On the heels of increasing strike activity this month, workers are gearing up for <a href="http://blackfridayprotests.org/" rel="nofollow">Black Friday protests</a> with a <a href="http://www.uniglobalunion.org/news/walmart-week-global-action-18-24-november" rel="nofollow">global week of action against Walmart</a>.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.uniglobalunion.org/" rel="nofollow">UNI Global Union</a> – an international federation of 900 unions in 140 countries – has put out the call for global protests demanding respect and good jobs throughout Walmart’s supply chain:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Workers around the world will come together November 18-24 for a global week of action… Workers and their unions in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh and the United States are joining together to demand better pay and working conditions for the 2.2 million Walmart workers and countless supply chain workers. </blockquote>UNI <a href="https://actionnetwork.org/groups/walmart-global-campaign/files/1085/download" rel="nofollow">passed a resolution</a> last month in support of the Walmart campaign, creating the UNI Alliance @ Walmart. Its demands include that Walmart allow workers to organize without fear of retaliation and pay workers a living wage with decent working conditions.<br /><br />The global union wants Walmart to sign a “<a href="http://www.unglobalcompact.org/issues/Labour/Global_Framework_Agreements.html" rel="nofollow">Global Framework Agreement</a>” with UNI that guarantees the rights of Walmart workers around the globe. It’s also calling on Walmart to sign the <a href="http://www.bangladeshaccord.org/" rel="nofollow">Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh</a> and to compensate the victims of factory disasters at <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/05/investors-to-wal-mart-gap-no-more.html">Tazreen, Rana Plaza</a> and Aswad – three factories (or “<a href="http://usas.org/2013/10/16/we-need-a-contract-to-end-deathtraps-in-bangladesh/" rel="nofollow">death traps</a>”) that produced apparel for Walmart stores.<br /><br />According to UNI: <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Walmart must pay its 2.2 million global workforce plus countless supply chain workers a fair wage and treat them with dignity. Workers and union members within the UNI Walmart Global Union Alliance will be taking their legitimate grievances to the street, demanding that the Walton family which controls Walmart finally wakes up and changes the company’s culture.</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">As part of the Global Action Week a petition and letter are being sent to the Walmart board cataloging a culture of unfair scheduling, low wages and retaliation against employees who have the temerity to speak out.</blockquote>The Walmart Week of Global Action is the latest in a wave of low-wage worker strikes crashing Walmart’s busiest shopping season. The past few weeks have seen strikes in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Dayton and Cincinnati.<br /><br />Yesterday <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/port-drivers-who-haul-for-walmart-strike-in-la-with-Teamster-support.html">port drivers who haul Walmart goods launched a 36-hour strike</a> in California to protest Unfair Labor Practices, including port companies’ payroll fraud by calling drivers “independent contractors.” The drivers have been joined by <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/LA-warehouse-workers-describe-horrifying-conditions-join-strike-line.html">workers at two warehouses that move Walmart products</a> where working condition are horrendous.<br /><br />Teamsters are standing strong with the port drivers and warehouse workers.<br /><br />The momentum for change at Walmart is building steam beyond the streets, too. Walmart is being <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/walmart-to-be-charged-by-nlrb-for-illegally-retaliation.html">charged by the NLRB</a> with illegally retaliating against 117 workers. Plus, Walmart is getting slammed in the media with reports about an employee <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/11/walmart-holding-food-drive-for-its-own-employees.html">food drive in Ohio to help “Associates in Need”</a> buy Thanksgiving dinner and a Demos report that says Walmart <a href="http://www.salon.com/2013/11/19/wal_mart_could_pay_every_us_employee_14_89_just_by_not_buying_its_own_stock/" rel="nofollow">could afford to pay all of its U.S. employees $14.89</a> an hour if it stopped buying its own stock.<br /><br />With Black Friday on the horizon, now is the time to get involved and support Walmart workers. Many are designed for the doctors themselves, ranging from handy databases about drugs and diseases to sophisticated monitors that read a person's blood pressure, glucose levels or asthma symptoms. Others are for the patients—at their doctor's recommendation—to gather diagnostic data, for example, or simply to help coordinate care, giving patients an easy way to keep track of their conditions and treatments.<br /><br><br /><br>Doctors say many of the apps are useful time savers, and have the potential to make health care more efficient by speeding diagnosis, improving patient monitoring and reducing unnecessary visits to a physician or hospital. The Biggest Mistake Doctors Make - WSJ.com

A patient with abdominal pain dies from a ruptured appendix after a doctor fails to do a complete physical exam. A biopsy comes back positive for prostate cancer, but no one follows up when the lab result gets misplaced. A child's fever and rash are diagnosed as a viral illness, but they turn out to be a much more serious case of bacterial meningitis.<br /><br><br /><br>Such devastating errors lead to permanent damage or death for as many as 160,000 patients each year, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Not only are diagnostic problems more common than other medical mistakes—and more likely to harm patients—but they're also the leading cause of malpractice claims, accounting for 35% of nearly $39 billion in payouts in the U.S. from 1986 to 2010, measured in 2011 dollars, according to Johns Hopkins.<br /><br><br /><br>The good news is that diagnostic errors are more likely to be preventable than other medical mistakes. And now health-care providers are turning to a number of innovative strategies to fix the complex web of errors, biases and oversights that stymie the quest for the right diagnosis.<br /><br><br /><br>Part of the solution is automation—using computers to sift through medical records to look for potential bad calls, or to prompt doctors to follow up on red-flag test results. Another component is devices and tests that help doctors identify diseases and conditions more accurately, and online services that give doctors suggestions when they aren't sure what they're dealing with.<br /><br><br /><br>"Diagnostic error is probably the biggest patient-safety issue we face in health care, and it is finally getting on the radar of the patient quality and safety movement," says Mark Graber, a longtime Veterans Administration physician and a fellow at the nonprofit research group RTI International.Finally, there's a push to change the very culture of medicine. Doctors are being trained not to latch onto one diagnosis and stick with it no matter what. Instead, they're being taught to keep an open mind when confronted with conflicting evidence and opinion.<br /><br><br /><br>The effort will get a big boost under the new health-care law, which requires multiple providers to coordinate care—and help prevent key information like test results from slipping through the cracks and make sure that patients follow through with referrals to specialists.<br /><br><br /><br>There are other large-scale efforts in the works. The Institute of Medicine, a federal advisory body, has agreed to undertake a $1 million study of the impact of diagnostic errors on health care in the U.S.<br /><br><br /><br>In addition, the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, which Dr. Graber founded two years ago, is working with health-care accreditation groups and safety organizations to develop methods to identify and measure diagnostic errors, which often aren't revealed unless there is a lawsuit. In addition, it's developing a medical-school curriculum to help trainees improve diagnostic skills and assess their competency.<br /><br><br /><br>Robert Wachter, associate chairman of the department of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, says defining and measuring diagnostic errors is an important step. "Right now, none of the incentives for improvement in health care are based on whether the doctor made the correct diagnosis," Dr. Wachter says. But equally important, he adds, "we need to nurture bottom-up innovation."<br /><br><br /><br>That's already happening. Large health-care systems are mining their electronic records for missed signals. At the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, part of managed-care giant Kaiser Permanente, a "Safety Net" program periodically surveys its database of 3.6 million members to catch lab results and other data that might fall through the cracks.<br /><br><br /><br>In one of the first uses of the system, a case manager reviewed 8,076 patients with abnormal PSA test results for prostate cancer, and more than 2,200 patients had follow-up biopsies. From 2006 to 2009, 745 cancers were diagnosed among those patients—and Kaiser had no malpractice claims related to missed PSA tests.<br /><br><br /><br>The program is also being used to find patients with undiagnosed kidney disease, which is often found via an abnormal test result for creatinine, which should be repeated within 90 days. From 2007 to 2012, the system found 7,218 lab orders placed for patients with an abnormal test that had not been repeated. Of those, 3,465 were repeated within 90 days of a notice to patients that they needed a repeat test, and 1,768 showed abnormal results. The majority, 1,624, turned out to be new cases of the disease.<br /><br><br /><br>Michael Kanter, regional medical director of quality and clinical analysis, says the system enables clinicians to go back "as far as is feasible to find all of the errors that we can and fix them."<br /><br><br /><br>Because the disease is slow moving, Dr. Kanter says, people with a five-year-old undiagnosed case may not have been harmed. Likewise, with many early prostate cancers, "in many of these cases it doesn't mean harm would have reached the patient," he says. "But we don't want patients not to have the information they should have had through some kind of lapse in the system."<br /><br><br /><br>Dealing With the Flood<br /><br>Electronic records aren't a panacea, of course, and can even lead to information overload. In a survey of Veterans Administration primary-care practitioners reported last March in JAMA Internal Medicine, more than two-thirds reported receiving more patient-care-related alerts than they could effectively manage—making it possible for them to miss abnormal test results.<br /><br><br /><br>Some researchers suggest the best solution isn't to flood doctors with information but to provide a second set of eyes to find things they may have missed.<br /><br><br /><br>The focus now is preventing dangerous delays in follow-ups of abnormal test results. In a pilot program, researchers at the Houston VA developed "trigger" queries—a set of rules—to electronically identify medical records of patients with potential delays in prostate and colorectal cancer evaluation and diagnosis. Records included charts that had no documented follow-up for abnormal findings suspicious for cancer after a certain period, according to the research team's leader, Hardeep Singh, chief of health policy and quality at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston and an assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.<br /><br><br /><br>The queries were run on nearly 600,000 records of patients seen at one VA facility in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Singh says the use of triggers, which helped find abnormal PSA tests and positive fecal occult blood tests, could detect an estimated 1,048 instances of delayed or missed follow-up of abnormal findings annually and 47 high-grade cancers.<br /><br><br /><br>The VA has funded a randomized trial to test whether an automated surveillance system of triggers can improve timely diagnosis and follow-up for five common cancers.<br /><br><br /><br>"This program is like finding needles in a haystack, and we use information technology to make the haystack smaller and smaller so it's easier to find the needles," Dr. Singh says.<br /><br><br /><br>More health-care systems are also turning to electronic decision-support programs that help doctors rank possible diagnoses by likelihood based on symptoms and notes in the medical record. In a study of one such system, called Isabel, researchers led by Dr. Graber found that it provided the correct diagnosis 96% of the time when key clinical features from 50 challenging cases reported in the New England Journal of Medicine were entered into the system. The American Board of Internal Medicine is studying how Isabel could be linked to assessments of physician skill and knowledge.<br /><br><br /><br>Another system, DXplain, developed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, was shown in a study last year to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy among first-year medical residents.<br /><br><br /><br>Edward Hoffer, associate clinical professor at Harvard and senior computer scientist at Mass General who leads the DXplain program, says the aim now is to have DXplain "push" diagnostic suggestions to physicians through an electronic-medical-records system rather than requiring doctors to initiate a query, which some are still reluctant to do. "We have to focus our attention on dealing with situations where doctors think they know what the diagnosis is, but they don't," Dr. Hoffer says.<br /><br><br /><br>Other Avenues<br /><br>New devices also hold promise for confirming a diagnosis and avoiding unnecessary tests. A number of companies are rushing to provide aids such as portable diagnostic equipment and lab tests that can analyze tiny samples of blood and other bodily fluids quickly to detect disease.<br /><br><br /><br>Consider MelaFind, which came to market in the U.S. in 2011. The device allows dermatologists to noninvasively examine moles as deep as 2.5 millimeters beneath the surface to gauge the level of "disorganization," an indicator of irregular growth patterns that are a sign of melanoma, among the deadliest cancers.<br /><br><br /><br>New York dermatologist Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas says she uses MelaFind to confirm that a mole is to be removed and prioritize the level of disorganization in multiple abnormal moles. In some cases, when another doctor or the patient has been concerned about a mole, MelaFind supported "clinical diagnosis of a benign mole, thereby sparing them a biopsy," she says.<br /><br><br /><br>But such devices will never replace a thorough physical exam with a trained eye and careful follow-up, says Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas: "These diagnostic tools are aids to increase our accuracy and adjuncts to good physical diagnosis, not a substitute."<br /><br><br /><br>Some efforts to cut down on errors take a different route altogether—and try to improve diagnoses by improving communication.<br /><br><br /><br>For instance, there's a push to get patients more engaged in the diagnostic process, by encouraging them to speak up about their symptoms and ask the doctor, "What else could this be?" At Kaiser Permanente, a pilot program provides patients with a pamphlet that encourages them to think about and write down their symptoms and what concerns or fears they have, encouraging them to ask specific questions to be sure they understand their diagnosis and the next steps they must take.<br /><br><br /><br>Medical schools, meanwhile, are teaching doctors to be more receptive to patient input and avoid "anchoring," the habit of focusing on one diagnosis and excluding other possible scenarios, and "premature closure," not even considering the correct diagnosis as a possibility.<br /><br><br /><br>The Critical Thinking program at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, established last year, aims to help trainees step back and examine how biases may affect their thinking. Developed by Pat Croskerry, a physician known for his research on the role of cognitive error in diagnosis, it uses a list of 50 different types of bias that may lead to diagnostic error.<br /><br><br /><br>The program is being integrated throughout four years of the medical school. Google's New Tools Show How Deep Glass Will Embed in Our Lives

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The promise of wearable computers is that the devices themselves will go away. They'll melt into the background to deliver data as needed, all without your having to fetch or look it up. Google announced a few new features to its Glass software developers kit on Tuesday that give its face computer a greater ability to both be there and go away. With a few simple third-party apps, the company showed (probably better than ever before) just how Glass will evolve into something that's invisibly integrated into your day-to-day routine.</p><br /><p>Glass' new GDK - or Glassware development kit - makes it easier for application developers to tap into the hardware, even when its offline, to perform tasks in real time without having to go back and forth to servers in the cloud. It opens new possibilities for developers to build tools that center around either immersive or ongoing tasks (as opposed to, say, simply notifications about things like new email, or the ability to upload a photo and share it online).</p><br /><p>Immersive tasks will let you dive into an application on Glass, much as you might on a smartphone, giving it your undivided attention - think gaming, for example. An ongoing task is one where you're swapping back and forth between the app and something you're doing - think cooking. Google showed a few new apps from Strava, AllTheCooks, GolfSight, Word Lens, and Spellista meant to demonstrate how developers can now use Glass to deliver immersive experiences, or enhance ongoing ones.</p><br /><p>Spellista and Word Lens were immersive apps. The former is a simple letter jumble game and honestly it was ho-hum. Word Lens, however, was pretty amazing. It fires up with a simple voice command, 'Okay, Glass, translate this.' Then you can look at a sign written in a foreign language, and the app will automatically translate the text and overlay it on the display. This happens nearly instantly. It was straight out of the future. But the ongoing tasks were probably even more interesting than the immersive ones.</p><br /><p>Take the new Strava app for Glass. Strava, a tool for tracking bike rides or runs, is immensely popular with cyclists and gaining ground with runners. But it's the type of app that clearly benefits from not having to pull a phone from a pocket or bag to get an update - you don't want to have to pluck it from a pocket while you're in the bike lane on Market Street. The Glass app lets it deliver real-time updates on speed and distance, and deliver ride segment reports simply by letting you look up. It promises to help you be more situationally aware, more in the moment, while still getting data delivered when you want it. Similarly, Golf Sight can let you know where you are on a golf course, how far you are from the green, and what hazards are between you and it without having to dive into a phone.</p><br /><p>Or take AllTheCooks, which lets you view or record recipes using Glass. One of the other promises Glass has, so far, truly failed to deliver on is the ability to do something else with your hands while still getting data updates from the device. There's been much speculation how Glass may one day be used in the operating room. But AllTheCooks shows how remarkably useful it can be in the kitchen. You can simply play the steps back without taking your attention away from what you're doing. You don't have to worry about greasy fingers on a tablet, or printed page. Meanwhile filming step-by-step instructions without using your hands, promises to be something that all manner of apps will be able to take advantage of.</p><br /><p>When people have asked me about Glass, I've often tried to explain it by saying, 'it's Google Now for your face,' (a phrase I stole from Metafilter founder Matt Haughey). That's because the Google Now functions -delivering information to you before you ask for it - have been its killer feature, even more than the ability to take photos or videos. The way it can drop an announcement on you based on where and when you are is amazing. But previously I haven't seen third party applications tap into that same functionality. Instead, you get things like breaking news alerts from the New York Times, or notifications about @ replies on Twitter. But that's clearly changing.</p><br /><p>There's been a huge over-emphasis on what Glass is (aesthetically ugly, of limited utility, socially awkward) rather than what it will be. Today we got a glimpse of the path it's heading on, maybe our best yet. What's coming is a more technologically robust device that will enhance our situational and possibly even social awareness. (WTVR) – Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds is being treated for “serious injuries” after he was stabbed “multiple times” inside his Bath County home, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.<br /><br />“After the stabbing, Senator Deeds left the scene on foot and walked down the hill of his residence to Route 42,” according to Virginia State Police. “The injured senator was spotted and picked up by a cousin who was driving along Route 42. The two drove to the cousin’s residence where the 911 call was placed to the sheriff’s office.”<br /><br />Deeds was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center where his condition was not released. The senator’s son, 24-year-old Gus Deeds, died in the home from a gunshot wound, Geller said during a Tuesday afternoon press conference.<br /><br /><br /><br />Virginia State Police were called to Sen. Deeds’ Millboro-area home about 7:25 a.m. Tuesday.<br /><br />“Troopers arrived to find Sen. Deeds stabbed multiple times about the head and upper torso,” Geller said. “Senator Deeds’ son, Austin “Gus” Deeds, was found inside the residence, suffering from life-threatening injuries associated with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts by trooper and first responders, he died at the scene.”<br /><br />The investigation into the motive and sequence of events regarding Tuesday’s violence remained under investigation, Geller said. She added it was not yet known if Gus Deeds died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, however, she said police were not currently looking for a suspect in the shooting.<br /><br />Sen. Mike Peifer believes northeastern Pennsylvania has become "infested" with coyotes that are preying on everything from house cats to deer.<br /><br />Peifer, R-139, is calling on Pennsylvania hunters to help cull the population. He's introduced legislation that would allow the state Game Commission to offer $25 for each coyote killed.<br /><br />The House is set to vote on the bill today.<br /><br />The bill wouldn't require the Game Commission to implement the incentive, but it would give it the flexibility to do so in areas where coyotes are a problem, Peifer said. State law already allows for coyote hunting year-round.<br /><br />"We're just trying to control this population a little bit," he said. "Let's give (hunters) an incentive to hunt coyotes."<br /><br />Peifer says the coyote problem first hit home on a bear hunting trip last year, when his party shot four coyotes. Nokia Shareholders Vote to Sell Cellphone Unit to Microsoft

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/11/20/technology/20nokia-span/20nokia-span-articleLarge.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>HELSINKI - Nokia's shareholders took a major step on Tuesday to reshape the company, voting overwhelming in favor of selling the company's handset business to Microsoft for $7.2 billion.</p><br /><p>The approval represents one of the final steps before Microsoft takes control of the struggling cellphone division, which is expected early next year. But it also leaves many questions about what is in store for Nokia, a Finnish company that still lies at the heart of Europe's technology industry.</p><br /><p>'It's been a very challenging period,' Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia's chairman and interim chief executive, said in a recent interview. 'When I became chairman, I didn't think this was going to be a possibility. There have been a lot of emotions.'</p><br /><p>The handset unit - which sold 64.6 million phones in the third quarter of 2013 - is still one of the world's largest. But it has increasingly lost out to rivals like Samsung and Apple that now dominate the lucrative smartphone market.</p><br /><p>After pioneering mobile phone technology throughout the 1990s, Nokia became the world's largest handset maker with a market value of around $250 billion. It had nearly a 40 percent share of the global smartphone market as late as 2009, according to Gartner, the research company.</p><br /><p>But Nokia's market share has quickly dwindled to less than 4 percent of global smartphone sales, and Samsung is the world's largest phone maker. The company's market value stands at roughly $30 billion, or just 12 percent of its record high.</p><br /><p>'It's a sad moment, but we have to look forward,' said Michael Halbherr, who leads Here, Nokia's mapping business, which will remain part of the company. 'The type of culture we had at Nokia created success, but it didn't do enough to succeed in the smartphone era.'</p><br /><p>Despite the company's recent lackluster performance in the cellphone market, Nokia still has a few tricks up its sleeve as it contemplates the future. Senior executives at the company are completing a strategy, due early next year, that is expected to focus on Nokia's remaining businesses and be supported, at least in part, by the cash from the handset sale.</p><br /><p>The plans are likely to include a networking unit that competes with companies like Ericsson of Sweden and Huawei of China to build high-speed mobile data infrastructure for large carriers, including Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. While the business began as a joint venture with Siemens, Nokia bought the 50 percent that it did not already own for $2.2 billion earlier this year.</p><br /><p>The company has also held on to its mapping division, whose technology is in about 80 percent of the automotive navigation systems worldwide. It also controls an intellectual property portfolio that could either be licensed to other companies or used to build new products.</p><br /><p>'We are in a unique situation,' Henry Tirri, Nokia's chief technology officer, who manages the company's intellectual property, said in an interview. 'Before, we only thought about fitting our technology into mobile devices because that was our main business. Now, we have kept our technological assets and can use them where we see opportunities.'</p><br /><p>Analysts warn, however, that creating a viable business from the three separate divisions, which are run independently, could prove a challenge.</p><br /><p>Nokia's networking division, for example, will generate over 90 percent of the company's revenue after the handset sale is completed. With little overlap with the company's mapping unit, some investors have called on the firm to sell, or spin off, the smaller unit so that Nokia can prioritize its core networking operations.</p><br /><p>'These are very different business,' said Sylvain Fabre, a Gartner telecoms analyst in London. 'It's hard to see how they could create connections between them.'</p><br /><p>Other shareholders have demanded that Nokia return some of the almost 8 billion euros, or $10.8 billion, in cash that Nokia will have after it completes the sale of its handset division.</p><br /><p>Analysts say that a portion of the proceeds will probably be spent on acquisitions, particularly for Nokia's mobile networking business, but that some of Microsoft's money also will make its way to wary investors, who remain unsure of Nokia's future plans.</p><br /><p>'We expect a meaningful portion of the excess will be distributed to shareholders in coming quarters,' the American hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb wrote in a letter to his investors last month.</p><br /><p>While investors bicker over how the money should be spent, Nokia's executives and employees - and many Finns - are still coming to terms with the new-look company that has been synonymous with handsets for more than two decades.</p><br /><p>Many in the Northern European country viewed Nokia's position as a leader in the cellphone industry as a matter of national pride, and the company helped to train software engineers and developers who transformed Helsinki into one of Europe's leading technology hubs.</p><br /><p>The sale is also the first time in the lives of younger generations in both Finland and around the world that Nokia will not be known for making handsets. Analysts and investors have raised concerns about how Nokia will be able to connect with global consumers who still associate the brand with mobile phones. Microsoft has a 10-year licensing deal to use the Nokia brand for some of its own phones.</p><br /><p>Rajeev Suri, head of the company's network business, says his priority is now squarely on increasing Nokia's market share in so-called fourth-generation mobile infrastructure, which supplies high-speed cellular connections. The business has been growing as consumers increasingly rely on smartphones and tablets to connect to the Internet.</p><br /><p>Mr. Halbherr of Nokia's mapping unit also wants to extend the company's foothold in GPS navigation by building relationships with some of the world's largest automakers, which already use the firm's products and services.</p><br /><p>Still, for others, the handset sale remains a hard pill to swallow.</p><br /><p>Janne Lindström joined Nokia's networking unit in the mid-1990s, and has worked in a number of manufacturing jobs alongside his counterparts in the cellphone business at one of the company's plants in northern Finland.</p><br /><p>Despite Nokia's recent problems, Mr. Lindström said he had been hopeful that the company's networking business, which itself underwent a restructuring that involved 17,000 job cuts worldwide, would help to support the faltering handset business so that it could remain part of Nokia.</p><br /><p>'The announcement with Microsoft took me by surprise,' he said.
