopter parent, a computer geek, a Blockbuster employee's fever dream, and the inspiration for Marisa Tomei's character in <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">My Cousin Vinny.</em> </div><div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px;">Lady Gaga was also one of the most self-deprecating hosts in recent memory, opening the show with a parody called "I'll Take Your Cheap Applause," pretending to a be a has-been version of herself, and even bringing up that old hermaphrodite rumor. (If you didn't catch the line "I got my tuck just right," then you have not been watching nearly enough <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">RuPaul's Drag Race.</em>) She's fearless on that stage, no matter what she's doing, and her presence seems to have inspired a heightened zaniness in the <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL</em> cast. R. Kelly showing up didn't hurt, either. Fortunately, Bobby Moynihan can do big. With his chins doubled and his voice raised half an octave, the comedian channels the disgraced mayor as he holds a series of disastrous press conferences. Ford tries to stealthily complete a drug deal during one appearance, only to blow his cover by shouting, "Whoa, that's a lotta crack!" During another, he drunkenly breaks into song and knocks down the podium with a swan dive. It's Bobby's impression that makes this one work; he takes the mayor's giggling, blustering, weirdly aggressive persona, and jacks it up a notch or ten. If people aren't comparing Moynihan to Chris Farley yet, prepare for them to start now.</div><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Waking Up with Kimye</strong><span style="background-color: white;"> – I don't know why it took six episodes for </span><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL</em><span style="background-color: white;"> to get around to a Kanye West/Kim Kardashian sketch, but </span><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Waking Up with Kimye</em><span style="background-color: white;"> was worth the wait. Nasim Pedrad and Jay Pharaoh absolutely nail the funniest thing about this pairing: Kanye's futile effort to make the world see Kim as an artistic genius like himself, despite all evidence to the contrary. "I've turned this woman into an artiste, a philosopher, an intergalactic icon of creativity," boasts Pharaoh's Kanye. "I'm also blonde now!" exclaims Pedrad, in her perfectly nasal Kardashian voice. During one segment of Kimye's fictional morning show, Kim holds up a macaroni necklace that she made. "Y'all hear that? She just changed the game! Food is jewelry now!" shouts Pharaoh, which is as funny as anything Kanye ever tweeted (and that's saying something). Gaga comes into the scene as Karen, a nerdy Apple Store employee whom Kanye berates for using the title "genius" without "earning" it. Karen is nonplussed by his criticism, particularly when he attacks her outfit. "Honestly, I don't care about fashion. I think people who try too hard with their outfits are maybe hiding something," says Gaga, smiling oh-so-sweetly into the camera.</span><span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /></span><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Whaat? The Worst Cover Songs of All Time</strong><span style="background-color: white;"> – Inspired by the Counting Crows' version of "Big Yellow Taxi," which somehow still gets radio play, Taran Killam (as Adam Duritz) introduces an anthology album of the worst cover songs of all time. Lady Gaga allows herself to be the punchline, presenting "Born This Way" as a "bad cover" of Madonna's "Express Yourself." But it's also a terrific excuse for the cast to bust out their most random musical impressions.  My dearest hope is that someone is now making a GIF of Aidy Bryant as Adele (covering "Theme from L.A. Law"). Also, whichever staff writer had the 3 a.m. idea of Lil Wayne (Jay Pharaoh) and Susan Boyle (Kate McKinnon) performing "We Didn't Start the Fire" deserves a pat on the back, and a nice long nap.</span><span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Paxil : Second Term Strength</strong><span style="background-color: white;"> – In the grand tradition of </span><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL </em><span style="background-color: white;">pharmaceutical commercials (see also: Excedrine for Racial Tension Headaches and Annuale for once-a-year periods), this one suggests a remedy for President Obama's slump. "It's the only antidepressant strong enough for an embattled second term," says the voiceover. "With Paxil, you'll feel like you're giving a speech at a college campus in 2008." There's a Republican-strength version, too.</span><span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Weekend Update: Famous Speech Critic Jebidiah Atkinson</strong><span style="background-color: white;"> – This bit is ripped from an unlikely headline: On Thursday, a Pennsylvania newspaper printed a retraction of its 1863 review of The Gettysburg Address. Taran Killam joins the Weekend Update Desk as Jedbidiah Atkinson, the unapologetic critic who panned Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech. (The "first draft" of his takedown begins "Four snores and seven yawns ago . . .") Even the President's appearance didn't impress him. "Too lanky, big nose, and don't get me started on that beard," he sniffs. "What was her name, Mary Todd?" It's endlessly fun to watch Killam lob bitchy one-liners at history's other famous speeches ("Give me liberty or give me death? Death, please.") It's even more fun to watch him try to keep a straight face after his final joke (a comment on FDR's "Day Which Will Live in Infamy" speech) goes utterly south. A missing line on the teleprompter, perhaps? Whatever happened, Taran ad-libbed his way out, and turned a sketch that could have been snide and </span><em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">New Yorker-</em><span style="background-color: white;">y into one that's legitimately hilarious…ass.</span><span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Old Lady Gaga</strong> – There's something extraordinary about watching a pop star at the height of her fame imagining her own descent into obscurity. It's so odd that the audience actually seemed conflicted about laughing; a few times during this sketch, they broke out into pitying "aww"s instead. Gaga plays an elderly future version of herself, now forgotten and living in a small apartment with only her Grammys to keep her company. Trying to jog building supervisor Kenan Thompson's memory, she plays "Poker Face" on the piano and holds some deli meat up against her neck ("Does this look familiar?"). Finally, she succeeds in impressing him by putting a telephone on her head. "Wait a minute – you know Beyonce? Empress Beyonce? All hail!" Thompson cries, wagging a "Single Ladies" finger in salute. Of everything she did tonight, this is the character who convinced me that Lady Gaga might have a future in acting. She brought legit pathos to this character; not something we see too often on <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL.</em></div><div style="line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px;"><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Enter The Rosé Zone</strong> – NFL RedZone is a channel entirely dedicated to the best moments from football games; <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">SNL</em>'s proposed ladies' version is dedicated entirely to the bitchiest moments from reality TV shows. "Let's face it: an hour of reality television has basically only three minutes worth watching," Cecily Strong points out, correctly. Aidy Bryant adds, "I don't care about their back stories – I want to see women destroy other women!" Honestly, I'm not even sure if I should be laughing, because I would watch the shit out of this channel. Fortunately, there's a real version. It's called <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The Soup.</em></div><span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">Given the cultural domination to which Lady Gaga aspires, it's inevitable that she'll try her hand at an acting career. Did tonight's hosting stint prove that she can do it? Not entirely. As a comedienne, Gaga hasn't quite tapped into that ferocity that she achieves when she's performing a song. Nevertheless, I like watching her, and she went to some risky places, rock-star ego be damned. Rookie fifth-round pick Sanders Commings is active for the first time in his NFL career for the biggest game of the Chiefs' season. Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem – New York Times [ BeritaTerkini ]

But now there is a new reason for supplement buyers to beware: DNA tests show that many pills labeled as healing herbs are little more than powdered rice and weeds. </p> <p></p> </div> <div class="articleInline runaroundLeft"> <p> </p> <div class="inlineImage module"> <div class="image"> <p><span><br><img alt="" height="98" src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/11/05/science/1105-HERBAL-FOR-FRONT/1105-HERBAL-FOR-FRONT-articleInline.jpg" width="190"></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="articleBody"> <p> Using a test called DNA barcoding, a kind of genetic fingerprinting that has also been used to help uncover labeling fraud in the commercial seafood industry, Canadian researchers tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 companies. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted — or replaced entirely — by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice. </p> <p> Consumer advocates and scientists say the research provides more evidence that the herbal supplement industry is riddled with questionable practices. Industry representatives argue that any problems are not widespread. </p> <p> For the study, the researchers selected popular medicinal herbs, and then randomly bought different brands of those products from stores and outlets in Canada and the United States. To avoid singling out any company, they did not disclose any product names. </p> <p> Among their findings were bottles of echinacea supplements, used by millions of Americans to prevent and treat colds, that contained ground up bitter weed, Parthenium hysterophorus, an invasive plant found in India and Australia that has been linked to rashes, nausea and flatulence. </p> <p> Two bottles labeled as St. John's wort, which studies have shown may treat mild depression, contained none of the medicinal herb. Instead, the pills in one bottle were made of nothing but rice, and another bottle contained only Alexandrian senna, an Egyptian yellow shrub that is a powerful laxative. Gingko biloba supplements, promoted as memory enhancers, were mixed with fillers and black walnut, a potentially deadly hazard for people with nut allergies. </p> <p> Of 44 herbal supplements tested, one-third showed outright substitution, meaning there was no trace of the plant advertised on the bottle — only another plant in its place. </p> <p> Many were adulterated with ingredients not listed on the label, like rice, soybean and wheat, which are used as fillers. </p> <p> In some cases, these fillers were the only plant detected in the bottle — a health concern for people with allergies or those seeking gluten-free products, said the study's lead author, Steven G. Newmaster, a biology professor and botanical director of the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph. </p> <p> The findings, published in the journal BMC Medicine, follow a number of smaller studies conducted in recent years that have suggested a sizable percentage of herbal products are not what they purport to be. But because the latest findings are backed by DNA testing, they offer perhaps the most credible evidence to date of adulteration, contamination and mislabeling in the medicinal supplement industry, a rapidly growing area of alternative medicine that includes an estimated 29,000 herbal products and substances sold throughout North America. </p> <p> "This suggests that the problems are widespread and that quality control for many companies, whether through ignorance, incompetence or dishonesty, is unacceptable," said David Schardt, a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group. "Given these results, it's hard to recommend any herbal supplements to consumers." </p> <p> Representatives of the supplement industry said that while mislabeling of supplements was a legitimate concern, they did not believe it reached the extent suggested by the new research. </p> <p> Stefan Gafner, the chief science officer at the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit group that promotes the use of herbal supplements, said the study was flawed, in part because the bar-coding technology it used could not always identify herbs that have been purified and highly processed. </p> <p> "Over all, I would agree that quality control is an issue in the herbal industry," Dr. Gafner said. "But I think that what's represented here is overblown. I don't think it's as bad as it looks according to this study." </p> <p> The Food and Drug Administration has used bar-coding technology to warn and in some cases prosecute sellers of seafood found to be "misbranded." The DNA technique has also been used in studies of herbal teas, which showed that a significant percentage contain herbs and ingredients that are not listed on their labels. </p> <p> But policing the supplement industry is a special challenge. The F.D.A. requires that companies test the products they sell to make sure that they are safe. But the system essentially operates on the honor code. Unlike prescription drugs, supplements are generally considered safe until proved otherwise. </p> <p> Under a 1994 law, they can be sold and marketed with little regulatory oversight, and they are pulled from shelves generally only after complaints of serious injury. The F.D.A. audits a small number of companies, but even industry representatives say more oversight is needed. </p> <p> "The regulations are very appropriate and rigorous," said Duffy MacKay of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement industry trade group. "But we need a strong regulator enforcing the full force of the law. F.D.A. resources are limited, and therefore enforcement has not historically been as rigorous as it could be." </p> <p> Shelly Burgess, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., said that companies were required to adhere to a set of good manufacturing practices designed to prevent adulteration, but that many were ignoring the rules. </p> <p> "Unfortunately, we are seeing a very high percentage — approximately 70 percent — of firms' noncompliance," she said, "and we are very active in taking enforcement actions against such violations." </p> <p> DNA bar coding was developed about a decade ago at the University of Guelph. Instead of sequencing entire genomes, scientists realized that they could examine genes from a standardized region of every genome to identify species of plants and animals. These short sequences can be quickly analyzed — much like the bar codes on the items at a supermarket — and compared with others in an electronic database. An electronic reference library at Guelph, called the International Barcode of Life Project, contains over 2.6 million bar code records for almost 200,000 species of plants and animals. </p> <p> The testing technique is not foolproof. It can identify the substances in a supplement, but it cannot determine their potency. And because the technology relies on the detection of DNA, it may not be able to identify concentrated chemical extracts that do not contain genetic material, or products in which the material has been destroyed by heat and processing. </p> <p> But Dr. Newmaster emphasized that only powders and pills were used in the new research, not extracts. In addition, the DNA testing nearly always detected some plant material in the samples — just not always the plant or herb named on the label. </p> <p> Some of the adulteration problems may be inadvertent. Cross-contamination can occur in fields where different plants are grown side by side and picked at the same time, or in factories where the herbs are packaged. Dr. Gafner of the American Botanical Council said that rice, starch and other compounds were sometimes added during processing to keep powdered herbs from clumping, just as kernels of rice are added to salt shakers. </p> <p> But that does not explain many of the DNA results. For instance, the study found that one product advertised as black cohosh — a North American plant and popular remedy for hot flashes and other menopause symptoms — actually contained a related Asian plant, Actaea asiatica, that can be toxic to humans. </p> <p> Those findings mirror a similar study of black cohosh supplements conducted at Stony Brook University medical center last year. Dr. David A. Baker, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine, bought 36 black cohosh supplements from online and chain stores. Bar coding tests showed that a quarter of them were not black cohosh, but instead contained an ornamental plant from China. </p> <p> Dr. Baker called the state of supplement regulation "the Wild West," and said most consumers had no idea how few safeguards were in place. "If you had a child who was sick and three out of 10 penicillin pills were fake, everybody would be up in arms," Dr. Baker said. "But it's O.K. to buy a supplement where three out of 10 pills are fake. I don't understand it. 'Junie B. Jones' author, Barbara Park, Dead at 66

Jones,' has passed away at age 66.</p><br /><p>Park died on Friday after a long battle with ovarian cancer, according to a statement released Sunday by Random House Books for Young Readers, ABC notes.</p><br /><p>Park lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, with her husband Richard and two sons.</p><br /><p>Park's books about a young, smart-mouthed, troublesome girl were not too far off from her own childhood experiences. The Sun reported that Park once confessed she too was a troublemaker, often finding herself in the principal's office.</p><br /><p>Park although extremely successful, found herself to be quite childish, once explaining, 'I don't have a problem being 6 years old in my head. It's almost embarrassing; if I'm talking to librarians or teachers who know my books and they say, 'How do you do this?' It's not a stretch.'</p><br /><p>In addition to writing the 'Junie B. Jones' series, Park wrote picture books, novels and even a Hallmark greeting card.</p><br /><p>Park lived a proud and passionate life. This data comes from the government's household survey that does not use a birth-death model. Although this data can be noisy, no additional inaccuracies should be present during recessions due to a faulty assumption model.<br /><br />As seen in the chart, these two surveys have been wildly diverging over the past year. The former says we're doing okay and the latter says we're doing terrible. What could account for all this <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bewilderment">bewilderment</a>? Let us hope it isn't because we're entering another recession just in time for the holiday season. Seriously.<br /><br />Keep in mind that you cannot see some of the past wild divergences in the chart all that clearly. Using the power of hindsight, <a href="http://www.bls.gov/web/empsit/cesnaicsrev.htm">the government revised them away</a>! It didn't exactly help <a href="http://www.advisorperspectives.com/dshort/updates/NYSE-Margin-Debt-and-the-SPX.php">high margin debt</a> stock market investors who were staring at the payroll data at the time though.
