It seems like everywhere you look on the TV there are more American Idols. From Kelly Clarkson's Christmas special, to Scotty McCreery's ACA Breakthrough Artist win, to Carrie Underwood as Maria Von Trapp, to Adam Lambert as Elliot "Starchild" Gilbert on Glee. And those appearances help to add up a lot of album sales for all the Idol alumni. Leading the group again is Kelly Clarkson, who just had her NBC special on Wednesday, so those numbers will not be reflected until next week. Nevertheless her Christmas album continues to sell like hotcakes, adding another 112K in sales to pop back up to #3 on the chart, even ahead of the debut by Britney Spears. That brings her total to 442K in just six weeks. Next week she should definitely end up well over half a million in sales.

Country superstar Carrie Underwood has two albums on the chart this week. Despite her now 84 week old album "Blown Away" dropping to #98 from #33 last week, the soundtrack to her "Sound of Music" special debuts at #17 with 38K in sales. Continuing in the "two albums on the chart"merriment is the other star country Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, who sees his "See You Tonight" album at #70 with 9K in sales (137K total) and his "Christmas With Scotty McCreery" at  #116 with 7K in sales (375K total.) If the trend continues his year old Christmas album might outsell his newer studio album in the next couple weeks, just because it has more mass appeal (i.e. there are more fans of Christmas music than fans of country music.) In fact if we compare the sales of Scotty's albums, CWSM sold much quicker than SYT. The good news for "See You Tonight" is that its sales will continue into 2014 if Scotty can continue to receive more radio play and more concerts and TV performances.

I was curious so I even compared the first six weeks of Kelly's Grammy winning and platinum selling "Stronger" album with the sales of her current "Wrapped in Red" album. There is not much comparison. HitsDailyDouble is estimating sales of 130K-140K for her holiday album next week (post TV special) so I added 130K to the chart, and it is amazing how much faster it is selling than "Stronger" ever did in the fall of 2011. Of course, in two more weeks its sales will pretty much end (until holiday season 2014), but by then it will have become a Christmas 2013 bestseller.

There are three other Idols on the chart, and interestingly none of the others were "winners" despite having strong selling albums today. Daughtry's "Baptized" continues strong at #44 in its third week, Mandisa's "Overcomer" holds steady at #182 in its 15th week, and Kellie Pickler's "The Woman I Am" even popped back into the Top 200 chart at #194 in its fourth week.
