It didn't happen. Working conditions for most people in Colombia are worse than they were before the trade deal. (No surprise there.)<br /><br />The failure of the Colombian trade deal portends a similar outcome in Vietnam if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is approved. <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/08/vietnam-allows-forced-child-labor.html" rel="nofollow">Vietnam, one of the Pacific Rim countries involved in TPP talks</a>, tolerates squalid working conditions, poverty wages and child slavery.<br /><br />Eleven Colombian union leaders were murdered last year. At least that's better than the 22 union leaders murdered with impunity the year before. But threats, assaults, and disappearances are reportedly on the rise, according to the report.<br /><br />Worse, violence is escalating against human rights workers. In the first six months of this year, 37 human rights defenders were murdered in Colombia and 153 were attacked.<br /><br />The so-called benefits of so-called free trade have not flowed to ordinary Colombians. Indigenous people are being thrown off their land. <a href="http://truth-out.org/news/item/16737-the-horrific-costs-of-the-us-colombia-trade-agreement" rel="nofollow">Farmers' livelihoods are threatened</a> by a surge of subsidized agricultural products from the United States. In the port city of Buenaventura, gruesome dismemberments and murders drove 9,000 poor people from their home. Misery and violence prevail.<br /><br />The two congressmen visited Colombia in August to see whether the action plan was working. They arrived in the middle of social unrest:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Colombian farmers took to the streets and went on strike, joined by miners, truckers, public health care workers, students and others. The reasons for the strike given by many included: high fuel prices, expensive agrichemicals, government neglect of rural areas, and the free trade agreement with the United States. </blockquote>They concluded the trade deal has made life worse for most Colombian workers:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">...individuals have been murdered in 2013 and death threats continue. Friday Morning's Commute Looks Wet, Windy

There's a mixture of good news and not-so-good news for you this morning in the weather department.<br /><br />First, Halloween looks dry and mild for those who are looking to get out and get candy, or accompany the young ghost, goblin, or assorted costume character (please for the love of humanity, avoid going as Miley Cyrus). There could be a shower or two out towards Harrisburg or up towards Scranton but for those of us here, should be dry and mild.  Temperatures will likely be in the 60's tomorrow night for a good chunk of the evening with a mild southwesterly breeze. That mass of rain and isolated thunder moves in after Midnight tomorrow night, pushing through for the morning commute before departing. In addition to the rain will be an increasing breeze on Thursday night as winds at 5000 feet up will push above 70 miles per hour, higher north and west of the city, towards daybreak Friday. Those winds don't all transpose to the surface but in heavier showers we could see some 40-50 mile per hour gusts, perhaps a bit higher on ridge tops in the Poconos. That said, there's enough wind energy with this storm system despite the timing to probably get some 40+ mile per hour wind gusts with the frontal squall as it moves through.<br /><br />Rainfall should average out to about a half an inch regionwide, a bit more north than south.<br /><br />Temperatures on Friday morning could be in the mid, perhaps upper, 60's across a large chunk of the region. This may help us pull off a second 70 degree day in a row to start November as tomorrow looks like we should get to 70 in the city.

JMU Marching Band headed to Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Virginia's James Madison University Marching Dukes will be one of only two college bands performing in the 2013 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade held annually in New York City. JMU first participated in the parade in 2001 and again in 2008, and will be sending 485 band members this year.<br /><br />Band Director Scott Rikkers told <a href="http://www.whsv.com/news/headlines/JMU-Marching-Band-Practices-for-Macys-Thanksgiving-Day-Parade-229803681.html">WHSV TV-3</a>: <br /><blockquote>"This will be our third time in the parade. We went for the first time in 2001, second time in 2008, and this will be our third appearance on the 20th of November. There are two college bands in the parade, and we are marching 485. We're probably one of the largest college bands in the country, which we're very proud of, but we're going because we really want to represent James Madison University. What we're just trying to do is create the best, most entertaining performance for the audience, and also again to represent the quality of our program and the school so that's what we focus on, and bottom line, the kids are going to have a great time."</blockquote>At our house we always watch the parade from the kitchen while preparing Thanksgiving dinner.
