<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>The new Apple iPad mini With Retina display ($399 to $829) is just a shrunken iPad Air. It's so similar to Apple's flagship tablet that your decision will pretty much be completely based on size and price. Like the Air, this is one of the slimmest and best-built tablets you'll find anywhere. It's an absolute pleasure to use. But unlike the large-screen Air, the iPad mini has many viable small-tablet competitors that are much less expensive, making it less of a must-buy and more of a luxury purchase. <img src="http://www.pcmag.com/img/compare_button.png" width="600"/> The mini is so similar to the Air, check out our iPad Air review for full details. Physical Design and Wireless The new mini is superficially identical to the old one. If you look really closely, you'll find that it's ever so slightly thicker (.01 inch) and ever so slightly heavier (by less than an ounce) to accommodate a larger battery for the new high-res screen. At 7.87 by 5.3 by .29 inches (HWD) and 11.68 ounces, it'll still fit in old iPad mini cases. The difference between the mini and the Air is really now about size and price, not weight. I just held both tablets in my hands, and now that the Air is only four ounces more, the weight difference between the two tablets doesn't feel meaningful. The mini still has the 4:3 aspect ratio which makes it compatible with iPad apps, but noticeably thicker-and less usable one-handed-than the competing Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7'. Its metal-and-glass construction is still tightly elegant, with a shiny chamfered edge around the corner. The narrow side bezel echoes the iPad Air's, and like the Air, it comes in silver and space gray. The 7.9-inch, 2,048-by-1,536-pixel IPS LCD touch screen is bright and sharp. It's the exact same resolution as the iPad Air, but in a higher pixel density-324ppi to the Air's 253, almost the same density as the iPhone 5S. All of the screen elements are slightly smaller than they are on the Air, something you notice in productivity apps with lots of tiny screen elements like iPhoto. They're still usable, but you need slightly sharper eyes and fingers than you do on the big iPad. The mini comes in a dual-band, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi version and a universal cellular version that works with all U.S. carriers. Every mini is unlocked, even if it comes with a SIM card installed, Apple told me. Wi-Fi performance was good, but not quite as good as the iPad Air. Testing against a Meraki MR16 router through a metal door, I saw 13-14Mbps down on the mini but 18-19Mbps down on the Air. Bluetooth 4.0 is also on board; the cellular version, but not the Wi-Fi-only version, has GPS. Battery life was 6 hours, 8 minutes playing video with the screen set to max brightness. That's better than the Kindle Fire, but not as good as the Nexus, and it's just about the same as the iPad Air. Performance and Multimedia The iPad mini has a 1.3GHz Apple A7 processor, the same speed as the iPhone 5s and slightly slower than the Air's 1.4GHz. It scored slightly slower on the Geekbench and Sunspider benchmarks than the Air did, but matched the Air's result on the Browsermark browser test and on the GFXBench graphics test. Both tablets are faster than the Nexus 7. Although Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX outpaces the iPads on graphics and processor tests, the iPads' Safari browser showed superior results on the browser tests. The slight slowdown didn't visibly affect app performance, and both of the new iPads are much faster than previous models. High-end, accelerometer-based games like Asphalt 8: Airborne and Need for Speed: Most Wanted are actually more playable here than on the Air, because it's easier to handle and tilt the smaller device. iPhoto and iMovie also work smoothly. The M7 motion coprocessor also makes an appearance here. Apple showed me how diary app Day One, for instance, can monitor how much you walk or travel with the iPad in your bag. iOS is still a simple grid of icons that is passionately focused on touch. Read our in-depth iOS 7 review if you want the full details. The mini's 5-megapixel main camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera are almost exactly the same as the big iPad's. I noticed that when shooting side by side, the big iPad sometimes selected slightly higher ISOs-64 as opposed to 50, 500 as opposed to 400-making the big iPad's photos a little brighter, but just a touch noisier. The HDR mode also still doesn't do much; a bright sky will blow out in any image. I'm really splitting hairs here, though. These are very good cameras, for a tablet. Like the Air, the Mini has a pair of bottom-ported speakers. While the speaker grilles are smaller than the Air's, they generated almost exactly the same volume: 86 or 87 decibels at six inches. Also like on other iPads, if you want to play your video on a TV you can use a $49 HDMI adapter cable or Apple's proprietary wireless streaming system, AirPlay. Also like the Air, the mini comes in 16, 32, 64, and 128GB models, starting at $399 and adding $100 each time you double your capacity. The 128GB tablet has 115GB free for your files. Comparisons and Conclusions If iPads were the only tablets, you'd be able to make your decision here completely based on size. I prefer the iPad Air to the mini because I think that once something isn't truly handheld or pocket-sized (in other words, wider than a Nexus 7 or a Kindle), a roomier view on the world and larger touch targets trump slightly better portability. But that's just a taste issue. The bigger concern is that the mini's small-tablet competitors all cost much less, and they're also great devices. The $199 Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is beautifully built, with a gorgeously sharp screen and a fast Web browser. The $229 Google Nexus 7 is even more portable than the mini and has a competitive app selection. The $359 Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 comes with a pressure-sensitive stylus; an equivalent stylus for the iPad costs at least $80 extra. Yes, I made the same argument last year. It gets a little tougher this year because this year's mini is much nicer than last year's; the processor and screen are both much, much better. But the competition's gotten better, too. So you're paying $170 extra here (up from last year's $120 difference) to get iOS apps rather than Android apps. If you're an iPhone user, or you're attracted by unique iOS exclusives like the Infinity Blade series of games, Toca Boca kids' apps, or the iWork office suite, that investment will probably be worth it. But I think all of those apps play even better on the big iPad. If you're looking for cross-platform applications like Kindle book reading, comics reading, casual games, or Web browsing, you can get them on a great tablet that costs a lot less. That makes the iPad mini a very highly rated tablet, but still not quite our Editors' Choice. </div>

Earnings per share were $1.14, up 6.5%. Consolidated net sales rose 1.6% to $ 114.9 billion and total revenue, including membership and other income, was $115.7 billion, up 1.7% from a year ago. Walmart U.S. sales at stores open at least a year declined .3% in the quarter from a year ago. Overall U.S. net sales were up 2.4% to $67.7 billion. Sam's Club comparable sales, excluding fuel sales,were $14.1 billion, up 1.1%. Walmart International net sales were $33.1 billion, up .2%. The company said it expects earnings per share in the fiscal fourth quarter to be $1.50 to $1.60. It said it expects Walmart comparable-store sales growth for the holiday quarter ending Jan. 31 to be 'relatively flat' and Sam's Club to 'range between flat and 2%.' Looking for a Job? Gross domestic product in the 17-nation euro area rose 0.1 percent in the three months through September, cooling from a 0.3 percent expansion in the second quarter, the European Union's statistics office in Luxembourg said today. That's in line with the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey of 41 economists. Growth in Germany, the region's largest economy, eased to 0.3 percent from 0.7 percent. The slowdown comes as the currency bloc struggles with the legacy of a debt crisis now in its fifth year and just after it emerged from its longest-ever recession in the second quarter. Unemployment (UMRTEMU) stands at a record 12.2 percent and inflation slowed to the lowest level in four years in October, leading the European Central Bank to cut its benchmark rate to a record low last week. 'The bleak GDP estimate shows just how fragile and hesitant the eurozone's recovery is -- so much so that it's questionable whether current economic conditions even qualify as a recovery,' said Nicholas Spiro, managing director of Spiro Sovereign Strategy in London. 'While the slowdown extends to Germany, it's the dire state of the French and Italian economies that looms large.' The euro weakened against the dollar today and was down 0.4 percent at $1.3435 as of 10:55 a.m. London time. Italian Slump The growth in Germany was in line with the median forecast in a Bloomberg survey. The French and Italian economies shrank 0.1 percent, with the latter suffering a ninth straight quarterly slump, extending its longest stretch of decreasing GDP since the creation of the euro. Spanish GDP rose 0.1 percent and Portugal's increased 0.2 percent. With the second and third-biggest economies contracting, Germany continues to drive growth in the euro area, with help from its neighbors in northern Europe. Data today showed Austrian GDP increased 0.2 percent, while the Netherlands exited recession with a 0.1 percent gain. As the euro-area economy struggles to gather strength and inflation cools, the European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate to a record-low 0.25 percent last week. President Mario Draghi repeated his pledge that support from monetary policy will remain in place for as long as necessary. 'We are seeing a painfully slow recovery,' said Frederik Ducrozet, senior euro-area economist at Credit Agricole CIB in Paris. 'I wouldn't expect any positive surprises for next year either. The good news is that the economy will grow, but definitely too slowly to significantly reduce unemployment.' 'True Nightmare' The euro-region jobless rate of 24.1 percent among those under 25 years caused European leaders meeting in Paris this week to boost funds to tackle the issue. 'Youth unemployment is the true nightmare of our country,' Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta said on Oct. 21 in Rome, referring to more than 40 percent of those aged between 15 and 24 searching for work in Italy. Adidas AG, the world's second-biggest maker of sporting goods, this month reported a drop in third-quarter profit and a decline in sales in Western Europe. It said this was partly due to 'ongoing macroeconomic challenges in the region.' As the recovery weakens, inflation in the euro zone slowed to 0.7 percent in October, the lowest in four years. Draghi said last week it may remain low for a 'prolonged period.' He will present new economic forecasts in December. ECB Survey In a prelude to that, the ECB today released its quarterly survey of professional forecasters. Economists cut their outlook for inflation in 2015 to 1.6 percent from 1.8 percent, suggesting an undershoot of the institution's mandate for price stability of just below 2 percent. 'The recovery certainly does not look strong enough to get inflation back close to the ECB's price stability goal in the foreseeable future,' said Nick Kounis, head of macro research at ABN Amro Bank NV in Amsterdam. 'The weak growth figures therefore keep further ECB action very much on the table.' The company’s traditional stronghold has been its diabetes treatments, but the sales of its drugs have been suffering due to increasing competition from companies including Denmark’s Novo Nordisk. Diabetes is increasingly becoming a hard-to-win battle globally and, according to the International Diabetes Federation, the number of people estimated to be living with the disease soared to a new record of 382 million this year. Lilly said on Thursday it will invest $ 350 million in China, which already has the most diabetics globally and where the number is expected to rise to 142.7 million in 2035 from 98.4 million. Lilly also said it plans to invest $ 120 million in France and $ 245 million in Puerto Rico and Indianapolis, Indiana to expand its insulin-active-ingredient and delivery device manufacturing. The Indianapolis-based company has been cutting costs as some of its top-selling medicines lost patent protection and a slowing growth in emerging markets hurt results. Kaufman, best known for playing the incompetent Latka Gravas on the 1970s sitcom Taxi, officially died from lung cancer in 1984. But, appearing at an award show named in Andy's honour, Michael Kaufman said he received a letter from his brother, confirming he was alive, in 1999. He then introduced a woman who claimed to be Andy's 24-year-old daughter. Her age would mean she was born five years after his death. 'He just wanted to be a stay-at-home dad, that's why he wanted to leave the showbiz,' she explained. 'He's pretty much a great dad, and raised us. My mom has her own business... He helps her with that kind of thing, paperwork and stuff, so he can work from home and he doesn't have to be hiding out [or] concealing himself.' 'He just makes us food and takes care of the house.' Her arrival had been preceded by a long anecdote, in which Michael described how, many years ago, he discovered an essay in which Andy detailed plans to fake his death. It was accompanied by a note, saying the comedian would reappear on Christmas Eve 1999, in a specific restaurant. Although Andy failed to show up, Michael was handed a letter explaining that his brother had gone into hiding to live a normal life, and now had a wife and daughter. Audience 'freaked out' 'Start Quote It was chilling, upsetting and absolutely intriguing' End Quote Killy Dwyer, audience member In addition to his role on Taxi, Andy Kaufman was an eccentric performance artist who often staged elaborate pranks that entertained, confused and at times frustrated his fans. He organised wrestling matches between himself and women, impersonated Elvis Presley and, most famously, created a hideous lounge singer alter-ego called Tony Clifton, who reeked of foul-smelling cheese and verbally abused virtually everyone in sight. And, famously, after he played Carnegie Hall, he hired 24 buses and took the 2,800 audience members out for milk and cookies. A life-long health fanatic, he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 33 and died in May 1984. A copy of his death certificate, which lists the cause of death as renal failure, can be seen online. 'The entire room was freaked out,' wrote comedian Killy Dwyer on her Facebook page. 'I get that it is - could - might all be a hoax.... [but] it was as real as anything I've ever seen. There is video. It was chilling, upsetting and absolutely intriguing.' Award show producer Al Parinello told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I witnessed the entire thing and I can tell you without a doubt this was not a prank.' 'You could see by the look on [Michael's] face that it had an emotional impact on him,' said Ed Cavanagh, manager at the Gotham Comedy Club, where the award show took place. But, he added: 'I don't know whether somebody is perpetrating something on [Michael] or not. I'm truly 50-50 on this one.' Witnesses said the unnamed woman had explained the catalyst for her appearance was the death of her grandfather, Andy's father, in July. In a video of the encounter, posted on gossip site TMZ, Michael is seen asking whether his brother is 'getting close to revealing himself'. The woman covers her face and says, 'I don't know what to say.' 'I mean, he was really thinking about coming,' she adds. The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co, or Tepco, said the damaged assemblies – 4.5 meter high racks containing 50-70 thin rods of highly irradiated used fuel – can’t be removed from Fukushima’s Reactor No. 4 using the large cask assigned to taking out more than 1,500 of the assemblies. One of the assemblies was damaged as far back as 1982, when it was mishandled during a transfer, and is bent out of shape, Tepco said in a brief note at the bottom of an 11-page information sheet in August. In a statement from April 2010, Tepco said it found two other spent fuel racks in the reactor’s cooling pool had what appeared to be wire trapped in them. Rods in those assemblies have pin-hole cracks and are leaking low-level radioactive gases, Tepco spokesman Yoshikazu Nagai told Reuters on Thursday. Tepco, which has floundered in trying to bring the plant under control in the two and a half years since the disaster, is now moving to full decommissioning at the six-reactor facility. The most urgent task is to remove the fuel assemblies from the unstable Reactor No. 4, which due to their height – about 18 meters above ground level – are more vulnerable to any new earthquake. The operation is seen as a test of Tepco’s ability to move ahead with decommissioning the whole facility – a task likely to take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars. Lake Barrett, a former U.S. nuclear regulator who is advising Tepco, visited the Fukushima site on Wednesday and endorsed preparations for the removal of the assemblies. “While removal of the fuel is usually a routine procedure in operating a power plant, the damage to the reactor building has made the job more complex,” he said, adding he was “genuinely impressed by the thoroughness of the effort and Tepco’s contingency planning.” Tepco has said the assembly removal process will begin around mid-November, but has not given an exact date, citing what it says are security reasons. The assemblies must first be lifted from their storage frames in the pool and individually placed in a steel cask – kept all the while under water to prevent overheating. The cask, weighing around 90 tones when filled, will then be hoisted by crane from the pool, lowered to ground level and transported by trailer to a common storage pool about 100 meters away. All the companies are in especially fierce competition in the Chinese market, where customers are still replacing their old models with smartphones. Of the smartphones sold, 81.9 percent were running on Google's mobile platform Android, while 12.1 percent used Apple's iOS and 3.6 percent were on Microsoft's Windows Mobile, Gartner said. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> LONDON (AP) — A strain of bird flu that scientists thought could not infect people has shown up in a Taiwanese woman, a nasty surprise that shows scientists must do more to spot worrisome flu strains before they ignite a global outbreak, doctors say. <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> On a more hopeful front, two pharmaceuticals separately reported encouraging results from human tests of a possible vaccine against a different type of bird flu that has been spreading in China since first being identified last spring, which is feared to have pandemic potential. The woman, 20, was hospitalized in May with a lung infection. After being treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics, she was released. One of her throat swabs was sent to the Taiwan Centres for Disease Control. Experts there identified it as the H6N1 bird flu, widely circulating in chickens on the island. The patient, who was not identified, worked in a deli and had no known connection to live birds. Investigators couldn’t figure out how she was infected. But they noted several of her close family and friends also developed flu-like symptoms after spending time with her, though none tested positive for H6N1. The research was published online Thursday in the journal Lancet Respiratory Medicine. Since the H5N1 bird flu strain first broke out in southern China in 1996, public health officials have been nervously monitoring its progress — it has so far killed more than 600 people, mostly in Asia. Several other bird flu strains, including H7N9, which was first identified in China in April, have also caused concern but none has so far mutated into a form able to spread easily among people. “The question again is what would it take for these viruses to evolve into a pandemic strain?” wrote Marion Koopmans, a virologist at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands, in a commentary accompanying the new report. She said it was worrying that scientists had no early warning signals that such new bird flus could be a problem until humans fell ill. Scientists often monitor birds to see which viruses are killing them, in an attempt to guess which flu strains might be troublesome for humans — but neither H6N1 nor H7N9 make birds very sick. Koopmans called for increased surveillance of animal flu viruses and more research into predicting which viruses might cause a global crisis. “We can surely do better than to have human beings as sentinels,” she wrote. The vaccine news is on the H7N9 bird flu that has infected at least 137 people and killed at least 45 since last spring. Scientists from Novavax Inc., a Gaithersburg, Maryland, company, say tests on 284 people suggest that after two shots of the vaccine, most made antibodies at a level that usually confers protection. “They gave a third of the usual dose and yet had antibodies in over 80 percent,” said an expert not connected with the work, Dr. Greg Poland of the Mayo Clinic. “This is encouraging news. We’ve struggled to make vaccines quickly enough against novel viruses,” he said. Results were published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine. In a separate announcement on Thursday, Switzerland-based Novartis announced early tests on its H7N9 vaccine in 400 people showed 85 percent of them got a protective immune response after two doses. China, the world’s second-largest economy, initially announced it was giving just $ 200,000 to the Philippines, which was dwarfed by far larger contributions from countries like Japan, Britain and New Zealand. Many Chinese took to Sina Weibo, the country’s answer to Twitter, to say that the government should give nothing to a country with which China is locked in a bitter diplomatic dispute over islands in the South China Sea. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said he was certain most people were actually saddened by what had happened in the Philippines, where up to 10,000 could have died when Typhoon Haiyan tore through the middle of the country last week. “I don’t know how much comment you saw on the internet, but believe me that the Chinese are a nation who have a lot of sympathy, a people who love peace, who are happy to do good deeds,” he told a daily news briefing. “I believe that the vast majority of the Chinese people are understanding and sympathetic towards the situation of the Philippine people.” He said that China had also donated thousands of tents and blankets, putting the value at 10 million yuan ($ 1.64 million), adding that the aid level would continue to be “changed and adjusted” depending on need.
