American Idol Voting Season 13 : The New Math!

But how many people could that really have been? With <a href="http://www.americanidol.com/faq" target="_blank">voting caps</a> finally placed this year, I thought I would try to figure out the minimum and maximum number of people who could have generated those 71 million votes using all the different ways to vote, and assuming people were not using multiple Facebook accounts. Google accounts, cell phones to text or phone numbers for calling the 800 numbers. For simplicity's sake I will assume one person has one Google account, one Facebook account, one texting cell phone number and one different land line or other voice number they can use to dial the 800 number.<br /><br />Another point is that for each voting method you can vote up to 50 times for each contestant, which means 13 x 50 = 650 votes for each method, but why would anybody vote 50 times for all 13 contestants? That does not help any of them. In reality you can now vote to try to eliminate some particular contestant by voting 50 times for everybody else except that particular undesirable person. For this week, that meant placing 50 votes for 12 of the contestants , or 600 votes cast using each of the four methods (the mobile app and Facebook share the same 50 vote per contestant limit.) That would mean 2400 votes cast in total by this one voter to try to eliminate one contestant. If we divide the "71 million votes" Ryan proclaimed by 2400 votes, the number amazingly drops to about 30,000 people.<br /><br />I doubt too many people will actually vote that many times, but I can easily see people voting at least for five contestants using both Facebook and Google (the fastest and easiest ways). I personally only voted using Google for five of the contestants and it took me maybe a minute to cast 250 votes. So if I had voted using Facebook too for the same five contestants (50 votes each) that would have been 500 votes I could have cast in just a few minutes. If we divide those 71 million votes by 500 that is still only 142,000 people. From the approximately 10 million people who watched the show, that would be a measly 0.14% actually bothering to vote. And I did not even watch the show myself!<br /><br />Even if people were voting for just one contestant, I am sure if they voted via Google, they would also vote via Facebook (or the mobile app) which means 100 quick votes for that one person. Text messaging would be pretty fast for one person just 50 times, and even the 800 voice calling 50 times would not take that long. I remember when I was voice dialing the toll-free numbers back in Season 9 (go Crystal Bowersox!) I could get out about 5 calls in about a minute, so voting 50 times via voice line for a contestant should only take 10 minutes. So I cannot imagine anyone who cared enough to vote would vote less than 100 votes to any contestant. That would set the maximum number of people voting to be 71 million divided by 100 or 710,000. Would anyone really just vote once or twice by phone and then stop?<br /><br />The other big question is how many die hard fans would use multiple Facebook or Google accounts, or multiple cell phones or land lines to vote? How much is the vote skewed by just a small number of people who would place thousands upon thousands of votes using multiple accounts and numbers? I do not think Idol could track, for example, if someone was voting from different cell phones with different carriers and different Facebook/Google accounts all at the same time. There are too many permutations people can use, borrowing other people's phones and accounts to vote multiple times.<br /><br />The bottom line? That "71 million votes" number is completely meaningless (as if we did not already realize that.) I would, however, love to see the actual data that comes in from all the votes and see how the votes are all distributed. I think that would be fascinating!

Blame it on lower sales now than in 2010 and also releasing the album at the end of February instead of the beginning of November when a lot other albums are being released. After Candice's performance on the show last night in front of millions of viewers, hopefully a large number of them will be impressed enough to go buy a copy of "Music Speaks". If she is lucky she may actually peak higher than #14, we will have to wait and see.<br /><br />Interestingly two other American Idols popped back onto the chart, two other ladies to give Candice some company. Mandisa's "Overcomer" re-entered again (it has done so several times) which was #198 two weeks ago, off the chart last week and #167 this week. Carrie Underwood's 2012 release "Blown Away" also decided to re-enter the chart at #189. It was released about 22 months ago but still selling -- amazing!<br /><br />The other three Idols on the chart (six total this week!) are the same three guys from last week. Daughtry's "Baptized" again leads the guy Idols at #90 (from #99 last week), a nice improvement for him. And Scotty McCreery's "See You Tonight" is holding perfectly steady with a second week at #107. Ruben Studdard's "Unconditional Love" is sliding a bit however, from #106 last week to #141 in its third week.

So I thought I should take a quick look at what actually happened last night. I think <a href="http://www.dialidol.com/" target="_blank">DialIdol</a> is pretty useless now that power voting is limited and the number of people calling with analog telephones has become pretty insignificant, especially at these early rounds. Instead I just took a look at the <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-xiii-top-13-recap-videos.htm" target="_blank">brief synopsis from MJsBigBlog</a> to catch up more more quickly. It sounds like the show did not actually kick into gear until the second half of the performances. From what I saw and from the two polls on MJ's, there are still quite a few contestants who can be easily eliminated without losing much talent on the show, but there are others that actually show some promise. I really do not mind if she goes, but I could easily see it being Dexter or Malaya too, or even CJ or Ben. All of those named are pretty expendable at this point without much of a chance of winning. It would be nice if we could just get rid of all five of those contestants to give more air time for the others who might still have a shot of winning and having a real musical career.

But this wisdom must be tempered with the acceptance that Afghanistan is now an Afghan problem, and if their elected President is not interested in accommodating U.S./NATO requests on security guarantees .... we must accept this position and leave. My prediction .... Afghan President Karzai will not sign this security agreement .... but the man who will replace  him after this spring's election will.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.ynaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Seun-Aderinwale.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Seun-Aderinwale" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-250844" height="640" src="http://www.ynaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Seun-Aderinwale.jpg" width="548" /></a></div><blockquote><em></em></blockquote>A 15-year-old boy, Seun Aderinwale, was said to have been traded for two bags of rice valued at N2o,ooo at  Igando in Alimosho area of Lagos State.<br /> According to sources, the yet-to-be identified man reportedly went to Igando to buy two bags of rice from a shop owned by a woman identified as Iya Ibrahim.<br /> The woman was not available at the time but her son, identified as Ibrahim, agreed to the man’s proposal to drop Seun who is an apprentice at an aluminium shop, as collateral, to collect the bags of rice and return later to make payment.<br /> <em>PM News <a href="http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/02/26/boy-15-exchanged-for-2-bags-of-rice/" target="_blank">reports</a>:</em><br /><em></em><br /><a name='more'></a><em> </em><br /> <blockquote><em>However, when the shop owner returned in the afternoon, she was surprised to see Seun who was dropped there in exchange for the two bags of rice taken away by the unidentified man.</em><br /> <em>When the man failed to return, the 15-year old was held hostage until evening when the pastor of his church, a Celestial Church of Christ around the area, saw him at the shop looking despondent.</em><br /> <em>When Seun was questioned on how he came about the fraudster, he said he met him casually at Hotel Bus Stop about 300 metres to his residence where a church member had sent him on an errand to play lotto, popularly known as “Baba Ijebu”.</em><br /> <em>Seun said he did not know the man’s house or have other information about him.</em><br /> <em>The teenager later regained his freedom when the Celestial Church pastor, known simply as Oluso in the neighborhood, settled the matter with Iya Ibrahim, the rice seller.</em><br /> <em>He said the woman should take responsibility for one of the stolen bags of rice while Seun’s father, a co-worker with him in the church, should pay for the other bag of rice when he returned from his trip to Ifo in Ogun State. Seun’s  father agreed to pay N10,000 for the bag of rice when he returned from Ifo.</em><br /> <em>P.M.NEWS learnt that the rice seller agreed to the pastor’s proposal and did not report the matter to the police.</em><br /> <em>“If I report the incident to the police, I cannot leave the station without spending money. Therefore, it is better for me to accept the proposal by Oluso, the rice seller told residents who gathered in front of her shop to watch the drama.</em><br /> <em>When Ibrahim was questioned why he allowed such an unusual arrangement, he told residents that the conman asked for two and half bags of rice, adding, “when the motorcycle was about to go with the two bags, I asked for the money but Seun assured me he was coming back for the half bag. He even claimed to be a close relation of the man.”</em><br /> <em>However, some hours after the man had disappeared and failed to return, Ibrahim said Seun retracted his earlier statement, saying he did not know the man.</em></blockquote>
