<strong>Head, Digital Services Unit, Technical Services -</strong> <strong><span style="color: #48286d;">Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library</span></strong>, New Haven. Position Focus: Under the direction of the Head of Technical Services and working in close collaboration with units across the Beinecke Library and the Yale University Library, the Head of Beinecke Digital Services leads and coordinates the Beinecke Library’s digitization program, digital projects, and user experience initiatives that enhance access to and use of Beinecke Library and its collections, including the Beinecke Digital Library, collection web pages, and online exhibits. The Head leads and provides technical expertise in the investigation, development, and application of interfaces and tools that affect the user experience, as well as metadata and digitization workflows and standards. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services liaises with the Yale University Library’s Information Technology and Digital Initiatives departments and works collaboratively with Yale University Library staff. The Head may represent the Beinecke within Yale University Library and nationally and internationally in discussions and committees pertaining to user experience initiatives, metadata, and digitization at Yale and is active professionally. The Head of Beinecke Digital Services supervises the work of three senior photographers and three metadata catalog assistants to coordinate and supervise metadata creation, digitization, color management, and quality control activities. The Head participates in the Beinecke’s Technical Services Management Group to develop technical services strategies, policies, and procedures for the Beinecke Library. Required Education, Skills and Experience: 1. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline in the humanities or social sciences may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science. 2. Excellent supervisory and strong leadership abilities. 3. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of digital library standards and practices, such as digitization, digital preservation, standards for media content, metadata, controlled authorities, and user experience. 4. Project management skills, especially the ability to devise and achieve agreed-upon completion dates for projects; ability to multitask and keep priorities aligned to objectives; ability to identify and analyze problems in the context of special collections technology initiatives. 5. Excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills, especially the ability to convey and explain to non-technical audiences the importance and impact of technology trends and issues relevant to the YUL’s operation and mission. 6. Strong commitment to customer service with well-developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities to work collegially with staff, researchers, and colleagues, especially in the context of technology initiatives that are specific to academic libraries and special collections. The married mother of three works full time and is still paying off her loans. “We are not asking for a bailout. We are asking for more control over our finances.”... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">On average, these residents graduate college with $22,400 in student loan debt if they leave school after earning a bachelor’s degree. With current interest rates on the federal loans, the graduates will pay $388 a month for the next 18.7 years, or until they are in their 40s... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"> the student loan authority would be charged to create a system to buy loans — federal or private — and refinance them at a lower rate. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The Hansen-Mason bill would also allow the yearly amount paid in student loan debt to be written off as a state tax deduction. Currently, only the interest on the loans can be used as a tax write-off.</blockquote>We learned about the bill from our Teamster brother, Tom Bennett, president of Teamsters Local 200 in Milwaukee. Teamsters score major victory over sleep apnea guidance

Here's good news for Teamster truck drivers and anyone who turns a key for a living: <a href="http://www.teamster.org/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters </a>who might be at risk for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea" rel="nofollow">sleep apnea</a> won't have to undergo costly tests or lose time at work because of federal regulators.  The International Brotherhood of Teamsters successfully lobbied Congress to force<a href="http://fmcsa.dot.gov/" rel="nofollow"> federal trucking regulators</a> to set strict guidelines for when they can require screening, testing and treatment for sleep apnea.<br /><br />The House and Senate passed the bill unanimously, and President Obama signed it into law earlier this week. Now, federal regulators will have to listen to the Teamsters, owner-operators, trucking and bus associations and YOU before issuing regulations on sleep apnea.<br /><br />This is a good thing because regulators were coming up with "guidance" for testing and treating sleep apnea for truckers and other CDL holders. That "guidance" could have cost commercial truck drivers thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses. It could have cost them their jobs.<br /><br />The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) actually stated that 28 percent of CDL holders have sleep apnea. FMCSA's guidance in 2012 set arbitrary standards -- like 17-inch necks and certain body mass indexes -- that would have forced many Teamsters to go through the potentially costly testing.<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"> Teamsters General President <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/james-p-hoffa">James P. Hoffa</a> said in a <a href="http://www.teamster.org/content/teamsters-stop-fmcsa-attack-truck-drivers" rel="nofollow">statement</a>, We cannot allow federal regulators to make uninformed decisions that will cost millions of people a lot of money that they can’t afford to spend right now... </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">This law, which passed the House with a unanimous vote, protects millions of working men and women who turn a key for a living from being forced to spend money on a test they may not need at the whim of a federal agency.</blockquote>The new law won't absolutely prevent doctors from referring certain drivers for testing during their medical exams, it will postpone mandatory screening for three years or more.  During that time, you can be sure the Teamsters' voices will be heard!<br />

Good Health Is Not Just An Illusion

<div style='font-style:italic;' class='uawbyline'>By Dr Pj Prakash</div><br /><br /> <div class='uawarticle'>You have always wanted to find out about, or possibly enhance your current knowledge of, nutrition and how to obtain it from your diet. The tips and hints we provide in this article, when followed as suggested, should help you to either improve on what you have already done, or help you start off well.<br /> <br /> Although salads are healthy, the salad dressing is not. Dressings that are creamy tend to have more fat and lower nutritional value. Choose, instead, a vinaigrette or a home-made version with vinegar and some olive oil. Adding healthy toppings to a salad (like cranberries or walnuts) will also improve their benefits.<br /> <br /> Limit the amount of juice and soda that are consumed in your household. While juice does contain some vitamins, it is not a good substitute for eating the whole fruit with the skin. Soda is basically flavored, carbonated water that costs a lot of money. For optimum health you should spend your calories on healthy foods, not on liquid.<br /> <br /> Research the various nutritional and health benefits of fruits and vegetables. This way you can incorporate a mix into your diet that takes preventative measures, as well as nutritional measures, into account. The prolonged health benefits of the right choices in nutrition are as important as the daily needs of the body.<br /> <br /> Try to substitute healthy alternatives for fatty or sugary foods you enjoy. For example, instead of a bowl of ice cream, you can have some yogurt with fruit. Instead of french fries, try half of a baked potato. You don't have to cut out all the good tasting food in your life, just make healthier choices about what the tasty things you do eat.<br /> <br /> Beans, beans what a wonderful food. Studies have shown that eating beans can reduce your chances of developing heart disease and could also prevent breast cancer. These great properties are thanks to beans' high protein, vitamin, and fiber content. To reduce the chance of indigestion, add them to your diet gradually.<br /> <br /> When considering your nutrition, do not over do it with vitamins and supplements. Multivitamin pills can never replace the amount of nutrients that you receive in eating food. While they are good to compliment your meal with, never substitute a pill for real food. Your body might not react well to a large intake of concentrated vitamins.<br /> <br /> Use the daily caloric intake requirement to fuel your body with healthy, nutritious food. Eating roughly 2,000 calories of nutritious vegetables, whole grains and proteins is better than eating 2,000 calories of junk food. What you eat is just as important as how much you eat.<br /> <br /> When trying to have a healthy diet, add new healthy foods. Try something that you have never had before. You may be missing out on something that you really would enjoy. There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that people never try. You can start introducing new foods into your diet slowly. You should try something new once a week.<br /> <br /> As wonderful as it feels to find a delicious, distinctive food that is both crave-worthy and good for you,it is important to pace yourself. Believe it or not, even the most delightful treat will get old if you make it the focus of your diet. Avoid burnout; mix it up a little to keep yourself interested and inspired.<br /> <br /> To summarize, there is quite a bit to learn about nutrition. Do not be overwhelmed though, because the basics are easy enough to implement. Kelly Clarkson also saw a nice improvement on the chart position of her greatest hits album, improving from #192 to #152 this week. Her new Christmas album, "Wrapped in Red",  debuts in just a couple weeks, so that will put her back on the charts in a much stronger position. Kelly has been very diligent in releasing an album for the last three years right before the holiday shopping season, "Stronger" in October 2011, "Greatest Hits" last November, and "Wrapped in Red" this year. From here out it all depends on promotion, appearances and the all important radio airplay to push the album into gold territory. It would be sad if "See You Tonight" does not hit gold since it is actually a better album than either of his previous top sellers, and should produce the most hit singles if radio would only give his songs a chance. What goes on in the church of God doesn’t go to the press...I’m not going to talk to the press about things that are matters internal to the church of the Living God. It is none of their business. <u><span style="color: red;">And they can’t possibly get it right, and they don’t get it right, so why do you take it to the world of unbelief</span></u>? Whether that be the court, whether that be the press? 'Well there’s just no other way to handle it.’ Yes there is. Commit it to the Lord God Almighty.” </b></i></span></div><br />I hope the students at SWBTS can see just how stupid this is. Telling pastors that they should not talk to members of the press because they are "the world of unbelief".<br /><br />First of all, why the presumption that the press "can't possibly get it right". What is "it"? He must mean that they can't accurately report truth or facts about something that happens in a church that might be of interest to the public. If the press can't get it right because they are "the world of unbelief", and that pastors should "commit it to the Lord God Almighty", then why does that JUST work in matters of the press? Why not in medicine? Why not just commit your health to "the Lord God Almighty"? Why go to a doctor, after all he or she operates in the "world of unbelief".<br /><br />This is just another example of how pastors in the SBC are being trained to think they are some special anointed class of Christian that answers to absolutely no one but God himself. <br /><br />And another reason why religious institutions will eventually lose their tax-exempt status. They don't want to participate in the basic rules of right in our society - like the press being a force to keep large institutions in check. Pastors and their churches are above answering to the local reporter apparently, they are "the church of the living God" and don't answer to anyone in the press.<br /><br />Not to worry, the common folk will get the word out about misbehaving pastors and idiotic theology and doctrine via blogs, and the common folk in churches will continue to talk to the press when it is necessary.<br /><br />And pastors, whatever you do, don't talk to recalcitrant bloggers. And don't go to those doctors who use science and medicine to heal people - they are in the "world of unbelief". Just trust the Lord God Almighty to heal you.

The production also marked the return to Stratford of David Tennant, taking the title role in his first collaboration with Doran since <i>Hamlet </i>and <i>Love’s Labours Lost</i> (2008). Expectation has been high since the announcement of the play in January; those expectations have indeed been met and the outcome is stunning.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">David Tennant, it must be said, is superb in one of Shakepeare’s most challenging roles, giving the misunderstood, self-absorbed and unlikeable king both pathos and a wry humour. His Richard is a lofty creature, a spoilt child in the body of a man, vain, haughty, capricious and selfish. Tennant floats around the stage, an androgynous figure clad in flowing robes with his lengthy locks cascading as, with head held back, sneering down his nose, he makes decisions seemingly on a whim. Yet the power of David Tennant is that we can go from recoiling in horror from Richard at his mistreatment of the dying Gaunt to, just a few scenes later, choking with emotion along with him as he realises that he has taken his divine right to kingship for granted and that his power is now slipping from his grasp. The turning point in our feelings towards Richard must be the point at which he learns of the fate of Bushey and Green: the numbing shock and horror is clear on Tennant’s face and the emotional charge runs on through to a poignant ‘death of kings’ speech. Nigel Lindsay is perfect as a commanding Bolingbroke: even in the early scenes it is possible to see the king that this nobleman and warrior will soon become. Michael Pennington plays John of Gaunt with a fierce dignity, railing against injustices and standing up for what he holds dear right to his dying breath. Oliver Ford Davies gives an astounding performance as the Duke of York, an honourable, traditional man who finds himself suddenly encumbered with the great burden of governing a fractured nation. He is torn and bewildered as he struggles to reconcile his obedience to his king with what he realises to be the ethical course of action. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i>Richard II</i> is not a play known for its wealth of strong female roles. Emma Hamilton finds in the role of the Queen a sense of loyalty and love, even though that love might be unrequited. Her performance is bookended by those of two older women. Jane Lapotaire makes an explosive return to the RSC in her single scene as the grief-wracked Duchess of Gloucester, while Marty Cruickshank as the Duchess of York wrings humour out of what could be a grim situation as she pleads for the life of her son, Aumerle.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Oliver Rix also has to be commended for his loyal and emotional Aumerle. Richard’s gentler moments are shared with his kinsman, and as Richard’s fall becomes unavoidable, the young man struggles to accept what his king has already understood. Their obvious tenderness is overplayed by neither Rix nor Tennant.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The open space of the theatre lends itself to a stark yet atmospheric set. Greg Doran spoke during development of the verticality that he perceived in the play and through the minimalist designs of Stephen Brimson Lewis he makes the most of the building’s height, from upper galleries to the understage and including a mechanical gangway from which the King distances himself from his subjects. Ironically as Richard falls he becomes less cruel and feckless and more humble and human and almost likeable. There are distinct parallels, certainly suggested by his appearance, with a Christ-like figure on the road to crucifixion. However, it is notable that the themes of political wastefulness, ambition, greed and backstabbing and general public dissatisfaction remain as relevant now as they were when it was originally performed. Our public figures, the great and the good, are never more than a few errors in judgement away from falling from grace and there is always someone waiting in the wings to take their place. David Tennant has achieved the task here of ensuring that his fallen king is neither hated nor mocked but instead has the ready sympathy of the audience.
