Matt: "I just sort of stumbled through it, and was grateful and thankful when it was over. I don't know if I'm allowed to say that? Also, I'd been for two auditions, had like three or four months hanging around, and then they were like, 'Can you come in, in like two weeks, please?'" David: "Here's a page of dialogue" Matt: "Yeah, and suddenly you're doing it and then... I mean, I'm going to have to go through it as well soon, but I can't imagine what it's like to see some young whippersnapper turn up in your suit". David: "It is quite peculiar. But that day was very different to my first day (The Parting Of The Ways, 2005). I had the advantage of sort of being slipped in under the cover of darkness, with a skeleton crew, no other actors, Chris Eccleston's half of the scene had already been filmed. I was just being dropped in a few weeks before it was transmitted. Whereas when you did it, Matt, most of the BBC seemed to have come down from London and was standing round the monitors. It was very high pressure." David: "My experience of the day was...it was very mixed, because it was quite emotional just filming that last moment. It wasn't my last day. Had it been my last day as well..." Matt: "Horrendous" David: "I think I'd have found it really tough" David: "Then I just wandered off and got in a car. That was the really weird bit. As you wander off you hear them going 'Right, okay, let's block the next scene', and suddenly you are aware of how dispensable you are - but also that you've filmed something quite historic, and that's exciting to be part of, as is this.." The conversation also touched upon David's hairstyle in The Day Of The Doctor, a subject that seems to be popular with some members of the fanbase. So are we to read anything in to the fact that his hair isn't quite as bouncy / spiky or generally va va voom as it was in some previous episodes.. David: "Nothing. No. Well we're mixing it up. Otherwise it's business as usual. This isn't the sort of part where you can change your look all that often. You have a different tie now and again." Matt: "That's a different tie?" David: "It's a slightly different tie, although very much from the same palette (laughs). The shirt's quite different." Matt: "Is it?" David: "No." How do they feel about their performances as the Doctor being compared to past actors portrayals? David: "The Doctor isn't the same each time, so you're expected to kind of do it a bit different to the guy who did it last. It's not quite like Hamlet, or Tarzan, or James Bond, where the characters are sort of..." Matt: "I find Tarzan a remarkable character. Sorry, to interrupt. Carry on." David: (Laughs) "But those characters are the characters, whereas the Doctor is a bit of a blank sheet each time. So I suppose you're compared by people who like to make lists of their favourites and things like that, but that's not really being compared against someone else as an actor, that's people having preferences, isn't it? Which is a slightly different thing." Matt: "I just really want to see a whimsical Tarzan now.." He was on the set of 'Anger Management' when a grip named Casey Jones plastered a few posters on the wall seeking donations for The Walk To End Epilepsy. The poster included a pic of Casey's grandson, Dylan, who was diagnosed with pediatric epilepsy when he was 3. Learn about two of the city’s most distinctive art forms – azulejo tiles and fado music – at the Tile Museum (museudoazulejo.pt) and Museum of Fado (museudofado.pt), which often has live music in its café. Where to stay Since it opened in September, the rooftop winebar of the Memmo Alfama, with its striking red swimming pool, has become the place in which to hang out in Lisbon. But just when you thought the pop-ups had packed up, a new breed of winter spin-offs has arrived on the scene, complete with reindeer skins, hot punches and open fires. Summer saw a disused factory in Hackney taken over by the team at Forza Win, which creates seasonal “dining experiences” in offbeat spaces. Now they’re back on the rooftop with an Italian winter feast featuring minestrone soup and wood-roasted porchetta (until 21 December, forzawin.com). It's the winnable road games that give Stanford trouble, whether at Washington, Utah or USC - the Cardinal's last three Pac-12 losses, all three on the road, all three to unranked teams. It's a steep slide from the top of the Rose Bowl chase to outside the Bowl Championship Series picture; that's where Stanford stands today, after a second loss again gave Oregon control of the Pac-12 North Division. When it comes to the new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, set to be released midday Sunday, the second loss should send Stanford tumbling outside the top 10. RANKINGS: Coaches Poll entering Week 12 And with the top four teams staying the course, the main intrigue in this week's poll comes from the competition to replace Stanford as the top-ranked team with a single loss. There are five teams with a very strong case for slotting in at No. 5, right behind the four unbeatens: Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Baylor. One is Oregon, which lost at Stanford, 26-21, on Nov. 7. A second is Clemson, which has found easy sledding after a 51-14 loss to Florida State on Oct. 19. Also in the hunt are Missouri, which was idle Saturday, and Oklahoma State, which moved to 9-1 by beating Texas on the road. But it's hard to ignore what Auburn has achieved in coach Gus Malzahn's first season. After going 3-9 last season, losing all eight games in the SEC, the Tigers are 10-1 heading into the annual Iron Bowl against Alabama on Nov. 30. Saturday's memorable 43-38 win against Georgia leaves Auburn at 6-1 in the SEC, one win away from securing the West Division title. One thing is sure: Both Alabama and Auburn will have one or fewer loss and be ranked inside the top 10 - two firsts in the rivalry since 1994. While in no danger of losing its No. 1 ranking, Alabama could lose another handful of first-place votes to Florida State. The Crimson Tide were far from perfect Saturday in a 20-7 win against Mississippi State. FSU did what it has done all season, ripping apart an overmatched conference foe in Syracuse by 56 points. But it's clear that Alabama would have to lose a game to drop out of the top spot. Stanford's slide could only be to No. 10, just behind those one-loss teams. But the Cardinal could very well slip lower, due to the two losses to unranked teams, and be slotted behind fellow two-loss teams like Texas A&M and South Carolina. USC, meanwhile, should move back into the Coaches Poll for the first time under interim coach Ed Orgeron. Teams moving up in the poll: USC will be one new face in the new poll. There are should be at least one other; Miami (Fla.) and Texas lost, so this week's poll should have two or more new teams. One team with a very strong case for joining USC is Duke, which handed Miami a 48-30 loss to take control of the ACC Coastal Division. 1. Mississippi. The Rebels continue to get shockingly little respect in the poll despite netting wins against Vanderbilt, Texas and LSU. 2. Louisiana-Lafayette. The wins are rarely pretty, but the Ragin' Cajuns continue to charge toward a 10-win regular season. 3. Michigan State. Meal for two: £70 (cash only) A few years ago I gave a positive review to a Chinese restaurant on London’s Shaftesbury Avenue called Golden Day, where the food made my scalp sweat. It specialised in the dishes of Hunan; nothing could be served unless it had first been pelted with fistfuls of fresh and dried chillies, even dessert. I loved their “dry pot” chicken, the liquor in the wok bubbling to nothing over its burner, and the slices of pork belly with pickled soya beans. The management laminated my review and stuck it in the window. I walk past often and, being thus reminded of what a great time I’d had there, would pop in by myself, hunker down behind one of the wooden partitions and bury myself armpit deep in plates of fire and punch with a bit of pig thrown in for good measure. It made me happy. A few months back I ate there again and it was awful. It was now a culinary black hole, a place where appetite went to die. It felt like a different place entirely. Dreary bits of meat floundered about like corpulent German tourists testing the buoyancy of the Dead Sea, in sauces which had a similar level of subtlety as those waters. I told the manager how bad I thought it now was and walked him over to the window where the laminated copy of my review was Blu-Tacked in place. I insisted he took it down, which he did. It was a staggeringly self-regarding thing to do: bullying, bombastic and ludicrous. In my defence, I was really quite drunk, which is no defence at all. Then again I was also very cross. I’ve since realised my sense that this was now a different restaurant was closer to the mark than I might have imagined. Not long after, I heard that the Golden Day chef had moved on to Yipin China on the Essex Road. I ate there and lo and behold all the power and attitude I loved was in place. This is something with which those of us who adore these niche Chinese restaurants, with their fighty repertoire far removed from the sugary staples of the Cantonese tradition, must contend. The kitchens of restaurants serving the food of Sichuan, Hunan and Xiandong provinces depend, for the most part, on an immigrant workforce. And that workforce tends to be more mobile than most. The restaurant is great until they sod off somewhere else. Then it isn’t. I am constantly receiving emails from people telling me the place I praised is awful, that I am an idiot and have personally ruined their evening out. (The exception to this is the group around the Soho Sichuan restaurant Barshu, which maintains its standards.) I hope today’s restaurant stays as good as it was the night I ate there, but past experience means I advise you to visit sooner rather than later. Sichuan Folk was recommended to me by the brilliant Fuchsia Dunlop, author of the key English language cookery books on Sichuan food, who also trained at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine in Chengdu, one of the very first Europeans so to do. She is a consultant for the Barshu group, and regularly rolls her eyes at me when I big up the qualities of a rival, as if I’m a promising undergraduate who has overreached himself. So if she recommends somewhere it’s generally worth paying attention. And it is. Sichuan Folk is a small box of a restaurant on Brick Lane, down the road from the many truly awful curry houses which cluster here. There is a little wooden fretwork on the walls and some brushwork – Chinese characters, a few delicate bamboo shoots – for decoration. Tables are packed closely together, so that you end up pointing at dishes landing in front of strangers and barking: “Ooh, what’s that?” As is standard in Sichuan places, the menu is picture led. It is a riot of overexposed saturated colours – or at least I assumed it was until the food arrived and it was just as vivid off the page. We started with a bowl of sesame seed-sprinkled caramelised walnuts, as black as pebbles on a churned shingle beach and almost as shiny. These are the crystal meth of sugared-nut snacks, the thin outer layer giving way to deep toasted tones punched up by the sesame seeds. Photograph: Sophia Evans for the Observer Their meaty, thin-skinned “signature” dumplings are half the size of standard Chinese-restaurant offerings and come in a deep soy-based sauce which is less a salty hit than something intense with umami and more caramel. Our waiter insists on spooning the sauce over the dumpling’s folds repeatedly before he will let us near them. We appreciate his ministrations. Sichuan twice-cooked pork is slices of belly with fat the colour of marble that melts on the tongue, with a good handful of seared spring onions to make you feel it might almost be good for you, plus the welcome intrusion of pickled red chillies. It’s served with steamed rice buns to be opened up and back-filled: you get soft sweet bun, the crunch of spring onion, the hit of fiery sauce and then the pork itself. Photograph: Sophia Evans for the Observer The final combo is Chinese fish and chips. The chips are slices of flash-fried potato with a shedload of dried red chillies, garlic and salt. What’s not to like? The fish is a “fish-fragrant” sea bass that arrives at the table whole, battered and curling up on itself, slathered with a sauce and a fine julienne of spring onions. The waiter displays then dismantles it. We fear bones, but by some miracle of expert deep-frying, the whole thing can be crunched through from head to tail. The flesh is white and pearly and soft. The sauce is sweet and sticky, with an edge of fire. That’s a repeated theme. Some Sichuan restaurants throw chillies and numbing peppercorns at you as if you’re an addict craving a fix (and sometimes I am). Perhaps we only hit the gentle end of the menu, but here it felt like they were being used as a flavouring rather than some sweat-inducing declaration of intent. Right now Sichuan Folk is an absolute gem, a true collector’s piece. I just hope it stays that way. ■ The Red Chilli group has been a reliable source of kicking Sichuan food across the north for many years now. The most reliable remains the outpost on Portland Street, in Manchester. Portions are huge, and prices reasonable. Ignore any dish you’ve ever heard of and go instead for the likes of spicy hot-poached mutton in chilli oil. Some of it may hurt, but you’ll like it… ■ While we’re in that part of the world, Disappearing Dining Clubs, which stages pop-up dinners in unusual locations, has just extended operations from London to Mancs. The Kauai County Council’s 5-2 vote means agricultural companies will be unable to plant crops inside buffer zones created around schools, homes and hospitals. New limits will be placed on pesticide use and companies must disclose where they will plant test crops. The vote to override Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.’s veto caps months of protests by islanders and mainland U.S. groups opposed to extensive testing of crops on Kauai, a largely rural island that has a tropical climate considered ideal for trying out new biotech crops. The council needed five votes to cancel the veto. The spread of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and feed has triggered a global dispute with critics claiming GMOs require more use of pesticides and cause environmental damage and health issues for people and animals. Companies opposed to the measure have said biotech crops are essential in boosting global food production and in improving environmental sustainability. They said pesticides already are well regulated by state and federal agencies. Among the firms that have tested biotech crops on Hawaii’s “Garden Isle,” as Kauai is known, are DuPont, Syngenta AG, and Dow AgroSciences, a division of Dow Chemical Co. Passage of the measure in Kauai was hailed by California-based Pesticide Action Network North America. “The victory not only creates critical new laws but also serves as a signal to other communities across the United States that they can prevail over powerful corporations,” Paul Towers, the group’s organizing and media director, said in a statement. Concerns about pesticide use on the island have been mounting in recent years and some people contend health problems, including cases of cancer, are tied to the farm chemicals on the experimental crop fields. Carvalho said the bill is vulnerable to legal challenge and he proposed ordering a study on health and environmental impacts of pesticides on the island. “Of course we will honor the council’s decision and I will continue to work with my departments to determine how we will implement this new law,” the mayor said after the vote. He said the law would take effect in nine months. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Apple has reportedly acquired PrimeSense, the motion-tracking company responsible for the technology in the original Xbox 360 Kinect, in a deal said to be worth around $345m. Whispers of the possible purchase, today reported by Israeli news site Calcalist, began back in July though were described as being in the early stages, and PrimeSense unofficially dismissed the speculation along with chatter rumors of a $280m price tag. <img src="http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/primesense_kinect-580x386.jpg" width="600"/> According to the latest reports, however, that denial was less than accurate, and the negotiations between Apple and PrimeSense have been ongoing nonetheless. A pubic announcement is said to have been planned in roughly two weeks time, though if Apple is true to past form, the company may simply decline to comment on any deal. We've got a request in for more information, and will update if and when we hear more. PrimeSense's appeal is in its advanced body-movement tracking technology. Although Microsoft switched from the original PrimeSense system used in the original Kinect sensor for Xbox 360, to a homegrown alternative in the more recent version, that hasn't stopped the company from further developing its system and targeting smaller implementations. One such implementation is Capri, shown below, which significantly reduces the size of the sensor array while still allowing accurate motion-tracking of separate limbs and more. <img src="http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/PrimeSense_Capri-580x188.jpg" width="600"/> Initially, Capri was seen as being the main point of appeal for PrimeSense to Apple, with suggestions that the new sensor could find its way into future iterations of iPhone and iPad. However, according to the Israeli report today, Apple's actual intended goal for PrimeSense's systems is its much-rumored television project. That would suggest navigation of an on-demand, streaming smart TV system using gestures rather than a complex remote. Talk of a full TV with the Apple logo has persisted for some years now, fueled in part by comments by Steve Jobs in which he reportedly claimed to have 'cracked' the problem of unintuitive interfaces. At the time, it was assumed that Apple's voice control system on iOS, Siri, would be the key to that system, but if the PrimeSense leaks are authentic, it now looks like motion-control could also play a part. That would certainly fit in with PrimeSense's own development roadmap; the company said it was exploring TV integration all the way back in January 2011. Another suggestion, though not one necessarily based on any more than speculation, is that the sensor system could be used in Apple's smartwatch project, unofficially-dubbed the iWatch. WBA champion Ward's title was not on the line after his Dominican opponent failed to make the weight. The 29-year-old shrugged off a shoulder injury which has sidelined him for 14 months to win unanimously, taking the contest 118-106, 117-107, 116-108. IBF champion Froch lost to Ward in 2011 and is open to fighting in Las Vegas. A shoulder muscle tear and surgery had kept Ward out of the ring for over a year, but he showed no ill effects in California as he dominated from the beginning and survived a fourth round bout of wrestling in which both fighters were deducted two points. Undefeated Ward, who inflicted one of Froch's two professional defeats, took the first round despite Rodriguez running at him from the opening bell, trying to get inside and make things uncomfortable. There was no sign of Ward being ring rusty despite his lay-off and his work-rate had his opponent well behind after the first three rounds. After the spate of brawling caused referee Jack Reiss to intervene, 2004 Olympic light-heavyweight champion Ward responded to the warning with a big right hand to make it four rounds in a row. He continued to land jabs and a massive left in the 10th round sealed a comfortable victory. The Californian had not fought since a 10th-round stoppage of fellow American Chad Dawson in September 2012. Nottingham fighter Froch, who holds the IBF super-middleweight belt, will defend both of his titles against London's George Groves in Manchester on 23 November. </div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://sports.cbsimg.net/images/cbss/ui5/authors/80x80/14190.png" width="600"/> LOS ANGELES -- For the first time in some 17 years, USC fans stormed the field after a Trojan win Saturday night, celebrating as if they'd just won a national title after their team's stunning upset of No. 4 Stanford, 20-17, on a last-minute field goal. On this night, the Trojans didn't snap a 13-game winless streak against arch-rival Notre Dame. The victory over the Cardinal, though, had a surreal quality to it. After all, it has only been six weeks since head coach Lane Kiffin was fired and a proud program was left in disarray. USC AD Pat Haden tabbed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head coach to handle the remaining eight games. No one outside of the USC locker room expected much. The team was 0-2 in Pac-12 play and Orgeron's previous history as a head coach -- three rough seasons in the SEC at Ole Miss, where he won three conference games combined -- left many, especially down south, snickering.But a truly crazy thing is happening in Los Angeles. That team that was left for dead in late September, is now 5-0 in Pac-12 play since Orgeron took over and just notched its first win over a ranked team since 2011. On the field, as fans and families swarmed the field from a sellout crowd of 93,607, Trojan offensive assistants Clay Helton, Mike Summers and Tommy Robinson, three coaches with a combined 76 years of professional experience, celebrated in a group hug, jumping up and down.'This is unbelievable,' said the 50-year-old Robinson, as tears welled up in his eyes. 'I am so proud of these guys and this team.'Robinson, the USC running backs coach, has grown close to Orgeron, and took the moment to campaign for the former defensive line coach to become the Trojans' permanent head coach.'Ain't no doubt in my mind that Ed Orgeron should be named USC's head coach, and I don't care who hears me,' said Robinson. 'No man on this planet can make these kids play harder than he can. We got 50 kids on scholarship playing like they are and like they did tonight against that team? This guy is phenomenal.'The undermanned Trojans, who only subbed two defensive reserves into the game the entire night against the punishing Stanford attack (and one of those two subs, CB Torin Harris, only played one snap), held the Cardinal to a season-low 17 points, a week after David Shaw's team mauled No. 2 Oregon. Stanford, which came into the game converting third downs at 52 percent, managed just four-of-12 Saturday night.'It was a tremendous effort by the organization and the coaching staff,' Orgeron said. 'For some reason on Monday there was a belief that we were going to find a way to win this game.'I'm awfully proud of our young men. This is something that we've wanted for the past Trojans and coaches. This is for the Trojan family.'It's a family that has been through a lot since Pete Carroll moved on to the NFL. There's been hefty NCAA sanctions that had gutted the program. There was the tumultous Kiffin tenure and the cloud of uncertainty hanging over a program still coping with severe scholarship reductions. That Orgeron, a 52-year-old gravelly voiced Louisiana native who predated Carroll in Los Angeles and has embraced the USC heritage probably as much as any Trojan grad, is the one leading this improbable story only seems to galvanize the program and its fans that much more and make it all seem that much more curious.In his three tumultous seasons in Oxford, his record was 10-25. (I had a front row seat for much of his time there while I worked on my recruiting book, 'Meat Market.') Orgeron's Ole Miss teams played hard and were almost always competitive, but they couldn't seem to turn the proverbial corner. One particularly heartbreaking day came in October, 2007 when it seemed the Rebels were about to cap off a frenetic comeback to upset Nick Saban's Alabama team in Oxford, but instead there was a controversial call made by the officials, essentially ending the game. Ole Miss lost 27-24. A few hours after the game I recall Orgeron's wife telling me how some Ole Miss fans just kind of shrugged their shoulders, as if trying to console her by saying, 'Maybe this all just wasn't meant to be.'Five weeks later, Orgeron was fired. The move came a day after his decision to go on fourth down, two touchdowns up against Mississippi State, blew up in his face and the Bulldogs rallied for a 17-14 win. I suspected that deep down Orgeron believed if his team routed their arch-rival in Starkville, his bosses couldn't fire him.Orgeron, like the Ole Miss coach he replaced and the one who replaced him, clashed with his AD, and that lack of trust helped create a toxic enviroment around the program. He had recruited some good young players, but never stayed around long enough to see them develop. Those players would later become the nucleus of back-to-back Cotton Bowl teams that his successor, Houston Nutt, got to coach. Since then, Orgeron has bounced from a year in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints to another season at Tennessee and then back home to USC. And now, somehow, he's living out a fantasy of sorts. Getting a do-over at the program that means more to him than any other.How he's grown as a head coach is almost mind-boggling to me. He has proven to be radically different than he was in his time in Mississippi -- and just as importantly, radically different than his predecessor, Kiffin. Orgeron has done seemingly everything differently than he did in his first time as a head coach. The joke in college football circles is that ever since being flipped the keys the gruff Cajun has adopted the George Costanza's bizarro 'opposite' philosophy. On Monday, Orgeron admitted he's never seen Seinfeld but laughed and nodded when told about mirroring Constanza's 180.Orgeron explained to me last month, a few days before his first game as USC's head man, that he's learned not to chase ghosts and instead keep the big picture in mind. Gone are the days when he worked everyone into the ground and instead he would remain relentlessly upbeat and enthusiastic. He would trust his assistants and his players, and they'd lean on each other. He'd treat them like he treats his own sons. He would be the guy recruits fall in love with -- the one whose presence dominates a room. Not the one who seemed so on edge. A few days after Orgeron took over, he hired 72-year-old Pete Jenkins, his old college coach and mentor, to join the staff. A lifelong D-line coach from the NFL and the rigors of the SEC, Jenkins knows Orgeron better than anyone. A half-hour after the game had ended, Jenkins, too, had tears in his eyes while he spoke about USC's win and about his protege.'I think he learned so much from his time at Ole Miss,' Jenkins said. 'The thing is, he learned a lot about what to do, and what not to do. Those players we have, they love that guy. And that is a really powerful thing. That's a really good line we faced, and we played them without subbing out one guy on the line all night. They're giving us everything they have and they really are so focused. 'At this point in time, [Orgeron] is the best guy for this job. Everything is about timing. I'm not saying he'd be perfect for everywhere else. Some places are different, but I believe this: he's perfect for USC. He truly loves this place and these people.'The Trojans still have two games remaining. Next week they play at Colorado before finishing up the regular season against cross-town rival UCLA. Whether Orgeron gets to coach the Trojans after this season is anybody's guess. But one thing is certain: the guy who was the longest of long shots when he was first announced on a sunny Sunday in September, is a legit candidate now. According to sources, Orgeron has a lot of influential boosters in his corner and an increasing number of fans. But he knows his team still has a lot of work left. 'All I can do is work with [the team] every day,' Orgeron said. 'I think everything happens for a reason and that there's a greater plan. What that plan is I don't know, but we'll work together on a daily basis.
