We're seeing <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/graph/?g=n45">no increase in total miles traveled</a> though. Think that's going to be sustainable over the long-term?<br /><br />If the trend channel in blue represents rising productivity, then what does the trend in red represent? Rose-colored glasses?<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malinvestment">Malinvestment</a><br /><br /><div style="color: #666666;"><i>Malinvestment is a concept developed by the Austrian School of economic thought, that refers to <span style="color: red;">investments of firms being badly allocated</span> due to what they assert to be an <span style="color: red;">artificially low cost of credit</span> and an unsustainable increase in money supply, <span style="color: red;">often blamed on a central bank</span>. This concept is central to the Austrian business cycle theory. Austrian economists such as Nobel laureate F. A. Hayek advocate the idea that malinvestment occurs due to the combination of fractional reserve banking and artificially low interest rates <span style="color: red;">misleading relative price signals which eventually necessitate a corrective contraction—a boom followed by a bust</span>.</i></div><br />Based on the chart above, malinvestment at tire dealers seems more than likely to me. Where else do you suppose it is appearing? Or did I just get lucky and think this one up in isolation?<br /><br />Before you answer, I started with the premise that I would see malinvestment in tire dealers. I then went looking for malinvestment. Being able to include the "tired" pun was just a bonus.<br /><br />It would not surprise me if this very same malinvestment theory could be applied to <a href="http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/graph/?g=n46">retail trade</a> in general. For example, picture retail salespeople and mall traffic. I do not have easy access to reliable mall traffic though, so this chart will have to suffice for now.<br /><br />Who really believes that malinvestment based growth is sustainable over the long-term? The first concerns a PALESTINIAN assessment of the US administration’s ability to dictate terms for a settlement that are not acceptable to ISRAEL. So what is it that makes him so popular? In my opinion it’s David himself that has led to his huge success as an actor.</span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">His friendly, down to earth approach and staunch work ethic make him popular with his contemporaries and he is often praised by co-stars for being a pleasure to work with. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and union leaders, the crowd of workers chanted "Let us work" and "Shut down the shutdown." Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the jobs of dedicated public servants should not be held hostage by tea party fanatics:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Two weeks ago a shooting took place not too far from here at the Navy Yard. Hundreds of brave federal police officers responded to stop the carnage and restore security. Today those dedicated officers are not being paid. That's outrageous.</blockquote>Sanders noted the budget that Republican extremists refuse to pass is already a very conservative one. He said there's no reason for them to shut down the government over a budget that is more to the right-wing's liking than anyone else's.<br /><br />As the crowd grew, furloughed federal employees talked about the uncertainty and hardship their families are facing during the shutdown. An aviation safety inspector said he can't do his job to make sure planes are safe to fly. The three other Idol winners with albums in the Top 200 were all released in 2012, and now all of them have fallen out of the Top 100. This marks the first week Phillip Phillip's "The World From the Side of the Moon" has fallen out of the Top 100 after 45 weeks, at #117 (from #87 last week), but he is actually <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/phillip-phillips-to-re-release-debut-album-with-new-live-cuts.htm" target="_blank">re-releasing a "special" edition</a> of the album in November with three live tracks, which will also be available as an EP. That should give him a new sales boost in November, at least from his fans. Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" has slipped to #127 for its second trip out of the Top 100 in 74 weeks. And Kelly Clarkson's "Greatest Hits: Chapter One" album hangs in the Top 200 at #171 (from #164 last week.) Frankly I am amazed Kelly's album has lasted on the chart that long since its release back in the Holiday Season of 2012. Having a greatest hits album stay in the Top 200 for two holiday seasons is pretty incredible. I will be interested to see if it can stay in the Top 200 before her new Christmas album, "Wrapped in Red", is released at the end of this month.<br /><br />With all the Idol albums slipping on the charts, the next Idol album is fast approaching, Scotty McCreery's "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/See-Tonight-Deluxe-Scotty-McCreery/dp/B00EUUJICM" target="_blank">See You Tonight</a>" in about 10 days. Since his second album was actually a Christmas album, this should be considered his official "sophomore studio" album, and that means we can compare its sales with the other sophomore studio albums from previous winners. First I must sort the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idol_alumni_album_sales" target="_blank">list of those albums</a> to see how they stack up:<br /><br />1) Kelly Clarkson "Breakaway" (2004) 6.3M<br />2) Carrie Underwood "Carnival Ride" (2007) 3.3M<br />3) Fantasia Barrino "Fantasia" (2006) 530K<br />4) Ruben Studdard "I Need An Angel" (2004) 483K<br />5) Jordin Sparks "Battlefield" (2009) 177K<br />6) David Cook "This Loud Morning" (2011) 130K<br />7) Taylor Hicks "The Distance" (2009) 52K<br />8) Kris Allen "Thank You Camellia" (2012) 35K<br />9) Lee DeWyze "Frames" (2013) 3K*first week numbers<br /><br />Of the winners second albums, only Kelly and Carrie had huge, platinum hit albums with them, and Fantasia and Ruben also had very strong sales with their sophomore releases. None of the other winners have broken more than 200K with the sales of their second studio albums. (I am disregarding non-winners like Clay Aiken, Daughtry, Kellie Pickler and Jennifer Hudson who all had strong selling second albums.) Frankly, Scotty's holiday collection, "Christmas With Scotty McCreery" sold well enough to be #5 in my above list, which bodes very well for his new collection of much better written material. I am guessing it should sell better than the Christmas album, and being the third October release for Scotty in three years it should comfortably sell well throughout the holiday season, if it is promoted as well (or better) than CWSM or CAD. Since UMG Nashville actually knows Scotty has a good track record selling albums they will likely get behind him and promote him well.
