<p><cite class="byline vcard">By <span class="fn">Rik Henderson</span> | <span class="provider org">Pocket-lint</span> – </cite></p> <div class="yom-mod yom-art-content" id="mediaarticlebody"> <div class="bd"> <p>As soon as the European Aviation Safety Agency announced that there is no opposition to allowing flight passengers to use smartphones, eBook readers, tablets and the like during take-off and landing in European countries, another decision was made that will affect technology on flights, this time by the European Commission.</p> <p>It has said that airlines will be allowed to deploy 3G and 4G networks on their flights in Europe, including the UK. That doesn’t mean that you will be able to use your smartphone to check for emails when up in the clouds, but that the company itself could offer in-flight data services by connecting to available bandwidth.</p> <p>“Spectrum for 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE) communications may be used above an altitude of 3,000 metres,” said the Commission in a statement. “Until now only 2G (GSM) has been permissible on-board aircraft flying in the EU, which is impracticable sending large amounts of data (for example sending large attachments, downloading eBooks, watching video).”</p> <p>It is now down to the airlines to choose whether they want to exploit this new ruling and offer services to their customers. “If airlines take advantage of the new possibilities, passengers will have access to better internet services, at times when their aircraft is flying above 3,000m altitude,” the statement continued. “So if you want to surf social networks during your flight, or send emails with attachments, this decision makes that possible.”</p> <p>Don’t bank on any changes happening too soon as it could take a while for airlines to implement new technologies on their aircraft. The cost might also filter down as connection fees. MapQuest Still Exists. It Has An iOS 7 App To Prove It

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The days of printing out directions from MapQuest are long gone in today's mobile world, but to the surprise of many, that hasn't been the fate for the mapping company. While Google and Apple duke it out on mobile, AOL-owned MapQuest has been sitting in third place, quietly building an iOS 7 app from scratch to show it's still in the game.</p><br /><p>Across mobile and desktop, MapQuest sees more than 30 million unique views monthly, and the company touts that one in five American adults use its service once a month. In fact, in the brief period when Google Maps was missing from the iOS ecosystem, users frustrated with Apple Maps overwhelmingly chose MapQuest, which shot up as the No. 1 most downloaded navigation app the day the iPhone 5 went on sale.</p><br /><p>Diving into its demographics, MapQuest realizes it has a niche audience. 'The person we're really focused on is the soccer mom who's in her car with three kids in the backseat,' head of product Nate Abbott told Fast Company. But he said the app 'needed a lot of love,' and it was rebuilt from the ground up to be fast and responsive.</p><br /><p><img src="http://c.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/fastcompany/imagecache/inline-small/inline/2013/11/3021587-inline-3021587-slide-menu.png" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>One of the main focuses was simplifying the information presented with navigation. By default, traffic data is turned on and users are automatically given traffic-optimized routes. When giving directions, the app shows the move that follows the next, so drivers can prepare and move into certain lanes. A feature not found in other mapping apps, MapQuest has a progress bar, color coded for traffic. 'What I find is I'm going 60 on the freeway, and I'm pinching and zooming out. Obviously that is stupid on my part and dangerous, but still I'm a curiosity seeker,' Abbott said. With the progress bar, he says 'I get an immediate sense of how far I've gone, how far I have to go, and what's upcoming.'</p><br /><p>Other differentiators? One-way streets are depicted as arrows, so it's obvious which direction they run. Staying true to old-fashioned paper maps, interstates are colored blue. 'Our team said we love our blue interstates. We really should keep them as blue,' Abbott explained. 'It's what users are used to. It's what they see in a road atlas.'</p><br /><p><img src="http://d.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/fastcompany/imagecache/inline-small/inline/2013/11/3021587-inline-3021587-slide-traffic-alert-accident.png" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>But how accurate is the mapping data? 'We haven't gotten it perfectly right. Frankly, no one will get it perfectly right, but we can do a lot better than what we've done,' Brian McMahon, MapQuest's general manager, admitted. He said MapQuest uses about 70 mapping data sources, and the company is in the middle of finalizing a few deals to improve its accuracy.</p><br /><p>The iOS 7 app is still missing a lot compared with the competition. Transit directions are one of the most glaring voids, but McMahon says now that the app has shipped, MapQuest will continue iterating to bring new features. Mike Perlis just sent a memo to staff that says the company is looking at offers.</p><br /><p>Bloomberg reporters Alex Sherman, Jeffrey McCracken and Edmund Lee broke the news this morning that the company was working with Deutsche Bank to find a buyer. Sources tell Bloomberg Forbes Media is looking for $400 million.</p><br /><p>That suggests a lower valuation than the company saw seven years ago, when Elevation Partners paid $240 million for a 45-percent stake in the company, according to the report.</p><br /><p>The memo to staff does not specify an asking price, and characterizes the sale effort as a 'test [of] the waters' for a buyer.</p><br /><p>The company has been run by a Forbes family member since its founding in 1917, most recently by two-time presidential candidate Steve Forbes.</p><br /><p>Forbes Media has been singled out for praise by media watchers for its early and agressive embrace of native advertising, a now controversial revenue stream. Nokia Lumia 2520 RT tablet available in US for $400 on 22 November

Nokia just announced that this Windows 8.1 RT device will launch in the US next week.</p><br /><p>The Nokia Lumia 2520 will launch on AT&T in black on 22 November for $399.99 with a two-year agreement. AT&T is also offering a deal where you can buy a Lumia 925, 1020, or new 1520 and knock $200 off the price of the 2520, making it just $199.99 with one of these phones.</p><br /><p>One aspect of this tablet that distinguishes it from the Microsoft Surface 2 is the integration of cellular wireless. I have LTE on my 3rd generation iPad and find it much more convenient and functional than having to tether to a phone and kill two batteries.</p><br /><p>Data only plans for AT&T tablets range from $14.99 (250MB) to $50 (5GB). People didn't seem to be fans of tablet contracts in the past so we will have to see if this pricing plan works for AT&T and Nokia.</p><br /><p>I personally prefer the option to buy a month of data when I need it, but then the initial price of the device would go up as well. I'm not sure if you can buy this without a contact and what that cost is, but will try to find out.</p><br /><p>It is interesting that Nokia is bringing some of their advanced camera technology to a tablet with the 6.7 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. I've seen plenty of people using their iPad to take photos and video and wonder if this new Lumia will also now be appearing in the way while I am trying to watch sports.</p><br /><p>The Lumia 2520 looks like a sweet piece of hardware and I hope to try it out soon. I personally find the Microsoft Surface hardware to also be fantastic so it is great to see another vendor releasing a high quality, premium Windows device.</p><br /><strong>Related ZDNet reading</strong></div>

Hardware sales were down 8 percent to $171.7 million as consumers eyed this month's launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Software sales boosted the industry, rising 12 percent year-over-year to $482.5 million.</p><br /><p>For the sixth consecutive month, the Nintendo 3DS was the top-selling hardware in October with over 452,000 units sold across the US. Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the top-selling console on the month, according to NPD. Microsoft reported on Thursday that Xbox 360 sales topped 166,000 units during the period.</p><br /><p>Sony, which launched the PlayStation 4 on Friday, didn't reveal PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita sales figures.</p><br /><p>On the software side, Grand Theft Auto V was the top-selling game in the US in October, followed by Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. EA's Battlefield 4 came in fourth place.</p><br /></div>

Well, in my last blog I asserted that a dedicated yoga practice had seated me in gratitude, which leads to contentment. I’d already planned my next assignment, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, to explore the concept of thankfulness. And the fates were about to hold my grateful, contented feet to the fire.</p> <p>On Friday November 1, 2013, I was in Terminal 3 of the Los Angeles International Airport when a 23-year-old man, armed with an semi-automatic assault rifle, allegedly walked in through the doors closest to where I was standing and opened fire, reportedly killing the TSA agent who was not more than 30 feet away from me. Seven hours of unthinkable moments later, I was released from the airport and made my way on foot, out through the closed-off streets and then by taxi through the congested but open roads to Venice, where my distraught husband had been waiting all day.</p> <p>The reunion was sweet and surreal. We were both stunned by what had been our reality since last seeing each other earlier that morning. Immediately upon arriving home, we went into the yoga studio and spent the next three hours holding hands while lying next to one another in various supported yoga poses, opening our gripped diaphragms, allowing our breath and <em>prana</em> (life-force energy) to begin to flow freely again inside our bodies. As the shock began to wear off, what we felt in those first precious hours can only be described as pure thankfulness.</p> <p>Thankfulness is defined as “the ability to express gratitude or appreciation.” I knew that the abiding contentment my yoga practice had graced me with stemmed from gratitude, but this experience left me with a desire to know where my ability to be grateful came from. So I went on an inner exploration, which embarked at gratitude and followed it to its source, arriving at what I call “the fullness of presence.”</p> <p>In his book <em>Light on Life</em>, B.K.S. Passenger 'falls' from small plane

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71140000/jpg/_71140221_piperstockphoto640x360.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>Florida authorities are searching for the body of a man who reportedly fell from a plane into the Atlantic Ocean.</p><br /><p>The pilot of a private single-engine aeroplane flying near Miami reported to an air traffic controller that a male passenger opened the back door of the plane and 'just fell'.</p><br /><p>The incident occurred at 1,800ft (548m) nearly two miles from shore.</p><br /><p>Search teams do not believe the man could have survived a fall from that height.</p><br /><p>The unidentified 47-year-old pilot of the Piper PA-46 radioed for assistance at 13:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Thursday.</p><br /><img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71140000/jpg/_71140001_piperstockphoto640x360.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>'Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! I have a door ajar... and a passenger that fell down,' the pilot can be heard saying in a recording from the air traffic control broadcast released by website Liveatc.net.</p><br /><p>'You said you've got a passenger that fell out of your plane?' the air traffic controller asked.</p><br /><p>'That's correct, sir,' the pilot confirmed. 'He opened the backdoor and he just fell down the plane.'</p><br /><p>The pilot made an emergency landing at a local airport in Tamiami, Florida.</p><br /><p>The Federal Aviation Administration asked for assistance from the US Coast Guard and local rescue teams, who initiated a search using helicopters and boats.</p><br /><p>Florida's Miami-Dade police department launched a homicide investigation due to the 'extremely unusual' nature of the incident.</p><br /><p>'It's safe to say someone falling out of an airplane without a parachute is going to be deceased,' department spokesman Lt John Jenkins said.</p><br /><p>Authorities have not released the names of the pilot nor the passenger, nor the nature of their relationship.</p><br /></div>

JON STEWART TO OBAMA: At Least You're Not Rob Ford!

'I think when you campaigned, you were all, 'Yes we can!' I don't remember the other slogan' of 'Pobody's Nerfect.'</p><br /><p>And so it's come to this.</p><br /><p>'Certainly, the rollout of the president's signature health care law has been rocky. Stocks on cusp of key milestones

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Stocks continue to hit new records, and with just another little leg up, the three major indexes could surpass some big milestones.<br /><p>The Dow Jones industrial average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were all about 0.1% higher in early trading Friday.</p><br /><p>The Dow is closing in on 16,000, while the S&P 500 is inching toward 1,800, both of which would be reached for the first time. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is nearing 4,000, a level not seen since September 2000, just after the collapse of the dot-com bubble.</p><br /><p>Some believe stocks can continue moving higher in the short run as investors who have sat out the rally so far rush to get in before the party's over. Plus, stocks are still trading at compelling valuations, compared with many other assets. Bulls also say that the market surge is justified to improving economic conditions and record corporate profits.</p><br /><p>But others warn that stocks are being inflated by the Federal Reserve's easy monetary policies.</p><br /><p>The bears say stocks are due for a correction, which could come once the Fed begins to cut back, or taper, its $85-billion-per-month bond-buying program -- which could happen as soon as next month but is more likely to take place sometime next year.</p><br /><p>For the moment though, worries about Fed policy have been put on the back burner.</p><br /><p>Janet Yellen, who has been nominated to replace Ben Bernanke as Fed chair, told a Senate panel Thursday that she is determined to support the U.S. economic recovery, and believes the Fed's bond-buying program still has the power to help.</p><br /><p>'She is clearly emphasizing the need for policy to remain highly accomodative for some time,' said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.</p><br /><p>Related: Fear & Greed Index</p><br /><p><strong>What</strong><strong>'</strong><strong>s moving:</strong> Shares in Exxon Mobil were higher after it was revealed that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway made a big bet on the company, buying roughly 40 million Exxon shares -- worth $3.74 billion at Thursday's closing price.</p><br /><p>Government-sponsored mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac both surged after activist shareholder Bill Ackman disclosed in a regulatory filing that his firm, Pershing Square, bought just under a 10% stake in each firm.</p><br /><p>Credit rating agency Moody's downgraded four of the biggest U.S. banks, saying that it was now less likely the federal government would bail them out in the case of a crisis.</p><br /><p>Shares of the four - JPMorgan Chase , Goldman Sachs , Morgan Stanley and Bank of New York Mellon -- were little changed. Moody's reaffirmed its ratings on four other major banks -- Bank of America , Citigroup , State Street and Wells Fargo .</p><br /><p>European markets were mixed in midday trading. China to ease decades-old one-child policy nationwide [ BeritaTerkini ]

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Sui-Lee Wee and Li Hui</p> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> <p>BEIJING (Reuters) – China will ease family planning restrictions nationwide, the government said on Friday, allowing millions of families to have two children in the country’s most significant liberalization of its strict one-child policy in about three decades.</p> <p>Couples in which one parent is an only child will now be able to have a second child, one of the highlights of a sweeping raft of reforms announced three days after the ruling Communist Party ended a meeting that mapped out policy for the next decade.</p> <p>The plan to ease the policy was envisioned by the government about five years ago as officials worried that the strict controls were undermining economic growth and contributing to a rapidly ageing population the country had no hope of supporting financially.</p> <p>A growing number of scholars had long urged the government to reform the policy, introduced in the late 1970s to prevent population growth spiraling out of control, but now regarded by many experts as outdated and harmful to the economy.</p> <p>While the easing of the controls will not have a substantial demographic impact in the world’s most populous nation, it could pave the way for the abolition of the policy.</p> <p>“The demographic significance is minimal but the political significance is substantial,” said Wang Feng, a sociology professor at Fudan University specializing in China’s demographics, before the announcement.</p> <p>“This is one of the most urgent policy changes that we’ve been awaiting for years. What this will mean is a very speedy abolishment of the one-child policy.”</p> <p>In the 1980s, the government allowed rural families with a girl to have two children, Wang said. “Ever since the ’80s, there’s been nothing as clear as this,” he said.</p> <p>Wang Guangzhou, a demographer from top government think-tank, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, estimated the new policy would affect 30 million women of child-bearing age In a country which has nearly 1.4 billion people.</p> <p>Although it is known internationally as the one-child policy, China’s rules governing family planning are more complicated. Under current rules, urban couples are permitted a second child if both parents do not have siblings and rural couples are allowed to have two children if their first-born is a girl.</p> <p>There are numerous other exceptions as well, including looser rules for ethnic minorities and allowing parents who are themselves only children to have two children at most.</p> <p>Any couple violating the policy has to pay a large fine.</p> <p>The one-child policy covers 63 per cent of the country’s population and Beijing says it has averted 400 million births since 1980.</p> <p>Many analysts say the one-child policy has shrunk China’s labor pool, hurting economic growth. For the first time in decades the working age population fell in 2012, and China could be the first country in the world to get old before it gets rich.</p> <p>“It’s not a huge reform, there have been small adjustments all along,” said Liang Zhongtang, a demographer from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.</p> <p>“I am just worried that they will make no further adjustments for a very long time after they’ve made this one.”</p> <p>Tian Xueyuan, a retired family planning scholar who helped draft the original one-child policy, told Reuters the rules were only meant to last about 25 years.</p> <p>“They could have implemented this policy several years ago,” he said.</p> <p>Numerous studies have shown the detrimental effects of the one-child policy. China’s labor force, at about 930 million, will start declining in 2025 at a rate of about 10 million a year, projections show. Meanwhile, its elderly population will hit 360 million by 2030, from about 200 million today.</p> <p>A skewed gender ratio is another consequence.</p> <p>Like most Asian nations, China has a traditional bias for sons. Many families abort female fetuses or abandon baby girls to ensure their only child is a son.
