The sale comes as Novartis carries out a wider review of operations under new chairman Joerg Reinhardt, who has defended the firm’s diversified nature but stressed he would only hang on to businesses that are among world leaders. Novartis Chief Executive Joe Jimenez said on Monday he had started the strategic review of Novartis’s businesses – including the blood unit which carries out tests to ensure blood transfusions do not contain infections – in the spring and the matter had gone to the board over the summer. He said other potential sell-offs were possible as Novartis examines whether three sub-scale businesses – vaccines and diagnostics, over-the-counter (OTC) products and animal health – have a long-term future in the group. “We need to have global scale in these businesses and right now we’re in that process of gaining scale or considering other options for these businesses,” he said in an interview. Asked whether Novartis might sell the animal health and OTC businesses, he said: “I wouldn’t want to speculate on the outcome. Our objective is to determine what it would take to gain global scale. If that is not possible, (selling) would be a potential outcome. Novartis has three core businesses where it is either market leader or number two in various segments – pharmaceuticals, eyecare and generic medicines. Investors are hoping the company will give more detail on how it plans to allocate capital between its different businesses at an investor day on November 22. Global drugmakers have stepped up the pace of restructuring amid investor demands for management to return more capital to shareholders and unlock value trapped inside large firms. THREE TIMES SALES MULTIPLE The deal with Grifols gives Novartis a good price for the blood transfusion diagnostics unit, which was acquired in 2006 as part of Chiron and which had net sales in 2012 of around $ 565 million. Novartis is keeping other diagnostics that are closely linked to its pharmaceuticals pipeline. Vontobel analyst Andrew Weiss said the transfusion diagnostics business was one with no synergies to the remainder of the Novartis group and the price of three times sales seemed “fair” and in line with valuations in the sector. For Grifols, the world’s third-largest blood products maker, the acquisition means diagnostics will now make up 20 percent of its revenue, up from 4 percent now, and that annual turnover in the business will grow to around $ 1 billion. “The acquisition of Novartis’ diagnostic business is a step further into our vision to become a world leader also in the diagnostics field. To achieve this we knew we needed a significant presence in United States,” said Victor Grifols, chairman of the Spanish company. Grifols shares rose 2.3 percent by 0835 GMT while Novartis added 0.5 percent as the European healthcare sector rose 0.4 percent. Pharmaceutical deals have been among the brightest spots in a small merger and acquisition revival in recent months, with Amgen’s $ 10.4 billion purchase of Onyx Pharmaceuticals in the United States among bigger transactions. Also on Monday, London-listed Shire said it had agreed to buy ViroPharma for about $ 4.2 billion to create a leading force in treatments for rare diseases. Grifols said it would finance its purchase with a $ 1.5 billion loan, pushing up its debt to 3.2 times earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), according to a spokeswoman for the company. Four ladies who are members of MDA (Mom's Demand Action) went to a restaurant in Texas to hold a meeting and were caught flat footed by forty gun enthusiasts who showed up to protest <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/11/10/2921121/dallas-gun-advocates-protest-restaurant-gun-control-advocates/">and sat in the parking lot for two hours with their guns</a>, waiting for them to come out. <blockquote>On Saturday, nearly 40 armed men, women, and children waited outside a Dallas, Texas area restaurant to protest a membership meeting for the state chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a gun safety advocacy group formed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. According to a spokeswoman for Moms Demand Action (MDA), the moms were inside the Blue Mesa Grill when members of Open Carry Texas (OCT) — an open carry advocacy group — “pull[ed] up in the parking lot and start[ed] getting guns out of their trunks.” The group then waited in the parking lot for the four MDA members to come out. The spokeswoman said that the restaurant manager did not want to call 911, for fear of “inciting a riot” and waited for the gun advocates to leave. The group moved to a nearby Hooters after approximately two hours. MDA later released a statement calling OCT “gun bullies” who “disagree[d] with our goal of changing America’s gun laws and policies to protect our children and families.” The statement added that the members and restaurant customers were “terrified by what appeared to be an armed ambush.” A member of OCT responded by tweeting, “I guess I’m a #gunbullies #Comeandtakeit.”</blockquote> I see the point here but I have to disagree with the tactics. Consumers looking to fight off colds this winter might want to consider something other than herbal supplements. Many people might already be weary of foods mislabeled as all-natural. Now, consumers should also be suspicious of herbal products contaminated or substituted with alternative plant species and fillers not listed on the labels, according to a study from the University of Guelph, Ontario published in the journal BMC Medicine. (ABOVE: Surprising “All-Natural” Foods that Might Be Fakes) A DNA analysis tested the authenticity of 44 herbal products (primarily capsules) from 12 companies. Nearly half of the products were considered authentic — indicating that they contained DNA from a species that matched the main ingredient on the label — but many of those products still contained ingredients not listed on the label. Out of the 44 total products, 30 featured product substitution. Only two out of the 12 companies tested did not feature any substitution, contamination or the inclusion of fillers. Some of these contaminants could even pose serious health risks to consumers. (MORE: There’s HOW Much Sugar in This?) One product labeled as St. John’s wort — a plant believed to alleviate mild depression — actually contained Senna alexandrina, which is a Food and Drug Administration-approved laxative that can cause side effects from prolonged use — such as chronic diarrhea, liver damage and abdominal pain. “Currently there are no standards for authentication of herbal products,” the study authors concluded. “Although there is considerable evidence of the health benefits of herbal medicine, the industry suffers from unethical activities by some of the manufacturers, which includes false advertising, product substitution, contamination and use of fillers.” Researchers hope to build a DNA library that companies can use to guarantee their products are authentic. <hr> //

Her life in the public eye had begun because of the great beauty with which she was naturally endowed; she was long considered the most beautiful woman in England. But Cooper was blessed with more than looks, she had striking talent and presence and profound devotion to her craft. The blush of youthful beauty would, as it always does, fade, but her power as an actress only matured and deepened through the years. Dame Gladys Cooper had been about to embark on a Canadian tour with a revival of The Chalk Garden in 1971 when she was stricken with pneumonia and died. (AP) — More than 90 tons of ready-to-eat salads and sandwiches by a California catering company are being recalled after 26 people in three states were sickened by a bacterial strain of E. coli linked to its products, federal health officials said Sunday. Richmond-based Glass Onion Catering are recalling approximately 181,620 pounds of salads and sandwich wraps containing cooked chicken and ham, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said. The products were produced between Sept. 23 and Nov. 6, and were shipped to distribution centers in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Texas. The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bit.ly/1bqp5Z1) the company supplies food to Trader Joe’s, Super Fresh Goods and Delish. The FSIS said it began monitoring a cluster of illnesses involving E. coli O157:H7 on Oct. 29 and then was notified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that California authorities had reported people sickened from eating pre-packaged salads with grilled chicken. In Washington, three people who were sickened with the bacterium told investigators they ate ready-to-eat salads from Trader Joe’s, said Tim Church, a spokesman with the state’s Department of Health. The FSIS says the bacteria can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after being exposed to it. While most people recover within a week, some develop kidney failure.
