For the year so far, the number of passengers is down 3 percent at Port Columbus, a trend that has been noted at airports across the country.</div> Shouldn't have gone down the negative waves path. Should have said something righteous and hopeful for a change. Perhaps it is not too late. These 192 extra people will no doubt lead to all sorts of exciting extra retail sales and employment opportunities for the one person with a well positioned food truck! The budget airline issued its second profit warning in as many months after average fares fell 2% during the first half of the financial year. It said fares were likely to fall by up to 10% by the end of the financial year to 31 March 2014, despite slightly higher forward bookings. The Irish budget airline cut its full-year profit guidance to around €510m (£432m) from €570m, “due entirely to this lower fare environment”. It would be Ryanair’s first fall in profit since 2009. “People have less money to spend,” chief financial officer Howard Millar told Bloomberg. “We had a strong August, since then we’ve started to see a weakening environment.” The bad news sent its shares down 10% and hit the wider airline sector, with easyJet and British Airways group IAG shares both sharply lower. Ryanair had already hit investors with a surprise profits warning in September, cautioning at that time that profits might fall at the lower end or below its previous range. Chief executive Michael O’Leary told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in the same month that he recognised the need to address the “abrupt culture” at the airline, known for its no frills service and raft of additional charges. “We should try to eliminate things that unnecessarily [annoy customers]. I am very happy to take the blame or responsibility if we have a macho or abrupt culture. Some of that may well be my own personal character deformities,” he said at the time. O’Leary said on Monday that the airline had responded to the dip in forward fares and yields by lowering it full year traffic target to just under 81 million from over 81.5 milliob. “We also released a range of lower fares and aggressive seat sales to stimulate traffic, load factors and bookings across all markets,” he added. “Market pricing remains weak, so we will continue to promote low fare seat sales throughout the remainder of both Q3 and Q4. “Forward bookings are running slightly ahead of last year, but the softness in fares and yields continues.” Profit after tax rose 1% to €602m in the first six months of the year to 30 September, with passenger numbers up 2% at 49m. Revenue increased 5% to €3.25m. Ryanair completed €177m of share buy-backs in the first half, and said it would press ahead with its plan to return up to €600m to shareholders through buy-backs and special dividends before the end of the 2015 financial year. </div> //

Just sample from the food processor as you mix. 'A great appetizer that captures the spirit of autumn, and takes only a couple minutes to make! I've never succeeded in making a good hummus before. Though hummus recipes seem simple at first glance, getting the balance of ingredients just right is harder than you might think. For this recipe, the only change I made was leaving out the fresh garlic.  Though that's a key ingredient in most hummus recipes, it's also what usually ruins a recipe if you don't get it just right. Leaving it out actually worked really well, and this hummus turned out to be the best I've made. I topped it off with a sprinkle of paprika and sesame seeds, and paired it with some black pepper crackers. It's delicious!' And upward trends in childhood obesity seem to be playing a major role. Researchers found African American girls started getting breasts just before they turned nine, on average. Among white girls the average age was about nine and a half – a few months earlier than in the 1990s. The findings “confirm an ongoing downward trend in pubertal timing among U.S. girls,” said Dr. Anders Juul. “It’s been worrying for the U.S. as well as the rest of the world,” Juul said. He heads the Department of Growth and Reproduction at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark, and wasn’t involved in the new report. The data come from a long-term study of more than 1,200 girls in and around San Francisco, Cincinnati and New York City. Girls were enrolled in the study between ages six and eight and followed with annual or semi-annual visits. At each visit, staff assessed breast development using Tanner stages, which measure how far along a young person is in puberty. African American girls first showed signs of breast development at eight years, 10 months, on average. That compared to nine years, four months among Hispanic girls and nine years, eight months among white and Asian girls. For white girls, puberty hit about four months earlier than in a 1997 study that also measured breast development. That study concluded girls were entering puberty earlier than in the past. Heavier girls tended to start developing at younger ages. Rising obesity rates seem to be a “prime driver” behind breast development starting earlier, Dr. Frank Biro and his colleagues wrote Monday in Pediatrics. Still, Juul’s own work has suggested obesity isn’t behind earlier breast development among Danish girls. Researchers said how much exercise girls get, diabetes precursors and chemicals in the environment that can mimic hormones may all play a role in pushing up the onset of puberty. “One of our challenges is going to be, there are literally hundreds of chemicals that could be candidates,” Biro said. He works in the adolescent medicine division at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. Where girls live, meat and dairy in their diets and family stress have also been tied to earlier development, Marcia Herman-Giddens wrote in a commentary on the report. She studies maternal and child health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The study didn’t look at when girls started getting their periods, or at other measures of puberty. The researchers said maturing at a younger age could come with long-term risks for some girls. For instance, those who hit puberty earlier could be at higher risk of breast and other cancers because their bodies spend more years making and being exposed to estrogen. They also tend to start having sex or using drugs and alcohol at younger ages and are more likely to become depressed or develop low self-esteem. “You’ve got a 10-year-old who looks like a 14-year-old. We interact with kids based on the way that they look,” Biro said. “Kids interact with each other that way also.” “One of the things the parents of these early maturing kids need to do is they need to monitor them more closely,” he told Reuters Health. That includes talking about sex earlier. But Juul said parents shouldn’t be overly worried. The data about early puberty and problems down the line come from studies that asked women when they first got their period, he said. That typically happens two to four years after breasts start developing. People came up with lots amazing theories for whodunit… As David Tennant recalls: “One of the joys of that was the theories people would come up with for the crime. That first shot of Danny with blood dripping off his hand… Somebody came up with the notion that tractor fuel is red, which… proved that he’d been siphoning the petrol.” Writer Chris Chibnall discusses the same theory and others with Olivia Colman, he says: “A few theories I thought were much better. Next year we’ll be crowd-sourcing the plot.” 2. Olivia Colman comes in for plenty of good-natured ribbing from Tennant and the rest of the team… He laughs, when discussing the chemistry with his co-star: “It helps that we don’t get on. I find her loathsome, if I never have to see that woman again…” Producer Richard Stokes joins in, adding: “It helps that she’s the most difficult person in the industry to work with.” Tennant chimes in: “Difficult, very difficult.” There’s a real warmth among the whole cast and crew though. As writer Chris Chibnall states: “There was a real family atmosphere on this. I know everybody says that on every show, but there was on this.” 3. Tennant and Colman nearly made a sitcom together 10 years before Broadchurch… He explains their fateful “nearly” project: “We’d done a reading of a sitcom that a friend of mine wrote. Had that gone ahead, we’d have been husband and wife. [But] lots of creatives came and said they didn’t want to make it.” Richard Stokes, acting as one of the creatives, says: “Who are these people? They have no future.” 4. The cast and the crew didn’t know the killer’s identity at the outset and didn’t find out until shortly before filming the final episode… Tennant explains: “We were as in the dark as the audience. I was playing a police officer who didn’t know who’d done it. If you know what’s coming, it’s hard not to play a sense of that. We started filming the last block before we got the final script through. I was reading it in a car back to London, Olivia was reading it on a train, we were having feverish text messages.” Richard Stokes adds: “The crew and the rest of the cast bought into not knowing. Chris came down to tell everybody. We were shooting episode five, they said we don’t want to know the end until we get the script. They enjoyed the not knowing.” One ITV executive didn’t know who’d done it until they delivered the final episode not long before transmission. 5. Was Broadchurch boosted by the Olympic effect? Tennant says: “The human desire to be surprised is stronger than the human desire to find out what your Christmas present is.” Stokes posits one theory: “We were helped by the Olympics factor, save the surprise, it was a real joy in not knowing what’s going to happen. Even with Twitter, the whole rise of social media, there was a genuine collective desire.” Tennant adds: “It was a huge fear for us, the secrets would be blown.” Director James Strong believes the old-fashioned transmission, rather than the box set-era binge viewing helped: “The fact that it was on every week, the fact that they had to wait for the next show, [helped].” 6. ITV was supportive to the point of letting the show’s producers dictate how the end credits worked… Richard Stokes: “We went back to ITV and said rather than the normal white on black credits, can we have a picture? [And] please don’t squeeze [the credits], like you normally do.” ITV complied with the request… Oh, and as writer Chris later reveals about the last episode: “They moved the News At 10 for us.” 7. Writer Chris Chibnall panicked a mere 15 minutes before the final episode was due to air… “The quarter of an hour before it went out was the most terrified I’ve ever been. [Executive producer Jane Featherstone and he] texted each other, I’d talked to the press all day, we texted each other I said ‘I think I’ve got it wrong. I think we’ve done the wrong ending. I think the whole country is going to hunt me out. It was 20 minutes of hell. Five minutes into act two, [I thought] ‘whoa, maybe it’s all right’. There was just a moment where I thought ‘people really care about this ending, I’ve messed it up.’” 8. EastEnders was an unlikely inspiration… Writer Chris Chibnall reveals that the discovery of the identity of the father of Michelle’s baby in the 1980s was an inspiration for how they revealed the identity of the killer, especially when it came to how they edited it, as did a walk that he took while on a recce for locations. And the final scene? Chibnall reveals that was “slightly nicked from Field Of Dreams”. 9. Much of Broadchurch was filmed without rehearsals… To keep the authenticity of the characters’ behaviour and reactions to the unfolding drama, much of it was shot without rehearsal, much of the footage used was from the first take. The pivotal scene involving Olivia Colman and the killer was shot in this way and, as director James Strong says: “It was no rehearsal, first take. 95 per cent [of that scene] is all the first take.” “For the violence [in that scene],” Colman notes, I rehearsed with the stunt man, [the killer] rehearsed with a stunt man. We didn’t see each other [before]. It was all filmed in sequence. Neither of us knew what the other would do. He was padded up as much as possible, I went to let rip and lost it. I kicked him without thinking I was going to hurt him. I was just really loving this bit. You never get to kick a human. [After laughter] That didn’t sound good, did it.” 10. Broadchurch will return… The end credits revealed a surprise. As Chibnall concludes: “Our favourite thing was we kept it secret that we were coming back for a second series and had a plan.” Colman adds: “That was fun, you just sent a text saying watch the end.” Chibnall: “Broadchurch will return [as it says it on the screen]… Yeah, it’s just like James Bond. We’re going to come back and do some more, aren’t we Olivia and James?” They both cheer…

<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> By Kate Kelland, Health and Science Correspondent LONDON (Reuters) – HIV epidemics are becoming more concentrated in marginalized groups such as sex workers, drug users and gay men, and could defy global attempts to combat AIDS without a change in attitudes, according to a U.N. special envoy. Michel Sidibe, formerly head of UNAIDS and now tackling HIV and AIDS in Eastern Europe, says he would like to be able to celebrate without reservation vast global progress made in the past decade, but stubborn infection rates and alarming growth of outbreaks in hard-to-reach populations make that difficult. The risk, he says, is that as the world turns the tide of the generalized global AIDS epidemic, the virus will return to being a disease that plagues only certain groups, and the political will to overcome it there may fade. “If we do not address the roots of the problem, if we do not address stigma, discrimination and inappropriate legislation, if we don’t look at these people from a public health perspective, rather than from a delinquent, criminal perspective as we do now, then the trend will only go on,” Sidibe said in an interview. “Then the AIDS epidemic will become more and more a sum of these concentrated epidemics.” EXTRAORDINARY PROGRESS BREEDS HOPE Some 35.3 million people worldwide are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS, but the rising number of patients reflects great strides in recent years in developing sophisticated HIV tests and combination AIDS drugs and getting them to many of those who need them to stay alive. The annual AIDS death toll is falling, dropping to 1.6 million people in 2012, down from a peak of 2.3 million in 2005, and there are also steadily declining rates of new HIV infections: a third fewer in 2013 than in 2011. The progress has generated much hope – and many headlines – about the possible end of AIDS, or a potential world without HIV, or the chance of an AIDS-free generation, in our lifetimes. Sidibe refers to this – both the progress and the hope – as “extraordinary”. “I’m really concerned about the future of the AIDS epidemic, especially at a time when we are perhaps a little too optimistic because of the huge progress we are making from a technological and scientific perspective,” he said. “As we celebrate the extraordinary progress, we should also be conscious that we will not stop HIV and AIDS by just having more sophisticated drugs and only focusing on the generalized epidemic and not focusing enough on the complexities of the concentrated epidemics.” The worrisome groups are fairly clearly defined: Injecting drug users, who can pass the AIDS virus to each other by sharing needles and syringes, prostitutes and sex workers, who are often criminalized and have little access to health service, and gay and bisexual men – the population in which the HIV epidemic first started. A TALE OF TWO WOMEN To illustrate how little has changed in the battle against HIV among drugs users – particularly in regions such as Eastern Europe and central Asia – Sidibe tells the stories of two women. The first is Andrée, a drug user he met in Paris in 1986 who had no hope of effective HIV treatment, since there was none yet developed, and who ultimately died a lonely death. The second was Larissa from Yekaterinburg in Russia, a drug addict repeatedly arrested and locked up, deprived of medications for years and at one time sentenced to five years in a labor camp. “These stories are remarkably similar,” he said. “But Larissa’s is not from 1986, it’s from this year. Some 25 years passed between my meeting these two women, but their predicament was depressingly, tragically, the same.” Among gay men, Sidibe said, the situation is little better. In poor and middle-income countries, men who have sex with men and female sex workers are 19 and 13 times more likely to have HIV, respectively, than the rest of the population. Even in wealthy regions like western Europe and North America, HIV rates among gay men – or men who have sex with men (MSM) as Sidibe refers to them – stubbornly refuse to shift. HIV AMONG GAY MEN “In MSM populations, there is no sign it has decreased,” said Sidibe. “It has either been a stable number of new infections every year for 10 years, or it is an increasing trend. And this, in western Europe at least, is in the context of basically free and easy access to therapy and services.” Elsewhere, in China, for example, gay men alone account for more than 33 percent of new HIV infections, and projections indicate that gay men may account for half or more of all new infections in Asia by 2020. Sidibe admits that he is as frustrated and worried now, faced with these smaller but relentless HIV epidemics, as he was more than a decade ago when the vast generalized HIV and AIDS outbreak in Africa looked too overwhelming to begin to tackle. “We are a bit in disarray. We don’t know quite what it is that we should do. Here we are, we have all the technology, we have extraordinary scientific progress, and we just cannot translate that into making a difference in these populations.” Yet if nothing changes, the AIDS virus may never be beaten. Sidibe called for a “shift in the collective mindset” to put equity and human rights at the centre of the battle against HIV in these groups: “If we do not deliver the right response, we will fail to deliver an end to AIDS,” he said. <h2>Tonight’s episode was bloody unpredictable, but did it take things a twist too far?</h2> <div class="body"> You know that moment in this week’s installment of Homeland where Carrie Mathison takes off the polygraph equipment and ends her big “job interview” with terrorist mastermind Majid Javadi, and Javadi’s all “What. Are. You. Doing?” That’s kind of a familiar sensation after watching this episode, isn’t it? For both good and bad, “Still Positive,” directed by Lesli Linka Glatter from a script by Alexander Cary and Barbara Hall, threw curveballs left and right. Some of them landed right in the strike zone, but others beaned the proverbial batter. Let’s start with the strong stuff. Turning the tables on Javadi so quickly – I mean, like, what, within ten total minutes of screentime from when she was initially abducted by his goons? – was one of Homeland‘s trademark plotting masterstrokes. Ever since the pilot, which revealed the truth about Brody when most other shows would have drawn out the is-he-or-isn’t-he guessing game for nearly an entire season, Homeland‘s surprises have frequently come not from doing something totally unexpected, like the reveal that Carrie and Saul were in cahoots about her mania and hospitalization, but from doing an expected thing far, far earlier than expected. Think back to the first half of Season Two, when Saul discovered Brody’s martyrdom tape and Carrie busted and turned him all within the first few episodes. It was clear Carrie and Saul were gonna drop the hammer on Javadi at some point; doing it in literally her first meeting with the guy was a fresh, fun take on the way spy games usually play out. Seven Ways to Save ‘Homeland’ What’s more, it gave Carrie the chance to do something she hasn’t done in forever: swagger. She’s spent pretty much every moment since flipping Brody back to the side of the U.S. in Season Two in some kind of distress: captured by Abu Nazir, covering for Brody’s involvement in Vice President Walden’s death, flattened by the Langley bombing, helping Brody escape, deliberately experiencing a manic episode, getting sold out by Saul to Congress, spending time in the psych ward, pretending to sell out her country to Iran, running around trying to find Dana Brody, getting kidnapped by Javadi’s minions. Sure, the whole scheme with Saul showed she’s still a brilliant operative, but her brilliance hinged on being unhinged. Here, it was demonstrated by her coolly stopping her own polygraph test and methodically telling one of the most skilled and dangerous intelligence operatives in the world that she’d beaten him at his own game. She even got some good jokes in at his expense, like when she told him they were going to have to leave together: “Now?” “You can finish your cigarette.” Smoke on that, Javadi. And at first it seems that Javadi will be similarly enhanced as a character by this development. We’d already heard that he was more of an opportunist than a fanatic, having transferred his loyalty from the Shah to the Ayatollah when he saw which way the wind was blowing. Saul’s story about Javadi’s betrayal of four of Saul’s informants cemented this opportunism in brutality, but still, Javadi’s a far cry from a true believer like Nazir. His behavior after discovering that Carrie had tricked him – applauding her with an elegant “Brava,” nervously smoking his cigarette, asking about how long she and Saul had been working on this with something approaching awe, calling Saul by his first name to begin with – further conveyed the idea that, his bosses and his methods aside, this guy isn’t a world away from the CIA. Certainly he’s got more in common with a guy like Dar Adal, who at that very moment was busy switching his own allegiance from Saul to Senator Lockhart, than he does with the devout Nazir.  But Javadi’s subsequent suburban killing spree undoes a lot of that hard work. Not because it’s implausible, which is frequently the main problem with the actions of Homeland‘s villain characters – it’s not that hard to believe that in nearly 35 years, a high-ranking Iranian intelligence official could have tracked down his defector ex-wife. Nor simply because it was brutal – Homeland‘s renewed commitment this season to depicting violence as horrifying, from the mosque massacre in Caracas to this repulsive outburst of domestic violence, is welcome in a genre that could easily devolve into dubiously bloodless shoot-’em-ups. No, the problem with Javadi’s murder of his wife and daughter-in-law is that it makes him a mere monster. As both a glib political opportunist and a gleeful killer of women whose only crime was not wanting to have anything to do with him, how is Javadi ever going to get anyone in the audience to see his side of things in the slightest? Even Nazir had the genuine trauma of the loss of his son and the simple beauty and peace of his religious faith (the prayer-based aspects of it, of course, not the bomb-based ones) going for him. The idea seems rather to be that it’s Saul, Carrie, Quinn et al who are made more complex and conflicted by their involvement with a guy like this, by their cover-up of his crimes, but not including the man himself in that complexity is a wasted opportunity. It’s also a politically dubious move: Homeland‘s done little to erase the impression that it takes the same dim view of Iran, and the same paranoiac assessment of its hostile intent and capabilities to make good on it, as your average Cheney. It’s a shame, in part because Homeland could really use an unimpeachable storyline right about now. I don’t care how funny the image a drawer full of positive pregnancy tests was – and it was pretty freaking funny – but giving Carrie a pregnancy plot to handle on top of everything else was this show at its soapiest, and most baffling. (Though I guess it explains how she remembered the address of her red-headed one-night-stand: She’d have to find out where to collect child support.) And the Dana material is as inert as ever: The well-meaning religious busybody at the government office who intrusively asks to pray for her and her family was a fine little detail, but not enough to make this Lifetime-movie storyline worth the screentime. Eh…I may come off as being intolerable from time to time, but for the most part, I am just a simple guy, with simple needs, and one of those needs is friendship. And in all honesty, even if I do appear to be an smarmy asshole to you… I wouldn’t be intolerable, smarmy, nor even talking to you today, if it weren’t for the friendship I garnered from a woman whom I moved in with, thirteen years ago… Literally, yes literally Jayman, and others, I don’t know at which rest stop I’d be sleeping if weren’t for the Schmoopster. Schmoop, aka Beth, allowed me into her home some thirteen years ago while she herself was trying to spiral up from a downward trend in her life.  Even only quasi-knowing me through my sister, she opened up her home to me, and afforded me a place to stay. I am not a believer in pre-destination, nor the Arabic belief of kismet, but let me tell you, moving in with Schmoop lo those thirteen years ago was out of the blue and the best thing that ever happened to me in my adult life…and for that, I am grateful. We get along, and well, if one has that, they are way ahead of the game. Schmoop hates that I talk so much, yet laughs at what I say.  I hate it that she is not a “people person”, but love it when she does take a liking to someone.  She hates waking up on Sunday mornings to me cursing Paul Piatt’s latest bad take, and yet… She loves the IWS Radio Show, and even more so, she hopes it will lead to something big for Jay and I. I guess the glue that holds Schmoop and I together is that we just want to be able to sit down at the end of day, and no matter what has happened at work, with our families, or between us, clink a can of beer in cheers with our best friend. We do that every night, and I hope to do the same thing until the day I die. Here’s wishing a Happy 13th Anniversary to my best friend Schmoop, and to a woman who will always be the love of my life.
