There are many things that Putin wants. But he wants one big thing above all, namely, the restoration of RUSSIA’S great power status. RUSSIA’S leading diplomatic role in SYRIA opens several options to further this goal.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">WORLDS ENERGY BROKER </b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As the world’s largest energy producer, RUSSIA wants to enhance its leverage over WESTERN EUROPE for which it is the principle energy supplier. It wants to influence the marketing of natural gas produced by ISRAEL and other countries in the EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN. It wants to make other energy producers in the region dependent on its good graces for the security of their energy exports. It wants to enhance its role as a supplier of military equipment, challenging the AMERICAN F-35 and F-22 with the new Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter among other things. It wants a free hand in dealing with terrorism among its Muslim minority in the CAUCASUS. It is not only that the RUSSIANS have returned to Egypt 40 years after they were expelled in the context of the real world war; they have done so in tactical alliance with SAUDI ARABIA, historically RUSSIA’S nemesis in the region.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">SAUDI ARABIA has an urgent interest in stabilizing EGYPT, and in suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood, which the SAUDI monarchy nightly views as a risk to its legitimacy. SAUDI support for the EGYPTIAN military against the Brotherhood is not surprising; what is most surprising is that the SAUDI’S felt to involve RUSSIA.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Although there are a number of obvious reasons for the SAUDI’S and RUSSIANS to collaborate, for example controlling the jihadists in the SYRIAN opposition, we do not yet understand the full implications of their rapprochement. The SAUDIS leaked news that they had offered to buy $15 billion worth of RUSSIAN weapons in return for RUSSIAN help with Assad. Rumors of this kind should not be read at face value. They might be misdirection — but misdirection towards what? </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Putin’s chessboard encompasses the globe. It includes such things as the security of energy exports from the PERSIAN GULF; the transmission of oil and gas through CENTRAL ASIA; the market for RUSSIAN arms exports; energy negotiations now underway between RUSSIA and CHINA; the vulnerability of EUROPE’S energy supplies; and the internal stability of countries on or near RUSSIA’S borders, including TURKEY, IRAQ and IRAN.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">RUSSIA’S GREATER CAPACITY TO INFLUENCE EVENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For AMERICAN analysts, most of this chessboard might as well be on the dark side of the moon. We see only what the RUSSIANS permit us to see. For example, Moscow first promised to provide SYRIA with the S-300 air defense system and then withdrew its offer. SAUDI ARABIA in early August let it be known that it was prepared to buy $15 billion of RUSSIAN weapons in return for considerations in SYRIA. A negotiation of some kind is underway, but we have no idea what kind of carrots and sticks might be involved.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">What we may surmise is that RUSSIA now has much greater capacity to influence events in the MIDDLE EAST, including the security of energy resources which it had at any time since the Yom Kippur War of 1973. For the time being, it is in RUSSIA’S interest to keep its interlocutory guessing, and to enhance its future strategic options. RUSSIA in effect has placed the burden of uncertainty on the rest of the world, especially upon major economies dependent on PERSIAN GULF energy exports.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #cc0000;">US TO FOCUS INCREASINGLY ON DOMESTIC AGENDAS</span> </b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">President Obama evidently considers this arrangement beneficial to his own agenda. The president has no interest whatever in enhancing AMERICA’S strategic position in the world; his intent may be to diminish it, as <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323595004579062811443943666.html" target="_blank">Norman Podhoretz</a> charged in the <em>Wall Street Journal.</em>Obama is focused on his domestic agenda.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">From that standpoint, handing over responsibility for the SYRIAN mess is a riskless exercise. AMERICAN popular revulsion over foreign military intervention is so intense that the voters will welcome any measure that reduces AMERICAN responsibility for foreign problems. Although the elite of the Democratic Party are liberal internationalists, Obama’s voting support has scant interest in SYRIA.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Public commentary on foreign policy is an exercise in frustration under the circumstances. Because AMERICA is a democracy, and substantial commitment of resources requires at least some degree of consensus, diplomacy was exceptionally transparent so long as AMERICA dominated the field. Think tanks, academia and the media served as a sounding board for any significant initiatives, so that important decisions were taken at least in part in the view of the public. That is no longer the case on Vladimir Putin’s chessboard. RUSSIA will pursue a set of strategic trade-offs, but we in the West will not know what they are until well after the fact, if ever.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Further dimensions of complexity will arise from the eventual response of other prospective players, in particular CHINA, but also including JAPAN. The self-shrinkage of AMERICA’S strategic position eliminates the constraint for RUSSIA to choose a particular option. On the contrary, RUSSIA can accumulate positional advantages to employ for particular strategic objectives at its leisure. And Putin will sit silent on his side of the chessboard and let the clock run against his opponent.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">STRATEGIC INSANITY </b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Putin may think that he is pre-empting a similar strategy on the part of the West. </div><div class="indent" style="text-align: justify;">From RUSSIAN leadership’s point of view, the IRAQ War now looks like the beginning of the accelerated destruction of regional and global stability, undermining the last principles of sustainable world order. The notion that incompetence rather than conspiracy explains the vast majority of AMERICAN actions is foreign to RUSSIAN thinking. I let a few things out of the bag in that post! For one I exposed my weight to the entire world {or the 5 people who read my blog, lol!} to see! And secondly, you may have noticed one of my goals was to use My Fitness Pal to track my eats, where in the past I had used Weight Watchers. I'll get to MFP/WW later. Today I'm going to talk about that wretched # on the scale. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One of my goals was to weigh 181 by 9.30.13. Obviously if that is my goal you know that I currently weigh more than that. Yikes! That's a big number, but I plan to only make it smaller.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lets take a trip down memory lane. When I originally started this blog 5 years ago I was tipping the scales at 202. A month ago, on August 12th, I stepped on the scale knowing what I would see would not be pretty. 192.6. I was less than TEN pounds of being my highest weight {not counting when I was prego}. Time for a change!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That very day I changed how I was eating and did really well for 2 1/2 weeks. I lost 8.4lb in that time frame. Then my 29th birthday {my golden birthday!} rolled around and I splurged on some treats. The next day my wonderful husband threw me a surprise birthday party and I splurged even more. Then it was a long weekend with family in town and I got even more lax with my eats. And instead of getting right back on track after the long weekend it continued....until September 16th, something clicked that day!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><strong><u><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I needed to make a change...for good!</span></u></strong><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That brings me to where I began {again} this time last week!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Last Monday was my first day tracking my eats and making better choices. I didn't weigh till Tuesday. The verdict of eating terrible for 2 weeks: I gained almost 4lbs of my weight loss back. So disappointing! The only thing I could do at that point was to push forward and get rid of those 4lbs...and a whole lot more!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Back to my September goal. My goal is to weigh 181 on 9.30.13, if you do the math, is a 6.8lb loss. I know, sounds like a lot, but I also know its totally doable! <strong><u>I've got this!</u></strong></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A lot of people are ashamed of "that number" the scale says and I used to be, but honestly it doesn't bother me now. I know it doesn't define me. I've come face to face with it and I know what I need to do to change it! Wallowing in the pity of my chubby thighs & love handles covered with yoga pants & baggy sweatshirts will not help that number go down one bit! So I'm facing the facts, exposing it for the world to see, and can't wait to report to you how it will change over the coming weeks!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What's your view on that number on the scale? <p> Friday we took a tour of the Georgia Tech campus as my daughter went for a college day. While my son is already a freshman there, this is my daughter's time and her decision. A study group of 4 of us met three days a week at 7pm here as we worked through freshman calculus together. Now it is all computers. Many of them - as you can see, have double monitors. </p> <p>There's a place on the back wall that shows where open computers are, but there are likely a hundred or so in this brightly lit atrium area. Interestingly, every incoming student is required to have a computer, but this is a place to go to work for serious business.</p> <h1>We still need desktop computers</h1> <p>There is still a place in our academic world for desktop computers- even when we have laptops. A place to sit still with our work. While Iike to draft with my laptop sitting in my chair in the den (I feel more creative there) when I get down to work, it is in the office on my trusty Lenovo m90z touchscreen with the huge screen and ergonomically correct desk chair.</p> <h1>A space to work, a place to work</h1> <p>An ergonomically big "place to work" is still needed. I did like how the computers were not slammed right up against each other but included a place to spread out papers, books, etc. </p> <p>Of course many of these students were dealing with CAD drawings and writing programs, but I have programmers in my classroom too. My student with the Raspberry Pi computer hooks it up to the big monitor in my room and uses the wireless dongle to use the big keyboard, etc. as he programs this tiny $35 motherboard. Just the workspace gives him room to think. A large screenspace is important when researching, working, and creating.<br></p> <p>Just because everyone has laptops doesn't mean you don't need pumped up workstations - especially if we're doing the kind of STEAM work we need to be with students.</p> <h1>We still need a quiet cubicle</h1> <p>But where I got really jealous was when they mentioned the third through fifth floors -- full of quiet cubicles, this is where you go to be alone and get work done. </p> <p>You can't see a reflection upon choppy water. It is often when things get very still and quiet, that we can start reflecting upon things around us and dive deep into thought. <br></p> <p>The tyranny of noise surrounds us. If we're at school - the voices and distractions and general hubbub make it a challenge to focus. If we're at home - the phone ringing and countless things to handle. </p> <p>I remembered the days - becoming more distant now - when I'd find a quiet cubicle on the fifth floor of the Georgia Tech library where I could be left alone for hours to "get work done." And man, could I get some work done. Time flowed like water through a fountain as I let it flow until the job was done. I started rethinking my own office envious of the serenity of those cubicles.</p> <h1>Libraries are vital</h1> <p>Libraries are important places. We have more diverse needs than ever upon these common spaces: computers, quiet places, teaching commons areas, workrooms for groups, cocoons for reading, places to check out digital creation equipment, maker spaces, places for conversations with a book club and more I'm probably forgetting now. We need more libraries with TV studios/ green screens and quiet rooms to record audio. We need more space, not less.</p> <p>Our libaries are important. Every time I hear of another one being cut, I ponder the short sightedness of people that don't understand the increasing importance of good teaching librarians, digital resources, and learning commons. When a person closes a library, it is most often due to lack of vision not lack of need that it happens.
