It’s been clear  to us that <a href="http://ecowatch.com/2013/05/22/could-federal-bill-lead-death-plastic-bags/">plastic bag recycling</a> does  not work and this is more proof. While the plastics industry and  manufacturers often push for curbside recycling because of the  convenience, the message to take certain items back does not work  without a financial incentive.</b></span></span></div><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Here’s an except from the <a href="http://www.dailyjournal.net/view/story/5501d61fdc79422bba3c0f9936bc7f0c/CA--Plastic-Bags-Forgotten-Law/#.UnFfJySvyKM">AP report</a> the the <em>Daily Journal</em>: </b></span></span><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b></b></span></span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Stores are required to submit annual reports detailing how many bags  were bought by the store, how many were returned by consumers and which  recyclers processed them, yet the state recycling department cannot say  how many stores are complying. While the law allows for fines if stores do not comply, no  violations have been issued.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>The AP report focuses on <a href="http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/05-06/bill/asm/ab_2401-2450/ab_2449_bill_20060930_chaptered.pdf">AB 2449</a> which  was passed by California legislators in 2006, then the plastic bag  recycling portion was extended until 2020 by legislators in 2012  through <a href="http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201120120SB1219">SB 1219</a>. AB 2449 was a bit controversial at the time because many environmental groups were pushing for a stronger bill to address <a href="http://ecowatch.com/2013/08/06/the-danger-of-plastic-bags-to-marine-life/">plastic bag litter and associated impacts</a>.  AB 2449 included a provision that prevented local communities from  putting a fee on plastic checkout bags so the local response has been <a href="http://www.surfrider.org/pages/plastic-bag-bans-fees">65 plastic bag ban ordinances</a> and counting.</b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Most recyclers don’t want to deal with plastic bags and film because  they can ‘gum up’ the machinery that processes more profitable items  such as plastic bottles and aluminum cans. They’d turn their backs on her, literally. When she did come home, it didn’t stop, because it doesn’t, these days. They name-called her by text, then online. She’d log onto Facebook and get abuse. Then onto that awful site Ask.fm and be subjected to filth."<br /><br />14 yr old Izzy committed suicide on September 17th. Neighbours tried to revive Izzy while she ‘just took off’.<br /><br /><div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; overflow: hidden; text-align: left;">‘It’s all a blur. At one point I ran into a car. Selfie While Driving? Your Life is Worth More Than a Like

<div class="MsoNormal">Usually there is an element of sarcasm in these posts, but today I know what you’re thinking:  Nobody is stupid enough to take a selfie while driving.  You would think so, but you would be wrong.  According to Yahoo, there are more than <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/selfies-with-a-splash-of-serious-safety-issues-142045416.html">three million Instagram posts</a> labeled #driving and even more with variations of the tag.  Apparently, to many folks their lives are worth a few likes.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">While the dangers of texting while driving are pretty clear, according to Distraction.gov you are <a href="http://www.distraction.gov/">twice as likely</a> to crash while texting, the selfie phenomenon is another battle.  Of course, your personal feelings of cell phone use while driving come into play as well, because like or not when you are doing something besides driving you are distracted.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">For those that think they can handle texting while driving <a href="http://www.itcanwaitsimulator.org/">the simulator</a> on It Can Wait is a nice teaching tool.  The selfie issue is just another form of the battle, and it is quite simple to answer:  it only takes a split second to change your life or someone else’s forever.  A car, truck, van or whatever can be turned into a weapon in that split second, and that great self portrait won’t look so great when you know it helped get a family killed.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Everyone, not just the kids and teens, needs to be aware that the technology we all love to use has a limitation, no matter how second nature firing off a text might or taking a picture might be, it is dangerous to use behind the wheel-plain and simple.  <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">Anyone that really wants to take a great selfie should include the tag #GotHereSafely, because those would be comments worth reading.  Again, life is worth more than a like, but you have to pay attention to realize that.<o:p></o:p></div>
