FXX Lands 'The Simpsons' in Record Off

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/thumbnail_570x321/2012/10/simpsons_a.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>Following a multiple network bidding war, FXX has become the exclusive cable home for The Simpsons.</p><br /><p>The upstart network has secured cable, VOD and non-linear rights to the longest-running comedy series in history, the network announced Friday. As part of the pact -- said to be the biggest off-network deal ever -- FXX will become the cable destination for all seasons of 20th Century Fox TV's The Simpsons starting in August 2014. The deal covers 24 seasons -- a whopping 530 episodes -- as well as subsequent seasons not in first-run on Fox of the series from Gracie Films Productions and executive producers <strong>James L. Brooks</strong>, <strong>Matt Groening</strong> and <strong>Al Jean</strong>.</p><br /><p>The deal will mark the first time the series will air on cable. When Simpsons first sold into broadcast syndication in the early 1990s, TV stations demanded exclusivity from cable for the run of the series in part because they were hesitant about an animated show's ability to perform in a landscape heavy on live-action repeats. It's not entirely clear what has changed in those broadcast deals to allow the FXX pact to happen.</p><br /><strong>COVER STORY: 'The Simpsons' at 500: Untold Stories</strong><br /><p>FXNOW, FX Networks' forthcoming mobile application for authenticated subscribers, will be the exclusive non-linear home for all seasons of the animated comedy about Springfield's most dysfunctional family. FXX and FXNOW will get subsequent seasons of the series as new ones begin their first run on Fox. The cabler will have access to the current 25th run of the series starting in September 2014 -- when the already announced 26th season makes its debut on Fox.</p><br /><p>'We believe we'll get both reach and frequency from The Simpsons,' FX COO <strong>Chuck Saftler</strong> tells The Hollywood Reporter of the potential gains Simpsons repeats will bring his newly launched network. In fact, for FXX, which bowed in September, the deal comes as the comedy-heavy network with a focus on adults 18-34 continues to add programming. The Simpsons will join a roster of original programming that includes the fourth and final season of Wilfred as well as comedies It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League. (The network canceled little-watched late-night talk show Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell earlier this week.) He added: 'Frequency tends to come from acquired series, where if you're a fan of that show, you'll come back multiple times. It's a way to create sampling for original programming to other programming we'll have on FXX. We bought considerable rights and we basically created some new paradigms out of this.'</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: Meet the Cast of 'The Simpsons'</strong><br /><p>The deal comes four months after news leaked that studio 20th Century Fox TV would be shopping the off-network syndication rights to The Simpsons. At the time, News Corp.-owned FX and FXX -- as well as Turner-owned TBS, Viacom's Comedy Central, TV Land, Nick at Nite and Spike were all expected to be among the suitors. The series was expected to fetch as much as $1.5 million per half-hour, generating an additional $1 billion or so to the show's already lucrative business -- which includes toys, video games, apparel and more. (At one point in 2011, News Corp.'s <strong>Chase Carey</strong> said the company was mulling an entire channel devoted to nothing but The Simpsons as it looked to create additional revenue streams for the show.)</p><br /><p>Financial terms of the FXX and FXNOW deal were not immediately available, though the network is billing the The Simpsons pact as the 'biggest off-network deal in TV history.' A per-episode rate on the deal may be more challenging to estimate considering the pact includes future seasons of the series on top of its non-linear rights.</p><br /><p>'There will never be another deal of this size because I don't think there will be another property that will achieve this many episodes,' warns Saftler, who negotiated the deal for FXX and FX Networks along with <strong>Chris Antola,</strong> senior vp strategic programming at FX Networks. 'When I started at FX 20 years ago, The Simpsons was on my hit list as a show that was targeted that would be perfect for FX. (Via @bobpockrass)</p><br /><p>The final Chase for the Sprint Cup championship press conference of 2013 played out like an off-brand kids' movie: pleasant, utterly predictable, with nary an unexpected turn anywhere. But that's what happens when your final weekend is edging away from 'race' and toward 'coronation.'</p><br /><p>Three years ago, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick utterly mind-screwed Denny Hamlin. Two years ago, Tony Stewart played psychological ninja on Carl Edwards. Last year, Johnson tried to rattle Brad Keselowski. This year? Johnson holds a 28-point edge over Matt Kenseth, and as the challenger noted, only a miraculous misfire could keep Johnson from his sixth championship:</p><br /><p>'Obviously we're not going to make up the deficit on performance. I think Jimmie could run 28th through the grass or with three wheels on,' Kenseth laughed. 'He's going to have to have a mechanical problem or crash to make something happen. We'll have to be up in the top five to hold on to second or to overtake Jimmie if he has a problem.'</p><br /><p>'Realistically the only things we can control are what we do,' said Harvick, who's 34 points back. 'It's definitely a really, really long shot. But we'll control the things that are in our control and see how it all falls.'</p><br /><p>Kenseth and Harvick didn't even try to mess with Johnson's head. Why bother? It's not like either of them could get in there, and it's not like they could do much damage if they did. Johnson said all the right things, keeping distractions and locker-room quotes to a minimum. And he says hasn't even begun to think about that championship.</p><br /><p>'I'm just focused on getting in the car and doing all that I can on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, minimizing the stakes, all those types of things,' he said. 'I've really tried hard not to go down that road and think about those things. I think it would be a mistake.'</p><br /><p>There were a few surprises, none related to the competition itself. One came in the news that the reigning Sprint Cup champion would get a Hall of Fame vote, a nice nod to linking the present with the past.</p><br /><p>The drivers were all asked about the Chase itself, and while Johnson was pleased, Kenseth naturally wished for a little more latitude in the points department. Harvick gave an interesting answer, echoing many fans:</p><br /><p>'Things I don't like about it are the same racetracks year after year,' he said. 'I think it would help our schedule, it would help some of the racetracks, help build some excitement around some different racetracks. I think there needs to be a road course in it. I think there definitely needs to be some things mixed up in it. None of them match Apple's iPads in app selection, design and cachet.</p><br /><p>Apple started selling the new iPad Mini on Tuesday, 11 days after the full-size iPad Air came out. The starting price of last year's Mini has been cut to $299. In both cases, versions with cellular access are available for $130 more.</p><br /><p>In many ways, the old iPad Mini was a 2011 full-size iPad 2 in a smaller casing. The old Mini's display technology and its processor were already more than a year old when the device launched. It's even older now.</p><br /><p>Apple doesn't skimp with the new model, which is officially called the iPad Mini with Retina display.</p><br /><p>Retina is Apple's term for a higher-resolution screen - in this case, one that sports four times the pixels in the same space as the older version. According to Apple, there are enough pixels such that the eyes shouldn't be able to discern the individual dots that form text and images. You get much sharper images - even sharper than on the iPad Air, which has a resolution of 264 pixels per inch compared with 326 in the new Mini.</p><br /><p>And while last year's iPad Mini used the same A5 processing chip as the 2011 iPad 2, this year's model shares the speedy, A7 chip found in the iPad Air as well as the new iPhone 5S. Apple says graphics are up to eight times faster than last year's model and other tasks are up to four times as speedy. By contrast, the Air has only twice the speed as the previous full-size model.</p><br /><p>Like the Air, the new Mini also has a second microphone for better audio recording and two Wi-Fi antennas for up to twice the speed.</p><br /><p>In my tests, I found small text on websites much easier to read on the new Mini. White letters over a black background look faded on last year's Mini. They look clear and sharp on the new one. The differences are harder to glean with images and video. A blurry photo isn't going to look sharper just because there are more pixels. But at least it won't be surrounded by fuzzy captions.</p><br /><p>As for speed, you won't notice much difference for everyday tasks. Apps do launch a tad faster on the new Mini, and Web pages load slightly faster. Where you'll notice the speed gains are in games and other data-intensive apps - many of which have yet to be written to fully take advantage of the A7 chip's power. As for the dual Wi-Fi antennas, I didn't find video downloads faster on the speedy Wi-Fi network at work, but I did see significant improvement when I tested the full-size devices on my irritable network at home.</p><br /><p>Unfortunately, like the Air, the new Mini also lacks some features made possible by the A7 chip. That includes a fingerprint sensor for bypassing four-digit security codes and a camera that can take up to 10 photos per second. For now, that's found only in the iPhone 5S.</p><br /><p>That's not a deal-breaker for me, though.</p><br /><p>What might be is the price.</p><br /><p>It's difficult to spend nearly twice more than Google Inc.'s Nexus 7 or Amazon.com Inc.'s 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX. Both are excellent tablets with a screen resolution that's about the same as the new iPad Mini. (Those two devices have fewer pixels, but also smaller screens, so their densities are comparable.)</p><br /><p>The 7-inch screens, measured diagonally, aren't as large as the iPad Mini's 7.9 inches. You get about 35 percent more screen space on the Mini.</p><br /><p>But the Nexus and Kindle devices are both lighter than the new iPad Mini, which got 7 percent heavier than last year's model because it has a larger battery to power the better display, while keeping battery life at 10 hours for Wi-Fi Web surfing. The new iPad mini is 11.7 ounces, compared with 10.9 ounces for last year's model, 10.7 ounces for the Kindle and 10.2 ounces for the Nexus.</p><br /><p>The new Mini is also a tad thicker than last year's model, but slimmer than Google's and Amazon's tablets.</p><br /><p>If you're watching your budget, consider those rivals or even the older Mini without the sharper display.</p><br /><p>But if you're looking for a top-notch experience, you can't go wrong with the new Mini, even with the higher price tag.</p><br /><p>Several leading apps come to Apple devices first, and they are more likely than Android apps to be adapted for tablet screens. With many Android apps, you simply get a blown-up version of the phone app. You'll appreciate using those apps on the new Mini's improved display.</p><br /></div>

CME Group Says Its Computers Were Hacked, No Trades Affected (1)

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Bloomberg News</p><br /><img src="http://www.bloomberg.com/image/ird1z9pYJUG4.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>, operator of the world's largest futures market, said its computer systems were hacked in July and 'certain customer information' for its ClearPort platform was compromised.</p><br /><p>The owner of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange said there's no evidence that transactions on its electronic-trading system or its clearing services were affected. The incident is the subject of a U.S. government investigation, according to CME Group and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.</p><br /><p>Cyber security has been flagged as one of the biggest threats to markets and governments by industry groups and international regulators. A study in July found that computers at about 53 percent of exchanges around the world were attacked during the previous year. Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. discovered suspicious files on its website in 2011, prompting a federal investigation.</p><br /><p>'Assuming no customer assets were affected, this is useful as an eye-opener,' said Pete Lindstrom, an analyst at Spire Security in Philadelphia. 'We continue to see various types of folks who are hacked,' he said. 'It starts to generate concern over our financial infrastructure.'</p><br /><p>CME ClearPort provides clearing services for over-the-counter products including energy and metals trades. 'To protect participants, CME Group forced a change to customer credentials impacted by the incident, and is corresponding directly with the impacted customers,' the company said in today's statement.</p><br />FBI Investigates<br /><p>Michael Shore, a CME Group spokesman, declined to elaborate on the statement.</p><br /><p>'We did receive the referral' from CME Group, said Joan Hyde, a spokeswoman for the Chicago office of the FBI. 'We are looking into the matter.'</p><br /><p>While cyber attacks are global, American exchanges have reported the most instances of attempted sabotage via the Internet, according to a July study co-authored by the World Federation of Exchanges and the International Organization of Securities Commissions. About 67 percent of U.S.-based trading venues said they had to fight them off, the study showed. About 89 percent said it represents a systemic risk.</p><br /><p>That's in line with the conclusion of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., which processes U.S. stock trades. It said in August that hacking is the gravest threat to government and financial markets.</p><br /><p>'Cyber-security is a large and growing problem for all financial service providers,' Howard Ward, the chief investment officer for growth equity at Rye, New York-based Gamco Investors Inc., which oversees about $40 billion, wrote in an e-mail. 'We must accelerate our investments in protecting our financial system and power grid from intruders before they score a big one.'</p><br /><p>On July 25, U.S. prosecutors said they indicted four Russians and a Ukrainian in what was called the largest hacking and data breach scheme in U.S. history. Nasdaq OMX was among their targets.</p><br /><p>Nasdaq OMX in 2011 disclosed an intrusion involving 'suspicious' files on its Directors Desk system, which lets corporate board members communicate and share information. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Ghaith Shennib and Ulf Laessing</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Six people were killed and dozens more wounded in clashes between militiamen and armed residents in the capital Tripoli on Friday, state television said, in a further challenge to Libya’s weak government.</p> <p>The third outbreak of street fighting within 10 days underscored Libya’s struggle to contain regional militias that helped overthrow Muammar Gaddafi two years ago but kept their guns. Armed disorder has blocked most oil exports for months.</p> <p>Friday’s bloodshed began when militiamen opened fire into hundreds of protesters demanding their eviction from the capital after they had repeatedly battled with other armed factions for control of parts of the capital.</p> <p>A Reuters reporter saw an anti-aircraft cannon firing from the militia compound into the crowd on Friday as it chanted, “We don’t want armed militias!”</p> <p>Protesters at first fled but then returned heavily armed to storm the gated buildings, where militiamen – from the central coastal town of Misrata – were holed up past nightfall.</p> <p>Dozens of soldiers in army trucks arrived to try to separate the crowds and militiamen in the compound, and they sealed off roads to prevent more armed people joining the unrest. Heavy smoke could be seen rising from the scene.</p> <p>Air force planes circled overhead to monitor Tripoli’s main roads. “We want to make sure the militia don’t bring in any reinforcements,” said a military spokesman.</p> <p>State television quoted hospital sources for its casualty figures. A Reuters reporter saw three bodies in Tripoli’s central hospital, where staff called via loudspeakers for blood donations to treat the wounded.</p> <p>ARMED DISORDER BLOCKS OIL EXPORTS</p> <p>Rival militia gangs and former fighters have refused to disarm since the downfall of Gaddafi, eroding the authority of the central government and severely disrupting oil exports from the OPEC member state.</p> <p>Tripoli has been spared the almost daily bombings and killings that plague Libya’s second city, Benghazi, in the east of the vast North African state.</p> <p>But clashes between rival militias sometimes break out in the capital, where Libya’s nascent armed forces are still in training and are no match for the heavily armed militiamen.</p> <p>Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan has called for more foreign training for his military. Highlighting Libya’s chaos, the premier himself was briefly abducted in October by a militia group on the government payroll.</p> <p>Friday’s violence began as a peaceful rally of some 500 people demanded the departure of Misrata gunmen who had fought twice last week with a rival group that had briefly detained one of their members for driving a car without number plates.</p> <p>Libyan authorities have tried to coopt the militias by placing them on the government payroll and recruiting them to provide security in Tripoli and other cities.</p> <p>But the gunmen often remain loyal to their own commanders rather than to state authorities and fight for control of local areas, smuggling of weapons or drugs, or to settle personal feuds.</p> <p>Strikes and armed protests by militia and tribal gunmen demanding payments or more autonomy rights have also shut much of the OPEC member’s oil output, depriving the government of its main source of income.</p> <p>(Additional reporting by Feras Bosalum; Writing by Patrick Markey and Ulf Laessing; Editing by Mark Heinrich)</p> <ul id="topics" class="hidden"> <li>Politics & Government</li> <li>Unrest, Conflicts & War</li> <li>Muammar Gaddafi</li> <li>Libya</li> </ul><p></p> //<!--[CDATA[ jQuery(".gmframe").load(function (){jQuery(this).remove();}); //]]--> <br><br>
