<strong>Young Adult Librarian -</strong> <strong><strong><span style="color: #48286d;">New Canaan Library</span></strong></strong>.  The young adult librarian is passionate about connecting and building  relationships with adolescents in order to spark curiosity, fuel  discussion and enrich lives through the collections, services and  programs of the library. This is a permanent, full time position with  one weekend day and one evening per week serving the youth (13-18) of  our community. The position reports to the executive director and is a  member of the leadership team. New Canaan Library serves a community of  20,000 about 1 hour from NYC in Fairfield County Connecticut. Role  Purpose: This position is responsible for the planning, delivery and  evaluation of programs and services that meet the expressed and  anticipated needs of our young adult community. Responsibilities:  Actively participate in long range strategic planning for all of library  as well as youth area; Advocate for youth in the library; Develop and  grow an active teen advisory group; Create and contribute to services,  programs and collections that attract an increasing number of targeted  clientele (13-18 year olds); Collaborate with colleagues in the  Children’s and Adult services teams; Feed in to collection manager to  develop the YA collections; Seek out and form partnerships with other  relevant organizations in the local community; Maintain the teen area of  library website; Develop a productive relationship with the local  school librarians; Set goals, measure impact, for long term programming  and services; Provide information and readers advisory to target group;  Coordinate any volunteers in the YA area; Lead and participate in  project teems; Develop and maintain clear documentation for all programs  and services; Meet negotiated timelines and deadlines; Create  collateral to promote programs and services using relevant tools. Skills  and attributes: Empathetic with a genuine interest in youth, and an  understanding of adolescent development; Develops rapport easily with  teens; Focused on excellent user experiences for adolescents in the  library environment ( physical and virtual); Fluent user of social  media; Excellent communications skills; Confident and capable user of  internet/communications technologies; Deep and broad knowledge of YA  literature; Agile, able to adapt easily to a changing environment and  work on multiple projects simultaneously; Confident, outgoing and self  motivated; Personal commitment to ongoing professional development and  expertise in youth librarianship including currency on youth services in  libraries; Confident and effective public speaker; Both participates in  and leads in-house professional development with colleagues. It wants to make other energy producers in the region dependent on its good graces for the security of their energy exports. It wants to enhance its role as a supplier of military equipment, challenging the AMERICAN F-35 and F-22 with the new Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter among other things. It wants a free hand in dealing with terrorism among its Muslim minority in the CAUCASUS. It is not only that the RUSSIANS have returned to Egypt 40 years after they were expelled in the context of the real world war; they have done so in tactical alliance with SAUDI ARABIA, historically RUSSIA’S nemesis in the region.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">SAUDI ARABIA has an urgent interest in stabilizing EGYPT, and in suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood, which the SAUDI monarchy nightly views as a risk to its legitimacy. SAUDI support for the EGYPTIAN military against the Brotherhood is not surprising; what is most surprising is that the SAUDI’S felt to involve RUSSIA.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Although there are a number of obvious reasons for the SAUDI’S and RUSSIANS to collaborate, for example controlling the jihadists in the SYRIAN opposition, we do not yet understand the full implications of their rapprochement. The SAUDIS leaked news that they had offered to buy $15 billion worth of RUSSIAN weapons in return for RUSSIAN help with Assad. Rumors of this kind should not be read at face value. They might be misdirection — but misdirection towards what? </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Putin’s chessboard encompasses the globe. It includes such things as the security of energy exports from the PERSIAN GULF; the transmission of oil and gas through CENTRAL ASIA; the market for RUSSIAN arms exports; energy negotiations now underway between RUSSIA and CHINA; the vulnerability of EUROPE’S energy supplies; and the internal stability of countries on or near RUSSIA’S borders, including TURKEY, IRAQ and IRAN.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">RUSSIA’S GREATER CAPACITY TO INFLUENCE EVENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For AMERICAN analysts, most of this chessboard might as well be on the dark side of the moon. We see only what the RUSSIANS permit us to see. For example, Moscow first promised to provide SYRIA with the S-300 air defense system and then withdrew its offer. SAUDI ARABIA in early August let it be known that it was prepared to buy $15 billion of RUSSIAN weapons in return for considerations in SYRIA. A negotiation of some kind is underway, but we have no idea what kind of carrots and sticks might be involved.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">What we may surmise is that RUSSIA now has much greater capacity to influence events in the MIDDLE EAST, including the security of energy resources which it had at any time since the Yom Kippur War of 1973. For the time being, it is in RUSSIA’S interest to keep its interlocutory guessing, and to enhance its future strategic options. RUSSIA in effect has placed the burden of uncertainty on the rest of the world, especially upon major economies dependent on PERSIAN GULF energy exports.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #cc0000;">US TO FOCUS INCREASINGLY ON DOMESTIC AGENDAS</span> </b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">President Obama evidently considers this arrangement beneficial to his own agenda. The president has no interest whatever in enhancing AMERICA’S strategic position in the world; his intent may be to diminish it, as <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323595004579062811443943666.html" target="_blank">Norman Podhoretz</a> charged in the <em>Wall Street Journal.</em>Obama is focused on his domestic agenda.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">From that standpoint, handing over responsibility for the SYRIAN mess is a riskless exercise. AMERICAN popular revulsion over foreign military intervention is so intense that the voters will welcome any measure that reduces AMERICAN responsibility for foreign problems. Although the elite of the Democratic Party are liberal internationalists, Obama’s voting support has scant interest in SYRIA.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Public commentary on foreign policy is an exercise in frustration under the circumstances. Because AMERICA is a democracy, and substantial commitment of resources requires at least some degree of consensus, diplomacy was exceptionally transparent so long as AMERICA dominated the field. Think tanks, academia and the media served as a sounding board for any significant initiatives, so that important decisions were taken at least in part in the view of the public. That is no longer the case on Vladimir Putin’s chessboard. RUSSIA will pursue a set of strategic trade-offs, but we in the West will not know what they are until well after the fact, if ever.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Further dimensions of complexity will arise from the eventual response of other prospective players, in particular CHINA, but also including JAPAN. The self-shrinkage of AMERICA’S strategic position eliminates the constraint for RUSSIA to choose a particular option. On the contrary, RUSSIA can accumulate positional advantages to employ for particular strategic objectives at its leisure. And Putin will sit silent on his side of the chessboard and let the clock run against his opponent.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">STRATEGIC INSANITY </b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Putin may think that he is pre-empting a similar strategy on the part of the West. </div><div class="indent" style="text-align: justify;">From RUSSIAN leadership’s point of view, the IRAQ War now looks like the beginning of the accelerated destruction of regional and global stability, undermining the last principles of sustainable world order. No matter that SYRIA lacks oil reserves or other natural resources worth fighting over, their veto was more of a symbolic gesture telling WESTERN and GULF STATES coalition forces: that’s how far you can go this time around, but no further. The average non-retired American does not expect to retire until the age of 66, compared to 60 in 1995. Furthermore, 37 percent of those polled by Gallup say they expect to retire sometime after the age of 65, up sharply from 22 percent a decade ago and 14 percent in 1995. Meanwhile, only 26 percent say they will likely retire before age 65, down significantly from 49 percent in 1995.</span></blockquote></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fewer and fewer Americans are contributing to their retirement, and those who do don’t seem to have enough saved anyway. I let a few things out of the bag in that post! For one I exposed my weight to the entire world {or the 5 people who read my blog, lol!} to see! And secondly, you may have noticed one of my goals was to use My Fitness Pal to track my eats, where in the past I had used Weight Watchers. I'll get to MFP/WW later. Today I'm going to talk about that wretched # on the scale. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One of my goals was to weigh 181 by 9.30.13. Obviously if that is my goal you know that I currently weigh more than that. Yikes! That's a big number, but I plan to only make it smaller.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lets take a trip down memory lane. When I originally started this blog 5 years ago I was tipping the scales at 202. A month ago, on August 12th, I stepped on the scale knowing what I would see would not be pretty. 192.6. I was less than TEN pounds of being my highest weight {not counting when I was prego}. Time for a change!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That very day I changed how I was eating and did really well for 2 1/2 weeks. I lost 8.4lb in that time frame. Then my 29th birthday {my golden birthday!} rolled around and I splurged on some treats. The next day my wonderful husband threw me a surprise birthday party and I splurged even more. Then it was a long weekend with family in town and I got even more lax with my eats. And instead of getting right back on track after the long weekend it continued....until September 16th, something clicked that day!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><strong><u><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I needed to make a change...for good!</span></u></strong><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That brings me to where I began {again} this time last week!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Last Monday was my first day tracking my eats and making better choices. I didn't weigh till Tuesday. The verdict of eating terrible for 2 weeks: I gained almost 4lbs of my weight loss back. So disappointing! The only thing I could do at that point was to push forward and get rid of those 4lbs...and a whole lot more!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Back to my September goal. My goal is to weigh 181 on 9.30.13, if you do the math, is a 6.8lb loss. I know, sounds like a lot, but I also know its totally doable! <strong><u>I've got this!</u></strong></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A lot of people are ashamed of "that number" the scale says and I used to be, but honestly it doesn't bother me now. I know it doesn't define me. I've come face to face with it and I know what I need to do to change it! Wallowing in the pity of my chubby thighs & love handles covered with yoga pants & baggy sweatshirts will not help that number go down one bit! So I'm facing the facts, exposing it for the world to see, and can't wait to report to you how it will change over the coming weeks!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What's your view on that number on the scale?
