Charles Evans, the president of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, said earlier on Tuesday that the central bank may need to wait until next year, possibly until March, before beginning to wind down its massive bond-purchase program.</p><br /><p>Cautious forecasts from Best Buy (BBY.N) and Campbell Soup Co (CPB.N) gave investors a reason to sell some stocks. Best Buy shares slid 11 percent to close at $38.78, while Campbell Soup (CPB.N) fell 6.2 percent to $39.21.</p><br /><p>The Dow briefly rose above 16,000 but failed to close above that level for the second day. The S&P 500 retreated further from the 1,800 level it hit on Monday. Despite the two-day decline, the S&P 500 is still up about 25 percent for the year. The benchmark index is on track for its biggest yearly gain since 2003.</p><br /><p>'The last couple of days have been a bit choppy, signaling a top here, but the market is extremely resilient to any bad news and funds continue to flow into stocks and risky assets from bonds and fixed income,' said Tim Ghriskey, who helps manage more than $1.5 billion as chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management LLC.</p><br /><p>The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI slipped 8.99 points, or 0.06 percent, to end at 15,967.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX declined 3.66 points, or 0.20 percent, to finish at 1,787.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC dropped 17.51 points, or 0.44 percent, to close at 3,931.55.</p><br /><p>Best Buy is cutting prices for the holiday season to thwart fierce competition from Wal-Mart and other discount and online rivals, a move that it warns will hurt margins for the current quarter.</p><br /><p>Campbell Soup, the world's largest soup maker, also cut its full-year profit forecast after a drop in demand for its soups and drinks resulted in first-quarter earnings that fell far short of analysts' estimates.</p><br /><p>But a recovery in the U.S. housing market helped Home Depot (HD.N) exceed profit and sales estimates for the third quarter, prompting the No. 1 home improvement chain to raise its fiscal-year outlook for the third time this year.</p><br /><p>The stock gained 0.9 percent to end at $80.38 after hitting a lifetime high of $82.25.</p><br /><p>The S&P 500 has more stocks up so far this year than in almost any other year since 1980, according to Frost Investment Advisors.</p><br /><p>'221 stocks in the index are up more than 30 percent. In fact, it has been over 530 trading days now since the stock market has seen the 10 percent correction that many predicted over the last 529 or so days,' Frost Investment said in a note to clients.</p><br /><p>On Wednesday, minutes from the Fed's October meeting are scheduled to be released. At that meeting, the Fed decided to stick with its bond-buying program. Investors have been bracing for a pullback from the stimulus program since the summer.</p><br /><p>'I'd say there's a very low probability the Fed does anything between now and the end of the year,' said Dan Veru, chief investment officer of Palisade Capital Management, which has $4.5 billion in assets and is based in Fort Lee, New Jersey.</p><br /><p>Tesla Motors (TSLA.O) shares rose 3.7 percent to $126.09 in a volatile session. U.S. traffic safety regulators launched an investigation into the luxury electric sports car maker's Model S sedan after three car fires in six weeks.</p><br /><p>About 5.8 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, slightly below the five-day average closing volume of about 6.1 billion, according to BATS exchange data.</p><br /><p>On the New York Stock Exchange, decliners beat advancers by a ratio of slightly more than 2 to 1. According to festival director Geoff Ellis, the team behind T in the Park confirmed the band’s slot in response to an audience poll.</p> <p>“After this year’s fantastic 20th-year celebrations, we asked our audience who they would like to see at next year’s festival and Arctic Monkeys came top of the poll, so we’re really pleased to be able to confirm them for T in the Park,” Ellis said in a statement released on the festival’s website.</p> <p>“When they take to the stage in Glasgow this week, they’ll prove exactly why they’re one of the greatest live acts around, and I’m sure we can look forward to another phenomenal set at T in the Park. We have many more fantastic acts in store which we’ll announce next year, and can’t wait to see you all again in July.”</p> <p>The band made their debut performance at T in the Park in 2006 following the release of the album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, and headlined the festival in 2011 alongside Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Beyoncé. <p><cite class="byline vcard">By <span class="fn">Emma Thomasson</span> | <span class="provider org">Reuters</span> – </cite></p> <div class="yom-mod yom-art-content" id="mediaarticlebody"> <div class="bd"> <p class="first">By Emma Thomasson</p> <p>BERLIN (Reuters) – The Germany head of IKEA Group, the world’s biggest furniture retailer, eventually expects 10 percent of sales to come from e-commerce, although the Swedish firm is still investing heavily in physical stores.</p> <p>“A long-term share of turnover of 10 percent is realistic,” Peter Betzel told the German retail congress on Wednesday.</p> <p>IKEA Germany saw online sales grow almost 27 percent to 92 million euros (76 million pounds) in the financial year that ended on August 31, but that was still just 2 percent of total sales of 3.99 billion.</p> <p>Betzel said he expected online sales of 150 million euros in the 2013/14 financial year, adding he hoped the full IKEA range would be available to buy on its website by the end of 2014 as logistics challenges are solved.</p> <p>IKEA has been slow to embrace e-commerce given its focus on a shopping experience that combines maze-like showrooms with cafes and play areas, driving incidental purchases of high-margin accessories.</p> <p>The IKEA Group, which owns most of the 345 IKEA stores worldwide, only sells online in half of its 26 markets, charges for most deliveries and does not offer the full range, but is now speeding up its expansion in e-commerce.</p> <p>Dedicated e-commerce players are also investing in the lucrative German home furnishings market, including mail order giant Otto and start-up Home24 whose founders, the German Samwer brothers, are reported to have pledged to “take down” IKEA.</p> <p>Research firm Euromonitor forecasts global e-commerce sales of home furnishings will grow almost 10 percent a year to $ 24 billion by 2015 from $ 20 billion in 2013. Growth is even faster in Germany, up 58 percent to 1.23 billion euros in 2012, according to the BVH e-commerce association.</p> <p>However, IKEA remains committed to expanding its physical footprint in Germany, with two new stores due to be opened in 2014 and three more already in planning elsewhere.</p> <p>“Because stores remain most important, we want to grow,” Betzel said. “We believe we have space for another 20 just in Germany.”</p> <p>IKEA Group hopes to double sales to around 50 billion euros by 2020 through around 5 percent annual sales growth in existing stores, and another 5 percent through new store openings. You've Got Mail.Ru: Russian Internet Giant Looks For U.S. Expansion With My.com

(Photo courtesy of My.com)<br /><p>As American internet firms go public, many have looked overseas to unearth untapped user bases. One Russian-based internet behemoth is doing the same, but instead of scoping out BRICs or other emerging nations, it's coming to the home of Twitter and Facebook.</p><br /><p>On Tuesday, Mail.Ru Group, Russia's second-largest web company by revenue, launched My.com, a suite of mobile messaging, e-mail and gaming applications that represents its first foray into an already crowded U.S. market. For some, the move would seem counterintuitive in a nation's whose mobile users do not lack for a 'next big thing.' But for Mail.Ru cofounder and CEO Dmitry Grishin, the company's decision is a signal of intent-an attempt to make one of the world's biggest internet firms even bigger.</p><br /><p>'It's a very exciting market to learn from,' says Grishin, wearing a standard-issue Silicon Valley hoodie with leather dress shoes in a recent interview in San Francicso. 'We also think that launching a product on the U.S. market will make us stronger on our local market because we're learning more and more and fighting here with the best of the best.'</p><br /><p>In entering the land of giants, Mail.Ru, an $8.2 billion (market cap) firm controlled my majority shareholder and billionaire Alisher Usmanov, is in uncharted territory. Best known abroad for its Yahoo -like offerings that combine internet services like email and search on a single portal, the Russian company, with only a handful of games to date, is not known for its app-building prowess. This venture, however, represents a more focused approach,which hopes to engage users by enticing them to use multiple apps at any given time. To that end, Mail.Ru purchased the domain name My.com, allowing for the easy branding of its products, naturally called myMail, myChat and myGames.</p><br /><p>'Guess any number and multiply it by five,' jokes Grishin when asked about the price.</p><br /><p>While the U.S. market isn't totally foreign to Mail.Ru-the company was a large stakeholder in Facebook and benefitted handsomely off the social network's 2012 IPO-it opened its first office in the U.S. earlier this year, starting small with a six-person operation based in Mountain View, Calif. There, in the shadow of Google , it'll hope to replicate the same multiple-offering success that has defined the search giant and its products like Gmail, Google+ and Google Play.</p><br /><p>MyGames represents the first aspect of that strategy, with freemium titles already launched in the U.S. including the FarmVille-esque Lucky Fields and Jungle Heat, already a top game on Android. While wary of the precedent set by social gaming failure Zynga, Grishin is betting on a similar thesis that all games, not just those on your phone, will eventually be free-to-play with users paying for in-game additions. It's Mail.Ru's way of dipping its toe in the market, introducing titles as a primer for grander announcements to come, says the CEO.</p><br /><p><img src="http://b-i.forbesimg.com/ryanmac/files/2013/11/my.com_.png" width="600"/>'Businesses in Russia and China are very focused on freemium models,' says Grishin. 'For example, if you look at the U.S., [big] gaming business here are based on a subscription model. You pay per month-$20 for World Of Warcraft... companies like Electronic Arts still stick with this old model.'</p><br /><p>MyMail is perhaps a safer play. Without introducing a new email client, the Mail.Ru's mail app is similar to the iOS offering that comes standard on all iPhones. 'We decided it was would be the right move to connect already existing mailboxes,' says Grishin, as opposed to providing new email addresses and competing for market share.</p><br /><p>Most intriguing is MyChat, whose swiss-army knife approach to communication combines the functionalities of popular voice and video apps like FaceTime and Viber with the text-message alternatives of WhatsApp and KakaoTalk. It's in communication that Mail.Ru's CEO sees the biggest potential, as one voice or messaging service hasn't grasped majority mindshare in the U.S market.</p><br /><p>MyChat seems to borrow inspiration from other previous apps, delivering their functionalities all in one place. There's the push-to-call video ability like Skype, along with the cute messaging interfaces (complete with stickers) that have propelled offerings like KakaoTalk and Line to the top of Asian markets. And with so many options across different mediums, Grishin believes there's value in offering everything in one place. The Logitech PowerShell Sure Beats Crappy iPhone Touch Controls

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Fingers in the way. Missed or misunderstood inputs. Imprecise control. The problems with trying to play games on an iPhone are well-documented. But the iOS 7 era has ushered in controllers. Glorious plastic housings that will make oily, greasy screens of frustrations a thing of the past. I touched one of them this week and my experience was promising.</p><br /><p>The first thing that struck me about Logitech's Powercell Controller is that it's looong. The Logitech rep who demoed the accessory for me nonchalantly pulled it out his pocket and replied that he wasn't wearing special pants when I remarked at the thing's size. But as tall as it is, it's pretty slim everywhere else, hugging an iPhone 5 tightly on the sides and the back. (You'll need an included cushion to accommodate the slimmer profile of the newer iPod Touch titles.)</p><br /><p>The whole thing is pretty light, despite its size. Better still, there's a firmness to it that's satisfying, especially when compared to the cheap feel of MOGA's newly-released Ace Power controller. The buttons and d-pad are analog, so they'll be sensitive to the amount of pressure applied. Most games don't have pressure sensitivity functionality built in yet but the controller will be there when they do.</p><br /><p>The Powercell uses a hardwired connection with a Lightning dongle on the right side of the housing. No wireless tomfoolery here. I sampled a few games using the Powercell, which improved the act of playing action and platformer-style games greatly. The few minutes I spent with Limbo, Lego Lord of the Rings and MetalStorm Aces was smooth. I could see the whole screen and didn't experience any flubbed moves. Some games already recognize the controller is attached and change their on-screen prompts accordingly, saying press A, for example, instead of tap.</p><br /><p>As the name implies, the Powercell also houses a back-up battery that charges via micro-USB adapter. Logitech claims the battery will double the life of the iDevice it's attached to. It's also got built-in speakers, too. All of this will cost $100 when the controller comes out in December. Samsung argues it only owes Apple $52 million for borrowing features.</p><br /><p>Samsung has lost big on Asian markets, as investors await the court decision on how much the handset maker should pay Apple. Shares were down 1.28 percent at 14:00 MST Wednesday.</p><br /><p>Apple and Samsung have been embattled in a bitter patent row. This week they return to court to determine damages involving 13 of 26 devices in which an earlier jury found Samsung infringed Apple patents.</p><br /><p>Apple was initially awarded $1.05 billion in August 2012 after a judge ruled it copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad.</p><br /><p>However, US District Judge Lucy Koh ruled that the jury didn't accurately assess the damage for the 13 products, and reduced the award by $410.5 million</p><br /><p>This particular case will decide how much of the $410.5 million Samsung will 'payback' to Apple.</p><br /><p>Samsung accused Apple's lawyer of making a prejudiced remark in Tuesday's closing statements, which prompted Samsung's lawyer to request the trial be invalidated, Bloomberg reports.</p><br />Copyright war<br /><p>Tension has been high in the back and forth litigation between the two companies, as they compete for brand dominance in the $300 billion smartphone market.</p><br /><p>In August US President Barack Obama decided to veto an import ban on Apple products, overturning a June ruling by the US International Trade Commission that approved Samsung's request to ban Apple products that infringed Samsung patents.</p><br /><p>The South Korea tech giant lost $1 billion in market value in a single day after the decision. Apple appealed, and failed to ban Samsung in the US in a 2012 Supreme Court case over patent infringement.</p><br /><p>Apple has gradually been losing customers to Samsung products, which run the Android operating system which is also used on LG, Motorola, HTC, and other devices. The platform offers a more 'open' system than Apple.</p><br /><p>September's release of the new iPhone models - the 5Si and the 5C (a pared-down plastic model) didn't win over investors and customers.</p><br /><p>Apple maintains the Samsung products are near copies of their flagship smartphones and tablets, and they are owned compensation for copying key features.</p><br /></div>

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Zandi Shabalala</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>TONGAAT, South Africa (Reuters) – Rescue workers called off the search for survivors at a collapsed South African building site on Wednesday, believing there are no more trapped construction workers beneath the half-built shopping mall.</p> <p>One person was killed and dozens injured in Tuesday’s collapse of the three-storey building in Tongaat, 30 km (20 miles) north of Durban.</p> <p>“The entire operation has been stopped and handed over to the Department of Labour,” police spokeswoman Mandy Govender told reporters at the site.</p> <p>Initial reports suggested as many as 50 workers might have been trapped under the rubble but rescue officials, working through the night with sniffer dogs, recovered only one body and discovered no survivors.</p> <p>The cause of the collapse remains unclear. Google's New Tools Show How Deep Glass Will Embed in Our Lives

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The promise of wearable computers is that the devices themselves will go away. They'll melt into the background to deliver data as needed, all without your having to fetch or look anything up. Google announced a few new features to its Glass software developers kit on Tuesday that help its face computer both be there and go away. With a few simple third-party apps, the company showed (probably better than ever before) just how Glass will evolve into something that's invisibly integrated into your day-to-day routine.</p><br /><p>Glass' new GDK - or Glassware development kit - makes it easier for application developers to tap into the hardware, even when its offline, to perform tasks in real-time without having to go back and forth to servers in the cloud. It opens new possibilities for developers to build tools that center around either immersive or ongoing tasks (as opposed to, say, simply notifications about things like new email, or the ability to upload a photo and share it online).</p><br /><p>Immersive tasks will let you dive into an application on Glass, much as you might on a smartphone, giving it your undivided attention - think gaming, for example. An ongoing task is one where you're swapping back and forth between the app and something you're doing - think cooking. One of the other promises Glass has, so far, truly failed to deliver on is the ability to do something else with your hands while still getting data updates from the device. There's been much speculation how Glass may one day be used in the operating room. But AllTheCooks shows how remarkably useful it can be in the kitchen. You can simply play the steps back without taking your attention away from what you're doing. You don't have to worry about greasy fingers on a tablet, or printed page. Meanwhile, filming step-by-step instructions without using your hands promises to be something that all manner of apps will be able to take advantage of.</p><br /><p>When people have asked me about Glass, I've often tried to explain it by saying, 'it's Google Now for your face,' (a phrase I stole from Metafilter founder Matt Haughey). That's because the Google Now functions - delivering information to you before you ask for it - have been its killer feature, even more than the ability to take photos or videos. The way it can drop an announcement on you based on where and when you are is amazing. But previously I haven't seen third party applications tap into that same functionality. Instead, you get things like breaking news alerts from the New York Times, or notifications about @ replies on Twitter. That's clearly changing now.</p><br /><p>There's been a huge over-emphasis on what Glass is (aesthetically ugly, of limited utility, socially awkward) rather than what it will be. Today, we got a glimpse of the path it's heading on - maybe our best yet. What's coming is a more technologically robust device that will enhance our situational and possibly even social awareness.
