The weatherman didn’t even have the decency to be embarrassed at missing by that much. Just warned us that the roads were treacherous and to stay home if we didn’t have to go anywhere. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Luckily though it was just snow though and there wasn’t any sleet or freezing rain. Better than that, it was the really soft snow that doesn’t pack down. It was super easy to clear the car off and snow plows out on Sunday night and some salting left the roads in good shape on Monday. So, with a storm of indeterminate size coming tomorrow followed by bitterly cold weather and more snow on Thursday, Friday and maybe Saturday, I decided I should hit up Walmart. Today it was announced that the Glen Oaks Branch Library in Queens, New York, designed by Marble Fairbanks, is the American-Architects <a href="http://www.world-architects.com/en/pages/page_item/building-of-the-year-2013-found/">2013 Building of the Year</a>. The three-story building (two floors above grade, one floor below) is covered in glass, both clear panes and translucent channel glass. It included the news that a company called <a href="http://www.australianbitcoinatms.com.au/" target="_blank">Australian Bitcoin ATMs</a> would be distributing ATM machines all over the country.<br />The  report didn’t give away many specifics about the project or the  company, and the brand of the ATMs wasn’t mentioned. CEO Chris Guzowski  said:<br /><blockquote>“You can type in how many bitcoins you want to  sell, then our ATM goes onto an overseas bitcoin exchange and executes  that transaction for you and will spit out the cash for which you sold  the bitcoin for. And the opposite also applies, so you can put cash in  and purchase bitcoin.”</blockquote>This information suggests that the ATMs will be two-way, and the image on the company’s website shows they’re likely to be <a href="https://robocoinkiosk.com/" target="_blank">Robocoin</a> machines.<br />The interview also quoted David Glance from the University of Western Australia’s <a href="http://www.csp.uwa.edu.au/" target="_blank">Centre for Software Practice</a> as saying it will take more than ATMs to facilitate mass adoption:<br /><blockquote>“I  think that until you see the National Australia Bank or the  Commonwealth or one of the major banks getting behind the currency,  providing simplified access to it, I think it’s always going to be a  niche,” he said.</blockquote><h2>Banks and regulators</h2>In fact, National Australia Bank (NAB) has done just that already. After the Commonwealth Bank <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/commonwealth-bank-closes-coinjars-business-and-founders-personal-accounts/">shut down</a> business and personal accounts belonging to Melbourne-based payment processor <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/australia-bitcoin-exchange-coinjar-venture-funding/">CoinJar</a> and its founder, NAB <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/australia-banks-bitcoin/">approached</a> the company with an offer to help it manage its bitcoin affairs.<br />NAB also published a mostly-positive internal <a href="http://www.coindesk.com/australian-bank-report-bitcoin-replace-dollars/">research paper</a> on bitcoin for FX traders, saying that while bitcoin did not meet the  legal definition of a ‘currency’, it is everything a currency is  supposed to be: durable, portable, fungible and divisible.<br />Australian  regulators have not issued any formal guidelines on bitcoin just yet. The following chart shows the natural log of the combined total of <span style="color: red;">religious construction</span> spending, <span style="color: red;">sewage and waste disposal construction </span>spending, and <span style="color: red;">amusement and recreation construction</span> spending all divided by disposable personal income. So much so that President Obama devoted an entire speech regarding the National Security Agency on January 17th. The agency, which has been in existance since 1952 is tasked with the global monitoring, collection, decoding, translation and analysis of information and data for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes, including surveillance of targeted individuals in U.S. territories. Later the same month <i>The Guardian</i> published Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court documents which outlined the NSA's procedures for minimizing its collection of domestic communications. Some of the most startling revelations in the files is that the NSA can store domestic communications containing: foreign intelligence information; evidence of a crime; threats of serious harm to life or property; or any information that could aid the agency's electronic surveillance, which includes encrypted communications.<br /><br />Futher concerning information was revealed when Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald delivered the keynote lecture of the "Socialism 2013" conference in Chicago. The program that collects information from the fiber optic cables that carry most Internet and phone traffic.<br /><br />In August a network of 500 servers scattered across the globe that collect "nearly everything a user does on the Internet" and store it in databases searchable by name, email, IP address, region and language was released by <i>The Guardian</i>. In the same month a change was made to data minimization rules that could potentially allow the NSA to view American citizens' data without a warrant under section 702 of the 2008 FISA Amendment Act. To further explain Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said, "Once Americans' communications are collected, a gap in the law ... allows the government to potentially go through these communications and conduct warrantless searches for the phone calls or emails of law-abiding Americans."<br /><br /><i>The Washington Post</i> published two documents revealing how the NSA violated U.S. laws and its own internal regulations 2,776 times between March 2011 and March 2012. Most of these violations were accidents or technical errors, but others were less benign. It was also revealed that the NSA spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year paying private companies for access to large fiber optic communications backbones - part of the agency's Corporate Partner Access Project. Shortly there after the National Security Agency declassified three secret court opinions showing that within just one of its surveillance programs it scooped up as many as 56,000 emails annually over the span of three years, by Americans not connected to terrorism.<br /><br />In September a collaboration among <i>The Guardian</i>, <i>The New York Times</i> and <i>ProPublica</i> revealed "the NSA has cracked methods of encryption used by millions of people every day for things such as secure email, e-commerce, financial transactions and more." German news source <i>Der Spiegel</i> revealed that although narrowly targeted, "the NSA has the ability to tap into data - including emails, contacts, notes and physical location - from all the major smart phones on the market."<br /><br />At the end of September, a response was issued to a request from Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) in which the NSA's Office of the Inspector General released details of the 12 "substantiated instances" of "intentional and willful" misuse of NSA surveillance authority since January 2003. Most involved so-called "love intelligence" - LOVEINT, in agency parlance - where agents spied on current or former love interests.<br />The New York Times reported that the NSA uses Americans' data — including phone and email metadata, as well as information from social media and financial transactions — " to create maps of targets' social connections but according to an agency spokesperson, "this data is only used when there is "a foreign intelligence justification." The report also showed that "intelligence agencies used a vulnerability in an older version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser to implant surveillance software on some TOR users' computers when they visited specific websites." The Washington Post published documents revealing the NSA collected over 250 million email inbox views and contact lists a year from online services like Yahoo, Gmail and Facebook. According to their report, it collects the data in bulk from massive fiber optic cables that carry most of the world's telephone and Internet traffic and because the NSA carries this surveillance out outside the United States, it falls outside the jurisdiction of many laws meant to protect the privacy of American citizens.<br /><br />In November <i>The New York Times</i> published an article which featured excerpts from an internal agency document from 2012 stating, "the NSA wants to expand its already broad legal authority. It also plans to "influence the global commercial encryption market" through partnerships with tech firms and its own spies within private tech companies. Its end goal, according to the document, is accessing data from "anyone, anytime, anywhere" it needs."<br /><br /> Back in December a major collaboration among <i>The Guardian</i>, <i>The New York Times</i> and <i>ProPublica</i> was published and revealed the NSA, the Pentagon, the FBI and GCHQ had been monitoring online games played by millions of people worldwide. Is it right that we are all guilty until proven innocent? Is it really to protect us or are we all just reenacting various scenarios from the 1998 film <i>Enemy of the State</i> where, among other things, "the U.S. Congress moves to pass new legislation that dramatically expands the surveillance powers of intelligence agencies.."  The definition of an enemy of the state is, "a person accused of certain crimes against the state, such as treason. Zimmerman is planning to fight in a celebrity boxing match and is on the lookout for an opponent for his March 1st fight. The highly controversial fight is being promoted by Damon Feldman and comes on the heels successfully capitalizing on his celebrity status in December by auctioning a flag painting on eBay, selling the artwork for just over $100,000.<br /><br />Although the money from the fight is allegedly going to charity, the specific charity will not be named. “I’d love to tell you [the charity] but unfortunately there’s so much animosity still from people out there, that if I name the charity now they would get bombarded with negativity, so I’d rather not, I’ll leave it up to them to say if they want it to be publicized or not. But I will tell you that it’s an animal rescue."<br /><br />Speaking of animosity, a few celebrities have already spoken out on taking up Zimmerman on his challenge, specifically to prove a point. Rapper The Game said, "I would not be boxing for me.  I’d be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and for his family. He continued, I would box him to knock him out…I would definitely take pleasure in it.  It’s legal, and I want to show him you can solve your disputes without a weapon.” Rapper DMX also commented on the getting in the ring with Zimmerman saying that he wants to fight him for " every black person who has been done wrong in the system." DMX continued on saying, "I am going to beat the living f**k out him … I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I f**k him right up." "Once I am done with him, I am going to whip my d**k out and piss on him ... right in his muthaf**kin face." "Zimmerman is a piece of s**t and that’s what he needs to drink."<br /><br />News of the fight is not only being met with animosity from celebrities but from those who found injustice with the verdict of the 2012 murder trial during which prosecutors accused Zimmerman of profiling, following and shooting Martin, who was a guest in a gated neighborhood in the town of Sanford, Florida as Martin was returning from a trip to a convenience store to buy Skittles and iced tea. Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watch captain at the time of the shooting claimed self defense and in July 2013 was acquitted by a jury of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in Martin's death.<br /><br />A comment left by user Andigravity on <i>ChicagoTribune.com</i> read, "Well, that's nice. I mean, some people might be contrite about the fact they murdered a teenager and do something outlandish, like try their best to blend back into a quiet life, but it takes someone of real character and principle to turn the event into the kind of ongoing, attention-grabbing, money-grubbing farce that George Zimmerman has. And now Mr. "I had to shoot him because I don't know how to punch people back" is planning on making a spectacle of himself by volunteering to get into a ring and beat someone up... why? Just to spit all over Trayvon Martin's grave and prove to everyone he and his lawyers played the Florida judicial system for suckers by claiming he was too helpless to fight back using any other means by stepping up and proving he's perfectly capable of doing so? What's next? A series of paintings collectively entitled "If I planned to kill him and make it look like an accident, here's how I would have done it?"<br /><br />Another comment left by Perry Tomfoolery said, "Sidenote, all of a sudden He's "not new to boxing" after his defense under oath was based on him NOT being able to defend himself.... Which one is it?"<br /><br />Ultimately the question that lies at the root of it all isn't one of race but of morality. Seattle took home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time defeating the Denver Broncos in a 43-8 rout before 82,529 fans.<br /><br />Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning managed to set records for both touchdowns and yards during the regular season and picked up his fifth MVP award on Saturday. It was the Seahawks though, who were No. 1 in both points and yards allowed, who finished on top in the battle of the best defense vs. the best offense in the biggest blowout since the Cowboys crushed the Bills 52-17 back in 1993.<br /><br /> Within the first 12 seconds of the game, Manning stepped out of the shotgun formation and moved toward center Manny Ramirez and what happened next is still trying to be explained. Ramirez inexplicably snapped the ball over Manning's head causing it to sail into the end zone, and ganering Seattle a safety. It only got worse from there with the Bronco's ball being picked off twice during the first half which included Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith's 69-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter, as well as defensive end Cliff Avril hitting Manning's arm as he released the ball, gave Seattle a stunning 22-0 lead to end the half. After sitting out the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin was a big part of their offensive game plan. He not only had two sweet runs in the first half, a 30-yard rush around left end and a 15-yard sweep he then ran back the kickoff to open the second half 87 yards for a touchdown taking Seattle to a 29-0 lead against Denver.<br /><br />Denver finally got on the board during the third quarter when Manning hit Thomas for a 14 yard touchdown pass and then connected with Wes Welker for the two-point conversion making the score 36-8. During the final quarter Russell Wilson threw five straight passes, the fifth of them being the 10-yard touchdown to Doug Baldwin, which gave Seattle a 43-8 lead and ultimately ended the game.<br /><br />Manning had this to say of the loss, "I've worked hard to get to this point, overcame a lot of obstacles to be here.
