Weinstein Co. wins MPAA appeal to overturn R

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://www.trbimg.com/img-528414d5/turbine/la-et-mn-philomena-mpaa-rating-20131113-001/599" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>This time, Harvey Weinstein seems to have gotten what he wanted.</p><br /><p>It was less than a week ago that his Motion Picture Assn. of America, slamming the organization for assigning the studio's upcoming release 'Philomena' an R rating. Now, just a few days later, the MPAA has downgraded the rating to a Weinstein Co. declared war -- yet again -- on the PG-13 -- prompting the Weinstein Co. to send out a news release touting its victory in the appeal.</p><br /><p>'Philomena,' which stars Judi Dench as a woman trying to locate a son she was forced to give up for adoption 50 years earlier, was initially given an R because it included two utterances of the F-word. To speak out against the MPAA's decision last week, Dench filmed a FunnyorDie video assuming the character she played in the James Bond series, MI5 chief M.</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: Celebrities by The Times</strong><br /><p>The clip went viral, scoring publicity for a low-profile film and perhaps contributing to the rating change. At least, that's what Weinstein seemed to think, on Wednesday crediting the 'victory to Barbara Broccoli, producer of the James Bond series, Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes who because of their relationship with Judi Dench gave permission to spoof the ratings system using the M character.'</p><br /><p>Weinstein, of course, is no stranger to ratings controversies. In 2011, he unsuccessfully tried to appeal an R rating -- again for language -- for his eventual best picture winner 'The King's Speech.' After the movie won the Oscar, the studio re-released a PG-13 version of the Colin Firth picture so that younger audiences could see it.</p><br /><p>Meanwhile, last year Weinstein generated much publicity for his documentary 'Bully,' which was also given an R-rating for language even though it was a movie aimed at teenagers. THR has word that Pratt is in early talks to join <strong>Jurassic World</strong>, the fourth sequel in the dinosaur action adventure franchise at Universal Pictures. And yet again, Pratt would be the film's male lead, a rugged former soldier who is at odds with Bryce Dallas Howard, who is playing a corporate scientist. This is the role that producers offered to Josh Brolin, but a deal didn't pan out. Read on!</p><br /><p>Since talks are early, there's still a chance that Pratt might not take the part. Though we don't have anymore plot details, we do have word that previously cast young stars Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins will both be playing Howard's nephews. We just want a basic plotline so we know what's going to happen in the sequel on some level. Rumors have pegged Jurassic World being a theme park already open with dinosaurs populating it, making it a star attraction, but of course, something goes wrong and people are put in danger. She was 94.</p><br /><p>Mitchell died of heart failure on Monday, her sister-in-law Nancy Olson told the website on Wednesday. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://www.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/20131014/rs_560x415-131114061614-560-bestmanholiday-jc.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>We've seen this picture before-but it's still a merry good time.</p><br /><p>So say the critics, the majority of whom embraced the Christmas spirit embodied by The Best Man Holiday, director <strong>Malcolm D.</strong> <strong>Lee</strong>'s sequel to his 1999 African-American rom-com hit, The Best Man.</p><br /><p>Despite taking issue with its many story contrivances, what stood out for most reviewers were the winning performances of its reunited cast including , <strong>Sanaa Lathan</strong>, <strong>Nia Long</strong>, <strong>Morris Chestnut</strong>, <strong>Melissa De Sousa</strong>, <strong>Harold Perrineau</strong>, <strong>Regina Hall</strong> and <strong>Terrence Howard</strong>.</p><br /><strong>NEWS: Early Catching Fire reviews are in</strong><br /><p>A Big Chill-like reunion filled with humor and heart, the comedy-drama also offers up a big dollop of mawkishness, a boy band number (!), and a soundtrack slew of Christmas classics that strikes just the right sentimental note and should make The Best Man Holiday a stocking stuffer for years to come.</p><br /><p>Here's a roundup of the mostly positive reviews:</p><br /><strong>NEWS: The critics are mixed on Thor: The Dark World</strong><br /><p>* 'It's shamelessly manipulative. It's about 15 minutes too long, having, by my count, three separate endings. And yet despite all that, The Best Man Holiday is disarmingly heartwarming,' praises The Seattle Times. 'The key to the picture's appeal is the sincerity of the performances. The actors play their characters with such depth of feeling that they make even the most clichéd and hokum-drenched situations resonate with unexpected levels of emotional authenticity.'</p><br /><p>* 'The conclusions are familiar-friendship provides support, death makes squabbles seem petty, what's past is past-but far from meaningless,' observes The A.V. Club.</p><br /><p>* ' The Best Man Holiday...will probably be fun and pleasant for those who saw the first film. The script's sporadic silliness makes every plot turn questionable; how the talent deftly negotiates such goofiness makes the film near-impossible to resist,' offered Time Out New York.</p><br /><p>* 'The Best Man Holiday reunites the characters for a Christmas-weekend house party, and what ensues is like a better-written <strong>Tyler Perry</strong> movie: too many life crises rooted in too much recycled backstory...[It's] an eggnog that's sticky-sweet and heavy at the same time,' declared Entertainment Weekly.</p><br /><p>On the other hand, was a bit of a scrooge in its pan of the film, noting: 'The ending couldn't be more contrived, but again, it's a Christmas movie, and we all have our favorite flavors of seasonal schmaltz. Comedian Andy Kaufman 'faked his death', brother claims

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71107000/jpg/_71107333_71107332.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Cult comedy star Andy Kaufman faked his own death in 1984 and is still alive, his brother has claimed.</p><br /><p>Kaufman, best known for playing the incompetent Latka Gravas on the 1970s sitcom Taxi, officially died from lung cancer in 1984.</p><br /><p>But, appearing at an award show named in Andy's honour, Michael Kaufman said he received a letter from his brother, confirming he was alive, in 1999.</p><br /><p>He then introduced a woman who claimed to be Andy's 24-year-old daughter.</p><br /><p>Her age would mean she was born five years after his death.</p><br /><p>'He just wanted to be a stay-at-home dad, that's why he wanted to leave the showbiz,' she explained.</p><br /><p>'He's pretty much a great dad, and raised us. My mom has her own business... He helps her with that kind of thing, paperwork and stuff, so he can work from home and he doesn't have to be hiding out [or] concealing himself.'</p><br /><p>'He just makes us food and takes care of the house.'</p><br /><p>Her arrival had been preceded by a long anecdote, in which Michael described how, many years ago, he discovered an essay in which Andy detailed plans to fake his death.</p><br /><p>It was accompanied by a note, saying the comedian would reappear on Christmas Eve 1999, in a specific restaurant.</p><br /><p>Although Andy failed to show up, Michael was handed a letter explaining that his brother had gone into hiding to live a normal life, and now had a wife and daughter.</p><br /><p>Audience 'freaked out'</p><br />'Start Quote<br /><p>It was chilling, upsetting and absolutely intriguing'</p><br /><p>End Quote Killy Dwyer, audience member</p><br /><p>In addition to his role on Taxi, Andy Kaufman was an eccentric performance artist who often staged elaborate pranks that entertained, confused and at times frustrated his fans.</p><br /><p>He organised wrestling matches between himself and women, impersonated Elvis Presley and, most famously, created a hideous lounge singer alter-ego called Tony Clifton, who reeked of foul-smelling cheese and verbally abused virtually everyone in sight.</p><br /><p>And, famously, after he played Carnegie Hall, he hired 24 buses and took the 2,800 audience members out for milk and cookies.</p><br /><p>A life-long health fanatic, he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 33 and died in May 1984. A copy of his death certificate, which lists the cause of death as renal failure, can be seen online.</p><br /><p>Nonetheless, a portion of his fanbase has always maintained his death was a hoax.</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71109000/jpg/_71109768_12aa427f-d7e9-479c-a62e-caead98d49df.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Audience members at the Andy Kaufman Awards were uncertain how to take Michael's revelation, wondering if it, too, could be a stunt.</p><br /><p>'The entire room was freaked out,' wrote comedian Killy Dwyer on her Facebook page.</p><br /><p>'I get that it is - could - might all be a hoax.... [but] it was as real as anything I've ever seen. There is video. It was chilling, upsetting and absolutely intriguing.'</p><br /><p>Award show producer Al Parinello told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I witnessed the entire thing and I can tell you without a doubt this was not a prank.'</p><br /><p>'You could see by the look on [Michael's] face that it had an emotional impact on him,' said Ed Cavanagh, manager at the Gotham Comedy Club, where the award show took place.</p><br /><p>But, he added: 'I don't know whether somebody is perpetrating something on [Michael] or not. I'm truly 50-50 on this one.'</p><br /><p>Witnesses said the unnamed woman had explained the catalyst for her appearance was the death of her grandfather, Andy's father, in July.</p><br /><p>In a video of the encounter, posted on gossip site TMZ, Michael is seen asking whether his brother is 'getting close to revealing himself'.</p><br /><p>The woman covers her face and says, 'I don't know what to say.'</p><br /><p>'I mean, he was really thinking about coming,' she adds.</p><br /><p>Michael then asks the audience not to follow the woman after she left the building.</p><br /><p>'I won't give you her name. Now that the album is done, I'm finally going to shower.'</p><br /><p>The 'Stan' rapper revealed he spent a lot of his free time working on projects for his own record label 'Shady Records'.</p><br /><p>He states, 'I did the 'Recovery' album then I started working on some side projects for Shady Records, the label.'</p><br /><p>'I did some producing on a Yellow Wolf album and the Slaughterhouse album.' Adding, 'I did a collaboration album with Royce tha '59 called Bad Meets Evil. 'I just did a song [with him],' he said. '[Justin] just called me to do a song and it's hot. He wanted to do some R&B stuff so we got together and did that.'</p><br /><p>Bieber confirmed the track was coming by tweeting, 'next week.'</p><br /><p>The song will likely be the seventh release in Bieber's '#MusicMondays' series following tracks like 'All Bad' and 'Bad Day.'</p><br /><p>Bieber also teased an upcoming collaboration with Drake, tweeting, '@Drake They aren't ready.'</p><br /><p>R. The song, critics charged, sounded stunningly similar to Madonna's 1989 hit <i>Express Yourself</i>.</p><br /><p>Madge later fanned the flames after she performed a mashup of <i>Born This Way</i> and <i>Express Yourself</i> during her <i>MDNA</i> tour last year.</p><br /><p>Gaga shared her thoughts on Madge's decision to cover her music during a recent interview with <i>Attitude</i> magazine.</p><br /><p>'I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night!' she told the mag.</p><br /><p>'I mean, Madonna's ... she's Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I'm not quite sure what her intention was - to do that in the show, but I don't really care,' she said.</p><br /><p>'I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that's just not what I'm about. She chooses to use her voice the way she chooses to use hers and I choose to use mine the way I use mine.'</p><br /><strong>'...ONE DAY I WOULD PISS OFF MADONNA!'</strong><br /><p>Rather than packing a sad about Madge's apparent diss, Gaga said she was happy to ruffle the singer's feathers.</p><br /><p>'All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I'm 27! And as a punk-rocker from New York, I've basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would piss off Madonna!' she said.</p><br /><p>During a lengthy sit-down with Stern on Tuesday, the 27-year-old singer didn't hold back when probed by the host about her Madonna beef.</p><br /><p>'There's not so many ways you can interpret it,' chimed Gaga when Stern suggested jealousy was behind Madge taking thinly veiled potshots at her.</p><br /><p>'To me honestly I think she's more aggravated that I'm not upset that she doesn't like me. Because I don't care that she doesn't like me. No, I don't care,' she shared.</p><br /><p>On the subject of her public falling out with gossip blogger Hilton, the <i>ARTPOP</i> singer went on to say the proverbial hit the fan back in 2011.</p><br /><p>'I don't really care anymore. It's so ridiculous at this point. It's such nonsense,' she said of her spat with Hilton, who was once one of Gaga's most vocal cheerleaders.</p><br /><p>'The whole thing is really rooted in Madonna, that's the sort of centre of it and nobody's really said that or admitted to it,' Gaga explained.</p><br /><p>'It's silly. There's always this pissing match, 'Did she take her torch?' [and] 'Is she the new her?' 'Is she going to outlast her?' ... There's this thing with some people that I'm a threat to the throne,' she said.</p><br /><p>'And I don't want your f***ing throne, no thanks. And I have my own and I don't actually want a throne at all, because I don't view myself as a queen. I view myself as one of my fans, and that's it.'</p><br /><p>Gaga then explained why her long-time friendship with Hilton ended.</p><br /><p>'What happened was we were doing an interview...and in the middle of the interview he started asking me really terrible questions,' Gaga told to Stern.</p><br /><p>'He was being very negative about <i>Born This Way</i> and we had had a lot to drink. He was supposed to be my friend and I felt betrayed, so I started crying. My friend had to come in and pull the camera out, they wouldn't turn the cameras off.'</p><br /><p>She continued, 'He apologised, but I sort of felt like it was like, 'But I'm Perez Hilton so I'm allowed to treat you this way.' I looked at him and said, 'Just because you are who you are, does not mean that our friendship doesn't mean anything when the cameras turn on. So, now I see who you really are.' And I was done after that.</p><br /><p>'And he's just mad that I don't want to hang out anymore. I don't want to be around fake people. I really believed, when I first met him, that he wanted to change. I really believed that he wanted to bully people less on his site and that he wanted to move into a more positive space. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/i/2013/11/08/lone-survivor-mark-wahlberg.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Mark Wahlberg has never been one to shy away from the truth.</p><br /><p>Even so, at the premiere of Lone Survivor at the AFI Festival Tuesday night in Los Angeles, the veteran actor and producer shocked the audience with his candor about his role in Lone Survivor, an adaptation of Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell's account of his Navy SEALS mission in Afghanistan in July of 2005, which director Peter Berg recreates with harrowing, explicit, and relentless precision.</p><br /><p>When Wahlberg took the stage with Berg and Petty Officer Luttrell after the credits rolled for a brief Q&A, he looked distraught and distracted. After Luttrell explained how he and Berg teamed up for the film, the moderator turned to Wahlberg to ask about his rigorous training and the rough shoot. Wahlberg looked visibly pained by the question and started on what would become an almost five-minute monologue. 'For actors to sit there and talk about 'oh I went to SEAL training'? I don't give a f-ck what you did. You don't do what these guys did. For somebody to sit there and say my job was as difficult as being in the military? How f-cking dare you, while you sit in a makeup chair for two hours,' Wahlberg said.</p><br /><p>He continued: 'I don't give a sh-t if you get your ass busted. You get to go home at the end of the day. You get to go to your hotel room. You get to order your f-cking chicken. Whatever the f-ck it is. People talk about what do we do to bond the way that those guys bonded. We just knew what they did. It didn't matter. I didn't have to say a word to Emile [Hirsch] or a word to Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster...who's my brother even though he's the kind of actor who wants to continuously debate the debate and everything else...and I love him for it. I gave him half my salary...whatever I gave him...to do it because I knew how great he was and for us to be on that mountain together and in the end I could just look at him and it would break my heart knowing that that's my brother and I may never see him again. But it just seems like so much more than that.'</p><br /><p>'I've done the movies where I talk about God. I trained for four and a half years and I was 'The Fighter' and f-ck all that. It really means nothing. I love Marcus [Luttrell] for what he's done and I'm a very lucky guy to do what I do and I'm proud to have been part of it, but it's just so much bigger than what I do. I love Pete [Berg] for what he did and how committed he was,' he said. 'He would never let any one of us forget about what was important in the course of making the movie and whether it was Marcus or the other SEAL guys, if they saw something that didn't ring true, I don't care if it was going to be the biggest stunt sequence in the movie, they would cut, call bullsh-t, and grab all of us by the f-cking neck and say 'no do it this way, and do it right and make it real' and if you don't it's a problem. I was really proud to be a part of that.'</p><br /><p>Wahlberg finished by saying, simply: 'I'm sorry for losing my sh-t. Don't ask any more questions tonight.'</p><br /><p>Berg attempted to lighten the mood by grabbing Wahlberg's arm and reassuring the audience that it had been a long night, to which Wahlberg replied 'no, it's just getting f-cking started. I'm going to find my f-cking second wind and we're going to celebrate this f-cking movie. But don't ask me any more questions.'</p><br /><p>Lone Survivor opens in select theaters on Dec. 27, and in wide release on Jan. 10, 2014.</p><br /></div>

Francis Bacon painting sells for record $142.4M at auction

The painting was sold for $142.4 million to an unidentified buyer Tuesday, making it the most expensive painting ever sold at auction (AP Photo/Christie's)</p><br /><p>A 1969 painting by Francis Bacon has set a world record for most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.</p><br /><p>'Three Studies of Lucian Freud' was purchased for $142,405,000 at Christie's postwar and contemporary art sale on Tuesday night. The triptych depicts Bacon's artist friend.</p><br /><p>The work sold after '6 minutes of fierce bidding in the room and on the phone,' Christie's said in a statement. The price includes the buyer's premium. Christie's did not say who bought the painting.</p><br /><p>The price surpassed the nearly $120 million paid for Edvard Munch's 'The Scream,' which set a world record when it was sold at Sotheby's in a 2012 sale.</p><br /><p>The previous record for Bacon's artwork sold at auction was his 1976 'Triptych.' That sold for $86 million in 2008.</p><br /><p>Among other highlights scheduled to be auctioned at Christie's is a bright orange-yellow and white oil painting by Mark Rothko. Reminiscent of a radiating sunset, the 1957 large-scale 'Untitled (No. 11)' could fetch up to $35 million. In May 2012, Christie's sold Rothko's 'Orange, Red, Yellow' for $86.8 million, a record for any contemporary artwork at auction.</p><br /><p>Christie's also has an iconic Andy Warhol, 'Coca-Cola (3),' estimated to sell for $40 million to $60 million. The Warhol auction record is $71.7 million for 'Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I),' sold in 2007.</p><br /><p>On Wednesday evening, Sotheby's is offering Warhol's 'Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster),' a provocative double-panel painting that could bring as much as $80 million.</p><br /><p>Warhol produced four paintings in the 'Death and Disaster' series. The other three are in museums.</p><br /><p>Measuring 8 feet by 13 feet, the 1963 silver work captures the immediate aftermath of a car crash, a twisted body sprawled across its mangled interior. It has been seen in public only once in the past 26 years.</p><br /><p>Other blue-chip offerings at Christie's on Tuesday include Jeff Koons' whimsical 'Balloon Dog (Orange),' a 10-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture resembling a twisted child's party balloon. It is expected to sell for up to $55 million. It is one of five balloon dogs Koons has created in different colors. All are in private hands. It is being sold by newsprint magnate Peter Brant to benefit his Brant Foundation Art Study in Greenwich, Conn.</p><br /><p>Also on tap is a masterpiece by German painter Gerhard Richter from the collection of Eric Clapton. Painted in gold and orange hues, the 1994 'Abstract Painting' is estimated to bring as much as $20 million. Richter's photo-based 'Cathedral Square, Milan' brought $37 million at Sotheby's in May, setting a record for any living artist at auction.</p><br /><p>Roy Lichtenstein's 'Seductive Girl' could bring up to $28 million. The artist auction record is $56 million for 'Woman With Flowered Hat,' sold at Christie's in May.</p><br /></div>

Tonight's outing featured the first official The Vampire Diaries crossover as Tyler ( <strong>Michael Trevino</strong>) made his New Orleans debut and he was on a freakin' mission. In a dark, dark twist, Ty totally down to kill Hayley ( <strong>Phoebe Tonkin</strong>) and her unborn baby to exact revenge on Klaus ( <strong>Joseph Morgan</strong>). And raise your hand if you were literally squealing with delight during Tyler and Klaus' long-awaited faceoff, which revealed that Tyler was basically on a suicide mission after losing everything important to him. Of course, knowing he wanted death, Klaus let him live, compelling him to never forget that he 'means nothing' to him. However, as cops cited the new mum for the offence, the snappers hopped out of their own cars, leaving them in the middle of the road, as they photographed the Keeping Up with the Kardashians beauty receiving a ticket. The incident caused long lines of traffic to start building up on the freeway, prompting authorities to turn their attentions to the offending members of the paparazzi, although they were only able to fine one snapper for speeding before those involved managed to get away, reports TMZ.com. The incident is currently under investigation, but it's not the first time photographers have caused chaos for Kardashian - she lashed out at those tailing her every move in June (13) after accusing them of putting her life and that of her then-unborn daughter at risk with their dangerous driving. Taking to Twitter.com, she wrote, 'Yesterday 4 cars boxed me in. One in front, behind, & one on each side just to have me drive at their speed so they can snap through the window. Its (sic) really so scary what they are legally allowed to get away with!' The British singer premiered the music video for 'Hard Out Here' on Tuesday, Nov. 12, which will serve as the first single from her currently untitled third studio album.</p><br /><p>In typical fashion, the 28-year-old musician critiques the state of pop culture in her comeback ditty. The video begins with Allen, now a married mother of two, lying on an operating table as a team of plastic surgeons makes 'improvements' to her body. 'We need some more off her stomach and then maybe some more off her legs,' one doctor says.</p><br /><p>Simultaneously, a manager-type delivers some bad news regarding her upcoming press tour. 'Oh, honey. Letterman says no,' he tells Allen, who looks quite like <strong>Jessie J</strong> in the clip. 'What about Kimmel?' the singer asks. Without looking up from his phone, he tells her, 'Don't worry; we'll get you fighting fit.'</p><br /><strong>NEWS: Hear Lily Allen duet with Pink on 'True Love'</strong><br /><p>Looking at Allen's body, he then says, 'Jesus, how does somebody let themselv'es get like this, huh?'</p><br /><p>'A lack of self-discipline, I suppose,' one surgeon suggests. By the second verse, she recites some of the criticisms she's often forced to address as a public figure. 'You should probably lose some weight, 'cause we can't see your bones/You should probably fix your face, or you'll end up on your own,' she sings.</p><br /><p>The chorus is both catch and controversial. 'Forget your balls and grow a pair of t-ts,' she croons over a bouncy melody.
