Today hundreds of fast-food workers in Chicago and Detroit walked off the job, following similar actions in New York, St. Louis and Kansas City. Teamsters are striking Gold Cross Ambulance in El Centro., Calif., to protest low wages and dangerous working conditions. The protests, strikes and rallies are fueled by anger by CEO looting. They are all aimed at the same thing: empowering workers to stand together and fight for fair treatment and living wages.<br /><br />McKesson faces not just the Teamsters protest. Two institutional investors believe the notion is overdue for McKesson MCK +0.35%, since the wholesaler has paid more than $1 billion in recent years to resolve regulatory and other legal disputes without publicly disclosing any clawback steps. Meanwhile, McKesson ceo John Hammergren received $131 million in compensation last year. </blockquote><blockquote>And so, the LongView Funds run by Amalgamated Bank and the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust are pushing a proposal to be voted on at the McKesson annual shareholder meeting tomorrow. As they see it, the move will “increase transparency, encourage executive pay-for-performance and discourage senior executives from engaging in behavior that could cause significant financial harm to the company.” </blockquote><blockquote>What do they want? Lake Norman is a <i>huge</i> lake and the alligator population seems to be moving into new territories. The cove where this gater was seen at 8:00 this morning was in Cornelius which is located north of Charlotte and south of Statesville.<br /><br />According to the <i><a href="http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/07/31/4203442/alligator-spotted-in-lake-norman.html">Charlotte Observer</a>:</i><br /><blockquote>The alligator was observed by residents shortly before 8 a.m. near the Peninsula Yacht Club, off Jetton Road. Police arrived a short time later and confirmed that a gator, about 2 to 3 feet long, was swimming in the surf.<br /><br />One officers said the gator was about 30 yards offshore.<br /><br />Cornelius police called for help from the N.C. Speaking is pretty easy for me because preparing for a keynote feels a lot like preparing for class with one exception. Teenagers are a much tougher audience than you beautiful, wonderful educators out there.</p> <p>If you have too long of a gap or you're caught unprepared you might end up with a mess on your hands. </p> <h3>Do I upgrade and make it hard or keep it the same and go easy?</h3> <p>This year, I was faced with a decision. Do I stick with Windows 7 and the last version of office or upgrade to Office 2013? I had no choice. I have decided to keep my students on the leading bleeding edge of technology where it hurts. Often, it hurts me more than anything as I have to update my plans and create new tutorials. Everything ends up being new. It hurts, but it fits with my decision.</p> <p>My decision is to have, as far as I know it, one of the leading technology education programs in the world for high schoolers. We don't have the money to have such a program but really, as long as my computers are 4 years old or less, the only thing it costs me is myself. </p> <h3>Decisions. Decisions.</h3> <p>I have decided to teach. I decide to teach every single day.I teach with decisions. I teach with my life. I teach with my own willingness to put myself out there and learn new things even when I feel clueless.</p> <p>If teaching is a decision and a lifestyle, learning is too. Those precious children decide if they are going to learn from you. If you decide to teach, they have to decide to learn from you. </p> <p>But inherent in my decision to teach is my decision and commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get their attention. Sing, dance, swing from the rafters, turn off the lights and use lasers to teach about fiber optics. Whatever it takes. This, as you know, those of you rebels among our profession who are insanely committed to our craft - this takes everything we have. </p> <p>Teacherpreneurs like us are all out committed. We are committed with heart, soul, and mind and will not stop until the last bell rings on the last day of school.<br></p> <p>Deciding to teach doesn't mean we're perfect. It means that when we mess up and fall down that we get up and start over. It means that we don't quit. It means that the only failure we cannot accept is quitting because failure is a daily part of what happens in our classrooms.</p> <h3>We need admins to protect the teacher's heart</h3> <p>This is why anything that tries to kill the heart of a teacher should be watched for closely by administrators. Such tenacious commitment takes a lot of time, heart and energy. So, when you have others on staff who aren't in the classroom who make it extremely difficult for teachers -- Those who create hurdles.-- Those who are rude. --- Those who just try to be a pain because they can... you have to watch for that because with the amount of effort that it takes to make the decision and carry through with that decision to teach... we teachers don't have a lot of energy for other guff from non-classroom spaces.</p> <h3>Will you decide to teach?</h3> <p>Teaching is a decision. It takes all you have. But as anyone who has given their heart and soul to such a worthy cause will tell you, students give back far more than you could ever give. What makes Canadians sick? Poverty, says a report from the Canadian Medical Association

OTTAWA — Poverty is making Canadians sick, says a report released Tuesday by the Canadian Medical Association.<br /><br><br /><br>The report, based on public consultations at six "town halls" in cities across the country last winter and spring, said factors such as poor housing, lack of access to healthy food and early childhood programs all affect health.<br /><br><br /><br>"We heard that the biggest barrier to good health is poverty," says CMA president Dr. Anna Reid, a Yellowknife emergency room physician who says federal, provincial and territorial governments must give top priority to developing an action plan to eliminate poverty.<br /><br><br /><br>"It really hit me in a visceral way when we did those town halls," said Reid.<br /><br><br /><br>Malnourished people become ill. People who can only afford junk food or don't have access to healthy food because there isn't a supermarket nearby can develop diabetes. People who live in mouldy, substandard housing can get asthma medications, but it won't make the asthma go away. Social isolation has mental health consequences, including increased suicide rates.<br /><br><br /><br>"The cost of inaction is higher than acting," said Reid at a press conference Tuesday to launch the report.<br /><br><br /><br>About half of all health-care outcomes are linked to "social determinants" such as income, housing, education, disability, gender and race. In comparison, a quarter of health outcomes can be attributed to the health care system, which includes access to health care and wait times. Only 15 per cent of outcomes are linked to biology and genetics and 10 per cent to the environmental factors such as air quality.<br /><br><br /><br>Canadians want sincere, legitimate and reaction action, said Reid, who is making tackling poverty the focus of her mandate as CMA president.<br /><br><br /><br>"This report does not point fingers," she said. "Canada is a prosperous country and can do better."<br /><br><br /><br>Among the report's 12 recommendations was evaluating a guaranteed annual income approach to alleviating poverty through a major pilot project funded by the federal government.<br /><br><br /><br>Another recommendation was a national food security program to ensure access to safe and nutritious food to all Canadians, no matter where they live or how much they earn.<br /><br><br /><br>The report also drew attention to the issue of child poverty. The Conference Board of Canada gave Canada a rank of "C" when it comes to child poverty and placed it 15th out of 17 peer countries. Only Italy and the U.S. have a lower ranking.<br /><br><br /><br>About one in seven Canadian children live in poverty and the rate has been on the increase since the mid-90s. It's not an issue that can be ignored because poverty hinders the ability to sustain economic growth, the OECD has warned.<br /><br><br /><br>"If we could eliminate child poverty, we could go a long way to improving health," says Reid.<br /><br><br /><br>Fred Phelps, executive director of the Canadian Association of Social Workers, said addressing the social determinants of health will tackle health care costs. It will take measures like a long-term commitment to affordable housing, he said.<br /><br><br /><br>"The roadmap exists," he said. "It's the political will that's lacking.<br /><br><br /><br>Jeff Morrison, president of Ottawa's Centretown Community Health Centre, says the centre offers services that address inequalities, including showers for people who live in inadequate housing, phone and email for those who don't have their own access and a door-to-door bus service for seniors and disabled people who have trouble going to a supermarket.<br /><br><br /><br>Still, with intensification, housing costs have increased and the population base served by the centre is growing. The health centre's biggest challenge is acquiring space to offer services, said Morrison.<br /><br><br /><br>Drawing attention to the role poverty plays in health outcomes is part of the role of the CMA, said Reid. About one in five health-care dollars is spent addressing problems related to poverty, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.<br /><br><br /><br>Doctors can help address poverty by being aware of the effect poverty has on their patients' health, she said. The CMA is developing a tool kit that helps physicians take medical histories that take this into account. They can also get involved in a leadership role.<br /><br><br /><br>"We represent over 78,000 physicians.
