http://ftw.usatoday.com Game 3 of the World Series between the Cardinals and Red Sox ended in a 5-4 Cardinals win thanks to one of the oddest walk-off plays in World Series history.
With runners on second and third with one out, Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay grounded a ball to Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was drawn in to try to prevent the runner from third from scoring the winning run. Pedroia fired home in plenty of time to get Yadier Molina at home, but Allen Craig tried to advance from second to third on the throw home. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia threw to third base to try to catch Craig, but overthrew the bag. Craig then tried to run home, but tripped over third baseman Will Middlebrooks. Craig, who recently returned from a foot injury that sidelined him late in the season and early in the playoffs, stumbled home but appeared out at the plate by several steps. Only the umpires ruled that Middlebrooks interfered with Craig on his trip home, giving the Cardinals a walk-off win.
(PHOTO: Eileen Blass/USA TODAY Sports)Red Sox manager John Farrell contested the call, but it appeared to be the correct one. Regardless of intent, Middlebrooks clearly got in Craig’s way as he tried to run home. It’s not the way the Cardinals drew it up, certainly, but the rules are the rules.
